You can see that camera got both: Mic input and headphones output! Thing people been REALLY waiting for!!!!
If I’m not mistaken – on a shot from top we ALSO SEE BUILD-IN FLASH UNIT.
I’m sure some people will find both of these a really good news!
No? Then how do you explain the “thing” on top shot, between mic and hotshoe? For me it looks like a small pop-up flash (enough to trigger wireless flashes).
button looks like customizable one – if you don’t use build-in flash then you can assign anything you’d like to it (eg. make it a RAW button like it’s in Pentax). That’s good, isn’t it?
At least – that’s what I see on the images.
Yes, I agree, those lines between the hot shoe and the mics could well house a tiny flash (for wireless), and you could open it just but pressing it down, no need for a button… but this is just pure speculation.
Yea… that’s kinda weird. I wonder what happen to SLT’s speed advantage? When first rumors about A99 came out, including the 24 MPx sensor I thought it’s gonna be a game-changer with something like 16 FPS shooting… but it seems like that’s not the case.
Dulany, it’s only 8fps in Priority AE mode. Full control of aperture you only get 6FFS with the A99. Another area I said that wouldn’t perform as well as the A77.

Not disappointing to me actually, I find the FPS craze a bit weird to be honest. I hate sifting through more than 200 photos on a shoot and if I used high frame rates half the time that could well be over 1000 shots per event.
That said, buyers seem fascinated with the biggest and the fastest whatever in general (mostly for bragging rights, not practical use), and it will help sell bodies for Sony.
Yep, Carl, that was my point – building “the best” camera in terms of FPS would be natural, and at the same time a great option. Only thing to do then would be proper buffer (minimum 2 sec) and I’m sure many people would buy it only for this one reason.
Actually I’m fine with 10fps (of course 16fps would be great) but I really hope that it has got a large buffer which allows a burst of ~5 seconds. Also the camera should be able to take full advantage of 95MB/s SD-cards. If the camera writes at both cards simultaneously this would be nearly 200MB/s = 7.5fps infinite RAW burst.
Well that’s a bit disappointing. Do you know anything about the writing speed or benefits of the dual slot design? At least 6fps infinite RAW burst should be possible…
6fps is way enough for 99% of people. I really don’t see the reason to complain about this. And by the way, which faster camera can you buy in the same price league?
Ehm a used 1D Mark iv … I really waited for the a99 but only 10fps in crop mode, maybe even only JPEG crop mode, when the a77 can do 12fps(Same image size), yah maybe the buffer would be Full Too fast , but i would like to have the Option on a pro Dslt and Decide when and whether to use it, but thats just holding back Features. In One or two years they will release a pro slt with 4k vid and 12-14 fps.
Not really- you won’t have any compatibility with 3rd party lenses aside from releasing them full power in default mode, and you won’t have any compatibility with current flashes unless you use adapter. This means that your camera will support exactly ONE flash.
I don’t think that having a system camera with 1 flash is good in any way.
There’s a lot of cheering going on over at DPR for the “superior industrial design” of this camera. I so think it looks very self-assured and purposeful, which I like very much.
With this, the NEX cameras, and the new FF compact camera, it looks to me like Sony is all-in, and pretty much has Photokina to itself. Nothing from Nikon except a cheapo FF (probably an older 24-mpx design), and maybe no EOS camera from Canon, though chance of their cheapo FF.

Firstly, this is not an exlusively “pro” camera. It will be aimed mostly at the enthusiast. As such, there will be informal social moments when you simply won’t have an external flash to hand or, just as likely, not got the time to fish it out. However, if we even leave this aside, there are two circumstances when having a built-in flash is very useful for photographer. Firstly, it can be all that’s required for a bit of fill-in flash, saving a lot of time rooting around for that external unit. However, the main reason is that the on-board flash is great for wireless flash triggering. That saves you carrying around an external flash just for the purpose of triggering some slaves.
Of course the adoption of the ISO shoes might well point the way to other wireless flash solutions, but an on-board flash would, in no way, diminish the camera and it would have been extremely useful to those of us who use the on-board flash for just such purposes.
Just because you don’t see a need for an on-board unit, does not mean that others don’t either.

