Hot! New Sony E-mount roadmap.

Dear Japanese readers! We really need your help on this! The image on top shows the new Sony E-mount roadmap info that has been just posted by Sony Japan. It says that from now on we can expect Sony to release a minimum of five new E-mount lenses every year. And this year one Zeiss and one G lens will come too. By the way, let’s not forget that three “extra” Zeiss primes designed for Sony E-mount and Fuji X mount will come too!
And yes, there is no sign at all of a possible A-mount roadmap
Thanks all the super fast and gentle SAR readers that helped me to translate this!

Jonas
4 months ago |There are parts in my body that have enough substance for you and your friends.
Dimitri
4 months ago |klw10: I fully agree with you. The absence of the substance is the main problem of SONY’s plans! Can you imagine an A 580 with an 5N sensor? The answer is NO, because the “old fashion” mirror is more expensive than the translucent crap! Can you imagine an A mount mirrorless? The answer is NO, because portability is more important than control buttons! Can you imagine RX-100 with a 12 mp sensor? The answer is NO, because SONY is interesting about the idiot pixel hunter!
Spoon
4 months ago |Say what? The A580 and 5N share the same sensor. The main difference is the thickness of the AA filter (NEX cameras require a lighter one to minimize corner issues due to short flange distance).

LOL! don’t forget to mention the 300 shot battery life….
Like the alpha bodies, I also prefer bigger glass.
E-Mounts lenses are tiny and like most tiny lens manufacturer, there exist challenges for Sony in keeping things precise…
Some of the lenses in the A-Mount lineup is Godly, it is good that Nex has adapters.

Rurik
4 months ago |Hm… strange. 5+ lens in 2013?
2 lenses announced (20, 18-200). Or are they counted in this “5+”?
3 Zeiss primes.
1 Zeiss premium zoom rumored (16-80 version for E-mount??)
What could be from G? 16-50 F2.8 for E-mount?
That’s it for 2013?
ingo
4 months ago |“That’s it for 2013?”
Not enough?
Rurik
4 months ago |Oh, please take it as a question. Really. Nothing like “give more!!!” or something. Just a try to conclude the info.
In fact I’m even not an E-mount user at all and not planning.
spaceman
4 months ago |What three Zeiss Primes?
No Sony Zeiss primes have even been rumored for the NEX.
If you mean the announced Zeiss E-mount 14, 32 and 50Macro from Zeiss then they do not count in the Sony roadmap, as they are not Zeiss by Sony lenses.
Rurik
4 months ago |Yes, I meant those 3.
And I guess, you’re right, those should not be included in Sony’s roadmap. So there will be something more this year.
Joel Richards
4 months ago |Should not, maybe. but do we know they are not?
Kursad Sezgin
4 months ago |As expected, there’s no A-mount roadmap. I suspect that A99 will be the last FF a-mount that sony produced
Hellven
4 months ago |the last FF?? they said the same about the A900… and the A850… and now the A99…
Rurik
4 months ago |Come on, there was nothing like this after A900.
I’d say A900 was the golden age of A-mount. Very good FF camera, very competitive to 5D m2 and D700. Very good lens set for all basic needs. A lot of expectation for new cameras: A800, A850, A920, A950…
And then… something was broken around 2010-2011.
Sky_walker
4 months ago |I can tell you what broke: Sony stopped listening to the customers and started the “greed” campaign.
WTH

They were so close with the A900/850.
Cheaper FF cameras that takes brilliant shots.

John Maverick
4 months ago |ZA 50/1.4 has already been pulled due to lack of interest.
Rurik
4 months ago |OMG. Are you sure. Where you got the info?
Carl
4 months ago |He’s just playing with you.
But it’s true Sony really screwed up getting that lens to market. It should have been part of the initial tranche of ZA lenses released along side the A900. Fair enough, it wasn’t, but they had a second chance to release it along side the A99 with four years to get their stuff together, but they still couldn’t get it ready in time, so here we are four months later without even an announcement of when its announcement is going to be.
Seeky
4 months ago |I initially thought all A-mount lens designers are now very busy in the E-mount lab, but then I realized that since the launch of the NEX system there have been released 7 newly designed A-mount lenses. Not all of them are spectacular, as there are still many omissions, but regarding APS-C lenses most bases are covered.
However, E-mount gets more attention since it already got 11 lenses (counting the 18-200 trio as 1, ignoring the converters). I will consider this when spending my money, but I’m not so hysteric as some folks preaching doomsday for A-mount.
Frank
4 months ago |The new A-mount lenses are RUMOURS, welcome rumours of course, but let’s see them on a roadmap. Seeing is believing…
Rurik
4 months ago |No lens – No picture.
Hope I’m wrong. But there was one unnoticed signal recently from Sigma.
Sigma made 3 new lenses for E-mount, and one for Canikon but not for A-mount. I suspect Sigma has some insider info why not to even copy existing lens to A-mount.
But still hope it’s not the case yet and they’ll revive A-mount DSLR’s. Just a little hope…

4 months ago |Admin – do you ever get any indication from your sources that Sony reads SAR comments?
I wonder if Sony knows of the great wish for some sort of public commitment to the a-mount. It wouldn’t cost them much to make (unless of course they aren’t committed…). Such an announcement might tempt someone to stay or upgrade into the a mount system (imagine – someone might even buy a 500/4 with some certainty it will have continuing support!)
Personally, I’m not buying any more a moubt stuff at the moment!

