Sony announces the 18-200mm Powerzoom and 20mm f/2.8 or NEX!

Image of the 20mm pancake
Sony just announced the new 20mm f/2.8 pancake for NEX and released the 18-200 Powerzoom lens as standalone. Preorder is already up at BHphoto (Click here for 20mm pancake) and for the powerzoom (Click here).
Editor’s note. I knew about that 20mm lens since over two weeks but didn’t know the exact announcement date. Damn, missed to post the rumor earlier. Sorry
I have been told by my sources that this lens has a much more acceptable image quality than the 16mm pancake.
Here is the press release:
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 22, 2013 – Sony is expanding its popular E-mount camera system with the addition of two new lenses compatible with all α E-Mount Cameras and semi-professional camcorders.
New 20mm F2.8 ‘pancake’ wide angle lens (model SEL20F28)
When mounted on any Sony α E-Mountcamera, the sharp new SEL20F28 ”pancake” lens creates an exceptionally versatile, portable package ideal for a broad range of everyday shooting opportunities ranging from interiors to landscapes, street photography, casual snapshots and more.
The new lens features an ultra-slim design approximately 20mm from lens front to back, and with its wide angle of view (30mm on 35mm equivalent) and bright F2.8 aperture, it produces excellent contrast, resolution and clarity across the frame for both still image and full HD video shooting.
New 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Powered Telephoto Zoom Lens (model SELP18200)
Originally offered only as a kit lens for the new NEX-VG30 camcorder introduced this past fall, the new SELP18200 powered telephoto zoom lens will now be available for purchase as a stand-alone lens.
Designed for serious videographers, the high-quality lens offers a generous 11x magnification range and whisper-quiet power zoom mechanics, focusing and aperture operation. This allows for smooth cinematic transitions when adjusting zoom level or manual settings during shooting. It features a comfortably positioned zoom lever that works with a switch on the lens barrel, allowing zoom speed to be selected in three different steps – from slow, beautiful shifts in perspective to dramatic crash-zoom effects. Zoom can also be controlled directly from compatible NEX-VG900, NEX-VG30 and NEX-FS700 (requires firmware update) video cameras.
The new lens also has built-in Optical SteadyShot™, which cuts the effects of camera shake and minimizes camera blur while shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds. Additionally, Active Mode further enhances stabilization at the wide end of the 11x zoom range ensuring smooth, stable footage even if the shooter is in motion.
While the new SELP18200 lens is optimized for video, it’s also a flexible choice for shooting still photography – from expansive landscapes to high impact close-ups of wildlife or athletes – with Sony’s α E-Mountrange of interchangeable lens still cameras.
Sony α E-mount lens family expansion
These new models expand the Sony E-mount family to 13 native E-mount lenses plus two converters, covering virtually any shooting situation for photographers and videographers alike.
Spanning ultra-wide angle, powerful telezoom, macro and fast, bright primes, the range includes premium optics by Sony and Carl Zeiss, and offers refined performance and easy handling throughout the line.
Pricing and Availability
The new E 20mm F2.8 (SEL20F28) wide-angle prime lens will be available this April for about $350.
The new E PZ18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS (SELP18200) motorized telezoom lens will be available this March for about $1200.
The Sony α family of cameras, camcorders, lenses and accessories can be purchased at Sony retail stores, online at www.store.sony.comand at all other authorized retailers throughout the Sony dealer network.

4 months ago |And Sigma 19/2.8 was 200$. Now it’s even 100$ which is almost the steal of the century if you like the focal length.
Juan
4 months ago |Yes, Sigma 19mm is very good, not as small as the new Sony 20mmm but still lightweight and enough compact.
Don’t understand the Sony strategy, I think it’s fixed focal lenses are very expensive for what they offer. Definitely overpriced.
Carlos Aversa
4 months ago |I fully agree. I can’t see the point in making a 20/2.8 where we already have a very good 19/2.8. If it had OSS would make sense. What are the new features for this lens? Pancake size? Superb optical quality?

4 months ago |for sure it allows to mount existing sony’s utrawide and fisheye converters, what others does not
Vlad
4 months ago |It is possible to mount Panasonic DMW-GFC1 fisheye converter at Sigma 19 f 2.8.
The result is quite awesome on Nex-7. The sharpness is great, definately better than 16mm + converter from Sony.
It is possible to mount wide angle converter too, if you do not want to have fisheye effect (DMW-GWC1).
It is really a good idea to have at least one of those converters with excellent Sigma 19mm lens.