Exactly, your post includes all the arguments I thought of. Maybe the flash is really between hot shoe and mic and it is just that small because it uses high power LEDs? (thinking of anything to support my hopes)
The problem with a small pop-up flash is not that it is not powerful enough, but that it is too close to the optical axis, causing the dreaded red eye effect on portraits.
It would need some weird mechanism, like the jack-in-the-box flash of the NEX-7, to make it rise high enough.
+2
I will mainly use the camera for videography, plus the occasional stills required to promote movies we make. An in-built flash would have been good for fill-in, as I don’t want to carry more weight with an external flash.
Professionally, I never used fill-in flash, it destroys the look of a good image! And wireless, I did not use built-in flash, because I used a wireless flash trigger if I really needed a flashgun… so, built-in flash MAY have its positive things, but those are there for the people who don’t care about the ultimate looks of the light in an image. I mostly use continuous lightning reflectors or studio lightning via cable tho. You control it how you want to And natural lightning with fast lenses, when I am at an event. So I stand behind my point: it is a good feature, but on a camera of this caliber it is not needed, is not for enthusiasts, hobbyists, etc… And no A99 good user will actually miss it. If they do, then A77 is better for them, which is also a great camera.
The fact that you shot an A700 and now refer to A77 users as “them” is telling. You must not be as good as you think. Everyone knows all REAL pros use Canon and Nikon anyways, right?
Yes, the 70-400
The silver/grey 70-400 was one of the first rumored new/replacement lens
I sincerely was ready to purchase the 70-400 but the rumor stopped me dead and I’m using my old Minolta lens for a while longer , and longer and longer…………
For me at least it’s hard to spend money on something that could well be discontinued any day
A 50mm lens would normally be considered rather short as an “ideal” portrait lens on FF. Also, f1.2 is rather too shallow for a portrait lens (albeit it stopped down a little it might work). Of course, you can always crop down to roughly APS-C size (but then why have an FF camera). Probably closer to the “ultimate” portait combination with an FF camera would be the Zeiss 85mm f1.4.
The reason 50mm isn’t great for FF portraits (at least for head close-ups – full-length is not the same issue) is simply perspective. You have to get in too close, and the resultant exageration of close facial features (like noses) isn’t very flattering.
Depends who you ask really. Many will tell you that 85 is only a solution for those who can’t afford 135 f/1.8 Zeiss. Others will tell you that true ultimate portrait lens is 135mm STF due to it’s bokeh impossible to achieve in any other way.
I’m pretty sure that’ll be mentioned in the launch conference this week. “4 years ago Sony redefined what a FF could be, now, it’s time to do it again”.
Sony’s A99 Looks Great. I am Starting to wonder about the HOT SHOE On the A99 Compare it to A77. You will see the difference I am talking about. It looks like a Standard Manual 2 Contact Hot shoe. So how is the Flash controlled by the Camera???
For Studio Flash No problem. May be they have come with some way to Adjust Flash Output for best Flash Exposures with TTL or Auto Mode. New Technology. The Rx1 Looks the Same. I hope Sony would Give some Info about Ext Flash.
we’ll see, we’ll see. What I hope for is fully wireless, radio flash system. Or at least: Flash system that allows fully customizable groups of flashes with full power and mode control from camera body. And by this I mean a higher number then 2 of them.
Otherwise I can’t justify Sony swapping hotshoes as this won’t make them suddenly compatible with Nikon or Canon flashes – you essentially create yet another completely new system. It’ll be as much compatible with 3rd party flashes as currently any Alpha with iISO hotshoe can be while using 15$ adapter.
So… lets wait and see what are the real changes to flash system with this new hotshoe. Hope Sony used all the chances it brings up to maximum!!!
My guess of the reason for a hotshoe change is more aimed to the video capabilities of the camera, as many accessories such as external mic, lcds, etc… are standarized for ISO shoe. Using an adapter would seriously compromise the stability of this sometimes heavy accessories.
IMO it’s an important step for being competitive in video, and having seen some footage of the D800 and 5D3 and the specs, i don’t think it’ll be very hard for the A99 to overperform these two, specially on framerates, where the canikons can only do 24-30fps at 1080p. I know the majority of the people won’t give a damn about this, but for me, just the detail of having fullHD 60p will be a reason to buy this camera, but only if th IQ is as good as expected.
Now this is interesting, first DSLR where the prism housing doesn’t hang out over the lens mount. I love it – gives the camera a much more compact feel.
They need more fast primes, asap. I’d like to see a mid-range line-up, at the very least a 35/2 and 85/1.8, and in my dreams a 43/1.8. On the high end, I hope the Zeiss 50/1.2 appears at Photokina.
I think this will be the Sony camera that makes Canon and Nikon start sweating.
My biggest desire is that the a99 has the same codec as FS100, since I am sure that sony put their best effort to make the hardware as good as possible…
IT comes out as a bit of a strange camera,
‘only’ 24 MP, but not blazing fast (still fast thou) . a77 shout be out runned.
14 bit raw for ultimate image quality, but only 24 MP.
No built in flash, but Pano mode on the mode dial … Is that ‘Pro’?
New hot shoe: Doesn’t change anything for flash users, but makes studio users save $10 on an adapter.
Hot shoe suggest studio use, but 24 MP and a gazzilion of AF sensors suggest sports/action. Maybe the camera is for the sports shooter that always carry a set of strobes with them?
