More Sony NEX-7 reviews and news roundup.
Digitalversus (Click here) posted a full NEX-7 review: “Sony’s new NEX-7 is a very well-designed expert-level camera with a customisable interface, a high-def electronic viewfinder and an excellent build and finish. However, Sony’s NEX lenses aren’t good enough to get the best out of the 24-Megapixel sensor. We also found that noise wasn’t handled quite as well in this model.” Anyway, the reviewer liked the camera that much that he gave her 5 stars out of 5!.
Digitalcamerainfo (Click here) previewed the NEX-7: “Is it worth the hefty price difference compared to the mid-range NEX-5N? We won’t have a definitive answer to that question until we get both cameras and run them through our full review process, but we can say that the NEX-7 does offer quite a bit for the money. Whether Sony can squeeze the best out of such a high-megapixel image sensor remains to be seen, however.”
Steve Huff (Click here) tested the Sony NEX-7 with wide angle Leica lenses. He also compared it with the Ricoh GXR A12.
Sony NEX-7 with Rokkor-M Konica and Contax Lens (SonyAlphaNex).

2 years ago |Super disappointing that the NEX 7 sensor seems not to have the 5n’s microlenses.
A lot of users want to use this body with RF glass, althought its correctable in cornerfix this is a major disappointment to me.
Seriously considering the nex5n “downgrade” now.
For me, the only thing nex7 has over the 5n now is the control system (yes, it is very nice tho). 5N is winning on everything else.

2 years ago |If the NEX 7 does not have the 5N’s microlenses, that’s really disappointing. Let’s see Fuji’s X offering in spring!

2 years ago |The obvious lack of microlenses is not really understandable to me.. Sony was advertising the Nex’s legacy lens compatibility quite alot and now the slap legacy lens users in the face
i still have the 7 on preorder though as i guess the whole package is much nicer to use then the 5n+viewfinder. well i guess the wait for a perfect camera is not over yet unlike what i hoped for.

2 years ago |I don’t recall Sony advertising that compatibility that much, but it is indeed a disappointment.
I read that test by Steve Huff last week, it made me reconsider the problem, and order a 5N (received already, but still waiting for the viewfinder).
My wide angles are much happier now.

2 years ago |Yesterday I finally decided I had enough information to choose between the NEX-7 and the NEX-5N. I ordered the 5N from amazon and the OLED viewfinder from eBay. Having the extra megapixels of the NEX-7 would have been nice. I also think the control layout is great. But at the end of the day I wanted the superior high ISO performance, dynamic range and noise characteristics of the NEX-5N. The 5N’s microlenses are also a huge plus, as I plan to use it with a number of old Nikon AI lenses. Finally, although the clip-on OLED viewfinder is expensive, I really like the fact that it can tilt up vertically. The NEX-7 may win in the ergonomics department, but the 5N delivers more in terms of IQ, where it counts.

2 years ago |Dude called the NEX-7 a “digital rangefinder”.
There is nothing “rangefinder” about this cam. He must have just visited the Fuji booth.

2 years ago |the 5N is a very good camera, and adding an adapter such as ea2 or a m42 really gives it a lot of options!!

2 years ago |Sony should give that dude his walking papers. He obviously doesn’t even know the difference between a rangefinder and an EVIL system. At the very least he shouldn’t be talking to the media.

2 years ago |Lenses; I’ve been making the point for several years about Sony’s lens problems and that many of the available optics for the A and E-Mounts don’t match-up well to the sensors performance.
The NEX appears to have two problems, the first is basic product architecture and the second it the understandable desire of the customers of this small platform to have equally small lenses.
I can’t say what is possible in optical design or even say when image quality is good enough, but as sensor technology improves the problems with lenses will be more apparent.
This issue is not Sony’s alone, as all camera manufactures improve the capabilities of their cameras, lenses will be more often seen as the limiting force and camera buyers will look closer at the optical offerings and state-of-the-art imaging capabilities of the lens-mount to decide what vendor’s product to purchase. Much like we purchase computers today, the quality and performance of the electronics will be a given and it will come down to the sharpness, lack of distortion and build quality off the optics that sets one system apart from the other.
I’m not one that thinks Sony should slow-down on MP’s, or release fewer camera bodies, but I do hope that Sony surprises us and the world in a commitment in optical design and production that equals its commitment in its sensor design and production business.

2 years ago |Can you use e.g. Sigma lenses for Sony as well on this Nex?
SRL
2 years ago |Sigma refuses to pay Sony to license products for Sony cameras, so compatibility is always a question anytime a new camera or even firmware is released, and for this reason and several others not part of this post I don’t even consider third-party lenses especially Sigma.
I’ve read that Sigma in the past has for a small charge retrofitted old lenses to make them work on new Sony bodies. Sigma has reportedly stated that new lenses will ship with a compatibility label on the box, but this could take some time to work into retailers’ inventory.
Try third-party products like lenses, flash systems and remote control before you buy

2 years ago |well, i meant that with a LA-EA1 adapter you should be able to use Sigma lenses with an A- mount on the nex7?

2 years ago |Nikon ability to put a phase detection AF and contrast detection AF in their new cameras sensor makes me question the SLT technology which makes you lose at least 1/3 stop and you sometimes have some flare problems because of the reflection.
I would say to them to make a NEX with phase detection, but as the NEX lenses are few it would not replace the A-Mount. So they could still use the same A-mount and flange distance in a SLR-shaped camera but without the “translucent” mirror.
