First VG900 image samples with SLRmagic 50mm T/0.95 lens.
These are first image samples shot on the VG900 with the SLRmagic 50mm T/0.95 M-mount lens (with M to E mount adapter). Click on the images to see a larger version of it. Another source present at the Sony event said that Sony presented the VG900by saying it uses the same Nikon D600 Sony sensor

Bob
8 months ago |I think its very exciting. It gives a good idea what the full frame 50mm T0.95 lens can do on a FF NEX. Wish they made a FF NEX camera instead of a FF NEX video camera.
Booe
8 months ago |It’s simple, first they release big-bodied camera so everyone who needs FF badly buys it, and then they release compact interchangeable lenses FF. If they released NEX-9 first, they would earn less money. So wait for 2013 if you need NEX-9

8 months ago |agreed. these pictures are way too soft for practical use. Thus far every SLRmagic samples I’ve encountered either suffer from softness or corner vignettes. The best of them is still the 35mm F1.7, and only because we can get its unbranded version for $20 off ebay!
Rob
8 months ago |What an idiot. From initial testers the lens is as sharp as the $11,000 Noctilux if not better. Good luck finding your $20 FF 50mm 0.95 lens on eBay. Or better still, try using your $20 35/1.7 lens on VG900 in FF mode and see if it even come close in covering the FF sensor.

8 months ago |It may give an idea what it can do on still. But not on video. It takes a lot of focus pulling-skills to use it wide open in video. Especially handheld with range-movement.
Brian
8 months ago |It is as sharp as the Noctilux but a junk lens. Go over the the LUForum and ask around. Everyone canceled their orders after finding out it’s glued together an falling apart.

8 months ago |Read my post below about the fake rumors. I am currently talking to the three individuals spreading the fake rumors and they cannot even explain for their actions. The had a financial situation when there was an oppertunity for a Summilux and Noctilux and wanted money back and would do anything to get money back. They were in a tester program with a big discount and there is only a 3 warranty offer but they wanted money back after 2 months. If the opportunity to buy the lens comes in 5 months they would have done the same thing to get the money back. Brian, do you still wish to speak for them with your reputation? There will be a public statement soon. I have already contacted the admin of LUF that started the rumors. For example, one user had dust speck in lens after using the lens extensively for almost 3 months. Dust speck in lens is common for all brands. He goes on and claims he has 12 friends who has the same issue all over forums on LUF and Facebook. However, when he posted that on Facebook there were only a few test pre-production copies in circulation so where are his 12 friends? Another person at LUF said we were not responsible after 14days and there is no warranty. For his 50mm T0.95 LM lens it was clearly written in black and white text there is 3 yrs warranty. The third person is just outright telling lies as she claims she saw a specific persons lens fall apart and when I contact that person he said nothing is wrong with his lens. They did that to get attention and draw traffic to their blog. Very unethical practice IMO.

8 months ago |Strange: in the EXIF data (using PhotoME) I read “1.6x digital zoomed” for the first one and “1.2x digital zoomed” for the second and third ones.
Andrew
8 months ago |It’s entirely possible. The VG900 has a zoom button for zoom lenses. When prime lensrs are used there is a digital zoom function. The camera was hard to handle with a wire tied to it if you know what I mean I was new to the video camera and probably bumped into the button without knowing. I thought it was the same setting. At first someone from sony was tring the lens but focusing at T0.95 was difficult so the ball was passed onto me to make sure there are some decent images. It was a quick an dirty test to check out the vignetting and the shallow DOF potential of the FF VG900.
I thought it would be exciting to many to see the FF potential of the e-mount so i shared the photos. I am by no means a cinematographer so it is only suppose to be a preview/glimpse of still image captures.

8 months ago |Thank you for your comments, much appreciated. In that case it means you have used only part of the 24×36 sensor to take these pictures, so we still have no idea how the 50mm T/0.95 behaves on a full frame NEX camera.

8 months ago |A little stinky that LA-EA3 adapter doesn’t provide for screw drive lens functionality. Yet they didn’t have the moxxy to use a mount without an empty hole. Always says “something’s missing here”.
It looks like the original LA-EA1 with inner flange removed, yet with a permanent tripod mount instead of a removable one. LA-EA1 should have been designed without the flange to begin with. Early users reported flange shadowing appearing on images with some lenses. Removable tripod mount is better than permanent. More streamline when desired.
So what’s the advantage of VG900 extra price over a99?
Rob
8 months ago |1) The A99 consumer is not looking for a video camera
2) The VG900 consumer is not looking for a DSLR camera
CTPhotographX.com
8 months ago |Well I understand your point… But, Mamma Sony has gone to great lengths to accommodate both buyers with both cameras. I wish your comment was more true to the actual reality of the camera feature sets. I could live without the vid a99… and I’m positive there are VideTogs who could care less about the VG900 stills capability.

8 months ago |The a99 has SSI & the vg900 does not. The autofocus may be faster/better with the a99.

8 months ago |Is that lens for full frame at all? Because if filmed in crop mode (very likely) the test is not saying too much about the cameras true abilities

Its a full frame lens. In face the image circle is larger than that of full frame so it is the lens with the least vignetting amongst 0.95 lenses covering the 36×24 sensor size.

8 months ago |SLR Magic’s lens lineup is kind of confusing. They have TWO 50mm 0.95 lenses. One is a custom full-frame M-mount T0.95 (as in T-stops not F-stops). The other is re-worked C-mount 50mm F0.95 for mFT & NEX. The latter one is the one usually called the Hyperprime and it sells for around $1k. The former is the one that does so well against the noctilux but thats at $3k for the CINE version.
The F0.95 is nothing really special. The T0.95 is pretty incredible from what I’v seen/heard but there are reports of lax QC and build standards.
Andrew
8 months ago |Many of the posts on QC issues are lies and people trying to get attention or people trying to drive traffic to their blog. For example, leicaliker.com used our products announcements page to draw traffic to her blog to read first hadn QC issues she experienced. The admin dropped our lens on concrete floor and the lens only took a dent. Yet she said the lens is falling apart in her website and also said she saw first hand Todd Hatakeyama’s lens got loose ring issues. However, it is NOT true and she did NOT see Todds lens first hand getting loose and Todds lens has no issues at all. I am now working on contacting each individual to fix things. We first wanted to keep it calm and not say anything but as the issues are so widely and openly discussed there are no more privacy concerns. Another example is a person posting all over l-camera-forum and facebook leica forums of issues claiming he know of dozen of his friends having issues too. I disagree and still waiting to hear of the 12 person name list. There are many on the internet who “claim” they have a lens but most times it is not true and they do not have the lens. For example some say that there is no weight difference between the black and silver 50mm Summilux ASPH and they have owned both lenses before. However, it is not true as anyone who has handled both lenses before know the weight difference is quite obvious due to build material used. Some people think the color makes no difference to the weight and make false claims. So all in all I will slowly contact all websites and individuals to get things straight. There are mainly three people causing all the noise on the internet to attract attention and would be interesting to see what the two mentioned people above have to say. The third person is also spreading rumours there was no service after 14 days. That is a lie as well. The third person needed money to buy a used or new 50mm Summilux in Hong Kong and wanted money back as the only solution after 2 months of use. The LM lens version he had has 3 years warranty and the CINE version has 1 year warranty. If there is a small problem then you need to send the lens in for service during warranty period instead of making noise all over forums to get money back to buy another lens. Last but not least the three people were part of a confidential volunteer program testing the pre-production lens and issues should be reported back for improvement instead of posting publicly on websites. I am sure no other company can trust them with confidential information or unannounced lenses in the future for what they have done.