If studio use, why so much talk about its video capabilities?
Is this the only FF offer that Sony will have, so it have to be jack of all trades?
If it where to be a 900 replacement, the 36 MP, 14 bit raw, and new hot shoe would makes sense.
If it is to be an action camera, the 24 MP and 10+ fps and geat video makes sense. But some of those would have liked to keep their flashes.
The a77′s video blows the 5DMkiii out if the water, in my opinion. I cannot believe canon didn’t put 1080p60 in any of their cameras, neither did Nikon.
If you think the a77 video is better than the 5dm3 you need to buy some new glasses. How about ONE Youtube vid proving your point…just ONE! 1080 x 60 is of limited use by pros anyway.
You think 60fps isn’t used by pro’s? Are you insane? The 60fps feature is unbelievably useful. Any time you need to slow a scene down, add time to a scene that wasn’t long enough, give your footage a slower feel, etc., etc. With 24fps you have no breathing room and far fewer creative options when playing with time and sequence. Canon and especially Nikon (since they’re not in the camcorder business) are fools for not adopting the avchd 60fps codec.
Is that an HD-SDI port next to the mic jacks?!?!? That means we will be getting a clean 10 bit 4:2:2 recording possible with external recorders such as the hyperdect shuttle ans samurai?? Nice!
And I sold my A77 … that’s just a bit upgraded A77 with missing flash…
Bad job Sony, wish Nikon could fix there focus problems on 800′s…
Other wise , looking for a new A77 body, no way I am going to pay 2k+ for that FF A99,,,
quobetah sorry to wake you up but it’s just a stuido flsch sync port. external RAW recording would be an amazing tool, but maybe too much, as you won’t even find it in the 6K€ FS100. Anyway external recording can also be done via HDMI.
Unfortunately, this really looks like the IMHO stupid button layout from a77.
What happened to the perfect layout of the a900?
Again that worst on/off switch ever made, no switch for steady shot, no buttons left of the display, uncomfortable buttons for whitebalance and drive etc… And the weak joystick again (even though that is not really surprising).
Pretty disappointing… Or let’s say: VERY disappointing…
Why Sony, why? I really don’t get it…
At least an ISO hotshoe… But the image quality gotta be really impressive to convince me to stay with this, especially regarding high iso (and when i look at what you did with the a77 i really have doubts that you finally managed to make it).
The built-in microphone looks larger and more sophisticated than on the a77. I don’t know how important that is since it would be similar to having a built-in flash. You could argue that a true “professional” would never use the built-in mic.
If you are asking $2.8k for this camera, then you should include some basic FF specifications like high ISO performance and tethering. A77 was way cheaper, so nobody cared if it had tethering or not. People continue buying it knowing that it has a very poor ISO performance.
It has no built-in flash, so can it trigger flash via 2.4G like Canon 600EX-RT?
It would be great if the body or handgrip has wireless trigger function like ST-E3 RT
Yeah, that would be an interesting ploy. They reverse engineer the Canon firing protocol and incorporate it into the A99, including the compatible physical mount, in order to lure Canon users away from their 5D’s. And in the process, abandon all the existing users.
Kinda like cable companies who offer discount rates to new subscribers only, and fleece their existing customers.
I’m thinking the next model will go wholehog and have a Canon-compatible lens mount.
Granted, you’re not claiming all this…but it got me thinking. Yeah, wireless control would be a benefit, but still no reason to dump their existing protocols. They put different lasers in blu-ray players to maintain backwards compatibility to DVD’s and even CD’s…so it’s not unheard of.
I think A99 should come with the iISO to the new (AIS like) hotshoe adaptor.
For backward compatibility, Sony can make some 2.4G wireless triggers with iISO hotshoe on it.
Aha, it all makes sense. This camera is for pros who like to pay more for less. The next model A88 will have an on-board flash and cost under $2000.
It’ll probably be 36mp too. It’ll be crippled to only shoot 5fps, though.
Works for me. I’ll spend some of my $800 drinking to you “pros”.
What this camera can not do or has:
1. Live-view on eyepiece
2. Live-view on OLED
3. Tethered shooting but very limited.
4. Shoot from camera or adjust & shoot from pc
5. Can not display image after the shot on pc
6. Can not see & view video shooting on pc
7. No pop-up flash (beginners love this)
8. New hotshoe. No one make make for this except Sony
9. You can use any normal flashes or trigger with this shoe
10. All lens become IS which Canon & Nikon can’t do.
11. Eats battery in no time if you use OLED screen much.
12. Vertical grip is a must due to heavy battery drains.
13. Tilt OLED screen when viewing from the front is useless
when you have flash and camera on a tripod.
14. Make sure it comes with the hotshoe adapter when you get
this so you can use your Minolta/Sony flashes and
triggers.
Again, for you new or even experienced photographers, Sony make some big mistakes for not having the following:
1. Tethered shooting – won’t let you chose to card/pc or pc
2. Tethered shots do not show up after those shots.
3. Tethered is limited but better than Adobe Lightroom.
4. No live-view when you are tethered. What the heck!
5. No live-view when you shoot wirelessly. What!!!
6. Video tethered WILL NOT save on computer. What a joke!
7. Mini HDMI port is know to cause loose connections.
8. HDMI is not designed to be removed in & out many time.
Beside you can not adjust controls, modes and fire from
a hdmi monitor.
Why would you want to pay $400.00 for a monitor when you
have laptop?
A computer screen can be calibrated while the monitor
simply can not.
Every Canon dslrs can provide tethered live-view and recording with a much better free software than Sony.
But that’s another story.

