Full Sony RX1 review at Luminous Landscape!

One of my favorite websites just reviewed the RX1: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony_rx1_review.shtml
It’s a must read article that ends with that sentence: “I hate sounding like a fanboy, but I must say that the Sony RX1 presses all the right buttons for me – no pun intended. Built quality is exemplary, haptics are mostly excellent, as are control placement and customizability. The Zeiss lens is truly excellent, and having a full-frame 24MP camera that can fit in a coat pocket and go almost anywhere without being an encumbrance makes this camera greatly appealing. One can always find quibbles in any piece of equipment, but the RX1 is more operationally all-of-a-piece and desirable than just about any recent camera in my experience.”
Sounds like Sony is on the right path with the RX series. Both the RX100 and the RX1 are well made cameras. Now let’s see if the RX10 is coming as next!

7 months ago |I never thought it was over priced but 2,000 would have been a nice price. I do think the metal hood for 199 is way over priced. I could get a nex-3 adapter and old 50mm lens on ebay for that price.

are RX series going to be all non-interchangeable lens cameras?

“…I regard Zeiss and Leica as among the world’s best lens designers and builders, and whether this process takes place by technicians and engineers who eat either sushi or bratwurst for lunch is pretty much irrelevant. The proof is in the images, and the rest is web-wanker fodder, not much more.”
His critic and to me quite essential is the close focus switch position and unable to engage some sort of locking mechanism to prevent misfocus.

At least Luminous Landscape has the ability to tell it as it is, from true professional’s perspective. Looks like Sony has yet another great product. About the RX10. I’d settle for an APS-C fixed lens camera with a 16-50mm f4 zoom. With a little better quality than the NEX pancake.

PS: Sony drop the prices in 1/2 so I afford this bastard!

7 months ago |I already own Sony RX10. It consists of Sony NEX-7 with Zeiss Sonnar 24 mm f/1.8 lens.

7 months ago |The only weakness that the RX1 appears to have is that it is not optimal for landscape shooting (which actually disappoints me, landscape sample pics are not that great IMO). Knowing that, the Sigma DPx Merrill and the RX1 actually complement each others: the Merrill has plenty of resolution for landscapes but is not as good for low light and moving objects (street shooting basically, where the RX1 excells). Want the best compact camera system? Buy the Merrill and the RX1 and you can do anything.

6 months ago |Luca, you can! Your 365 days are almost up. Then sell the NEX-7 and any 35mm equivalent lenses you have and don’t look back!

6 months ago |I wonder if it’d be possible to make a 2x zoom lens (35mm-70mm) F2.8 and keep about the same size. A 2x zoom would be good enough for some portrait working as well.
Engineering people, could you give an answer about that?

6 months ago |Luminous Landscape is such a poor reference for reviews.
A) The photos lack artistry and technical skill. The very ones in the RX1 review look like they were taken with a basic P&S or an iPhone. Nothing which catch the eye.
B) Those 100% crops are horrible. Not sure when soft and noisy equated to “desirable”.
It’s funny. The people who are talking up that expensive Beta camera the most, also seem to be the ones with the least photographic ability. Go figure.

6 months ago |Good review. Other than the part where he says, in regards to Auto ISO in M mode: “If only some other manufacturers (and you know who you are) understood the needs of photographers this well.”
Huh ? Hello ! Sony is about the only manufacturer who has been clueless about this feature, only recently implementing it in the A99 and RX1 (but not the A77 or RX100 or any NEX model, nor bothering with firmware updates to implement it).
So rather than put them on a pedestal, I’d say the correct take on this is more like: “Sony may not understand the needs of photographers, but finally caved in to their repeated demands for this feature.”

6 months ago |I don’t care if it’s a RX2 or RX10 but if the RX1 had a built in EVF I would buy it today… get rid of the pop-up flash and put the EVF in that space… That would be perfect!!!…
I understand the RX1 is getting rave reviews and deservedly so… but I still don’t understand the design… FULL FRAME compact PRIME LENS PRO camera… with a pop-up flash???… and NO EVF???…
I know it’s easier to install the goofy flash but really?…
Get rid of the flash and install an EVF… and Sony can take my money NOW!!!

6 months ago |About the EVF. Sure, its too expensive but according to user reports its the best EVF in the business. And by making it a shoe mounted accessory my take on it is that Sony have given RX1 users real choice and flexibility.
Consider that a fixed EVF would have made the camera larger and would not have delivered the versatility that the shoe mounted tilting EVF does.
The tilt facility adds big time to the stealth factor because it means you can look down into it to compose.
The tilting EVF also compensates for the fixed LCD screen. A tilting LCD would have added bulk.

6 months ago |Tell me one thing.
Does the new RX1 EVF work in all sony cameras that has hot shoe?
Only for RX1? Why?

6 months ago |No comparison in the article to the RX100? Would detract from the RX1? Obviously these boys are greasing the corporate-technology machine that gives them prime gear. I bought the Canon G9 a few years ago after reading their glowing article. They never talked about how obviously bad the lens distortion was .. or the generally horrid lens/image quality. I was really saddled with that damn camera! Shame on you LL!!
