8 months ago |Huge dissapointment for A77 owners. Hopefully some of the features/improvements from the A99 will make it over soon. I still have my A700 for tethered shooting, 7 series sony camera (prosumer) should have tethering!
Andy
8 months ago |Speak for yourself – losing the movie button is a result in my book. Fine, it’s not inherited anything from the a99, but there’s always the possibility of v2.0 adding features (and if you really need the a99′s functionality, there’s a £2,500 solution to that problem).

No change to JPGs, no change to tethering, no change to customization of buttons (besides adding MOVIE – what about ? button? What about enabling focus peaking as an option for customization?)….
Fixes applied are more then welcome, but after all this waiting – one would expect bit more then 2 changes.

8 months ago |I can’t see Sony releasing official support for Linux any time soon, they hold less than 1.5% market share and in what I’m sure it’s well under 0.1% that are photographers with Sony products…
Easy solution, run a Virtual Machine with Windows or OSX.
OSX only have around 8 to 9% market share and it’s lucky Mac has been included but as it’s the photography market it’s a smart move as there is many more Mac users compared with Linux…
Linux can also be a pain in the ass with software at the best of times with the different distributions and dependencies… Sony support will turn into a Linux support help line… hahaha
Until you can get more people over to Linux I would suggest giving up on this topic, I use to run linux years ago and still have a couple systems at work I maintain (servers though, no workstations), Stick with VM for now or use an old 120GB HDD for a Windows boot Drive if you don’t want to dual boot… etc..
Sorry, not trying to sound negative just being realistic, I would much rather Sony spend the time on firmware and development to be honest
Any way hope you find a solution, if not, and if you are located in Brisbane Australia I’ll be more than happy to do the firmware update for you, just let me know…

Greg
8 months ago |They’ve had 7 months to work on the new firmware and this is the best they could do? Disable movie button and more lens support?! C’mon Sony. Really? I have a new theory; they’re intentionally holding back on tethering support for the a77 to boost sales on the a99. Wait for everyone to buy it, THEN give tethering support to those of us who can’t afford to make the jump to the a99. That’s my “Sony is being a douche” theory. My “Sony is being cautious” theory is they are holding off on tethering support for the a77 because they don’t want to showcase it’s capabilities until after the a99 release. If that’s the case, how long do us a77 owners have to wait for tethering??
Chance
8 months ago |Tethering was not an advertised feature for this camera. Firmware updates are for fixes, not features. If they add a feature, that’s just gravy. Otherwise, choose the camera by what it has, not what you hope it will have.
Greg
8 months ago |I understand that it wasn’t an advertised feature. It’s not that I NEED the tethering. If I did, I would’ve chosen a different camera. The other capabilities of the a77 are what sold me on it versus any other camera. It would be NICE to have tethering, though. I’m no super-techno-genius or anything, but I can’t imagine it would be that hard to add tethering since it wouldn’t involve adding hardware. Truth is, I’m quite pleased with the a77 as it is! No matter what camera I would’ve chosen, there would always be something small feature missing; no camera has EVERYTHING. I’m not expecting miracles from Sony, but the consumer base has been asking for this since day 1. here it is, over a year later and it’s still not available. So there are only 3 possible scenarios:
1) Sony CAN’T add tethering due to some sort of software or hardware limitation.
2) Sony WON’T add tethering for reasons they won’t say, despite the overwhelming requests from a77 owners to add it.
3) Sony WILL add tethering, but they want to wait until after the a99 release to either boost it’s sales or get the kinks worked out, if there are any.
Rick
8 months ago |Your third option sounds most logical – in about 6 months once the A99 has been widely available for awhile – if the A77 hardware will even support it.
Greg
8 months ago |It’s the one that makes the most sense. They haven’t had tethering since the alpha x00 series, so it’s possible (more than likely) that they’ve changed the tethering system in some way and need to make sure it works on their new flagship model before releasing it to the previous models. I can only hope I’m right!
Chance
8 months ago |In that Ripley sort of way, “I hope you’re right, I really do.” But in all my years of paying attention to Sony, I’ve rarely seen them do something out the kindness in their hearts, much less what customers may want. When they added peaking and a couple of special effects to 1st gen NEX cameras about a year ago, that just blew me away.
But I think that hoping that there is enough internal memory reserved for Sony to add a bulk feature like tethering, is a stretch. Reserved for more lens profiles and fixes – yes; but not much more than that.
But it’s neither here-nor-there for me, come November 2nd, I’ll finally have tethering in my a99.
Greg
8 months ago |If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s never to buy something on day 1; too many bad experiences in the past personally. Kudos to you, though, and I hope the a99 is everything Sony is promising it to be! I waited about 8 months before I dropped the dough for the a77. Something tells me that in another 8-10 months, I’ll have an a99…
Chance
8 months ago |And that’s sortta my point. I have confidence that whatever isn’t right on Day 1, Sony will eventually fix with a firmware update – or if it’s really bad, I’ll return it. I’m also keeping the faith that Sony will add my 70200G lens to the AF-D profile in the future. But I’m not expecting any more features than what’s on the flyer’s bullet points today.
Madwyn
8 months ago |Well, peak focusing was added as a new feature for NEX-5. Adding new features is not impossible, but they just won’t.
Jonathan
8 months ago |Yes technically you are correct it was not an advertised feature, BUT have you noticed Cannon or Nikon advertising the feature either? It’s expected to be included in this range of camera!
Sony had it in there previous model (A700) so one would just expect it to be included, when do you hear of features being removed in a replacement model? Lets to fair, I personally missed it and is why I’m explaining the above.. I honestly just expected it to have it (but I know for next time with Sony to be sure to check!)
Also Sony UK after release were asked by many people about tether support as many missed the feature was not included like myself… they said they would check with Sony Japan as they also think it’s a needed feature..etc Still too this day no answer (or that I have seen or found any way)
One would also think the most digitally advanced “SLR” camera would support the most basic of digital features and personally I expected further improvement on traditional tethering such as remote viewing, much more control over settings and changes as well as much more innovation … hopefully it’s still coming, I can’t accept that the top of the line APS-C will get support for this basic needed feature…
The A77 is a great studio camera as with very good light the sensor is really amazing and very good quality and would rival just about most options out there right now so it makes more sense than ever before to have tether support but still not… VERY ODD!
Ginello
8 months ago |Well, since there was not tethering on day one, i did not buy it.
Until tethering will not be there, I will pass on the a77.
InColors
8 months ago |Really?! Just a button in my A77?!! Canon still support his 7d after a couple of years of the release and for A77 users just fix a button, very sad firmware
Steve
8 months ago |Then you’ll need to wait another year like the 7D.
Spoon
8 months ago |Umm. If the 7D is your reference, you have to wait another 3 years for a major *software* update. Is that what you’re asking for?
Rick
8 months ago |Canon added features to the grossly outdated 7d to keep it competitive with cameras that have clearly left it behind and to milk every last dollar out of a four year old sensor. With the new APS sensor supposedly coming next year and the 6d, the 7d is an afterthought. I don’t know why anyone would buy one with the other options out there, I’m sure Canon is thinking the same thing.

