A77 and NEX-7 news roundup (Sony’s big risk?)
The Online Photographer (Click here) wrote an article about Sony’s big risk from a marketing persepctive: “Where that kind of word-of-mouth from actual consumers doesn’t help so much is when you have a good product that doesn’t appeal from a sales standpoint, such that nobody buys it. Ask all the moviemakers who create superior films but don’t have the marketing muscle to get them noticed. That’s more likely to be what might happen to the A77.”
Sony A77 Hands On First Impressions at Alphamountworld (Click here): “I had my wife take a look through the viewfinder, she was unaware that the new cameras didn’t have optical viewfinders. She’s owned her own KM7D for a few months now that has a very decent optical finder -so she’s no stranger to using an optical finder. For the first minute or so, she just commented on how large the view was in the A77 and how much information was displayed. Then it hit her, and she asked me how the viewfinder auto dimmed and brightened on its own and how all that information was on the screen. It was then that I revealed to her that it was an electronic viewfinder, not an optical one.”Wow” she exclaimed. “.
Sony Alpha A77 vs A65 SLT Hands On Preview at ePhotozine (Click here): “The Sony Alpha A77 and A65 are capable of producing some excellent photos, with great colour, detail and extremely solid exposure performance. Reds are extremely vibrant and colourful and the cameras both produce excellent JPEG output straight from the camera on default settings. Noise control is very good with low noise right up to high ISO settings. The cameras also offer continuous focus when using the video mode.“.

9 months ago |Wow, they are two great reviews. I’m feeling excited about the a77 again now! I was getting a bit worn down with the high ISO criticisms, the buffer depth criticism and the battery life criticism.
But the ePhotozine people said they took 1000 shots and didn’t exhaust the battery
And gizmodo said they got 850 shots and 30 minutes of video…
I have no idea how Sony tested the battery for the official specs, but it seems that real world use is much better!
Still quite a bit of noise reduction visible in the ephotozine shots, but the detail still looks good. 12800 looks like emergency mode only, and the whole image looks flat and desaturated. But I would bet that raw processing and adding a bit of contrast back into the image would help a lot.
zstan
9 months ago |Sony ALWAYS play down the battery life. I think other camera manufacturers do the same thing to prevent getting sued if people can’t actually take the much shots compared to the advertised information.
Jennzhen
9 months ago |Nope. They follow CIPA standard for battery test, e.g. use flash for every other shot. So if your flash usage is less often, you can get more shots.
SonyA77
9 months ago |That explains a lot. Useful to know.
zstan
9 months ago |And yes, they follow the standards VERY strictly. Most of the time you could get more shots of out of the battery.

19 points AF sensor with 11 cross sensors [X]
Micro AF tuning [X]
ISO 100-16000, with expandable ISO 50 option [X]
1920 x 1080 60p/24p AVCHD 2.0 [X]
P/A/S/M manual controls while recording video [X]
1200 zone metering [X]
Completely new developed Bionz processor [X]
12 fps [X]
1/8000 shutter speed [X]
TrueBlack 921k 3-way tilt LCD [X]
3 million dot OLED viewfinder [X]
Smart teleconverter function with 1.4x and 2.0x option [X]

I think there is older SAR5 called A77 priced similar to 60D. So this is the SAR not correct. overall score:
21/22 = 95.5%
Incredible Excellent SAR!
thanks Andrea for your hardwork. SAR is kind like putting entire planet infomation about Sony imaging at here for ease users to read! Salute!

9 months ago |I took this the other day on my a850. Apparently it has “terrible, unusable high ISO” according to internet experts.
This is ISO4000, f2.8 and 1/30s under heavy tungsten lighting. Shot RAW. No noise reduction. Standard LR sharpen of +15
http://imgur.com/a/kvU0L
Looks pretty damn useable to me. And consider the size of the whole 24mp image.. it’s ENORMOUS! See the size of the eye crop in the context of the whole image. You could half the size and still have a huge 12mp image where the noise will be almost invisible. Tons of detail – eyelashes, skin texture etc.
It goes to show that camera shake, your object moving or bad focus are much more important than ISO noise.
The a77 will be at least this good – 3 years of technological advancement.

