shame shame, maybe tomorrow ^^
kinda interesting how only the new lenses are on the NEX-7 flyer

9 months ago |It tell us that the NEX-7 is still in development. It was an early release from Sony, maybe a bit to early? Well as long as we soon get more information.
I hope DxO are early on testing NEX-5N and later A77, A65 and NEX-7.
Dave
9 months ago |From the A77 brochure…
“AEB lets you choose whether to vary the exposure values by 0.3 or 0.7 EV.”
Does this mean the A77 loses the 2.0 EV auto-bracketing option that is available on the A700!?
PLEASE somebody confirm this. That would be a 100% deal breaker for me. Why would they ever do that??
Michael
9 months ago |The A77 can bracket 3 or 5 frames with 1/3, 1/2 or 2/3 stops, and 3 frames with 2 or 3 stops.
Dave
9 months ago |Pfew…
Thanks so much for that info Michael. That’s even better than the A700 (which has max. 3 frames at 2.0EV).
Would’ve perhaps been a good idea for Sony to mention that in the brochure as well.

9 months ago |NEX-7 just isn’t ready yet. There’s no secret conspiracy
They *ANNOUNCED* it last week. As far as Sony is concerned, that is the first time that you’ve heard of it.
They announce it, then they will finish work on it, then release it.

9 months ago |I’m kinda sad…
When there were just the rumours, I was pretty sure the A77 was going to be my new camera.
And was I excited about it!
Now I think I won’t buy this camera after all, and they’ve not even begun to sell it yet.
It’s not so much the High-ISO issue everyone yammers about. I can live very good with ISO-1600 max.
What is really gonna be stopping me from buying is the video capability.
From what I’ve seen on the net, the videos shot in 1080p have horrible moiré and aliasing effects (seen the video with the boats in greece? funny coloured water and zig-zag boat rails!)
They want to sell this camera for about 1300€, I’ve heard?!?!
And there’s the NTSC/PAL issue I’ve already complained about (I still don’t see why they aren’t able to make all options available while my father’s 150€ compact cam can, well okay, not 60p/50p, but you can at least film under US and EU light without flickering).
Well, maybe after five years with Sony it’s time to give the others a chance.
It’s even more sad when I think about that I’d probably be friends with the new EVF. Hmm…maybe I’ll wait and see if they get it right with their next Alpha? But that’s what I said when the A55 came out…Damn! SONY!

9 months ago |For video quality I still could not judge it until I really test it and see somebody do a full review regarding the issue. However the frame rate choice is a very funny Joke that makes Canon Video DSLR great.
David
9 months ago |You’re assessing video quality from streaming on the net?
LOL
oppel
9 months ago |You’re right, I’m still hoping it’s the encoding that makes this gastly quality.
But what’s the point in posting such a video when you didn’t get this right…
monkeyfacemcbride
9 months ago |dont judge the video quality from those for goodness sake. The 1080p from most of the youtube-alikes is about 4mbps, down from the 28mbps source rate. Additionally, certainly on youtube, they downsize it for storage and up-rez for display, so its not even true 1080p when you watch it on the web, its upscaled from something less.
I’ve seen posts from some reviewers which state that the video quality is excellent with no moire whatsoever.
Edgars
9 months ago |Fully agree, even Sony F35 usually looks unconvincing in youtube.
Gorn
9 months ago |I’d wait a bit and see what the reviewers have to say about the video quality first.
Judging it now from those youtube-films is like judging the high-ISO quality from the first jpegs (or even worse).
The NTSC-PAL issue on the other hand is what really bugs me!
The only explanation why they don’t include both PAL and NTSC I can come up with is that Sony wants to preclude their European customers from buying the camera in the States (where it would be much cheaper).
If that is the case, it’s just stupid. There’ll be many more people not buying the camera for the lack of compatibility than there would be traveling the pond to buy one. Hey – and better selling one more cam stateside than not selling it at all, no?
I hope the real reason is not the one I proposed. Please, could anyone come up with another (real) one?
Do they take their customers for too stupid to select the right option?
Are there any differences in the hardware that make it complicate?
Up to now… i t _ j u s t _ m a k e s _ n o _ s e n s e !

9 months ago |I thought it’s laws set by the government (US/Europe?) that you can’t sell PAL products in NTSC market vice versa?
Gorn
9 months ago |What? No. That’d be the first time I hear about this.
And it means there’s a lot of illegal stuff on the market (well, there is, but not in the digital camera sector).
acolyte
9 months ago |Meh, might be wrong, but isn’t that what region coding is for? It’s basically a more granular designation than PAL/NTSC.

