9 months ago |That Jessops UK price is a disgrace. At today’s exchange rate £1685 = $2780 (US). That’s a 40% mark up. Rip off Britain at it’s worst. You could fly to New York and buy one and still save money.
Beer_Stalker
9 months ago |Jessops are a disgrace. However, the US prices you see do not include sales tax so our prices will always look 20% worse.
Futile
9 months ago |in the US you don’t pay Sales Tax if you buy online (i.e.. out of state).
Zyg
9 months ago |I live and buy on-line in the US all the time (even between states). There is an on-line sales tax which is added to you bill (at least I’ve never seen it NOT added to my bills), and it is calculated according to your billing address (state). If for some reason the on-line business doesn’t charge a sales tax (which is very rare), you’re supposed to pay the tax when you submit your state income tax return. If you don’t pay the taxes either on-line or on your state income tax return (and are caught) you will be fined extensively by your state (the amount will vary from state to state).

9 months ago |The popphoto image quality is noticeably better than the Imaging Resource image quality
And it looks like it’s a much newer version of the a77, though still pre-production of course
If you look at the iso6400 images, you see the smudginess from the noise reduction, but there is a lot of fine detail still there under the smudge. Text is visible and readable. Texture of brickwork is still present.
Some better raw processing is really going to bring out the best from the a77. Anyone who currently has a sony camera will appreciate that jpeg mode is too aggressive with the noise reduction.
Jennzhen
9 months ago |I’ve seen comparison between A77 and A900, and looks like A77 is quite comparable to A900 in terms of IQ and high ISO. Of course it’s not apple-to-apple comparison, A900 being FF and can’t use the 16-50mm crop lens. I’m just wondering that maybe Imaging Resource got a bad prototype lens or something. Surely the production lens is not available yet.
Anyone seen A77 sample images using CZ lens? Maybe the 24-70?
Ben
9 months ago |What I would really like to see is high ISO sample images taken under lighting conditions that would actually warrant the high ISO

To me, this is very acceptable. The smudge will go, once you use proper noise reduction. Still a TON of detail and dynamic range left in that image.

9 months ago |Even looking at the IR samples, the A77 seems comparable to the D7000 at 6400 – definitely not better, but not worse either. Acceptable considering 1. it’s a 24 mpixel sensor, 2. the loss of light from the pellicle mirror, and 3. Sony’s inferior NR algorithms.
Swemba
9 months ago |Here’s the big question, I already have shoulder rig, Mattebox, external LCD, etc. Do I purchase an A77 or Vg20?
I’m leaning towards A77 because it’s cheaper and I already have lenses for it and as far as I can tell has a better sensor.
WillW
9 months ago |From looking at the specs, there are a good number of tradeoffs: (and I am sure I have missed some)
The VG20 will cost you more (1600+400 for the adapter), will have a lower number of auto focus points when shooting with said adapter, and will not have steady shot for alpha lenses. In exchange, you have a slightly larger lens selection, touch screen to select focus (which the NEX7 would also give you), and better audio without going with a separate recorder, the ability to shoot longer videos. As for sensor quality for video, you will probably need to wait for more reviews to find out more on that, though one review has noted that the video on the A77 was somewhat cropped from the image, so that could be a down side. I would make sure to try the VG20 before going that direction though; I liked the VG10s when I rented them, but I would not have wanted to own one, and while it looks like a lot of the issues were fixed (touch screen and menu dial moved to the outside) it is a lot of cash to spend with out playing with it first.
NEXfive
9 months ago |Another interesting question would be the video crop factor, since this might limit the use of an existing lens collection. Has been 1.8 with VG10 and could have changed with the new sensor. Still also curious about that concerning NEX-C3 & NEX-5N…
acolyte
9 months ago |Each one’s a different beast. A77′s aimed towards photography and all rounder. It’s a bunch of new technology put into one so it is more like a toy right now. VG20 is more focused on handycam capabilities. That is more like an experimental handycam.
Neither quality is confirmed. What would you like to use your video/camera for?
Renato M.
9 months ago |Admin, about availability, the NEX-5n will be available in Japan September 9th, right? Do you know about US? Is it the same date?
Swemba
9 months ago |Mostly sports shooting. The phase detect focus works well on this so I can work the zoom on my focus wheel. Ergonomics don’t matter since I have those covered. I record all my audio external so only need a scratch mic on the camera. The touch screen stuff is meh to me. Touch focus is comsumerish. Going to use alot on green screen so the better image will win my investment.

