Sony FE 28-70mm tested at Photozone. Says it’s good for the A7II but not for the A7rII

Photozone tested the Sony FE 28-70mm lens and writes:

It may be a good lens on a Sony A7S (II) but the 42mp sensor of the Sony A7R II is clearly out of its league. The center quality is up to the task but the quality at the outer image regions leaves something to be desired – at all focal lengths. Lateral CAs are fairly decent. The amount of vignetting is low thanks to image auto-correction (which you can’t deactivate). It’s also a good idea to activate distortion correction because the native characteristic isn’t pretty.
Judging the quality of the construction is always a bit tricky but the Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS certainly feels like a well-made lens. It is, of course, mostly made of (good quality) plastics but there are no wobbly parts. The rubberized control rings also operate nicely. It’s even weather-sealed which is unusual in this lens class. The AF doesn’t stand out it’s quite fast and silent. Given the fact that it is a slow lens, the optical image stabilizer (OSS) can certainly come handy in low light scenes.

ePhotozine posted the full Sony 85mm F/1.8 FE lens review:

The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 lens is superb to use, and also superb in many ways in terms of its performance. The lower cost compared to most 85mm lens does not seem to have reduced the performance at all. So full credit to Sony for achieving this. The one weakness is the tendency to flare against the light, which is a shame, but it need not be a deal breaker, depending on the sort of image making we do.
To summarise, an excellent performance from a well-priced lens and one that can easily be Highly Recommended.

Dpreview first impressions on the new Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE: “excellent sharpness wide open”

Dpreview posted their quick impressions on the FE 85mm f/1.8 lens:

  1. balances superbly on Sony’s a7-series bodies
  2. Focusing is silent and fairly quick
  3. excellent sharpness wide open
  4. Bokeh appears very smooth
  5. lot of purple and green fringing wide open

They also notices something interesting:

Of particular interest is our observation that this lens, currently, focuses wide open* on an a7R II (or, technically, opens up to F2 if you’ve selected an aperture smaller than wide open). This addresses one of our largest complaints with recent Sony lens releases that focus stopped down, often slowing focus in low light or forcing otherwise capable phase-detect AF systems to revert to contrast detect-only. It appears that, at least for now, Sony’s recent 100mm STF and 85mm F1.8 lenses address this issue, and without an image cost to boot

That’s a very good news!