They really can write in such a way, you actually start to want this camera very, very much.
Initially I was sure I wanted this A77 camera as replacement for my A700 (before the announcements and previews last week), today I’m not that sure anymore. But let’s wait for reviews on final firmware and hardware. I hope reviews and opinions are changing for the better.

9 months ago |question 1: mf peaking = partial color filter?
question 2: the creative filter is set up front in camera then every subsequent shot is with filter effect or the filter is for post process image in the camera?
thanks!
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Filter effect works exactly as in NEX cameras and so do peaking mode. One doesn’t have anything to deal with another. Color filter is obviously post-processing.

9 months ago |Concerning a65 bracketing
Previously I have seen info about a65 AE bracketing equal to older entry level cameras, i.e. +/- 0,3 or 0,7 EV in 3 frames.
But here it states “Bracket: Cont., Bracket: Single, with 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV, 2/3 EV, 2.0 EV, 3.0 EV increments, 3 or 5 frames (2.0 EV, 3.0 EV: only 3 frames)”
That sounds better.
But I wonder what is correct since this PDF has text frames with arrows towards the AE Bracketing and Flash Bracketing rows. But these text frames are empty for me, and when I printed the brochure the frames were not present on paper.
Can anyone see text there? Does anyone know what the a65 bracketing performance actually is?
Michael
9 months ago |The brochures were obviously leaked during proofreading. The A65 has fewer bracketing options, 3 frames in 1/3 or 2/3 stops.

Reviewer opinion on A77 viewfinder:
“wizjer mi osobiście się nie podobał. Opowiadanie jaki to on świetny, jasny, wielki i jak łatwo go pomylić z optycznym można włożyć między bajki. Optyczny wizjer starusieńkiego Nikona D200 czy też już wiekowego 40D/50D rozkłada go na łopatki. Oczywiście moim zdaniem. Inni mogą twierdzić coś innego.”
From Polish to English it roughly means:
“Personally I didn’t liked the A77 viewfinder. Stories about it’s brightness, greatness, size, and how easily it can be mistaken with optical viewfinder can be put between fairytales. Optical viewfinder of oldie Nikon D200 or (also aged) 40D/50D beats crap out of it. Of course that’s my opinion. Others might think something different.“

9 months ago |Nothing above ISO400 for either the A77 or NEX5n? We’ve learnt nothing more about the higher ISO performance.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |They did it on purpose, as there’s no point in comparing pre-production version ISO quality. Unlike other websites they prefer not to confuse people with it.
Oh, and minor notes: all the photos are made with no enhancement options turn off (so sharpening, lens distortion correction, etc. is off). All photos were made in cloudy day with bad weather and quite poor lighting, that’s why the colors seem to be bit washed-out.

9 months ago |Firmware 1.02, noise here seems OK but focus imo not too good (clothes are sharp, faces of action scenes not, when there are 2 people: neither). Maybe bcs of the photographer?
Curious for High ISO but firmware seems to improve every time, so who knows they might surprise us yet.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Hmm… they really had photos from v.1.02? Interesting. never the less – issues with sharpness come from the quality of lens IMO. Besides that the guy had very little time to try out camera so probably it’s also a photographer fault, at least to some little degree.

Using the EXIF extension for firefox
EDIT: I found it – I wonder what was the button before that I used?? Yeah it’s 1.02 for the A77. So, are we disappointed?
Also, not looking at the Zeiss, when you pixel peep the NEX 5N with 50/1.8 is better than A77.

And it should be obvious that the gorgeous photos in the a77 brochure must have been shot with a noiseless OVF Nikon. No noisy Translucent Mirror Alpha would ever be capable of shooting such beautiful photos.

I need confirmation on something. Anyone know yet if the HVL-20AM will be usable as remote trigger for Sony High Speed Flash? In vertical mode, the built in flash triggers always leave a blind spot and are very unreliable. Not suitable for client portrait shoots. Most portrait shoots are vertical… hello?
I mount my HVL-20AM on a bracket with modified cable to a900. The range and reliability increases dramatically… thirty meters or more with rarely a miss fire. It’s incredible. But so far, that flash only acts as trigger on a900/850. Can’t use it on my a700/a200.
Can’t deal with unreliable flash connection on a clients dime.
Sony… please… think this out… Portraits are vertical. I need a good transmitter that fires light on both sides of photographer in vertical mode.

