This was NOT something the Sony stores got wrong; it represented a change in corporate policy to acknowledge that the A900 was de facto a professional camera, and used as such by professional photographers, AND to signal that Sony is now prepared to enter the professional market. I think we’ll see some seriously professional Sony [...]

True; that’s a major factor. But there has been another change: a change in management, accompanied by an announced changed in direction for Sony, that will focus more effort on the imaging division, including specifically Alpha, and that will put greater emphasis on getting products to market faster, including specifically lenses. Given these two factors, [...]

It’s not Sony vs Canikon. It’s Sony and Nikon vs Canon. My biggest problems with Sony in the last six years have been 1) the very cautious corporate strategy, especially after the financial collapse in 2008, and 2) the failure to put an emphasis on imaging. Howard Stringer spearheaded a much-needed effort to restructure the [...]

I don’t know whether the new Sony FF cameras will be better than the Canikon models, but I do believe that at least one of them will be released in 2012. And this time it will not be a shot across the bow in the manner of the A900, to put Canikon shooters on notice [...]

I suspect that you are right. Sony seems to have seriously closed the gap on the tsunami / earthquake / meltdown / flood-related production problems that had gotten them behind the eight ball. And the new Sony CEO has signaled a shift toward focusing n imaging. I think the shift will happen rapidly.

yes, but all in televisions and chemicals; 10,000 out of 166,000 jobs. So far, indications are that Sony will focus on imaging, as well as gaming & mobile. I expect the investment in the Alpha division to increase, and the speed with which lenses, for example, are introduced to increase.

This camera is for sports and wildlife, and so needs to be fast. Have you noticed how slow the D800 is, in terms of fps?

I don’t believe these are prototypes that are being tested, but rather pre-production copies. They had better get this baby out this fall!

Dulaney Ward commented on the blog post Nikon D800 with Sony’s 36 Megapixel sensor announced! 3 months, 2 weeks ago · View
Actually, this is the same thing that Nikon always said about Sony’s 24-mpx sensor in the D3x. I would be very surprised, however, if Sony were to wait a full year to reply to this camera with their own camer with the same sensor–unless they are convinc3ed that they can turn the tables this time [...]

Other than this reviewer’s suggestion that the crop is due to stabilization (which is mechanical, not electronic), what reason do you have to think that the in-body stabilization is the reason for the crop? After all, he says that Canon, though they don’t crop, nevertheless similarly soea not use the full size of the sensor, [...]

Dulaney Ward commented on the blog post Sony Interview: The future is mirrorless! 4 months ago · View
Nothing in the actual interview of Sony’s Mark Weir says that mirrorless is the future. Instead, Weir says that traditional dslrs and optical viewfinders are NOT the future. This leaves room for both slts and NEX cameras in Sony’s future, probably little or no room for optical viewfinders. Nor does Weir imply that there is [...]

Words are always changing, slipping and sliding, in every way–in meaning, in form, in pronunciation, in use, in connotation. And dictionaries are merely attempts to define how words are used–not how they have to be used. Language is and always has been dynamic. You cannot pin it down, not even the French Academy, which, a [...]

Dulaney Ward commented on the blog post NEX-7 versus Fuji X PRO 1 (UPDATE: Fuji cheated on price?) 4 months, 1 week ago · View
I don;t know how one can properly compare a camera that has had lengthy reviews doe by top pros with a camera for which we do not even have adequate specs. Some thoughts, however: It looks to me like Fuji is very serious here, having seen an opening in the new field of mirrorless compacts, [...]
