Amazon US cancels your 50mm NEX lens orders. Watch out for your NEX-7 preorders.
Watch out guys! Amazon is deleting your 50mm NEX lens preorders and they could do the same with your NEX-7 preorders!
This is the message from Amazon:
“Due to a lack of availability from our suppliers, we will not be able to obtain the following item(s) from your order: Sony 50mm f/1.8 Telephoto Lens for Sony E Mount Nex Cameras
We’ve canceled the item(s) and apologize for the inconvenience. We must also apologize for the length of time it has taken us to reach this conclusion.”
I suggest you to preorder the lens in other stores like Adorama (Click here) and BHphoto (Click here). I know they will NOT send you messages like that and keep your preorders. The only place where you find the lens right now is Amazon Japan (6-10 days).
What worries me is that you might lose your NEX-7 preorder too! I have been told the body only will be in shipped to USA in February while the kit version will ship in March. If you preordered the camera at Amazon I highly recommend you to make a new order at Adorama (Click here) , Bhphoto (Click here) or Sonystore (Click here) too!

4 months ago |Am I the only one disappointed by the complete lack of A-mount news? Everything has been about the NEX, I’m starting to lose faith
PhotoNut
4 months ago |Exactly! This site is now really NexRumors.com rather than SonyAlphaRumors.com
also Sony is such a useless company that none of its most recent flagship products can be purchased at retail and yet it is busy discontinuing its mainstream products like the A55, the A900 and A850.
When you bring up this lack of planning by Sony all you hear from fanbots is that there was an earth quake in Japan and floods in Thailand. That is true but didn’t those disasters also affect Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and others? So how come those companies released next gen products which are fully present or will be present in the retail channel?
#1 rule is you never discontinue products until you have announced their replacements
#2 rule is that you never single-source your product components and manufacturing facilities
#3 rule is that you already have sufficient products in the pipeline before you release a new product. If you do not have sufficient products in the pipeline then you need to delay product announcement or availability to retail
#4 rule is that you hire people who have a track record of success.

4 months ago |It’s not expertise. It’s just common sense.
Have you ever seen another case like this where *all* the manufacturer’s top shelf new Christmas season products (A77,NEX7,E 50mm,E 24mm,etc..) are not able to reach retail and the ones that are in supply (A55,A850,A900) are discontinued?
Vlad
4 months ago |Even if it is common sense, you are actually oversimplifying. It’s very clear you have never ran a company.
1. It is a good rule for sure, but what if you aren’t selling?
2. Good rule again, not so easy to do. In the case of natural disasters this would mean sources in different geographical regions.
3. Yes, and that is what they did, until the second disaster came in.
4. Very easy to say.
Forget about Canon, Nikon and others, every company has their own problems. Sony got some bad luck. Get over yourself and wait.
Randy
4 months ago |Yes they should have anticipated a huge tsunami and then thailand being completely flooded. Killing most of their camera production BOTH NEW AND OLD in Japan and Thailand. Or did you forget about the 10′s of thousands of people that died in Japan and the HUGE floods in Thailand. How about you get some of that there common since stuff. Have a look again since you seem to have FORGOT http://cinesourcemagazine.com/index.php?/site/comments/more_aftershocks_from_japan_tsunami_knocks_out_sony_factory/

4 months ago |There isn’t much A mount news. I am also looking forward to the A99. Coming back to this system after having left the Maxxum a long while ago, the NEX was the entry point for me.
The progress from the pathetic NEX-5 to the useful NEX-7 is an indication of Sony’s seriousness.
I am fairly hopeful that the A99 will be useful as well.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |Can you elaborate on why you call the NEX-5 pathetic?
Oh, and PhotoNut, how many times do you have to be told that NEX is part of the Alpha brand? I’m surprised Andrea hasn’t kicked your trolling arse out of here by now.
Vivek
4 months ago |Pathetic = not useful.
PhotoNut
4 months ago |Yeah, but we all know that Alpha = Sony/Minolta Alpha *Mount* and NEX = E *mount*.
There is nothing “Alpha” about the NEX with the exception of the NEX7 which can actually use the Alpha strobes.
I’m sure that with a suitable adapter one can use Alpha mount lenses on m/43rds.

Randy
4 months ago |Yeah the retards that had all their factories submerged in one of worst floods in the modern era where thousands of people died. The just after their home country was annihilated by a massive earth quake and flooding What are these people at sony thinking? I mean geez they should have been ready for 2 entire countries to be annihilated by natural disasters. Nikon and Canon didn’t oh wait they are doing the SAME EXACT THING and SHIPPING NOTHING that isn’t made in a factory in Japan that was built to build other products. You’re the retard dude.
Arnold

PhotoNut
4 months ago |Excuses, Excuses , Excuses.
Nikon is based in Japan and also had factories damaged in Thailand but yet I can walk into any bestbuy or camera store and pickup any 1-series camera I want. Or If I’m into DSLRs I can pickup their flagship APS-C D7000 along my choice of *any* lens I want. What about fullframe? I can walk into a high end Camera store or go online and buy a D3s or D3x. Same thing with Canon.
Sony bean counters were trying to cut corners/save money by moving all their new DSLT/NEX production overseas and that came back to bite them when they did not even diversify their oversea manufacturing plants.
They did this even when they were in the process of launching make-or-break-it products for the Holiday season. That was dumb!
All the emphasis on the disasters is an attempt to coverup poor logistics and manufacturing problems at Sony with the tragedy of others.
Spoon
4 months ago |Funny selective reasoning, not surprising coming from you ofcourse.
The 1 series is about the only Nikon ILC that isn’t in short supply due to the exact same disasters because it was produced elsewhere.
Arguably, Nikon was hit harder than Sony.