4 months ago |Not sure about the Canon being excellent, but the Pany 20/1.7 is and it’s brighter for the same price as this Sony. Cone on Sony, I expected better.
Vlad
4 months ago |The Panasonic also isn’t a good comparison. How about comparing it to the overpriced Zuiko 17mm f1.8? Or maybe we should try the 12mm?
Miroslav
4 months ago |Panasonic 14mm F2.5 should be its match…
Vlad
4 months ago |My point is: there is no match. You are comparing two different systems from different vendors. You might find one lens cheaper in one of the system, there will be another which will be expensive. My second point is – m43 isn’t cheap at all. It is actually quite an expensive system.
pjpo
4 months ago |overpriced 17mm f/1.8? What about the $1100 24mm f/1.8? $500 sounds really good to me.
ronnbot
4 months ago |@Vlad: I wasn’t trying to imply m4/3 is cheap overall. Sure, they’re lenses with different FoV for different systems but they’re still lenses. More specifically, they (20/2.8, 20/1.7, 22/2 lenses) are all pancakes for mirrorless systems. So when Sony announces a 20/2.8 for $350, it does beg the question: Why isn’t it cheaper or brighter considering what other companies currently have in the market?
I’m not dejected with the existence of this lens, just scratching my head a little.

I know few Sony lovers have switched to Nikon lately due to long wait for what they need/wants and Sony’s competitive edge of price (of lenses and dSLRs)compare to Nikon and Canon which is no longer available, unfortunately.
Sony, wake up and make it right!!

Yes wish to see more A mount full frame lenses coming soon too.
I hope Sony updates many of its existing screw driven lenses with SSM and put weather sealing into the new G and Zeiss lenses.
As for the Zeiss lenses, the 85mm f1.4 and 135mm 1.8 needs update with SSM for sure( optical improvement will be nice too, but not saying theta they are bad optically of course) the 24-70mm f2.8 and 16-35mm f2.8 needs update with wealth sealing, though this may not be a big concern, and can wait but I see this update is necessary to couple with weather sealed A99.
Also I wish Sony can bring back some classic Minolta Classic lenses, like the 70-210mm beercan, 28-135mm f4-4.5, 200mm f2.8 etc and oh yea, updates in the current macro lenses would be good too.

Waiting mainly Sony 70-200/2.8 G II SSM. Mainly because of new AF-system/motor and weather sealing.
Earlier I had Minolta 70-200G SSM, Sony 70-400G SSM and Minolta 400/4.5 APO screw drive. Sold them all and bought new Sony 300/2.8 G II SSM. Difference in AF-speed is really remarkable to all of them. With A99 and 300G I have good combination for nature, mainly for bird photography. I assume that A99 + 70-200G II is good combination at least for sport and nature photography.

4 months ago |I loved the 16mm with the ultra wide converter. Sure, I read about the gripes about image quality, but at such a wide angle, I didn’t really care since I was only doing travel photography.
My only complaint(unless this costs $500 or something), is that there’s no OSS. It sucks to have to swap lenses when I want to shoot a short video clip.

Vlad
4 months ago |There is a cheaper solution which also can give you the better result in sharpness: e-mount Sigma 19/2.8 + Panasonic ultra-wide converter DMW-GWC1 or fisheye converter DMW-GFC1 for wider angle and fisheye effect.
The shots with this combo on Nex-7 are quite amazing.

4 months ago |Looking directly at my SEL16F28, this SEL20F28 looks like a refresh with a flatter front element. It even looks like the FCL-ECU1/ECF1 adapters will fit.
Given that the primary issue that people had with the SEL16F28 was the extreme corners (center resolution was actually not just good, but great), perhaps they re-used much of the same optical formula without over-reaching on FoV.
It also needs to be remembered that the SEL16F28 was $250 at the outset, and fell rapidly to being a freebie(!) as it currently.
I honestly think that Sony is not trying to sell many of the SEL20F28 as stand-alones, but merely establishing its “value” for inclusion into camera + lens bundles. Do remember that was how many NEX-5/5N and NEX-3/C3 were sold, with the SEL16F28.
GreenLens
4 months ago |I think, it’s too expensive for a kit. SEL16 is a jewel, for the purpose, and should not be discontinued. I’d expect a 28 pancake and a not-so-big 14/16 replacement lens.
agorabasta
4 months ago |The UWA and fisheye adapters from SEL16 must fit physically. Given the rather high glass quality in those adapters, there’s a good chance to have a very nice 15mm with that UWA.

