Most sold system cameras in Japan: Three Sony cameras into the top 10!

Great news for Sony. The new A55 and the two NEX cameras made it into the Japanese top10 of the most sold system cameras in September! Source: BCNranking.
Speaking of manufactures shares. In May Sony had 6.1% of the Japanese sales share. After the NEX camera release Sony jumped up to 19.4%. And in September with the release of the SLT cameras the share further increased to 21.2%. Now they are pretty close to Nikon that is holding the second place (behind Canon) with 24.4%.
I would be damn curious to know how it is going in Europe and US. Sadly those kind of reliable and detailed rankings are available in Japan only.

3 years ago |wow the market share of the Kiss x4/550D is impressive. Over 20% for a single DSLR is something. Combine sales with the Kiss x3/500D and you’re looking at 30% market share with 2 DSLR’s…
Others really need to push to pick up sales. Sony is well on its way though with some impressive products.

3 years ago |Wow, the NEX-3 is going far well than I’ve expected. Here where I live in EU the NEX3 got very very little attention comparing to NEX5.

3 years ago |The canon model on top of the list show that you can hold big piece of the market even with more “serious” DSLR models, as long as they’re good. You don’t need to make Mickey Mouse cameras to push sales.

3 years ago |Both Nikon models are old(ish) ones and on discount currently I suppose. Seems to me Nikon will be the first out of the big two to fall. It’s strange there’s still no response from either them or Canon to the emergence of mirrorless/translucent cameras.

3 years ago |The big news is Canikon’s continuing rapid fall in market share. Together, they held about 80% of the market just a few years ago. In October, in Japan, they held just 60.7% of the market. That’s not an anomaly–it’s part of a trend, related to the emergence of new players (Sony, Panasomic, Samsung) & the introduction of mirrorless cameras. Sony is responsible for a very large proportion, more than 10%, but not all of the Canikon decline in market share.
All other manufacturers, taken together, hold about 18% of the market, somewhat less than Sony holds by itself. And apparetly there has been a marginal slippage of M4/3 market share, which I don’t expect the introduction of the GH2 to change much. Maybe Samsung . . . ?
It remains to be seen whether the D3100 & the D7000 can change things for Nikon, since the Rebels are so strong, and all are being challenged by the Sony SLTs. The D90 has been doing so well this far into its life span because of a great price point; the D7000 is being introduced at a somewhat higher price point than any of the leaders. Can it make a serious market share impact? Can the 60D? In their market segment, perhaps, but I suspect that they will not have a large share of the overall market.
A great marketplace success for Sony. But I want to see both the A77 & the A7xx. And I want to see Sony actually market the A560 & A580. By early reports, they are great cameras.

3 years ago |Currently Canon has the most impressive marketing strategy in Japan. They have attractive TV advertising; they have photo contests; they sponsor high school photo clubs to use Canon Kiss Digital; most Japanese photography magazines are dominated by Canon advertising, thus making indirect impact to magazines’ product preview/review.
I think Canon, Nikon, Sony and others are all having good products, but the marketing technique makes a big different on sales figure.

3 years ago |These figures are very interesting when compared with the most recent weekly BCN rankings and others which seem to show a very wide fluctuation depending on price reductions. Up to end of June the m4/3rds had captured 20% of the market in Japan and that spiked to 30% in June with the introduction of the NEXs. However these August sales figures indicate that this penetration has returned to 21% with only 8.3% for m4/3 which has shrunk and NEX share increased to 13%.
Compare that to the latest BCN weekly camera model sales showing the Pany GF1 jumping all way up to #2 as result of price reduction now 55% below list while the nearest NEX5 model has dropped all the way back to #43? You figure.
So it appears that Pany with its drastic discounts to GF1 and other models are quickly regaining share and the market is very fluid. Hard to explain why Pany has reduced price on a popular GF1 so far unless they want to clear out inventory for a new model coming sooner than most expected and they expect that model to be very popular and attractive and need to improve market share.

3 years ago |Are all camera sales in Japan registered in these rankings or only those represented by a several of the largest stores? The reason I ask is the sales rankings published by Amazon Japan show a significantly different picture with the GF1 20/1.7 being the #1 seller (even if the Kiss 4 probably is #1 if all models are combined) and NEXs way down the scale. So it appears that Pany marketing both in Japan and US is now focused in selling on Amazon while Sony with NEXs in wider marketing outlets? Just how small is Amazon is relation to the overall market and is it in any way a fair reflection of overall sales?
