3 years ago |So is this NEX GUI really as bad as virtually every single review site makes out? They make it sound like the second you take the camera off of full auto mode you are in for a world of misery. Hopefully Sony is smart enough not to use an idiot-proof GUI on the NEX 7.

3 years ago |That’s Ok.. I wanted to see both anyway

3 years ago |i tested the Nex5 and 3, i dont know whats the hype about the bad GUI? i think its a good GUI for learner(the problem is that, those review site thinks they are too pro for the GUI, screw them), and the common accessed function are just aperture (which u are in A mode, its just the round dail u have to turn) and about 4 button to reach the iso setting (which most of us leave it as auto anyway)…. and the rest are rarely touch (except video and pana, i guess i use panasweep more then touching the iso)….
and this is the beginning of E mount, we could expect many line up of lens when the E mount videocamera comes in…. expecting a lot of F2.8 line up. or at least a cheaper constant F4 lineup.

3 years ago |Eric, the nex interface is better than what reviewers claim. try it in shop.

3 years ago |The NEX interface is usable, but that is all. I can’t understand people who say it doesn’t bother them. imanayAieR, no need to screw anybody. If the menu suits you, good for you, but don’t decide how other people would use it. I dislike it. I change ISO, AF/MF and whatnot and frankly ,my issue with it ,is this – it could’ve >easily< been better. It is not like people ask for something incredible – Sony already has great menus on their A700/A900 – a quick-navi would've been perfect.
Nobody says it's unusable, people. But I think those who bitch about it like many are surprised that Sony made it this way and really wonder about the reason – it is not like there is some compromise or something. I see only 2 reasons:
- Sony are really dumb
- it's marketing, they want to sell the upcoming NEX-7
Both are not good reasons for me.

3 years ago |i know how to take pictures so the menu system doesn’t bother me. If I didn’t know what I was doing and had to fumble around and guess settings over and over again then maybe it would bother me.
I can shoot and get great pictures from just about any camera even an iphone, sorry about others bad luck though.

3 years ago |“Sony is dumb” gosh dangit, not “Sony are dumb.” I see this all the time on forums.
Atkins
3 years ago |Mike, are you saying that all those reviewers and people who have issues with this camera, me included, don’t know how to take pictures?
mike
3 years ago |I am just saying that I don’t let equipment dictate whether or not I get good images like so many people do. It’s about the images for me, not the gear.
Atkins
3 years ago |Can’t agree more on the last comment, Mike. But I do not see anybody complaining about not getting great images. I have the opportuunity to borrow a friends’ NEX almost every day. It’s been almost a month. The issue is convenience. The small things that make your life easier. It’s not like Sony is some startup trying to figure out how things work or that cameras is some newly invented technology. The company itself (Sony) already has great menus in the upper models, so this really seems like going back. See, I am not complaining about buttons, let’s say they had to make a compromise with the price, size, etc. But the menu – no reason at all.
And as much as I agree that no matter the product we can take good photos, I am sure we will both like NEX more if it had quick-navi, for example. That’s all.

3 years ago |Sony also has great menus and great usability in the “lower” models – even if some small group of A700/A900 users will never be able to agree. It is all about how adaptive you are to approach other user interfaces. Perhaps I’am – like Mike – capable to grok those tools an use them efficiently. I tried a NEX these days in the shop and cannot understand whats the fuss about all those complainers. My only guess is that many reviews checked their results at other reviews prior to writing their own. Thats not to say the NEX-Interface is perfect – there are certainly things that could be done better, but its not THAT bad.

3 years ago |I’ve recently replaced my carry-everywhere m4/3 kit with Nex 5 and let’s get one thing straight; the controls pale in comparison to a GF1, let alone a full size DSLR.
The interface is dumbed down and most settings are buried halfway down long menu lists.
On the other hand, whether this bothers you or not depends much on how you shoot.
If you leave Auto-ISO on and shoot in Aperture priority without fiddling with settings like metering too often, the awkward interface probably won’t phase you.
If you take full control of the camera, shooting in manual and toying with the WB, changing several settings regularly between shots then this camera will drive you insane (bordering useless).
Of course, these are just 2 extremes. I think I fall somewhere between the 2 examples above, but I’ve learned to get over the handling of the camera in favour of the size/weight and IQ (in this case meaning high iso and slightly narrower dof).

3 years ago |It is what it is. There is no perfect camera, no one size fits all. yes there are things I would love changed about the NEX-5 but I use it to get great images none the less.
I could use my a700 and have all the dials and buttons and a slicker menu system, and I do use it sometimes, but it wouldn’t fit in my pocket. The NEX for me is a leaving the house camera. I am going to use it for getting the shots that I would otherwise have missed out on due to the a700 being so large, heavy, obvious, the NEX is small, light and inconspicuous.
The number one feature I like about the NEX is it takes great images, number two is it fits in my pocket.

3 years ago |Mike, I agree with you – size, IQ are great. But it is not as good as it can be. And I don’t want it to be “perfect”. Far from that. What I want is that they keep the menu that works better and that they created themselves! Or if they don’t, make another one that is better. I see no reason for making it worse, which it is. As I said before, buttons are certainly arguable – the size does matter. But the menu? What’s the reason? What is the compromise here?
Apart from that it is certainly usable, but hey, a Mercedes with a flat tire is usable too.

3 years ago |The best thing I have read so far on the NEX-5 is one “reviewer” actually complained that the flash was too difficult to attach due to the lens mount being so large.
So this “authority” on the NEX didn’t even know that the flash has a door that opens and you screw it down from behind, not from the front near the lens. These are the people giving advise on cameras, which is one of many reasons why I do not take reviewers advise on anything.

3 years ago |I played with the nex in store the other day. The menu works well, and is not at all how its been represented. One of my big surprises is how easy it is to use in aperture, shutter and manual mode which is what i was playing with the most. It was one of the easiest shooting experiences ive had with a new camera- in fact manual mode was simply amazing. I went home that day and preordered a black nex 5 16 mm- today sonystyle says it will be ready to ship on monday–i cant wait.

3 years ago |Isn’t the really interesting thing about Andrea’s post that he expects to post substantive rumors next week, and that he has hopes that details about the A7xx will be among them?
The GUI of the NEX cameras is such a departure from previous cameras that I believe literally no one has gotten around it yet, and so no one is qualified to speak to it. I haven’t even seen the camera in person, but I have used the wonderful A700 for two years, and I fail to see how any menu system could be more torturous–although Quick NAVI helps a lot. Let’s give the new GUI a chance.

3 years ago |“These are the people giving advise on cameras, which is one of many reasons why I do not take reviewers advise on anything.”
Oh, I would certainly agree with you. There is a lot of crap, same like it was with MicroFT in the beginning. As I said, I do like the NEX and in fact it really takes great pictures, I only wish it could’ve been a bit better. I am far from bashing it or something.
“Let’s give the new GUI a chance.”
Dulaney, I gave it a chance. I used it several times. But photography has been here for a long time, even digital photography. There are some things that can’t be done in 100 different ways. So if you change it, you screw it. Now, I am certainly not saying the camera is crap or unusable, but this menu is a reason enough for me to not buy it. And given that I do not see a valid reason for Sony to make such a menu, I am complaining about it.
