I think I specifically left out the OM-D from that statement. My experience of other M4/3rds cameras—many of which share the same 12mp sensors, and thus do not vary hugely in quality—has been poor. Those sensors, again not the 16mp OM-D one, have fairly high noise visible at base ISO, and poor dynamic range. It [...]

Sky_walker: Both Nikon and Canon are leaders w/ camera bodies. It may be true that the A77 is at least as good as its counterparts, but I personally judge on the entirety of the line-up, including the full-frame cameras. In this regard, Sony doesn’t really even have a product (the A900 is long due for [...]

Sony has always been inferior to Nikon and Canon in the DSLR market. They are just catching up with their camera bodies, so it’s now more a matter of whether you prefer EVFs to OVFs. In terms of lenses, there are a few excellent ones, but by and large they cannot compare with CaNikon. With [...]

Sloaah commented on the blog post A full NEX-F3 and A37 and lens rumor roundup! 3 weeks ago · View
Not only is the 18-200 nothing new, it’s not even being announced yet (TBA Summer). To me that implies that this will probably be the only summer released NEX lens. 1/2 year gone and Sony has yet to expand their E mount line-up, despite describing that as a priority. We really need a 16-50/2.8, wide-angle [...]

From the product lineup image, it seems strongly implied that Sony will release a camera between the NEX 7 and 5n. It’s subtitled “Strengthen Middle/High range line up”, while the 5n is shown as being at the very bottom of the “Hobby” section.

Colour matched as in they produce images with the same warmth and colour tonality, so that when you cut between scenes shot with either lens, you don’t get a distracting change in the look of the image. T-stop rating is done for the same reason, so that exposure is absolutely constant. But this doesn’t affect [...]

The issue wouldn’t affect the D800. It’s to do with the short flange distance, which leads to the light hitting the sensor in the corners at a very shallow angle. Offset micro lenses are needed, but clearly the Nex 7 doesn’t have these (or at least they aren’t offset enough, vs the 5n). It’s been [...]

Because parallax error isn’t a very big problem. Having an OVF can be quite important to connecting with the subject and forgetting about the camera.

I can understand that 24p isn’t enough for most people (somewhat disappointing, should at least have 30p for NTSC crowds). However, you also seem to be reflecting the author of the comparison that the codec isn’t good enough either – that Sony has a far more “advanced” codec. This is a common misconception – H.264 and [...]

Anatole Sloan commented on the blog post Nikon D4 analysis (Sony sensor?) 4 months, 2 weeks ago · View
Probably NOT made by Sony ; or if so, then they will have been an entirely Nikon design that no-one else will get to use. Nikon fabricated it’s D3 and D3s sensors, as well as the D700. That’s its territory: low megapixel FX sensors. (thus their competitive advantage with high-iso). They have started doing the same with [...]

Only possible if camera has no mirror due to the tiny flange distance of E lenses (18mm); in which case you might as well have a separate alpha adaptor like the lea2 with pellicle mirror. If the mirror flaps up so that the E lenses were actually recessed within the camera… it would make the [...]

I do have to say that the 50mm FoV on aps-c cameras is pretty useless. It’s just the traditionally cheap lens and one that is ingrained in photographic culture.
35mm (50mm equiv.) would be much more useful. 24mm (35mm equiv.) is frankly the best, the Zeiss will be awesome

How can nobody understand the phrase Trojan horse??? Everybody appears to be thinking it comes from the term computer trojans, which is truly shocking given the cultural and literary importance of Homer’s Iliad… This has to be one of the most famous stories of all history. Anyway am looking forward to this very much, but hope they [...]
