Buyers intention poll. What are you going to buy?
We know a lot about the upcoming new cameras and lenses but we also don’t know some important things like the exact final price (which will differ form country to country) and image quality. If you think you missed something click here to browse in our rumor archive: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/category/rumors/.
Now I am curious to see your buying intentions before the real announcement! Let me know your “shop feeling”
How to read the percentages: Every user can select one or more products. Because of that the summary of all percentages is higher than 100%. If for example you read 64% near one of the products this means that 64% of all voters voted for that product.

Vlad
9 months ago |Why add a “None” option if it is the “Buyers’ intention poll”?
David
9 months ago |Because it’s a valid option.
I’ve been posting here for months now but it’s unlikely that I will buy any of this new stuff.
That’s because I am waiting for new full frames and alpha lenses. I don’t need another APS-C camera, as it is mainly just as a backup. But I’m interested in the a77 as it shows the future direction Sony will be taking.. and so far I absolutely LOVE it!
And of course more users, more products, more accessories is ALWAYS a good thing!
Vlad
9 months ago |I was focusing on the semantics, nothing more.
Optimus
9 months ago |Agreed! And I don’t think it’s just semantics.
I’m not interested in knowing how many people are NOT going to be buying any of these related items.
What is interesting and relevant are the #s (total, but mostly relative to each other) of buyers of each of these products.
It doesn’t really matter that it’s there as an option… I just don’t see at all why it’s necessary.
Vlad

9 months ago |I see the vast majority (at around 12 votes total) go for the A77 + 16-50mm f/2.8 SSM lens combo. Just like me.
At last, it’s SO nice to see a bright(!) kit zoom that starts at 24mm. So far, all the other kit lens were much darker and all started at 28mm, which is pretty much more restricted for indoor shooting.
UPDATE: in about one minute after posting my note, at 46 votes, NEX-7 has become the second.

9 months ago |Andrea, can we have another option for next fullframe?
We have to differentiate between trolls, those who can’t afford, and maybe those who’d rather keep their current set (maybe wait for FF).
Personally I find it rather hard to believe if someone keep coming back to this site, but with no intention to buy anything. 1 reason I can think of is because they wait for fullframe.

9 months ago |Well I went for A77 and NEX-7, since I still don’t know which one.
Either I jump ship from NEX to Alpha.
Or I stick with it. So far I only got the NEX-5 with the 16mm and 2 Minolta ROKKOR MF lenses, so switching wouldn’t really be a problem.
Just don’t know right now which way to go…… ai ai ai ai.
Can’t wait until tomorrow, hopefully there are some more pics of the back of the NEX-7 leaked soon.
@Andrea: about the 2012 rumors comming up, what about NEX lenses, or are they only Alpha FF ?

9 months ago |Well yes the 16-50mm for the A77.
I’m really looking forward to the Zeiss and the 50mm 1.8 E-Mount
Even though I love my 28/f2 and 50/1.4 Minoltas.

duque
9 months ago |Hi Carl.
Well thanks for the hint.
But those are Alpha Mount lenses, which they need the A-to-E adapter right ?
Doesn’t that make the whole thing a bit bulky (I am still hoping the E-Mount lenses won’t be that bulky lookong/feeling).
Also, isn’t the AF quite slow with the adapter ?
Sky_walker
9 months ago |it’s still not that big, but you benefit from high quality
Only… autofocus… well… it’s contrast detection… so… erm…
Carl
9 months ago |The AF lenses are a bit shorter than their MC Rokkor counterparts. I think the 49mm filtered MD versions are slightly smaller again, but I haven’t seen them in person.
The manual focus SR mount has a flange distance about 1mm shorter than the Alpha mount, so the adaptor will need to be about 1mm longer.
The current A-E adaptor won’t autofocus screw drive lenses (though it will give auto aperture at least), but there’ll supposedly being a new one coming that can, using phase detection.
jann
9 months ago |Unfortunately the “new” Minolta MD lenses with 49mm filterdiameter didn’t reach the image quality (sharpness or bokeh) of the good old MC Rokkors.
I missed the AF too sometimes, but anyway – the combination of Nex + mc 58mm or mc 50mm makes a lot of fun