I mostly use continuous lightning reflectors or studio lightning via cable tho. You control it how you want to
And natural lightning with fast lenses, when I am at an event. So I stand behind my point: it is a good feature, but on a camera of this caliber it is not needed, is not for enthusiasts, hobbyists, etc… And no A99 good user will actually miss it. If they do, then A77 is better for them, which is also a great camera.
Greg
9 months ago |So, what you’re saying is…35mm format is reserved for pros now? Are you going to come make us all sell our FF Minolta glass and buy Sony APS-C lenses?
Give me a break. You think much too much of yourself and your abilities.
Greg
9 months ago |The fact that you shot an A700 and now refer to A77 users as “them” is telling. You must not be as good as you think. Everyone knows all REAL pros use Canon and Nikon anyways, right?
Greg
9 months ago |Shut up yourself, tool. Only a fool like you would consider removal of a feature to be a benefit to making you look cool.

9 months ago |Yes, the 70-400
The silver/grey 70-400 was one of the first rumored new/replacement lens
I sincerely was ready to purchase the 70-400 but the rumor stopped me dead and I’m using my old Minolta lens for a while longer , and longer and longer…………
For me at least it’s hard to spend money on something that could well be discontinued any day

9 months ago |Paired with Zeiss 50 f/1.2 it’d be ultimate portrait combo… *eyerolls*
Steve Jones
9 months ago |A 50mm lens would normally be considered rather short as an “ideal” portrait lens on FF.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Depends who you ask really. Many will tell you that 85 is only a solution for those who can’t afford 135 f/1.8 Zeiss. Others will tell you that true ultimate portrait lens is 135mm STF due to it’s bokeh impossible to achieve in any other way.