9 months ago |The EVF looks to be very good.
And I am not afraid of the SLT mirror.
Sony also advertise both these (EVF and SLT mirror) when advertising
for A77.
The A55 had very good high ISO performance, the A580 a bit better but
not so very much. It is more the 24MP sensor itself I am wonder now
how does perform.
I have no need for 24MP so even a A77 with the 16MP A580/NEX5N sensor would
be excellent for me. Now we have a new sensor, I all want to see how it does perform. If dynamic range is less than the 16MP sensor I know for sure what I am gone buy.
But if you only shoot low ISO and you need 24MP for high resolution the A77 looks to be a safe buy already.

9 months ago |I am getting sick of hearing about the ‘Canon’ pellicle mirror. This is not 1966, the situation is different now. Sony takes the light and directs it where it needs to go and electronically manipulates it to achieve great results. Again, this is not 1966 people! Things can be done now that weren’t possible 40 or even 20 years ago.Do you seriously think that a giant manufacturer of imaging sensors cannot determine what a successful imaging sensor is? Do you not think that Sony knows a little something about megapixels and sensor construction? 24mp is better nowadays than 16mp, as far as image quality goes, unless that is, you don’t care about a little thing called image detail. The 24mp will have more detail, this is most important. 16mp is good, but 24mp is better. Sony would not build a 24mp sensor just for the heck of it, they know it can work. And for what it’s worth,12mp jpegs, and 6mp jpegs are selectable in the a77 menu. Maybe a cRaw will be available in the future.

SonyA77
9 months ago |The way to deal with the Canon lot is to reply that Canon FAILED with the pellicle mirror due to image quality deterioration. Sony keep the IQ only losing a bit of light.
Carl
9 months ago |That was only the case with the ones from the 60s, though, due to material science limitations of the day.
The 90s models (RT and RS) were actually slightly sharper than their reflex mirrored brothers.
SonyA77
9 months ago |No they weren’t.
Carl
9 months ago |You sound rather certain.
Pellicle mirrored cameras have no mirror slap, so are as sharp as a camera using MLU all the time.
Fuzzphoto
9 months ago |Yes, they were, because they had no mirror slap. The reason pellicle mirror cameras weren’t successful is because they didn’t offer autofocus, gave a full stop of light loss on film, and the viewfinder was dim. The only advantage at that time was speed.
Henk
9 months ago |+1
Chances are that a 16Mp sensor might give better or the same level of detail at, say, ISO6400 than a 24Mp but definitely not in lower ISO’s.
Carl
9 months ago |I think technical comparisons with Canon’s pellicle mirror cameras are totally fair game.
For example, the A77 has 8x the shutter lag of the EOS-1n RS.
SonyA77
9 months ago |If they were so good, why aren’t Canon continuing to use them? Because they failed.
Carl
9 months ago |Commercially. Technically is another matter.
monkeyfacemcbride
9 months ago |Canons Pellicle mirror arrangement was slightly different it used a fragile but solid half-silvered (vapor deposited mylar) mirror to split light between the viewfinder and film plane. It suffered from a dim viewfinder which meant compromised viewing in all but the best light. It was simply a great solution limited by the constraints of technology and physics. The Sony implementation uses a thin flexible film which is much cheap and easy to replace. Today we can work round these light limitations using EVFs, they may not be to everyones taste, but they do work. I have an A55 and while the viewfinder in my A900 has a better image quality, it doesn’t have:
A live histogram
A level indicator
Rule of thirds and diagonal composition line overlays
Menu displays and navigation
Boosting in low light
focus magnification
WYSIWYG image – or close too i.e. live WB, tone curves etc etc etc
…and a bunch of other useful stuff.
So, do I find the A55 EVF limiting, only in the sense that it doesn’t tilt upwards. If it did that it would be great (and OVFs dont tilt either). In every other respect no. Aesthetically I like the large OVF view, but functionally I think the EVF is a more useful tool when taking a shot.
The A77 EVF is supposed to be streets ahead of the A55 so I’m quite looking forward to that one.