8 months ago |I’m really disappointed by that update. For what it’s worth I even think now it needs longer to power up, or at least the upper display needs longer to show something.. Really disappointed by that update. I was hoping for af range implementation (I know how unrealistic that sounds, but still the hope dies last) or at least making the jpeg straight out of the camera if not OK, ate least USABLE – fat chance… With the same effect they could’ve completely removed the jpg and raw+jpg from the camera, cause it’s so crappy above ISO 1600, that you just better don’t take the camera out of the bag….
Really disappointed for the time we had to wait for that update – that could’ve been done not in 7 months, not in 7 weeks, but probably within 7 days. So theories how all resources were allocated to the a99 development are more than unrealistic..
Thanks for nothing Sony!
sergei
8 months ago |It’s been confirmed that a77 iso 1600 is iso 2500 on competing D7000 and 7D. a77 jpeg is usable and super easy to fix in lightroom when noise needs to be removed at higher iso. Set noise reduction to high and stop moaning, it works well. Compare the iso performance with 2/3 advantage in mind and you’ll see they are the same.

Rick
8 months ago |Its in the A99. My guess is Sony sees tethering as a pro feature and the A99 is viewed as its only pro camera. Sony rarely does more than one firmware update unless its to address bugs and adding features is not a bug, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

8 months ago |Some people seem to be under the impression that cameras are like phones or tablets and have (relatively) lots of spare program memory to add features. As someone who used to earn a living writing 8 bit computer games in the 80s I know how difficult it can be to add a simple feature when you’re scrabbling around for a few spare bytes to implement it in. More recently I’ve played with “community hacking” of media player firmware and again, when there’s limited program memory you end up having to remove a feature or 2 if you want to fit another one in.