Bill
4 months ago |The Minolta Maxxum 20mm f/2.8 sells for $310 to $364 on KEH in used excellent condition. Granted this is a full frame lens, but it is the same aperture and not a pancake. Since the standard zooms cover the 20mm focal length and at apertures not much if at all slower than the new pancake, I would expect this would sell in very small numbers. Persons who want the smallest camera package and those that want the bit higher quality that a prime lens may offer are going to buy this lens. Hopefully the image quality will be enough better than the kit zooms to justify the slight increase in costs.

4 months ago |I wouldn’t complain about the price until I see some sample shots. I know the 16mm didn’t really make a name for itself, but this is a new lens and judging by the recent E-mounts, I would expect some good quality shots from this lens.
Fuji’s 14mm f/2.8 is supposedly near perfect, but it costs $900. Their 18mm f/2 goes for $600 and is pretty impressive also.
Toby
4 months ago |I’ve always thought Sony’s 16mm pancake is quite a nice little kit lens. I’ve had some good results with it. This new 20mm would have to be significantly better for a decent price to make me want it. I suspect its probably neither of those things.
Neo NiGHTS ®
4 months ago |I don’t mind this lens being a “slow” F2.8 since it’s pretty standard for pancake lenses. Even Samsung has a 20mm F2.8. The only faster lenses are the Samsung 30mm F2 and 16mm F2.4.
And I won’t take the m4/3 pancakes into account because they have smaller sensors, so it’s easier to make smaller and faster lenses.
Also the lens look really cute.
What bugs me is the price and lack of OIS. Were it stabilised than the price would be fair. Otherwise it’s just expensive.
I see prices falling down soon.
tharwan
4 months ago |meh. f/2.8
One stop faster would be nice.
I think this is just the replacement for the 16mm in the same design as the 35mm. Looks nice though.
Would be nice if Sony would show another wide-angle lens with a faster aperture at CP+ but from their point of view the Zeiss 24 mm probably already covers everything whats left in between. I am still kind of sad that there is no consumer grade lens for shooting indoors with low light.
Maybe Sigma will update their primes too, since they are selling them at these low prices now?

4 months ago |What is up with Sony lens prices? $350 for an f/2.8 pancake lens? Really?
Xaifodin
4 months ago |^ Exactly this. It is just getting ridiculous. I like sony for what they are doing, but their lens pricing is just too steep. I was looking forward for the 35mm 1.8, until i was put off by the high price. Even though it has OSS, IMO the price can’t be justified. Its a fixed lens, made for aps-c after all. Just make the damn stabilization in the camera, and give us lower prices on the lenses.

4 months ago |Its seems to me that Sony are making lenses for the NEX cameraes that cant fit on a Alpha 77. So is it the NEX cameras that is the feature, or is Sony just happy with the small amount of lenses that fits on a Alpha theese days. I wish that Sony could come up with a 24-70 f.4,0 and a 100 – 300 f.4,0 that does make it good on test to a reasoneble prize. And both with IF so the lenses does not expand when zooming or adjust focus

Frank
4 months ago |Sony should have a lot in their lens line-up, but you’re never going to see it in A-mount. I’m pretty convinced that A-mount is dying in favour of E-mount. The next FF is rumoured to be E-mount with an adapter for A-mount lenses, that’s a warning sign to me.
If you want such lenses, swap to CaNikon, otherwise you are looking at Sigma and Tamron on A-mount.

4 months ago |The m43 Panasonic 14/2.5 pancake is $400 and the Olympus 17/2.8 pancake is $300, so $350 is not too unreasonable.
Besides, I think this pancake will be offered as a kit for future NEX bodies at $200 a piece. The SEL16 which retailed for $250 only costs $100 in a kit.
Vivek
4 months ago |Where do you get those prices from?! Even when it debuted, it was never $400 (the 14/2.5). It has sold new for as low as $150. It is a fantastic lens.
I think the $100 Sigma DN 19/2.8 is a far better lens than this. I am not going to be fooled by the cute looks and sizes anymore. The 16-50 zoom that came with my NEX-6 lasted exactly 1 day. I sold it immediately for the price it should list for (ie., very very cheap).