9 months ago |I said it once, and Ill said it again…TRUE PHOTOGRAPHERS WANT A OPTICAL VIEWFINDER…LED VIEWFINDER has less detail and takes up more battery. The a55 and a33 sold only because it was something knew and it got the attention to a new market.I want to rely on my EYE and not in a LED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…Photography doesn’t feel the same with out an OVF!!!!
An EVF is o.k in a camcorder, but not in a DSLR!!!!! Here in the tv studio we are o.k with looking at a EVF in a Camcorder, but thats why we like DSLRS its because of his OVF.!!!!!!!
SonyA77
9 months ago |Since you have never used the A77 for any length of time, how would you know?
I guess wanting the EVF means that I am not a “true” photographer? The EVF is just a tool, not the end result, a real photographer would know that.
The sensor does not record what your eye sees, the PC monitor does not show what your eye sees, the printer does not print what your eye sees. Your point is wrong on so many levels…

9 months ago |Then what’s a true photographer? It should be about the picture, not the camera.
Optical viewfinder shows the “reality”,
EVF shows the world as the camera captures it and sort of a preview of the final result.
When EVF reaches high enough resolution (think iPhone 4 and above) then there is more details then the human eye can see. Sounds like the future in my ears…
Almazar80
9 months ago |True photographers are after results. If the EVF gets them the results they want, then I say go for it. I find the EVF on the A55 to be quite useful (but then I like the OVF on my other Alpha SLR). It appears that the A77 EVF is much improved over the A55′s. That would be even more welcome.
What about the people who used twin reflex cameras that had to look down on the focusing screen. No OVFs then. Or the view camera guys who did not have these OVFs that you rave about. As far as I know, Ansel Adams managed quite well without the OVF that you tru photographers crave. I think he qualifies as one.
Matt
9 months ago |Such an ignorant comment.
1. Don’t assume you know what all photographers want. If you want an OVF, then fine, don’t buy the A77. But don’t speak for everyone else
2. The A77 OVF is world better than the A33/55 according to everyone who has held the thing (which you haven’t). Many preview, including one on this thread, state that many people initially have a bit of trouble noticing it is an EVF. The thing has 2.4 million dots…you’re not going to be missing detail.

True photographers want a Hasselblad, not some cheap $5,000 Canon. True photographers own a studio and have $1,000,000 invested in equipment. A true photographer has three studio assistants. 9 months ago |@ Carlos. True photographers peddle lies.
I read a recent article in a national newspaper written by a renouned photographer who captures the world and people as they really are, warts and all.
His belief is that photographers dont capture reality, but are peddling lies as they capture a landscape to show it at it’s most beautiful, portraits are airbrushed to show people at their best and to flatter, product photographers do the same to sell goods.
Photographs are generally a lie. Why do we insist on seeing the world through an OVF as it really is when we’re capturing the world and processing it to show it as it isn’t?
A true photographer will utilise an EVF as it helps them to capture the world as the camera sees it. It’s a great tool in the right hands.

9 months ago |i say let the haters hate. haters won’t end up buying limited stock, or better yet, sell their “flawed” dslr at a better price. this evf vs ovf debate sounds like the digital sensor vs film debate of yore.
if sony has addressed yhe shortcomings of the evf, flash delay, and ghosting issues, while providing better resolution and noise control in a prod level firmware update, then it will be an amazing camera. only remaining concern is the uhs-i support and whether it can go above 25MB/sec.

9 months ago |Tests on buffer emptying already show a significant improvement from 30MB/s to 45MB/s memory. Which puts it on a par with Canon 7D on CF or Nikon D7000 on SDHC. neither of them can go beyond 45MB/s so let’s see a test of Sandisk 45MB/s card vs. Delkin 95/80MB/s on A77 to see if it can do better than everyone else. If not some unrealistic types on hear will complain and say 45MB/s on a Canon CF is better than 45MB/s on Sony SD.

9 months ago |My friends shooting full frame Canon and Nikon were not impressed with the a33 or a55, nor was I as an a850 owner, and most of the reviewers rated the a580 as a better camera and delivered better IQ.
The EVF may well be the future, but it has yet to prove itself, and till the a77 ships with production firmware saying that its great or its just good is likey for the most of you is pure speculation or fanboy talk.
I look forward to the day when one of my contract Canon 5 friends or some other pro that carries a Nikon D3 and uses it every day tells me that he is impressed with the utility of using an EVF over the OVF
A working pro will use the Camera that works best and deliverers the product and for now it’s a OVF and maybe, when the a77 ships maybe it will then be the EVF.
David
9 months ago |Depends on the level you’re comparing to though
a850 is one of the best viewfinders around and a 5d2 or D3 are also good. Competing with a top quality OVF is hard.
Whereas the a77 is competing with a77 camera with decent viewfinders like the 7D and D300s. From reports I’ve read so far, it seems about on par with them.
And it will comfortably beat entry level cameras from all 3 manufacturers. The a580 viewfinder is terrible.. I hate using mine!
That said, initial reports about the EVF sound really good – no lag, no colour tearing, and a big size and clarity.

