Adam from Mythbusters talks about Speed Booster and NEX cameras.
An anonymous SAR reader just sent me that youtube video you see on top of this post. It shows Adam Savage of the incredibly popular Discovery TV show Mythbusters using EF lenses with the Metabones Speed Booster on three of his NEX cameras (inncludes the NEX7 and the SONY FS700).

4 months ago |There is a huge mistake made by many people about “aperture”.
In the video they say they will get the feel of a 85/1 with this adapter and a 85/1.4 on a Nex, and that is totally wrong.
You will get the image a 85/1.4 gives you on a full frame. With a f/1 setting for speed, that’s true, but definitely not a 85/1 image look depth-of-field wise.
Just like putting a 50/1.4 on a 1.5 crop sensor won’t make the photographs look like the ones taken by a full frame 75/1.4, but a 75/2 instead, regarding image looks and depth of field. And a 1.4 lense regarding speed, that’s true.
The aperture that gives you the “quantity of light arriving on sensor per surface units” (and so the speed/iso/aperture combination you need in a specific situation) is NOT the same as the aperture that gives you the depth of field you get on a specific setup, if you change sensor.
A x2 teleconverter does change both apertures, because you keep the same sensor. But here, you try to compare things with different sensors, and that’s why the two apertures aren’t linked any more.

4 months ago |For all his goofyness in Mythbusters, my respect for Adam Savage has just gone up insanely high.

4 months ago |Yes, but for use on photo cameras, the technology was apparently patented by Kodak, who never manufactured the product, nor would allow anyone else to do so.
I’ve argued for Sony to start making them for years, because it would turn their APS-C cameras into full frame cameras, increase lens speed and potentially lens resolution.
Front mounted converters reduce image quality, rear mounted converters may actually improve it.

4 months ago |It gives the same DoF as on FF because you get the same aperture for almost the same focal lenght (x1.08 crop instead of x1.5 crop).
And that’s what defines DoF, not the size of the sensor per se.
Imagine a 100mm f/1 full frame lens.
On an APS-C NEX with speedbooster, this lens will become a 108mm f/1.08
Pretty close isn’t it ?
Austin
4 months ago |The speed booster can’t get faster than 0.9 because of the size of the entrance pupil. So 1.2 lenses will be as fast as a 1 or a 0.95

4 months ago |Last I heard, Nex is at least unable to report faster f.stop thatn f1.0, but not sure how that works in real life.
Tom S
4 months ago |FF FOV is true. There is obviously a loss in Image Quality due to the sensor still being APS-C, so it is no more sensitive to light, but the second feature of making lenses 1 stop faster actually helps a bit on that too.
Tom S
4 months ago |Yes, do it is a bit inconsistent
He is happy to get a good deal on Ebay for a Nex-7, yet he picks up a FS7000 w/lens which is probably at least $8000.

4 months ago |Focal reducers have been around astrophotography for a long time. The f/8 SCTs from Meade and Celetron have sold f/6.3 reducers since the 80s.
The m43 guys will mitigate their sensor-size issues, but they won’t get the near-FF behavior that NEX people get.
Beachrider
4 months ago |And how about your 50mm f/1.2? That is the coolest! Meta does try to control expectations for such fast lenses, though. (anyone have a 50mm f/1.0?)
Beachrider
4 months ago |Because Adam Savage is a somewhat popular TV Show guy that has a rep for matching Science to Wild Expectations.
Beachrider
4 months ago |If you were Sony, you might be afraid that you will never sell an FF lens to the NEX-centric crowd, ever again.

4 months ago |The metabone speed booster is a great addition to sony gear.
However this is not new and well known from the astrophotographers. This is known as “focal reducer”.

4 months ago |I’m happy to see that someone’s finally making a wideangle adapter. If they make it for A-mount lenses, my Sigma 12-24 mm will go from being an 18-36 mm f/4.5-56 to being a 12-24 mm f/3.2-4, and the 24-40 mm f/2.8 will go to f/2!
The 85 mm f/1.4 becomes an f/1! Wow!

4 months ago |he seems to be confusing flange distance with sensor crop. the crop doesn’t happen because of shorter flange distance, but because the sensor is smaller. also, what everybody seem to miss all the time: the speed booster boosts the amount of light only, dof will stay the same. the effect is more comparable to better iso performance than to wider aperture actually. the crop difference is impressive though. just imagine what this could mean to video shooters using micro four third cameras. sensor size were their only drawback.

4 months ago |Yeah, Adam said he is an amateur. But he has a lot of money!
Rooru S.
4 months ago |But it does provide almost the same FF FOV, and even gives you 1-stop on APS-C cameras.

4 months ago |Get a NEX-FS700 or try to render it via Twixtor. I would go for the FS700.

4 months ago |No, nthey are not showing AF speed, but telling you about it – it is slow. And they even told you why – lenses to be used with CDAF system cameras are designed differently from lenses to be used with conventional PDAF system cameras.
Besides, Metabones themselves isn’t hiding this. The state clearly that AF works with their adapter, but that it is so slow with common EF lenses that it is basically of no use.
Regarding image quality – please read the comment from ArnikFFM below.

4 months ago |No clue what the full frame is, huh? It’s nothing more than a focal length reductor, it doesn’t turn camera into full frame not makes lenses suddenly full frame.

4 months ago |In this case, the repeated lie did become the truth. Full Frame EF lenses did stay full frame on the e-mount. Did you miss the news? Game changer for videographers. What other camera has fs-700 features that can accept 35mm full frame lenses? Nothing at all as far as I know. Canon doesn’t even a full frame video camera that matches the fs-700 – they are all super35..

Video could have been better without the younger geek dude talking over the older geek dude…it’s like two wolves fighting over a too small piece of meat. Hello, you;re amking a video, not having a garage styled conversation……amateurs.

But be assured, there are a lot of samples to be seen on the net, already.
Great vid!
