Now this is intresting and i see this in 2 way's (Personal view)

1. Sony are trying to save money as the world has come out of global reccession and they need to reduce cost's to do that i see them making the alpha's smaller regardless of if it's high end or not. this will result in lower production costs for them.

hence why we are suddenly seeing a massive increase in mockups for mirrorless alpha's and more cmos sensor's.

2. Now currently we know most of the current alpha's except the 230 , 330 and 380 use the FM500H M series info battery series big problem is that battery type is big and rather long shaped , yes that might mean more space for cells but it means that the camera has to be larger to support it , but newer type batteries like the 330's NP-FH50 means the camera can be considerably smaller down to the A230 , 330 size's resulting money reduction again for sony will it mean a new battery grip will need to be designed.

3. Weight reduction , now the A230 for example weighs roughly 300grams (with battery) the A700 is more heavy so it makes sense lose some size and weight and make it easier to carry around.