Fortunately, I was able to grab a body-only that came into WEX between Christmas and New Year. Doesn’t make sense.
GunnarK
4 months ago |Nikon does NOT deliver more than Sony, but there may have been some differences in how much each of these two companies had in storage and in transit just before the disaster struck.
Of course Sony have more factories than Nikon – as a company Sony is an order of magnitude bigger than Nikon. But as a system camera maker it is the opposite. Sony manufactured almost all cameras in the flooded Thai factories (except A850/A900 probably), while Nikon still has camera production facilities in Japan.
Canon on the other hand got away with no camera factories flooded, just a printer factory.

4 months ago |Hopefully they cancelled all orders because they realized how dumb an APS-C 50mm lens is.
The Lotus Eater
4 months ago |Dumb to you maybe, but not so for many others.
Jason Hicks
4 months ago |Dumb? Have you ever taken pictures of people? The most popular portrait lens for full frame is 85mm, and a 50mm on aps-c is around 80mm. Secondarily, the 50mm focal length is known to be relatively easy to design for superior sharpness, speed, compact size, and low price.
How is this dumb?
PhotoNut
4 months ago |50mm lens is one of the few fast primes is dumb if your CSC (Compact System Camera) was designed from the beginning to use APS-C sensors. Since it is a new mount with no previous 35mm/legacy lenses, it makes no sense to design the lenses as if the cameras have 35mm film sized sensors.
Sony should have released a 30-35mm f/1.4 or 1.8 lens a long time ago.
Look at Fujifilm, they announced a new APS-C based EVIL CSC and immediately they will have three small fast primes for it (including 30-35mm f/1.4) that are designed around the sensor and the APS-C size.
Sony on the other hand takes years and only releases large slow lenses not suited for the sensor they themselves produced (Check the corner performance of the overly wide 16mm f/2.8 or the large slow 30mm macro)
Jason Hicks
4 months ago |Photonut: You are making the assumption that the 50mm 1.8 is made for full frame: “it makes no sense to design the lenses as if the cameras have 35mm film sized sensors.” The 50mm 1.8 was designed specifically for APS-C sensors, and therefore does not cover a full frame circle, so you argument is baseless.
I agree with you that a 30-35mm lens would make a great walk around focal length on an APS-C, similar to a 50mm on a full frame. By the same accord, it makes perfect sense to use the 50mm 1.8 for portraits on an APS-C camera in a similar fashion to using an 85mm on a full frame camera. I doubt you would say an 85mm lens is useless on a full frame camera, although, you are PhotoNut, and I wouldn’t put it past you.

4 months ago |Sony is a CONSUMER company, Fujifilm is a SPECIALIST company, that builds cameras like the GF670 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/678957-REG/Fujifilm_16019089_GF670_Rangefinder_Folding_Camera.html So of course they have different priorities.
It’s just a happy accident that the 5n is such a good video camera and that they are making something like the NEX 7. I’m damned impressed that they got a quality lens like the Zeiss 24mm f1.8 designed and on it ways this fast.
Colin
4 months ago |No. “Normal” field of view lenses are known to be relatively easy to design for superior sharpness, speed, compact size, and low price. 50mm on APS-C is not a normal length. If they want this to be a portrait lens, fine, then make a 60mm lens. If they want this to be a normal lens, great, but make it 30mm. It makes absolutely no sense to produce an awkward somewhere-in-between prime before you even have a normal lens on the market!
This lens exists because some ad wizard said “hey look, our 50mm lens for Sony Alpha is one of our biggest sellers, let’s make one for NEX too!” without having the slightest clue as to how optics work.
David
4 months ago |Just be patient people.
Sony said they can meet customer demand in February-March. It’s still mid January now. There may be dribs and drabs of stock around, but no retailer has consistent supply yet.
I’m annoyed too. I don’t understand why the a850/900/55 etc are discontinued, especially when the a65/77 aren’t available. Basically you can’t buy anything other than an entry level camera!
But I realise I have to be patient. The a65/77 will be back soon. Same with the NEX-7, and soon the a99 and new lenses. So just be patient.

4 months ago |As a increasing disappointed A-mount fanboy I have to say if Sony makes a camera and stamps the Alpha logo on it it’s an Alpha camera.
But if Alpha = A-mount then???
Sony released several lenses for us FF shooters since the a900/a850 hit the market, a nice 24mm Zeiss back in 2010 and about the same time, a very decent for the price 85mm. Dare we expect more?
I don’t recall any FF lenses in 2011 but the rumor is for several lenses maybe in October 2012

4 months ago |Y’know – I read all the messages above. I know about the tragic tsunami and the earthquake. BUT I have to say that Sony has really dissapointed me. Any bottom line for a business should be to keep promises for their customers who buys their product. Customer relationships should be important, yet my delivery date has been pushed back three times already. Each time, every month, I got an email stating an “estimated” date – and every time I verified over the phone. 3 months. To put into perspective, that’s approximately 90 out of 365 days, 1/4 of a year. To me, that’s not an estimate. That’s incompetence. Loyal customer aside, I find it very uneasy that they can just throw random dates and not feel any responsibility. Is it really hard to count the number of pre-orders, subtract the number of manufactured cameras per week, and give me a REAL estimate? I’m not upset. I don’t care if I get the camera later than expected. There was a natural disaster. I get it.
I’m just appalled at how they’re dealing with their issue. To be blunt, I feel as if I am being treated like a donkey with a carrot dangling from a stick, strapped to my head.
