2 years ago |I think the SEL18200′s MSRP is 100,000 Yen, so this should be around $640.
Almond
2 years ago |Slow, bulky, super-zoom… what a waste.

2 years ago |Looks like a nice powerful lens for the NEX platform
Can’t wait to see the reviews on IQ
and less than a $700.00 USD for this lens.
match it up with a NEX-7 and this could be great combo for street work, err….maybe a bit slow.
Michal
2 years ago |1000$ ????
Steve Jones
2 years ago |That strikes me as very expensive given that the DSLR zooms of similar specifications are less than half this price – and often less. Whilst, no doubt, there are extra costs in reducing the size it’s becoming obvious that many manufacturers are seeking to make CSCs, and their lenses, premium priced products when compared to DSLRs.
Of course it may be that this lens is an optical wonder compared to the DSLR alternatives, but forgive me if I remain somewhat sceptical.

2 years ago |there’s no size reduction at all! what’s with this price? what is Tamron smoking?
BlackLegSanji
2 years ago |68×96 vs 75.5×99 so yes there is a considerable size reduction.
Frosti7
2 years ago |Its the same lentgh = same camera bag = no real size benefit :\
but who cares, zoom’s always going to be bulky, now where is my 30\1.8 pancake?
ShamB
2 years ago |Possibly more a case that nobody buys lenses at MSRP, except the early adopters? Prices should settle after christmas…
Anon
2 years ago |Also, Tammy and Sigma lenses have a high list price that is NEVER seen on the street after the initial launch.
JonasM
2 years ago |It’s the price in Japan converted to USD; With a very strong Yen that’s what happens. The price in the US will be much lower.

2 years ago |What’s with Sony Germany? Will NEX-7 pre-orders also ship next week?
DP
2 years ago |Hmm, just checked the Sony Store Canada web site. The 24/1.8 is “backorderable,” but listed as shipping around 02/22/2012. Better than the 50/1.8 though–03/14/2012.

2 years ago |I came into a camera store last night just for the fun of it and they were unboxing a Zeiss 24mm for display. I bought it right away, it’s the only one they had in stock!

2 years ago |ReWard72 You should have waited 5 min maybe you could of got a discout for it being a display model
extra|ordinary
2 years ago |@reWards72 How do you like the lens? I actually ended up canceling my preorder on the Zeiss. While there are many reasons why I still want the lens(build, IQ, etc.), at the end of the day, I am just not a huge fan of the focal length.
That said, I would still consider the lens is it turns out to be a real gem.

2 years ago |Read the Luminous Landscape review of the Zeiss 24mm f1.8. They compared it to a Summilux 24mm f1.4 and they were quite impressed.
extra|ordinary
2 years ago |Thanks for the heads up. I had actually already read the Luminous Landscape review. I didn’t really have any doubts about the performance of the 24/1.8. I figured it would perform at a high level, as the LL review confirms.
That said, I am more interested in seeing more image samples and hearing user experiences. These days, I’m not so much looking for lenses that deliver absolute perfection. I tend to gravitate towards lenses that have character, a signature look in the way they render a scene. So far, I have not seen enough from this new lens to make any calls one way or another.
reWard72
2 years ago |I just love fast lenses, so far I’ve been using my 35mm f1.7 SLRMagic lens more than the Sony 16mm, 18-55 and 18-200 that I also have, even if it’s quite soft and manual focus. I’m looking for the same general feeling but with the right sharpness and the added convenience of an auto-focus. I don’t know how I feel about the focal length yet. If I end up finding it too wide I might just get the 50mm too.

2 years ago |any comparisons done yet on the tamron lens?

2 years ago |The MSRP of 18-270mm Di2 (for A-mount) is 80k and is 56,878 yen in Amazon.jp / $509.95 after rebate price in Amazon.com.
Now 18-200 Di3 is 69,800 yen in Amazon.jp.
So it will be around $650 in US , I guess…

Does anything in that name indicate it is stabilized?
Steve Jones
2 years ago |Yup – VC. That’s Tamron for stabilised (Vibration Compensation).
Mr Mom
2 years ago |Thanks for deciphering VC, Steve.
DP
2 years ago |was wondering what the VC stood for…
Slingshotbubba
2 years ago |Yes it is image/video stabilized, as indicated by its VC marking, which stands for Tamron’s Vibration Reduction. This should be a winner, now if Tamron can make some primes then we’re talking values!
REVENGE
2 years ago |Tamron will hopefully offer a ton of rebates on this thing.

2 years ago |Tamrons list prices are always ways above the street price.
In the most cases it wil be half of the list price.
e.g Tamron 17-50mm 2,8 list price 569€, streetprice: under 300€
RVN

Atlasman
2 years ago |I think the big news is Tamron’s support of the platform.
“Show me the money.” And Tamron is doing just that.
As for the lens, I’ll pass. I’m not looking for “one ring to rule them all.” The absence of NEX-based lenses is ok by me. My EXISTING glass fulfills most of my photographic needs.
The 5N taps into the past with amazing results. All of my legacy glass out-performs the kit lens. Not because the kit is a poor product, but because the legacy primes are better.
To Sony: focus on the body. In the mirrorless world, there are lots of razor blades to be had. I want bodies, not lenses.
Give me sensor-based image stabilization. Give me swivel EVF. Give me better video. Give me better image processing software—that’s part of the product. Steve Jobs would scorn at not integrating the software. Give me a more transparent product.
If the NEX had built-in stabilization, the translucent adapter would be a no-brainer purchase. And that means that Sony Alpha lenses are more viable acquisitions. And now the translucent mirror adapter would close up the last gap of weakness (high speed focus) in the NEX system.
I would buy into a slightly larger body to accommodate sensor-based stabilization. The bottom line is that the body would still be a lot smaller and lighter than mirror-based systems.

2 years ago |Heres my email from Sony on availability of Nex-7
Hello **********,
Sony USA is happy to announce that limited quantities of the new NEX-7 camera will begin shipping to select pre-order customers this month. Production capacity is severely limited, and will continue to be as we continue to rebuild and recover from the flooding in Thailand and its impact on our manufacturing facilities and overall supply chain. We’re continuing to push forward to restore full production capability of the NEX-7 and other affected models.
Again, thank you very much for your continued patience.
Sincerely,
Sony Customer Care

2 years ago |for this price I would prefer 18-270 + la-ea2
Z-man
2 years ago |I don’t know why they started with this lens. If they converted the 60mm F2 macro and put OSS on it, I’d have a lens that could cover the majority on my needs.
I actually just need that and a good 2.8 zoom that can go a bit beyond 55mm.
Joe
2 years ago |Do the Tamron lenses auto-focus? Or is this something only Sony lenses can do?
J-Man
2 years ago |Yes it auto-focuses, Sony published the E-mount specifications in hopes it will be heavily supported.
Tiwiliger
2 years ago |Will in camera lens correction as applied by the NEX-5N still apply to these up and coming 3rd party lenses or is that just purely Sony lens benefit? Additionally, if anyone knows, does the lens correction get applied to Sony A-mount lenses that are mounted via the LA-EA2 adapter or just E-mount lenses ?
Adi
2 years ago |I think the firmware needs to know about the specs of the lens to apply any correction. Will a firmware update do this for Tamron ? Who knows, depends of both Sony and Tamron. But speaking about third party lenses, Tamron and Zeiss are the most likely candidates to have their lenses in NEX firmware.