If canon or Nikon produced an evf/ SLT, I could switch in a flash but I just love my evf.
Maybe the way forward is for this rumoured a/e hybrid. As long as the AF can match or beat my a99, I’ll be happy. I hope my a99 doesn’t break down!

4 months ago |Agreed. NEX cameras are interesting, especially for enthousiasts and pro’s looking for a travel-kit. But unless a full-frame NEX with weather sealing and fast multi-point autofocus shows up, I can’t see anyone ditching the Alpha system.
Frank
4 months ago |But, Sony can start making E-mount bodies with an A-mount adapter. Just like they have ditched the iISO mount and forced an adapter onto A99 and soon A3x/A5x/A7x users.
spaceman
4 months ago |Who says A-mount is dying?
Last time a checked an army of A-mount lenses are available, and this year a new Zeiss is coming, apart from the upgradede G-lenses.
Why don’t you just list the lenses you want to buy, instead of starting some kind of rumor by crying out about the immediate death of the A-mount.
Emir
4 months ago |Frank: one of the reasons I use a DSLR/SLT is for the feeling I have when I shoot with such a camera. If I wanted a compact, I’d get a TX10 or something…
Spaceman: yes an army of lenses is available, but that doesn’t mean that there should be no development & advertisement. I cant remember when I’ve seen Sony market the Alpha series. And speaking of armys… Sonys lens army is way smaller than CaNikons…
Frank
4 months ago |You are missing the point. You put an E-mount on a SLR sized body with an adapter for “legacy” A-mount lenses.
Sony have already ditched the iISO flash mount and forced A99 users to use an adapter, clearly they don’t care about existing users, so I see no reason why they can’t ditch A-mount too.
Sony are only interested in NEW camera sales figures. Us lot on A-mount don’t make enough cash for them is my guess.
Klaus
4 months ago |Another indication that A-Mount will be dead soon. Good – they have more resources to concentrate on E-Mount, then.
Verb
4 months ago |I’d be happy with better production on the released E-mount lenses. It doesn’t help to have a great lineup of lenses if none of them are actually available to buy.
ArtoS
4 months ago |Alpha is not dying anywhere, new lenses are coming…Tamron just made new 70-200/2.8 SSM for Sony-A and you can now pre-order in Europe new Sigma 35/1.4 SSM for Sony-A. New Zeiss 50/1.4 is pre-published and SAR is telling that 70-200 II and 70-400 II are coming
There are plenty of very good lenses for Sony-A already. Why not buy them and take photos! Thre are already adaptors for Sony-A to Nex…no problem in future!
As far as I can remember there has not been any Sony-A or Minolta-A roadmaps. Lenses are coming and going.

Frank
4 months ago |However the released lenses aren’t Sony and have been in development for a long time. The rumoured Sony ones aren’t exactly being rushed to market, are they?
ArtoS
4 months ago |New Sony-A lenses during past two-three years
Zeiss 24/2 SSM (very good)
16-50/2.8 DT SSM (had that with A77, very good indeed)
18-135 DT SAM
55-300 DT SAM
300/2.8 G II (I am very satisfied to new 300/2.8 II, ultra fast and accurate AF with A99!)
I agree that no rush and some lenses should be restyled to SSM.
Personally waiting mainly new SAL 70-200/2.8 II because of weather sealing and new AF/coating.
Frank
4 months ago |You are looking behind, I am looking forward.
From THIS year, if the rumours are to be believed, there appears to have been some change of direction within Sony Imaging. What Sony and third parties have released and promised to release up to THIS point is irrelevant.
2014 is going to be the year that they either commit to A-mount bodies or ditch the system in favour of E-mount and adapters.
ArtoS

4 months ago |When buying into a system, it may be wise to consider the future of it.

4 months ago |I agree with this, there seems to be no direction at all to the A-mount and IMO the Minolta holdover lenses are in serious need of a refresh. I spent a lot of time shooting with a friends A99 and I really like it, but looking at focus on E-mount I just couldn’t pull the trigger. I don’t want to get stuck with a camera that has no support. Outside of a couple few really good Zeiss lenses, the rest of the A-mount lineup is underwhelming.
Carl
4 months ago |Though to be fair, those old Minolta lenses have aged very gracefully indeed when you consider they are over 25 years old. The few remaining unupdated Canon and Nikon lenses from the beginning of their AF system aren’t especially good.
Colin
4 months ago |There hasn’t been a Sony A-mount lens roadmap in graphical form, but there is precedent for Sony making announcements about planned/concept lenses. Take a look at this old press release for example:

4 months ago |Intel is also releasing new Itanium processors each 1-2 years, despite the fact that the platform has been dead for about 10 years already.

Likewise, Tamron probably has to release certain lenses for the A-mount.

spaceman
4 months ago |I understand it would be nice with an A-mount roadmap, but have Canon or Nikon released an official roadmap for their lenses, then why is Sony A dying when they are not releasing an official roadmap for an already established system?
5+ E-mount lenses is great news. I hope we will see relative high performance married with reasonable price.
The 20mm is one of the at least 5 lenses for 2013 according to the roadmaps (the PZ18200 is on the roadmap but included in the 2012 releases).
So 2013 would look like this perhaps?
1. SEL 20/2.8 (announced snap pancake)
2. SEL 85/1.8 (rumored middle telephoto)
3. Zeiss 16-18/3.5-4.5 (rumored)
4. G 16-50/2.8 (high performance standard zoom)
5. SEL 18-135/3.5-5.6 (mid magn zoom)
6. ???

4 months ago |The obvious answer is that there is no doubt, and had never been any doubt, about Canon and Nikon being committed to their systems. They and third-parties are constantly releasing bodies, lenses and accessories.
It is demonstrable that Canon and Nikon are committed to their system, a roadmap isn’t necessary for a system that already has an abundance of support from its manufacturer.

4 months ago |To all the doomsayers of the A-Mount,
Don’t worry about the future of the A-mount going away. Not going to happen.
The conversation here seems to be forgetting that Sony released its most expensive, state-of-the-art lens that it has ever released, only a few months back. The 500 f4 G SSM. A lens the the Sports and Wildlife/Narure market had been screaming for. That lens I think tells you all you need to know about Sony’s commitment to the Pro market and the A-Mount line-up. An insane amount of R&D went into that lens in bringing it to the market to compete head to head with Canon & Nikon’s best. And the word is, it’s pretty spectacular. The A99 is getting great feedback and reviews. The lenses will continue to come.

The Zeiss SEL24 has amazing RAW files, with minimal distortion, color aberration and vignetting…
Actually all the E-primes accept the SEL16 have good aberration properties.
A-mount is here to stay…not sure though how long Sony will do the DT lenses.

4 months ago |Oh no, will they produce five more pieces of 18-200mm? With a small different function or alteration and fill up the road map? Maybe one with a meter, one more piece with a aperture ring, one put a G behind due to changes in some element, one for fullframe and one with a silent fast motor SSM. Wow five more new lenses but all 18-200mm just to put more lenses on this roadmap!
Ian Scovell
4 months ago |There seems to be ‘a lot’ of hate here for the A-mount & concern that it will be discontinued.
‘if’ Sony are going to release a full frame NEX, why would they develop another lens mount & all the shutzpa that entails, when they already have a full frame camera mount?
From a sales perspective, would it not be better to have a Full Frame NEX body & immediately be able to tap into any legacy lenses?
Otherwise, your in effect launching a brand new camera system & trying to support it with separate set of FF lenses, which as we know (lens production) seems to be an issue with Sony. To launch a camera like that is going to struggle in the market place because you asking people to invest from scratch, wether they be an existing Alpha/NEX or from another system.
The only area of concern would be flange distance which needs to be set as per the current NEX range to allow use of APS-C format NEX lenses in a DX crop mode (why anyone would want to is beyond me). This then allows for the introduction of some form of spacer/adapter to allow the use of existing Alpha/minolta lenses.
If you look at it from a marketing perspective, Sony would be quite simply ‘nuts’ to deliver a product to market which didn’t tie in with their existing products.
The Alpha lens line is therefore safe, but I think, for the time being there is a complete freeze on new Alpha lenses until its decided how it will tie in with this new product.
Frank
4 months ago |They already have a full frame E-mount, the NEX-VG900. The LA-EA3 adapter is used to attach full frame A-mount lenses (no AF).
It makes sense for Sony to swap to the E-mount on their SLR sized bodies and use a new AF adapter to attach full frame A-mount lenses to it that provides AF like the LA-EA2 does on NEX compacts.
OneTrackMind
4 months ago |@Frank…I’ve been saying something very similar to you on this topic. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if the future of Sony’s A3X,A5x,A7x,A9x etc are actually native E-mounts. Maybe some of the less expensive bodies like the A3x/A5x disappear in favor of the current NEX lineup of products, and the A7x,A9x, and higher maintain the larger Alpha sized chassis but with native e-mount (maybe alpha adapter is included with purchase?)
If during the next product cycle when they update the A99 (which might be Fall 2014), it has a similar form factor to the current A99, but mirrorless with e-mount and I could use my existing A-mount glass with fast AF, etc. then that’s not a bad thing. I think people are forgetting that with the new infusion of powered adapters (which will only get better with time), almost any Canikon lens would be available to them. You wouldn’t need Sony to be pumping out new glass every year.
I think the biggest technology improvement needs to be from these adapters. If they can get the tech to the point where there’s full control, fast AF, etc, then nobody will care if it’s E-mount. To me, Sony makes great sensors, and I love their ergonomics, so focus on that and leave the glass to somebody else.

(granted they’re getting outdated) Also lets face it…It’s already fairly clear they’re not going to gain significant ground in the Pro-SLR space unless they invent something completely new.
Sony has an opportunity to establish themselves as the Canon or Nikon in the mirrorless market. If they don’t focus on the mirrorless APS-C segment now, they’re only solid money maker might as well just be the cybershot cameras.
There’s more opportunity for them to make money in the mirrorless space and it makes sense they’re hitting it hard. Once they establish

What about ripping all the video features from the A99…
Rename it to the A95 and sell it for $1600 USD?
heheehe!

4 months ago |I wondering why Sony is releasing so many 18-200 superzooms. I guess it’s a bit late for me to care now that I’ve acquired the 18200LE. The new version might be interesting if the powerzoom means that the lens is more compact

4 months ago |My experience shooting Sony products is good now. I have happy clients now. Are there trade offs in shooting Sony products? Sure. Can I get great results with Sony products? Sure. Do I care at all about Nikon and Canon? No. Why do people talk about them so much this is a Sony forum. I want to shoot with an EVF camera outdoors and with theatre. I use an OVF in studio or an a77 too. Do I welcome any camera or lense improvements? Sure. My point is that there is joy in shooting any photography. I shot a large choir concert for a school district last night. I did the video with an RX100, and stills with a Nex 6 with a Rokinon 8mm fisheye or Sigma 19mm, a a57 with the 16-50 SSM and a a77 with a 70-200 SSM. I got everything I wanted going inbetween three setups. The director was thrilled with the results. Do clients ask me about equipment? Rarely or never. All that matters is the output and how easy it is to work with me. The lighting on the stage was terrible between rows of singers or soloists. I love the a77 EVF to get the exposure right and fast. So thanks to all those engineers who dream this stuff up and make it alll possible. I waited a year for the Nex6 and I will wait a little longer for an a99. I enjoy it all point and shoot, Nex, SLT and FF (a850). I smile because the future will only be better.

4 months ago |Wow, so glad I didn’t switch from Canon to Sony Alpha mount 5 years ago. I wisely chose to switch to Nikon, and they’ve rewarded me with so many new and excellent lens releases. On top of that, Zeiss has released so many excellent F mount lenses that I would never see in A mount.
I’m also feeling good that I chose NEX over m43. When chosing a camera system, you need to be prudent and go with the winner. The writing has been on the wall for years for A mount. The new reality is Sony has finally come to their senses and looked up to read those writings. A mount is as dead as regular 43 mount. Sony cant survive by just satisfying the needs of legacy A mount owners. It’s time to read the writings yourself and move on. It’s a pity about your investment, but chalk it up as a financial lesson.

Me, the latter.

4 months ago |The question is just how many 30mm lenses does NEX need? A camera that’s clearly limited to the wide angle range of lenses in order to keep lens size down. It’s not that they might release lenses, it’s if they will ever expand the range of the system outside it’s current range? So far, very unlikely.

4 months ago |Sounds like a similar approach Canon and Nikon took with APS-C. Come out with a few lens to satisfy the standard zoom, wide and normal lenses and then force APS-C owners to rely on larger FF lenses for the longer/faster lenses.
Looks like Sony, Nikon and Canon will do the same with their mirrorless line, except now you also need to purchase an adaptor for FF lens support.
M43 doesn’t have the FF heritage to protect so we will see these lenses from them with the 150mm F2.8 already coming later this year.

4 months ago |You haven’t researched this have you, Walt?
How do you explain the 18-200mm, 55-210mm, 50/1.8, the rumoured 85/1.8. Hardly limited to wide angle.
I own the 55-210mm – it’s not particularly big or heavy. It’s long-ish, but that comes with the territory.

4 months ago |an E-mount 16-80 f2.8 G lens would be drool-tastic. I would hardly ever leave my nex-7 and means i can put my 18-55 permanently on my nex3
Throw in a 70-300 G and i`ll be really happy

It would also be enormous. Not gonna happen.