Joel
9 months ago |The camera can most certainly sell itself based upon specifications and price alone. From a spec standpoint, this utterly wipes the floor when it comes to competition from Canon and Nikon. They simply don’t have anything to compete with it and probably wont for quite some time.
That said, the biggest factor holding people back from picking up the A77 or any other expensive Sony body, is the question of Sony’s commitment to their photographic business. Sony have quite the history of dropping business units and products that don’t sell, so one must ask themselves if the Sony photographic unit will still be around, adding new lenses, flashes and bodies to their line-up within 5 years time if sales things aren’t going too well?
I’ll probably give Sony another 5 or 6 years before I’m confident enough to start investing into their system.

9 months ago |Given that new ideas take several years to develop into a product, I think suggesting them early isn’t necessarily a bad idea. If we’re lucky, and Sony is listening, we might be able to affect the next generation of products.
A few things that I would like to see:
- A third control wheel for ISO (maybe make it customisable for exposure comp, etc)
- Removable anti aliasing filters
- Ambient/flash balance control (perhaps controlled by the above third wheel)
- A second tripod socket on camera for vertical operation
- A return of the horizontal power switch rather than the around the shutter button kind
- Weight (but not size) reduction
- Aperture, shutter speed and ISO control in 1/4 stops
- Ability to customise all buttons on camera to one’s own tastes
- Smartphone tethering over WiFi
- Lockable depth of field preview
- In viewfinder metering overlay showing how far above and bellow predicted exposure different parts of the image are, updated in realtime (AKA zone system display)
- Possibly add the auto-zoom protocol from the Xi and Si series Minoltas, and the faux-STF mode from the 7 back in?

I really like some of your ideas.
I use the RRS “L” bracket on my a850’s and love it, so your idea about a side tripod mount sounds great.
But if we are to dream, dream big so I propose that a slot be designed into the body to allow quick attachment. I really love my Really Right Stuff (RRS)ball heads and attachments and the idea of building a quick disconnect into the camera would be genius

9 months ago |Very likely the A77 and the Nex7 will be the most successful APS/c Sony cameras ever.
What ever Nikon or Canon will do of it, I think it will not matter for Sony.

Replace the menu system with the Android O/S
Just think about the features and technology that then could be added into the camera platform and what then could be done like optical correction, image processing.
You name it!
With both hardware and software the sky’s the limit to real photographic improvements and not just a cellphone on steroids.
It will happen someday soon, so why not Sony
Or do we wait till the rumors about Apple buying Sony to come true to see this happen?
Just think! Google powered cameras

9 months ago |I’ve thought about something similar, too, but I’m not sure something with as high an overhead as Android’s Dalvik VM would be the best choice for a camera given the large data sets modern cameras work with.
SDKs in a more general sense really need to happen at some point, though, given that cameras are progressively becoming more like a powerful computer rather than an electromechanical device. Hacking firmware has too many downsides to make it widely appealing.

A good user interface is centered around the device it is used on. One of the more incongruent dogmas going around is that a single interface can be modified to work on various devices. Why? People got along pretty well with pushbutton phones, handlebars and pedals, steering wheels and pedals, etc. Too many people assume a unified interface is best. I am not saying don’t improve the user experience, but a single interface? And Android to boot? Count me out on that one.

Please do not raise improvement list with OVF. Sony have committed future SLT w/o OVF. Life it or Quit it
unless Sony one day pick it back itself, then is different story.

9 months ago |Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, but I gotta know…
Is it possible to switch from NSTC 60fps video to PAL 50fps on all models of the A77, or is this feature locked depending if you buy the camera in US/EU??
According to this review, you can change the setting…

“If you switch to PAL mode, the options are the same, except that the 60 fps rates are replaced by 50 fps equivalents, and the 24 fps rates by 25 fps ones.”