9 months ago |Any word since few days about the LA-EA2 ?
SonyA77
9 months ago |Depends on the final A77 body price.
At 1200USD perhaps, but that is stretching what I would pay for the A700 replacement (the A65 is not it) and I am more like to stay with the A700 for a long time instead.
At 1400USD or more, then absolutely not, Sony have made a huge mistake putting a premium price tag on it, most non-Sony people will buy a Canikon.
IMO Sony should offer to trade-in the A700 since we have waited so long.
David
9 months ago |I’ve said this already but like it or not, the a77 has some damn amazing specs. You can’t expect that AND expect it to be cheaper than Canon/Nikon.
And really, $1200 isn’t a lot of money for such a good piece of equipment that is cutting edge right now and will be good for years to come.
SonyA77
9 months ago |You can have as many bells and whistles on it as you like, but it will not sell when there are MUCH cheaper Canikon alternatives.
David
9 months ago |Which are older and targeted at different people.
Sony is a massive company. Do you really think they don’t understand how to market consumer electronics? Lol
SonyA77
9 months ago |The cheaper Canikons are not targeted at different people to the A77 buyer! For many, the D7000 is their first dSLR as the A77 would be and is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the higher-end A77 price, just as good and possibly still better.
I actually don’t think Sony understand how to market or price their dSLRs, the evidence is there for those that choose to see it, there hasn’t been any effective marketing. Sony have not supported the dealer network, they have not given kit to professionals. The proof is that Sony dSLRs still continue to sell poorly against the well established brands.
Do try to put yourself in a beginners shoes, somebody with a grand to spend. You’ll read the magazine reviews where EVERY one of them recommends the D7000. You’ll read forums saying that Sony is crap, they are an electronics company and lack lenses.
How about somebody looking at something above the D7000? Again you run into the reviews and hearsay above. Are you really going to spend 2 grand of hard-earned on the A77 with lens instead of going for a Canikon?
I love my A700, but let’s have a bit of realism here.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Don’t bother David. SonyA77 does know it better than Sony Corp. and soon(tm) he is going to overtake whole business from them thanks to his brilliant ideas posted here for weeks.
Carl
9 months ago |I can’t say I’ve ever met someone who bought a D7000 as their first DSLR. Maybe I move in the wrong circles.
SonyA77
9 months ago |@Sky_walker. Oh I forgot that this is a Sony fan-boy site and only positive comments on Sony are allowed…
SonyA77
9 months ago |@Carl, you obviously move in the wrong circles. I know a fair number of first time D90 and D7000 users. On the Canon side it tends to be 5xx/600D.
Carl
9 months ago |I know a bunch of people with D90s. That seemed to be the Volkswagen Beetle of DSLRs, they just kept on churning them out. The ones with Canons mostly have x0D and x00D models. I only know one other person with a Sony, and theirs is an A700. But that demographic sample, Sony users are the more high end crowd.
David
9 months ago |You’re right for much of what you said. But the tactic shouldn’t be to simply be a lower price. You read my post yesterday where I explained why that was a bad idea.
It’s better to have lots of DIFFERENT features that CAN’T be compared on price. Just being cheaper is a very bad tactic.
As for those reviews, nay-saying on forums etc. That will change by keep producing quality products, dealing with criticisms etc. Sony has/had a bad habit of crippling their own products and not fixing it. Not fixing the studio flash a55 issue with firmware is just lazy.
The a77 looks great, and within a week we will have a ton of reviews to confirm/deny that. It really looks like they listened to a lot of concerns and criticisms this time around.
If they keep this up, people WILL take notice. And it’s those “geeky” people like us who post on the internet and talk about cameras.. we are the ones who influence the beginners buying decisions.
By simply being cheaper, you just establish yourself as the cheap brand. And nobody wants to buy into that. It’s better to compete in areas where canon and nikon can’t or won’t, rather than try and outprice them at their own game.

9 months ago |A77 is a nice camera, but according to specs it isn’t groundbreaking. I understand A5x(x) or A700 user excitement, but as A900 user I want to see A77 tests. What is much better in A77 over A900?
High frame rate? We still don’t know how many frames in series a77 could take with (slow) SD card. Actually SD (and MS) card only is huge disappointment. I’m very familiar with performance differences which are dependent on card speed.
IQ should be better than A900, but didn’t expect huge difference. High ISO usually take special attention and expect 1-2 stop improvement over A900.
Video could be nice, but dedicated camcorders always will be better.
For me most valuable is tiltable screen and live view, while I doubt EVF will outperform A900 OVF.
AF and overall speed improvement is welcome, but is it groundbreaking?
One thing for I could like in SLT cameras is fixed mirror. For A900 huge problem is mirror movement induced camera shake especially with slow shutter speeds.
Pablo
9 months ago |I still think, the NEX7 should be cheaper than the A77. I mean, IT DOESN’T HAVE IBIS, so how can they charge the same money for it as for the A77 ??
duque
9 months ago |I do agree on that.
To me the price for the NEX-7 compared to the A77 is a bit high, maybe 100-200$ cheaper and it would make sense.
But, let’s say the NEX-7 performs on paar with the A77 then on the other hand I’d still pay the price and would find it ok, but I have a feeling it won’t be up there with the A77. Or at least there hasn’t been that much image quality talk.
Werner Ruotsalainen
9 months ago |Also add that the NEX series still doens’t have a high-quality kit zoom (the 18-55? That’s more of a joke…), particularly not one starting at 24mm equiv… The NEX7 should be priced far below the A77.