Dennis_photo

9 months ago |Sony’s A99 Looks Great.

9 months ago |we’ll see, we’ll see.

9 months ago |It seems bult-in flash is there. Not that I ever wanted it, though
Carnevali
9 months ago |My guess of the reason for a hotshoe change is more aimed to the video capabilities of the camera, as many accessories such as external mic, lcds, etc… are standarized for ISO shoe.

9 months ago |Now this is interesting, first DSLR where the prism housing doesn’t hang out over the lens mount.

9 months ago |IT comes out as a bit of a strange camera,
‘only’ 24 MP, but not blazing fast (still fast thou) . a77 shout be out runned.
But some of those would have liked to keep their flashes.
well, well, I’ll get it sooner or later …

9 months ago |The a77′s video blows the 5DMkiii out if the water, in my opinion. I cannot believe canon didn’t put 1080p60 in any of their cameras, neither did Nikon.
Racer X
9 months ago |If you think the a77 video is better than the 5dm3 you need to buy some new glasses. How about ONE Youtube vid proving your point…just ONE! 1080 x 60 is of limited use by pros anyway.
TylerBreeden
9 months ago |You think 60fps isn’t used by pro’s? Are you insane? The 60fps feature is unbelievably useful. Any time you need to slow a scene down, add time to a scene that wasn’t long enough, give your footage a slower feel, etc., etc. With 24fps you have no breathing room and far fewer creative options when playing with time and sequence. Canon and especially Nikon (since they’re not in the camcorder business) are fools for not adopting the avchd 60fps codec.

9 months ago |quobetah sorry to wake you up but it’s just a stuido flsch sync port. external RAW recording would be an amazing tool, but maybe too much, as you won’t even find it in the 6K€ FS100. Anyway external recording can also be done via HDMI.

9 months ago |Unfortunately, this really looks like the IMHO stupid button layout from a77.
Sky_walker

9 months ago |The built-in microphone looks larger and more sophisticated than on the a77. I don’t know how important that is since it would be similar to having a built-in flash. You could argue that a true “professional” would never use the built-in mic.

9 months ago |No tethering?
This would be a major mistake so late in the game. At this stage it is completely absurd not to include tethering in any FF camera.
Greg
9 months ago |When has anyone said tethering or not? It’s got a USB jack, right?
You’re right, though. No tethering, no flash, and new/old flash mount will make A850-900 prices skyrocket.
I’ll keep my MFDB, thanks, Sony. You’ve given me ZERO benefit over what my A77 can do.

9 months ago |No metering mode dial? no SSS on/off?!?!?! what kind of user should aim this camera toy?
Sky_walker
9 months ago |A77 didn’t have them either and yet noone cried?
DreamStory
9 months ago |If you are asking $2.8k for this camera, then you should include some basic FF specifications like high ISO performance and tethering. A77 was way cheaper, so nobody cared if it had tethering or not. People continue buying it knowing that it has a very poor ISO performance.
davidlam
9 months ago |It has no built-in flash, so can it trigger flash via 2.4G like Canon 600EX-RT?
It would be great if the body or handgrip has wireless trigger function like ST-E3 RT
Greg
9 months ago |Yeah, that would be an interesting ploy.
They put different lasers in blu-ray players to maintain backwards compatibility to DVD’s and even CD’s…so it’s not unheard of.
davidlam
9 months ago |I think A99 should come with the iISO to the new (AIS like) hotshoe adaptor.
For backward compatibility, Sony can make some 2.4G wireless triggers with iISO hotshoe on it.
Greg
9 months ago |Yeah, the standard shoe could be recessed a bit into the body, and an iISO adapter “permanently” affixed and locked into place, hiding the ISO shoe.
Only when/if you were shooting and needed the ISO would you remove the adapter.
But then, Sony’s not smart enough to pay me to work for them.
Greg
9 months ago |Aha, it all makes sense.

7 months ago |What this camera can not do or has:
