“Are you listening Canon and Nikon?“. That’s how Photozone starts the conclusion after reviewing the Zeiss ZA Planar T* 85mm f/1.4. I have nothing to add. Every Sony guy here knows that this is a lens to buy. Read the review (Click here) and than order the lens at Amazon or Adorama or any other store you like

2 years ago |I would’ve been nice to see this lens compared face to face with the Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S NIKKOR and the Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II USM

2 years ago |I think it’s going to take a lot more than one lens to make anyone shooting Canon and Nikon jealous of someone shooting Sony, so much more to be jealous of Canon and Nikon shooters compared to Sony.
Find myself more and more each day thinking about jumping over to Nikon and this lens does not keep me from thinking about it.

2 years ago |Perhaps Canon and Nikon users may feel jealous because of this lens but we, Alpha users, have felt jealous hundreds of times when we see the release of high quality semi-pro and pro bodies such as EOS 7D, D90, D7000, D300, 5D Mark II, and so on.

2 years ago |That’s right. Lens might be the best investment for a photographer, but its not going to pay off if there is no top of the line camera attached. I would feel nauseous attaching this lens to a A350 or like.

2 years ago |sony has other great lenses also
135mm zeiss
135mm STF
70-400mm
to name a few

2 years ago |good to hear, very promising, the legendary canon 85 1.2L also has very good corner to corner sharpness even wide open.
i think the zeiss 85mm might be my next lens. unless of course the new sigma 85mm is crazy good like their 50 1.4.

2 years ago |I’ve tested the SAL-85F14Z twice and I must say that it is a true pleasure to use. It is definitely going to be next purchase and anyone who wishes to have great portraits for both professional and consumer use i.e. taking family pictures should strongly consider this lens. It is a must for every photography lover and ALPHA user.

2 years ago |I found 135mm Zeiss much more superior.
Would like to see (in comparison) tiny Sony 85mm f2.8 test results.
Any way lenses is much more important than cameras.

2 years ago |I have this lens and it’s really a must for an alpha user to see what his camera is capable of. However with my a850, I prefer the 135 zeiss and it’s far better optically than this one even wide open. Plus it’s the fastest in its range.

2 years ago |Hmm.. I’ll take these discussion into account.. I’m trying to decide between the 85 and 135 once I get the cash. The issue with the 135 is if you multiply it by 1.5, it’s pretty far -_-
Tristan
2 years ago |I love 135ZA as well, and took it.
From IQ perspective, 85ZA is far more better than N/C expensive one.
But SONY need to upgrade the mechanical design: SSM\IF, maybe also 1 ED glass (not MD issue)…

2 years ago |To have both the 85 and 135 ZA’s in the stable is like a godsend for portrait shooters on top of the minolta 85mm variations and the 100/2.
Throw in image stability, and wireless HighSpeedSync fresh out of the box and you have some remarkable abilities.

2 years ago |Maybe for most people AF isn’t that important but I expect full time manual focus override in that price range.

2 years ago |no doubt it might be a marvellous lens, but how is it going to make Nikon or Canon shooters jealous? There hasn’t been a side by side comparison of all three lenses. And both the Nikon and Canon have been highly applauded. Canon shares the same slow focusing with the Sony due to heavy lenses. Only the Nikon seems to have a fast AF suitable for being used in indoor sports photography.
Yes great for Sony shooters! But it’s nothing the others didn’t have for years…

2 years ago |the review is great, the lens is great, but the conculsion is funny. I’m jealous of a Canon 7D..
Calxn
2 years ago |This is THE lens to get? Really? Um, look into 100mm makro-planar. Comes in both zf and ze mount. Not yet available for Sony. Funny, zeiss 85mm is good but not even one of their top two 35mm lenses. They currently make those (100mm and 21mm) for non-Sony.
Panfruit
2 years ago |It’s manual-focus-only AND only goes to 1:2. If it doesn’t go to 1:1, then I say don’t put a macro label on it.
Also the ZF and ZE lenses are different from their ZA counterparts (those that have ZA counterparts). Notice the superiority of the ZA 85mm to the manual-only ones.

2 years ago |I’ve used this lens since it came out, and I gotta say, it’s pretty much the best lens I’ve ever used. Throw it on a A900 and it doesn’t get any better than that.
With the adapter you can throw this on the VG10 or the NEX5 and shoot full HD video as well. Looks awesome!
(Not sure how many people on here realize that Sony has been making the image sensors for companies like Nikon for years. So, there’s plenty to be jealous of)
fido
2 years ago |no canikon photographer is going to be jealous.. they have their own dslr-system,also with great 85mm lenses..
it is not about just one lens, it is all about a complete system..
i come from minolta, so my choice for sony wasn´t that difficult..
btw, i don´t buy lenses to make other photographers jealous, but to do my own thing..

2 years ago |yeah like buying cameras to make people jelous is stupid, but at the same time I don’t use canon because it seems like everyone uses canon but a 1d mk4 seems like the way to go, is there something wrong with me? whatever, I have the 85 and 135 ZA my expereince is that the 85 has CA wide open and the 135 does not, I find myself running around with the 85 more just because of the size and wieght (135/1.8 is a beast) but stick the 135 on your camera and put the hood on there and its like owning a brand new super duty truck and getting it lifted with some giant tires
