NAB news: Sony unveils the cinematic and a 3D camera
Sony’s Shapiro unveiled a prototype digital cinematic camera scheduled to be released next year. The camera has a 35mm sensor and records video on SxS. Release in 2011 ![]()
I didn’t get any certain information yet but it seems that the camera has an Alpha Mount and you will be able to use current Sony Alpha Lenses.
Sony also presented a concept prototype of the future 3D camera. It features a double 3-inch CMOS sensor, Full HD (1920×1080), interchangeable lenses, convergence control and full metadata support. Field tests are scheduled to start in July.

3 years ago |Any idea what the resolution of the cinematic camera will be? I wonder if there is now a standard for digital theaters of the future that will be unveiled in the next year or so. Any speculation out there?

3 years ago |If the camera really uses Alpha DSLR lenses, this could be part of a larger trend which could once again see video diverging from DSLR still photography (or as an indication of Sony’s thinking regarding the separation of video and photography). Case in point, Panasonic’s dedicated MFT professional camcorder.
Good for DSLRs: Sony sees Alpha system and lenses in the professional angle, and capable of video. Alpha + video technology is possible.
Bad for DSLRs: Sony wants to keep video on a separate device to its Alpha DSLRs. If dedicated camcorders using Alpha lenses can do video better than DSLRs can, there is less motivation for Sony to implement video on DSLRs.
