Apple to use Sony sensors in future products?

9to5mac just found an interesting statement from Howard Stringer (CEO of Sony). He said “that their camera image sensor facility in Sendai was affected by the recent tsunami/quake. In the next breath, he said something to the effect of getting image sensors to companies like Apple will be delayed.“. It is rumored that the next iPhone 5 will feature the same 8Megapixel backlit camera used inside the new Xperia neo (Click here to se that cam).
I know this is not an Alpha related rumor but at leats it’s good to hear that Sony sensors are gaining an interesting momentum. According to DxOmark Sonys APS-C sensors are better than the Canon-Panasonic-Samsung sensors. And now even Apple will use Sony’s knowledge.

I’d just like to remind you that the only Sony Ericsson available Neo on sale in Amazon is in the German Division. It is not yet available in the US (Amazon) market.
Personally, I wouldn’t want Sony giving their tech to Apple. Steve Jobs will berate and insult it as soon as the next version is out. Besides, the Arc, Neo, and Play (not to mention the PSP) are in direct competition with the iPhone and iPods.

2 years ago |Steve Jobs never insults technology inside Apple’s devices. And Sony’s Cameras are in direct competition with Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, etc. Seems to work ok for everyone.

What’s your point about cameras? The sensor? Well at least the companies that use the Sony sensor are friendly to Sony. Sony, Apple, and Microsoft, (and Nintendo for that matter) are in an all out war in the gaming industry.

My point about the cameras is that it is exactly the same as with the cameras. As much as Apple is competing with Sony in mobile gaming, Sony is going against all others (and specifically Canikon) very heavily.

It’s the OS and what kind of deal they can get from the service provider. A camera is just a perk. Sony is more concerned about selling sensors – no matter what the competition is.

2 years ago |Geez. Sony President was talking about Sony’s Exmor-R small size sensors for phone cameras not APS-C sensors! Sony is *not* supplying Apple with Cameras.
Sony is competing with Omnivision for contracts to supply future Apple IPhone/IPad devices with backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensors.