9 months ago |These (Popphoto) are the best pics I’ve seen till now. Can’t wait for Raw based pics to show the real potential of this sensor.
Jennzhen
9 months ago |Can’t say Popphoto has the best pic.
I downloaded the first pic (dsc0337) with trees and park … found it to be too bright and not sharp … turns out they’re using f/8, ISO 400, with +1 EV.
It could be a nice pic, but it was butchered
I guess it would’ve been better with -0.3EV in a bright day.
On a positive note, the pic was taken at 16mm and the distortion seems to be minimal, can’t really notice any distortion. Perfect! Can’t butcher that, can you?
David
9 months ago |That’s because they are terrible photographers who took boring shots and can’t meter properly.
They’re also unprocessed, which is unrealistic but almost everyone would apply basic adjustments to their images before putting them online
Bart
9 months ago |A bit late, but . .
Did you guys have a look at the Engadget site?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/sony-alpha-a77-hands-on-preview-video/
They compared the A77 to the 21MPx Canon 5DmkII (FF).
It appears that the A77 100% crop is much sharper at f/5.6 than at f/10!!
According Steve Jones this is due to diffraction of the light at f/10 for a 24MPx APS sensor, which will limit the sharpness. A FF 24MPx sensor’s sharpness would not be diffraction limited at f/10.
Now, I’m not a physicist, so I can’t tell whether it’s true or not. But if so, do we need to shoot below f/5.6 all the time for sharpest photos?
Has an APS 24MPx sensor a too small pitch? B.R. bArt

trees (dsc0337) in general there are no details.
Only contours and a paint
Bark of trees – it is awful
Jennzhen
9 months ago |Agreed. There are some awful pics there. Some are too heavy-handed on the exposure compensation.
But I’m now quite fond of the new lens with its minimal distortion.

9 months ago |So, is it right that there won’t be a vertical grip for the a65? I can’t find any mention of one anywhere. I presume, because of the size difference, that the a77 won’t fit the a65?
Jan Kolena
9 months ago |I’m afraid your’re right – it won’t be any battery/vertical grip for A65. I think the main reason is marketing, but also the size may cause it… Or it’s only argument for the marketing

9 months ago |i’m so happy now to see more better images from this 2 camera.. there is no doubt a65 & a77 will be the best camera from sony. before this i was confused with the IQ results. i was going for a65 with sony 16-105mm but i can’t resist the a77 body… so i decided to buy a77 body with sony 35mm f1.8. my budget was around usd1700 only.. hope this will give me good IQ.

9 months ago |Thank you for the link. I like IQ at ISO 50. It is good enough for my shooting style. I’ll be using ISO 50 in studio. Noise at ISO 100 and above is visible in dark areas. But I’m not surprised. I expected that from APS-C with 24Mpx. People wanting better ISO performance at 24Mpx and above should buy professional equipment which is FF or larger sensor. Well, those waiting for A700 replacement with exceptionally good high ISO performance for exchange for less megapixels have no luck this time.
Matt
9 months ago |You’ll be happy with the 35mm f1.8. It’s cheap, but produces IQ that could make it cost 2 or 3 times as much. It’s a very, very good little lens. It’s light, cheap and very plastic, built more like a saturn ion than a tank, but if IQ is what you care about…the 35mm will deliver.
ray oody
9 months ago |I have a silly question but plz bare with me.everybody’s talking how 24.3mp is too much for A77 and ofcourse NEX7.first samples of A77 wasn’t promising either.the noise was bad..but wat if I chose to shoot in 16mp from the setting.would that going to give me less noise, better result as far as IQ.and eventually more pleasing image?.I know some people said don’t decide yet cause its a pre production.but there’s a huge percentage that 24.3 would be some of a pain in the a** as jpeq.unless we’re gonna shoot in RAW and edit it ourselves.so I hope shooting in less resolution gives us a better result!!
H.R.
9 months ago |I’ve been reading reviews on the A77 and certainly it’s not living up to standards that people have placed on it…right, wrong or indifferent. I hope that the final production model will address the obvious image quality that is present in the preproduction model output and correct them. Image quality is paramount and they need to get this right if they want the a77 to be a success.
No excuses on this one like with the a55′s overheating video issue. Sony defenders can say it’s a camera, but it’s clear people in the market want a camera and a camcorder in one. There are quite a few people that are unhappy with the a55 because it can’t take more than a few minutes of video, which is absolutely pathetic in my opinion. This pretty much ignores a good amount of people who want to film using a DSLR, which plays to Sony’s strength in video. Hopefully that tidbit was corrected in the a77 as well.
Beer_Stalker
9 months ago |The A33/A55 was caused by the SSS mechanism. With the A77 SSS is disabled during video and the information from the accelerometers is used to digitally stabilize the image [info from Paul Genge of Sony last night].

9 months ago |I checked those: upto ISO800 OK. Above ISO1600 colors of some red/orange flowers look like they had a ‘water color’ effect on them. Must be a JPEG and/or NR thing.

Used lens: 50mm/F1.8 (DT).
David
9 months ago |It’s definitely a jpeg thing.
A700 and a580 samples all looked like this at first
Just be patient, wait for production models and wait for raw support.
But notice how the picture samples are getting better, the more recent the reviewer had the camera. Imaging resource beta firmware pictures were too noise reduced. Popphoto is much better.
FD
9 months ago |I’m disappointed by the samples from the 55-210, I was hoping it would have better resolution at the tele end especially with such a small aperture. I know it’s not a mega expensive lens but the excellent Canon 55-250mm is sharp wide open at the long end and costs less whilst having a faster aperture. I can only hope Sigma or Tamron release a better affordable tele. Hopefully the samples are not a true representation but it doesn’t look promising.

