I know, can you believe those high ISO samples? Man. The highest had some image processing going on, but the second-highest was incredible! In side-by-side tests, this is going to kick the crap out of m4/3rds!

4 years ago |Am I the only one that thinks it’s odd that the lens diameter appears to be wider than the height of the body? Aside from that they’re good looking cameras. Not sure that I’d ever want to use a zoom lens on a body this tiny though. Hopefully they’ll get working on the pancake primes ASAP.

4 years ago |Is the 1080i a hardware or firmware limitation? Would be nice if the NEX3 can be “flashed” to have 1080i
BTW, AUD$1000 is expensive for the base kit

Will

I’m guessing hardware, since the NEX5 grip looks like it has extra room for extra circuitry.
Or maybe that bigger grip is just for more batteries?

4 years ago |I like the

Small form
non built in flash but I think it still comes with one. (I could be wrong on that point.)
I dont like the
large slow lens.
lens choice 18-200… bla ick Huge! Why come out with this 1st? I would say the most important lens to me would be a 200mm, 60mm micro and 20mm (so 16 was a fine start but (i know i sound like a broken CD:) but its large)
why the big grip on the 5? with no photographic tool added like a scroll wheel.
and the real deal breaker for me no EVF.
devorama
4 years ago |Hmm, I just noticed the two zoom lenses have “OSS” after their aperture/focal length. On the outside of the barrel of the zoom it says “Optical Steady Shot.”
The 16mm pancake does NOT have this designation. I’m guessing that means it’s not stabilized.
Rayl
4 years ago |Devorama: 16mm doesn’t really need OSS.

4 years ago |I can see from the interface on the back how some earlier GUI shots looked like a touch-screen. The three circular buttons would seem to offer an interface not unlike that of some cellular-phones. Let’s hope its less confusing than navigating a Sony-Ericsson.
Ron
4 years ago |The 16mm has both a fisheye converter add-on lens and a angular converter, perhaps extending the range to 35mm?
Carlos
4 years ago |Why oh why on earth a 24mm? Why not a 1.4 35mm for street photography? the zoom is way too big………..
Disinto
4 years ago |Carlos – a 35mm is not a wide angle
Will

4 years ago |“BTW, AUD$1000 is expensive for the base kit”
Compared to what?
Some entry level dSLRs are less than that, but much bigger. The small sensored Canon S90/G11 are getting up there here, at least in retail stores. The G11 is $800 in JB Hi-Fi for example. Available for much less if you ship from Hong Kong, obviously (I’d be surprised is it’s more than $700 that way).
The most direct competitors, the NX10 & m43 cameras are all around the $1K+ mark.

I believe they made a mistake. I know that there is an optical viewfinder. But let’s hope I am wrong and Sony added the EVF

4 years ago |Booo it will not support any autofocusing of the A-mount lenses
Can’t use this with the 24-70cz or 70-300g
Guess I’ll wait for the next version when they can finally support those 2 lenses.

Sony announced today that it is developing a new type of AVCHD high definition camcorder which features key technologies powering the newly announced interchangeable lens digital camera, NEX-5 and NEX-3

4 years ago |Impressive set of features, not so small dimensions ( still OK ), but no IS on fast lenses means that low light capabilities are not fully exploited. So, I voted No, I won’t buy a NEX, at least until Sony makes something like 20 mm F1.4 OSS, and it won’t happen. It was nice to dream for a while, though …
FE
4 years ago |We have to wait for the reviews, but I seriously think Sony has hit a home run with this camera.
Disinto
4 years ago |at – This is a major flaw for me in that case. I really need the dial.
Vince
4 years ago |This camera is obviously intended for the P&S crowd, and the lack of many external controls should make that point clear. So, in order to make the cameras attractive to the P&S crowd, you need superzooms.
I’m amused by people dinging Sony for introducing an 18-200mm instead of prime lenses that are, for the most part, enthusiast items that are largely ignored by the masses (you know, the target market).
The NEX still might be able to attract enthusiasts, but for Sony, that’s just a bonus. What they’ll be looking at is market penetration in the P&S crowd.

4 years ago |I wish every lens was made like that, good robust metal, that looks awesome!

4 years ago |Indeed, I’d love the Sony’s marketing idea of having different kit set option of choices, so you can choose your most preferred lens from different kit set, rather than selling your unwanted kit lens via 2nd-hand market.
Gabriel
4 years ago |Yes, it’s a point and shoot camera, with looks like endless menu for such basic thing as changing iso
there is no hope for a fast prime like 50 f1/8 or f1/4 or 35mm f2.8 pancake. Mass market buy slr with zoom kit, that’s all. So a super all in one super-zoom is all people needs.
And my next camera will probably be the nx500/ex1 from samsung, for me wide fast zoom and rapid control over iso and aperture is more useful than big sensor. for small print or web publishing, 400iso is perfectly usable, and 800 acceptable (same sensor than s90), i’m just waiting for test to choose between s90 and ex1.
Well, if pana release their 14mm f2/8, maybe i change my mind.

4 years ago |No viewfinder for 18-55mm, no thanks. If only 24mm was 28mm…
Sam
4 years ago |Does anyone know at this stage if these cameras will record video/take photos even when the camera does not detect that a lens is attached. In other words when another third party lens is attached with a dumb adaptor mount. In this case the camera would not be able to communicate electronically. I know there is a dedicated proprietary mount for sony alpha a-mount lenses, but I want to use old zeiss lenses etc., and I am happy with making my own exposure and focussing. Any thoughts appreciated, even if you don’t know for sure!
Sam
4 years ago |Unfortunately as we all know by now there is no manual exposure adjustment possible during video recording.
Also there is no “exposure lock”, which could have made some creativity more possible.
I am now considering, as a “last ditch attempt at positive thinking regarding video on this camera” to think if the exposure adjustments give some sort of salvageable control.
These exposure adjustments are +-2. I am keen to know if anyone has heard if these steps are in increments of one, or in sub steps? In other words are there four overall steps of exposure adjustment?
Any indication of how much this translates to in real terms. This doesn’t need to be exact, but in terms of number of f-stops from -2 to +2 exposure?
Or if anyone has seen a video going from the highest exposure setting to the lowest?
Thanks!!

3 years ago |I’m impressed by the size of the camera itself, and its drive capability (7fps). However the camera is marred (so far) by poor lens choices.
Unlike the Panasonic and Olympus primes, the 16mm prime lens is simply too wide (and has too much distortion) to use as a default lens. But once you step up the kit zoom lens, the camera is much too big to fit in a coat pocket. Although the camera is small, the NEX5 + kit zoom is actually larger as a package than the EP1 + kit zoom.
As far as I’m concerned, if the camera no longer fits in my coat pocket, I might as well stick with a compact, well-balanced dSLR. For a second camera, I much prefer gf1 / ep1 with a useful prime, or canon s90 / panny lx3
