in all points, my new Nex 5N is better
and ther even is a finder!

without finder, the Nex 5 is just a nice toy.

Coming from a full frame dslr for work, I wanted a small camera for holidays and social snaps, but couldn’t go back to a small image sensor. I decided on the nex-5 because of the sensor size, image quality and mirror less interchanble lenses.

I’ve been on holiday for a month and have taken about 2000 shots. Overall I like the camera a lot although I have a few gripes. I just wish someone would make the perfect small camera! Sony almost has but it’s not there yet.

1. It’s a camera, dah so why does Sony not have SEPARATE control wheels for shutter and aperture? I want another scroll wheel next to the shutter release. It takes too long to switch between the two in manual mode. And why we’re at it, there should be another wheel for ISO, it’s just as important when setting exposure. My point is, one wheel takes too long to set the exposure.

2. Colour. I feel it has well over saturated reds. I shoot raw so it’s not too much of a problem, but still I’d rather not have to tweak. Along with the reds, I don’t like the way it handles skin tones under tungsten or low K lighting situations, it’s really hard to bring out natural skin tones under these conditions – way too red. While we’re on white balance, it doesn’t handle multiple different light sources very well. Say, candle light at dusk. The background is very very very blue. The subject is very very very red – impossible to balance. Way less forgiving than my other camera system.

3 Lenses. Where are the small Fast e-mount primes? The lens that yields by far the best results for me is a $200 canon FL 55mm 1.2. And it’s over 40 years old. I’m basically hanging out for the zeiss 24mm prime.

Pros. Fun, small, high quality image, great shallow dof with fast primes

Cons. Colour, fast manual control, needs more e-mount lenses.

It’s not all negative! I would still recommend the camera system it’s just not quite what it could be.

The only thing I have to complain about is the lack of full video controls. Other than that this camera is perfect in my opinion.