4 months ago |Current retail price here in the EU is 239 Euros (could be found cheaper if you look around) and that translates to < $320. Only people who get corporate discounts (they have several schemes) buy directly from Panasonic!
I have tried that 14/2.5 on my NEX'. Very sharp except the far corners.
The 20/1.7 is even better.
I also have all the Sony made primes (except the 35/1.8). None compare favorably in terms of IQ with those of Panasonic. There is no contest at all.
It would be nice if Panasonic would make the lenses for NEX (and Sony can return the favor by making the batteries for Panasonic).
Vlad
4 months ago |There are 4 Sony primes in the NEX system (Zeiss 24mm excluded), one of which you don’t have (one of the good ones). It’s not like you have much to compare. I am interested to hear how bad the 50mm 1.8 is though.
Also BlackLegSanji did the price comparison correctly. You are comparing a street price of a long ago released lens vs an announced one.
And don’t get me started on the pricing of some of the m43 primes (12mm for example).
Simon
4 months ago |I will not be buying another Sigma lens for NEX.
I have the 19mm and the 30mm with the NEX7. Both have issues, although the 19mm no longer usable.
On both, the focus stops working / lens disconnects… and you have to remove and reattach the lens to get it working (with deterioration over time).
A friend also has the 30mm and is seeing the same problem. Shame, as they are good lenses if they worked (apart from being cheap plastic with an odd rattle)

4 months ago |Which is the release date of Zeiss 50mm 1.4 SSM A-mount?
Otherwise I’ll buy Sigma or Sony
Frank
4 months ago |I’d wait for the Zeiss if you can.
The Sigma and Sony aren’t sharp wide open, expect to be at f2 to get them sharp, with the Sigma being very slightly sharper at wider apertures.
The Sigma has nicer bokeh than the Sony, oddly it is also slightly wider more like a 47mm and has HSM so pretty quiet. But the Sony is tiny and light in comparison.
Of course the Zeiss might not be any better and will certainly be more expensive by a wide margin.

4 months ago |I think the prices for these lenses (and the recent E-mount 35F18) is a bad sign for Sony users (like me). Panasonic/Leica have a smaller sensor size, so can make smaller lenses that are more affordable. CaNikon have efficiencies of scale and have amortized the R&D costs over the decades. For example, the recent and highly regarded Canon 40mm 2.8 pancake sells for $150. Unfortunately, Sony can not match these prices, and is losing so much money across the company it can not subsidize prices to build market share. As a Sony E-mount user, does it make sense to purchase these APS format lenses at these inflated prices if they will be obsoleted by a future full frame? I am tempted to get a metabones adapter and Canon full frame lenses – the glass is good value and since they are designed for full frame, they should work with any future full frame NEX (perhaps with a new adapter) or Canon. So the only benefit with Sony versus Sigma/Canon lenses is the compact size. Yet if size really matters the m4/3 are compelling. It is a shame, the 50f18 is a nice lens and a reasonable value, but perhaps the last Sony glass I will buy.

4 months ago |I meant Panasonic/Olympus! I must have been thinking of the Panasonic/Leica 25mm which seems a decent value when the IQ and aperture are considered.

4 months ago |Well i will snap the 20 up if its better IQ than the kit.
The sig 19 is that much better than the kit.
I carry the 24/1.8 and 50/1.8 about.
A 2/2.8 and 50/1.8 combo would be very compact and hopefully still decent quality…

4 months ago |Would you consider the 20 just for the form factor? The Sigma 19 is likely to be pretty similar in quality I would think? (Perhaps better since it doesn’t have to be constrained to pancake form)

4 months ago |Am I correct in guessing that the old UWA adapter will work with the new pancake? It looks like it has a similar type mount? That would be great – I absolutely hate my 19mm, as it is ridiculously soft around the edges…

4 months ago |This is great news.
Now small dilemma. With my Nex-5R i’ve got :
SEL-16F28 + VCL-ECU1 (12mm with the adapter)
SEL-18-55 (which i never use) but keep in case i wanna sell my Nex and buy a newer model (better resell value)
SEL-35F18 (great but misses PDAF firmware)
SEL-50F18 (also great but misses also PDAF firmware)
SEL-55210 (used once in a while but should be there)
I feel that i need to sell one of my lens. Was thinking about the SEL-16F28 + VCL-ECU1 (very average sharpness), and buy the SEL-20F28
Any hope Sony will release an SEL-12F4 of an SEL-10F4 ? (Zeiss 2.8/12 will be too expensive and bulky…)
Which lens would you have ditched ?