9 months ago |A77 and maybe a grip if my vgc70am won’t work… A65 is starting to look too much like an a55 refresh to me. We will see tomorrow!
Tanglefoot
9 months ago |Agreed on the A55 refresh with the A65. It seems to have lost the A77 type articulating screen which, for me, was the thing that made it tempting.
I’m going to wait for
a) the price to go down – at least after christmas
b) see what we are getting FF wise
My A580 takes plenty good enough photos so i have no dire need to rush and upgrade & if they come out with some good FF stuff i would rather save the money for that.
FF with OVF Live-view tiltable screen a-la A77 & a price £2000 or cheaper would make me a very happy man
Carl
9 months ago |No love for the A65, it seems.
Nothing on that list really appeals to me, but my taste in gear isn’t exactly mainstream. 2012 will probably be significantly more interesting.
Tanglefoot
9 months ago |The A65 seems to have been dumbed down – the first pictures we saw of it had an articulating screen similar to the A77 & people were expecting a second controll wheel. These two things made it look too much of a bargain compared to the A77, so Sony – having read many of the comments to the like on here – decided to dumb it down to the point it now seems like a simple A55 refresh with the sensor as the main upgrade.
The sensor in the A55 isnt exactly a slacker & i think sensors have now got to the stage where the need to upgrade to newer tech isn’t there any more – very few users really need more than the 16MP & the usable ISO range is fine for pretty much all day to day situations.
So who is going to buy the A66?
A few MP junkies who are too tight to splash out on the A77 & a few upgraders too skint to buy the A77 but the A65 doesnt really seem like the budget A77 that we were hoping for as i think Sony have done their usual trick of dumbing it down too much.
This may be a good thing as i think it will help sales of the A77 which will boost its visibility in stores & publications if demand is much higher – better one big hitter than 2 also-ran cameras in the sales rankings…?
slo.metallc
9 months ago |Well A65 is probably aiming to that part of consumers that think they need something better than A35 but they don’t need a full pro camera.
I’m going to consider the price difference between A77 and A65 and I might just go for A65 just because of price…
Since I’m upgrading my A200 and I’m not a professional that would have to shoot in all kind of environments, so the dust and moisture sealing and magnesium housing, 12 fps instead of 10fps, 1/8000 shutter speed and top LCD are not “must have” for me…
But I would like to have fast zoom lens and that 16-50mm f2.8 does tempt me… so I might just buy a77 if the kit price will be reasonable.
But I will definitely wait till next spring so that real users will tell how the EVF is working and that prices will fall… and I hope to get a chance to test both of a65 and a77 for a day or two before I buy one of them.

9 months ago |Most of the complaints are about it being too big, and the 55-210 is even bigger.
Jennzhen
9 months ago |Do you think they will buy it if it became pancake-size, but with the same price? I won’t
Carl
9 months ago |Well, putting the laws of physics aside for a second, a pancake sized, stabilised 55-210 with good optical quality… how many could say no to that?
Jennzhen
9 months ago |Unfortunately, lens IQ is always tied to law of physics.
Usually the bigger and heavier the lens, the better the IQ.
Well unless some dumb designers put bricks inside or something

I have no sympathy whatsoever for keeping back software-only features that add virtually nothing to production costs but instead are due to certain marketing strategies.

As for the price drop, I’ll get more than that back for depreciation when I do my business tax next year. I see no need to sit scared on the fence. Fortune favours the brave, don’t you know?

Never the less I’m going to wait for the Sony full-frame to be announced and planning on replacing both of my a850’s then.
Also, I’m still on the fence over the current EVF design but eager to see how it preforms as both as a studio and street camera before I spend thousands of dollars replacing what I’m using now.
If the a77 is as good as I think it is and Sony continues being painfully slow product announcing even a full-frame roadmap then I may add one to my bag because this camera looks like a real bargain!

Canon is a major electronics company but maybe Nikon is slipping a little and is ripe for a takeover by someone like an Apple or maybe even Sony, but my point is both of these major camera makers are still in the business to make high quality cameras and optical components.

With that reasoning, I’m leaning towards just getting the VG-20 and the adaptor. yes, it’s over 200% more with the new adaptor but spending $2500 on the right thing is better than spending $1200 on the kind-of right thing.
