Chris: “Hi Andrea, I just found this interesting paragraph on DXOMark which indicates that the Sony A99 has been tested and has dynamic range better than the D600 and as high as D800, please read this: DxOmark. They state ” Excellence continues in the Landscape Score too, with the K-5 IIs achieving a stunning 14.1Evs of Dynamic Range that places it 4th out of all cameras and is only outdone by the Nikon D800, D800E and Sony A99.”
As a reminder keep in mind that no A1X and no A95 is coming any time soon. That I know for sure now! Feel save to buy the A99 if that is a camera capable of fulfilling your real needs!

6 months ago |Well, I was being ironic. The A99 is probably the best full frame camera out there, at least for my use – landscape.

6 months ago |Nobody said the mirror reduces dynamic range. It increases noise (ceteris paribus), and that is a fact.

6 months ago |Nikon D600 has a dynamic score of 14.2, so that statement about it being outdone by K5II(14.1) is not correct.

6 months ago |Anybody read PopPhoto mag’s comparison between 5DIII/D800/A99? I have not read the entire article, and I have no doubt all three are excellent cameras….they chose 5DIII as camera of the year.

6 months ago |The D600 wasn’t tested when the K-5 IIs was tested and the statement reads that the K-5 IIs was out done by the D800, D800e and the Sony A99. For all intents and purposes, 1/10 of a point falls within the margin of error of the testing methodology used by DXO and essentially means that the k-5 IIs and D600 have the same score. The difference may not be visible to the naked eye. All I can say is that my A99 rocks.

6 months ago |My gallery made in Sony demo zone in Moscow – A99 + Canon 580EXII Light
(there was no adapter for Sony flash mount) and several foto from 5DM3.

Main conclusion – compressed raw sucks, ghosting and contrast light still a huge problem. And there is unswitchible noise reduction in RAW.
Sony RAW converted

Canon camera JPG

There is same grain on low light and look at left side of head – Sony made picture blurry – look at the ear. But left side with backlighted from screen looks much better on Sony.

6 months ago |The Canon image doesn’t look very good either. The skin tones make the guy look more like a tomato than a human being. More spherical aberration than the Sony image, too.
If anything, it proves that no camera manufacturer is able to defy the laws of physics.

6 months ago |While some people think DXOmark is not to be trusted, I’m really anxious to see how a99 will score. How is it that they are stalling it so much? Nikon’s D800 was scored way before it’s release in my home country. What’s with the hold up…

They aren’t lying. It is repeatable. It IS possible to say that DxO is irrelevant.

6 months ago |About the 50-1.4 review. I agree with many of their points but it seems odd they demand an AF/MF switch on the lens. They tested it with the a99 and completely failed to spot the AF/MF button that falls beneath the right thumb or the AF mode switching with the silent controller.
I personally can’t stand lenses that make you flick a switch on the lens itself to get to MF. (like most of Sony’s SAM lenses and sigma’s micromotor fake HSM)

6 months ago |1) Love my A99!! I think so many people are focused on the ‘roadmap’ rumors and justifiably so, but don’t sleep on the A99. It takes amazing pictures and has some great features too.
2) Love my 50-1.4. Great lens (esp considering the price). I had this on my A77 80% of the time. I put it on my A99 and get even better images. One thing I find fun to do is take off my CZ 24-70 and the Vert Grip and use just the body + the 50-1.4 (like shown in the review) and it gives a totally different experience which is cool.
3) I agree with Mno – I don’t need an AF/MF button on the lens. I find my CZ 24-70 too difficult to toggle so i’d prefer to use the camera toggle MF/AF.
4) I want the new CZ 50 that’s coming out. Can’t wait!

6 months ago |I really love my A99, but at the same time I’m totally disappointed about the video performance!
I know above all it’s a camera for stills and they have to protect their pro video line (FS100, FS700…), but so much moire and aliasing in video?! Even worse than my old A77 and a 5n! It depends a litle on the used lens. Marginal better on my CZ 85 and my old Zeiss Zebra 50, but total failure on my so beloved CZ 24-70 – so much moire and aliasing (possibly too sharp for video) – f***!
Didn’t expect that on a Camera that was advertised for the video qualities…
By when is firmware 1.01 announced???
Please Andrea – any infos about an increase of video performance?
Mike
6 months ago |It looks like Sony is actively looking into the video issue:

6 months ago |Good news! Hopefully Sony does not only care about the missing sharpness with steadyshot on compared to steadyshot off. Please Sony look for the moire/aliasing issue too. Poor line skipping, downscaling. Should be fixable in software…
Nikon did with the D600 related to that issue (moire/aliasing) a better job – with your sensor…

6 months ago |Is the video of the 99 that bad? I have only used the 99 for stills which has been pretty darn awesome. It is hard to believe that would be anything but great given the the amount of attention to video capabilities in this camera. When I heard about the camera before being released I have to admit I was a little concerned they were giving more attention to video v stills. I know I will eventually use the 99 for video so I was really not expecting it to be bad. Can this be addressed with firmware? And hopefully Sony ups their game in the firmware offerings.