9 months ago |Our friend Kurt Munger made several interesting comments on this website yesterday.
Kurt is very sensible and not one to jump to conclusions. He expressed his disappointment over the a77 early reviews and wonders why Sony has so far failed to provide f/4 and f/2.8 full frame lens, as he put it “for people that don’t have a boat load of money” and also wondered if the often displayed at tradeshows but never marketed 500mm f/4 G lens wasn’t being used at Sony’s HQ is using it as a cigarette urn.
Do the Japanese allow smoking is their offices?
He has also concluded that “We now know where the center of the universe is for Sony’s camera division; the NEX system.” for better or worse (my words not his).
He had other “random thoughts” posted yesterday that are well worth reading

9 months ago |Only 70-200mm F/4 G for ~1000$ would by next day.
Except EVF, A77 will come with better performance, than A900 for half a price. Only A900/850 users could have a doubts because difference in IQ with preproduction firmware is not so huge.

9 months ago |They’re testing waters as usual. They know they’re fighting a losing battle, but so does Mac vs Windows. It’s a matter of how much will they push it to the limits. They know their SLRs won’t make much of a dent on Canikon, so they go for SLT. They go for innovation instead of a MP race just like Canon and Nikon try to go to head to head with each other.
Yup, time will tell. It’s still early. Not too early, but not mature either.

9 months ago |The most interesting thing i saw in the PDF was the Media section
“Memory Stick PRO Duo™, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™, SD memory card, SDHC memory
card (UHS-I compliant), SDXC memory card (UHS-I compliant)”
UHS-I compliant — i wonder how having a very fast UHS-I in the a77 will affect the buffer clear times.
UHS-I from wikipedia “UHS-I: The Ultra High Speed mode is found exclusively on SDXC and SDHC products. SDXC or SDHC products with the UHS-I symbol are capable of supporting data transfer speeds up to 104 MB/s. UHS-I quadruples the extant top speed of 25 MB/s.”
at 104 MB/s, the a77 could clear four 25meg raw files per second from the buffer.
acolyte
9 months ago |Still four out of 12.. Ahaha
Robby
9 months ago |ya, but the continues-high (8fps) mode, with a 104 MB/s UHS-I now could shoot quite a bit longer
Possible to clear half your shots each second.
I personally almost never use the burst mode…

9 months ago |Out of curiosity, I looked at some of the buried meta data inside the A65 and A77 pdf brochures. I wanted to know if I was looking at an image taken by the camera that was being advertised.
Verdict: Most of the time.
It appears they actually used those two cameras for most of the images for the large on-location type of images inside the brochures. Interestingly, they called them SLT-A01 and SLT-A02. I noticed they tweaked the firmware during the location shoots. In addition to those two cameras, they used other cameras, including a SLT-55V. However, not all were images were Sony cameras, for example they used a medium format camera and a P 45+ back for almost all of the studio shots of the A65 and A77 cameras. I seem to recall this or another PhaseOne back being used for some earlier Sony alpha brochures, too. Perhaps, it’s the preference of the product photographer they hired.
The graphic arts / marketing team developing the A65 brochure bought at least one stock image. That is, the image captioned “A65 XGA OLED Tru-Finder” at the bottom of page 8, is really an image by photographer Takeshi Hirayama, shot using his Nikon D700.
However, besides the studio shots, most of the images in the brochures were taken with Sony cameras, and the larger ones all seem to be A65 or A77.
The GPS seemed to work. So I learned that when they took these in June and July they had location-shoots in northern Japan in the Hokkaido Prefecture. For example, the pano image on page 22 of the A77 brochure was taken at the Northern Horse Park in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.
The other location, primarily for the A65 images, was in and around Manhattan, for example from Hoboken, NJ and around Highland Falls, NY for some of the river shots.
So, the good news is they eat their own cooking. That is, as far as I can tell, they actually used preproduction A65s and A77s for most of the important brochure images.

9 months ago |If you haven’t seen it… Here is a swedish magazine interviews a sport photographer that has tested the A77 with 300mm 2,8.
He says that he is really impressed of the speed camera, also the autofocus but the most that the time when your press the button until the photo is taken. The EVF is very good but not quite good as an OVF. The JPEG buffer is somehow confusing bad.
Hope someone there have the time to translate the whole video…