8 months ago |I totally agree. I also use the NEX-7 for HDR. The added AEB range is awesome, but in order to get properly aligned exposures in HDR, the ability to trigger the shutter remotely on a tripod would be key. Hopefully in firmware update 1.02 we’ll be able to trigger autobracketed exposures with the RMTDSLR1.

8 months ago |Hallelujah! Finally a firmware upgrade for the NEX7! Going to download it once I get back from work.
Like some other poster mentioned, I never had any problems with the movie record button, wished they would’ve made it customizable and added a movie mode instead (auto changes to your movie mode “settings”, eg: picture style, white balance, crop ratio when not recording)
And finally 3EV bracketing! Don’t know whos idea to make it 0.7EV -.-
My other wish is for Sony to allow 1/3 ISO increments, I would like to manually set my ISO to 160 or 2000 without having to leave my camera in ISO Auto mode. Never understood why Sony limits the manual ISO gain setting on a prosumer camera

I’m sure they could resolve more in a second update if they wanted, but for now I have a (little) but firm(ware) smile on my face, it feels not that bad any more buying a top-End NEX model and being a Sony dedicated customer.

8 months ago |I use the Sigma 30-1.4 quiet often, a razor sharp lens on the NEX-7. I’ll see if the new firmware will improve the aberration problem on that one now. It’s the only issue I have with that lens. The Tokina 12-24 has no problems, low aberration, low distortion and sharpness of about 98% in all corners. I will give the Tokina 11-16 a try soon as well. Big lenses but some that make the NEX an excellent tool. As a smaller option I shoot the Minolta 28-2.8, that lens is a jewel anyway.
Juan
8 months ago |98% wow! You should have supepowered-eyes to see a 2% difference of sharpness.
Rick
8 months ago |I found a bug in the new 1.06 firmware for the A77. I have a Tamron 18-270 PZD that I generally use the most and after flashing the new firmware, it reset everything so I had to go in and set up all my old setting from scratch.
I had the camera auto-focus switch on the front of the camera turned OFF and the lens switch still ON and the lens still auto-focuses. The little green boxes where all the sensors are were lighting up too so it may be that with the lens switch on and the camera knob off, it’s back feeding or something to energize the phase detection sensors. Otherwise, the lens should not be able to auto-focus like that. It was just as fast too. Weird huh?
Sergei
8 months ago |NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL AUTOFOCUS. Holy Smokes Guys!!! Am I seeing thing or does a77 really hits the spot in autofocus department now.
I tried and tested 16-50mm, CZ 24-70mm, Sony 50mm F1.4, CZ 85mm F1.4, CZ 135mm F1.4, Sony 70-200 and all lenses NAIL the focus amazingly fast, Very accurate and decisive. All lenses tested at their widest apertures and a little stopped down. I am impressed, thank you Sony. A very recommended update.
I also noticed improved EVF performance in low light with very little grain, especially with fast glass.
And the movie button of course.
P.S. I did NOT have to calibrate any lenses, that were calibrated before.
What are your impressions, Folks?
shamb
8 months ago |@Rick
I dont think this is a bug. The Sony DT50 f1.8 does this on my A77, and it also did this prior to firmware upgrade – the AF/MF on the lens has priority.
KZ
8 months ago |what are you talking about? Why should AF and EVF be better with the new firmware? Sony doesn’t mention any changes in these areas.

Todd
5 months ago |My 70-200 still hunts like crazy especially in low light. They need to improve the low light capability and noise at high iso. I shoot live music and ballet where a high shutter speed is needed which means high iso. I’ve noticed that with canon and nikon, the noise is much lower in the 3200 and up range. C’mon sony, you got us, do you want to keep us?
Juan
8 months ago |I’ve updated release 1.1 for the NEX-7 and after trying it with the Sigma 19mm I can say that there is no noticiable improvements, only deactivation of movie record button.

8 months ago |Before I pull out my Samyang E-mount 8mm fisheye, maybe somebody can tell me if the corners are better?
Todd
5 months ago |How about lower noise at 3200iso and up? Nikon and Canon are blowing away Sony at these settings. Yes, I use them as I shoot performance for live music and ballet. To get the shutter speed high iso is needed to stop action especially in ballet where they want crisp images.
Another nice treat would be to have the focus points show up in white with the active in orange just like on the 65, 57, 37, etc. Why did they leave this feature out of a “pro/ semi-pro” camera? It makes selecting the focus point in the dark very difficult. C’mon Sony! Give features that are usable for serious shooters. You want the pro’s? Build a camera that satisfies them… and not just the 4 or 5 you already have that shoot mostly in the daylight.