9 months ago |Does anybody know if the NEX-7 really will be available with this black version of the SEL-1855 kit lens?
And since at least the LA-EA2 Adapter will bring Firmware 05 to NEX-3/5 will there be other improvements or a chance for a firmware wish list?

9 months ago |Wow.. That’s a scary comparison.. I hope the new sensor it’s really not worse than previous models on IQ side.. It would be suicidal from Sony. I think they had the opportunity to kick really hard with A77 NEX-7 but if IQ falls short it will be a fail..
Marek
9 months ago |IQ of prints will be better or equal to 16Mxp sensor of A55/D7000/A580 for sure. If there is enough light for low ISO then there will be also higher resolution. Noise kills resolution of any sensor. Nice images at ISO 400 and above are result of a good noise filter rather then anything else. What is important is signal/noise ratio at lowest ISO.
H.R.
9 months ago |That comparison is disappointing (yet again). The noise is much more prevalent in the a77 sample jpg. In looking around at all of the high ISO samples, they are all disappointments. I do not see why anyone would spend more money on an a77 than a Canon 60D or Nikon D7000.
I would hope that Sony received feedback from all of the users of the preproduction models as these samples on the internet have been stated to be taken from them. I would hope that Sony made corrections.
Nawaf
9 months ago |Some what of a let down but it’s too early to tell. Personally I don’t know why they had to make it a 24MP and sacrifice on IQ. A NR off switch would be great!
Matt
9 months ago |I’m REALLY torn on what to do. I’m 100% getting the A77. I have the Zeiss 16-80 right now, but am interested in the 16-50 F2.8. I’m really torn on what to do. The new 16-50 is weather sealed like the A77 body, which is a plus, and SLRgear is saying it is generally more consistently sharp than the Zeiss, though it has worse CA (which I HATE). It’s constant 2.8 vs. the Zeiss’ variable 3.5-4.5 and has the awesome SSM motor (the Zeiss is a normal screw drive). BUT the Zeiss gets an additional 30mm of reach which overlaps nicely with my 70-300 G.
I’m heading on a 5 months round the world trip in March, going from Malaysian rainforest to the desert of Israel. So the weather sealing seems like a ice feature, especially with the weather sealed body. I’m not sure I’d miss the extra 30mm, as if I need to really bring something close I’d either just move forward or use my super tele. The F2.8 is also quite nice, though not essential (the difference between 2.8 and 3.5 is almost negligible in most normal shooting).
Ah decisions, decisions.
Gabriel
9 months ago |At http://www.quesabesde.com you can download the raw files and process them in Rawtherapee 3 alpha 1 so you can see what the noise is really. My opinion is that sony have the worst jpeg engine on earth, and maybe on the entire universe
mikmok
9 months ago |Imaging Resource also posted several raw files with all ISO settings from 50 to 16.000. As mentioned, they can be converted in Raw Therapy, though colours are quite odd because there isn’t any camera profile yet. I get the best results with demosaicing set to “vng4″. The standart setting seems to be “amaze”, which produces odd textile-like patterns when viewed at 100 pct. Conversions in RT (vng4) result in nice grain-like noise structure. ISO 50 to 800 go from noise free to very fine grained noise (not likely to show up in prints at all). ISO 1600 and 3200 show some noise, but in a nice film-grain style. Colour noise is showing up as well, but cleans up nicely with simple noise reduction. In print sizes up to A2, I personally don’t think I would do anything much to reduce luminance noise at these ISO settings. Even at ISO 6400 noise seems OK if you like prints with a little roughness. ISO 12800 and 16000 are noisy indeed, but not utterly useless. Colour noise cleans up, but luminance noise (grain) is rather persistent.
Another observation: The dynamic range seems very (!) promising. The shots from Imaging Resource of the large white house in harsh sunlight show no signs of highlight clipping at all. And detailed shadows are retained and it’s even possible to open up the shadows quite a bit. Apply a little sharpening, and the low ISO files show amazing qualities – and very odd colours, still
High ISO files doesn’t worry me a bit any more. The A77 (and 65) seem quite capable in this direction.
If experimenting with Raw Therapy seems too excessive, try Googles free Picasa 3. It reads the raw files too, and the conversions are not too bad either (still rather odd colours). No advanced settings, though, but try auto contrast and auto colour, and expect to see all the colour noise and luminance noise the files contain – but not a shade of watercolour effect…

9 months ago |It amazes me how some of these “professional” review sites are comparing the A77 images at 24mp to Camera X, which has much lower resolution. Of course the 24mp picture will look noisy compared to a 15 or 16mp. A true test is to show them both at 15 or 16mp.
It is also extremely unfair to compare the A77 to cameras equipped with fewer megapixels AND a full frame sensor. COME, REVIEWERS! LETS SEE SOME USEFUL COMPARISONS!

9 months ago |Having looked at the newer images , the A77 camera is starting to look more and more promising. The photography blog images especially tell a more promising tale than earlier image samples. I see noise in the sky even at iso 100, but I think that this is simply because the camera procesing is not complete yet. Nevermind the noise for now, look at those photos and you can see the excellent potential this a77 camera has, once it is all wrapped up and complete, I have high hopes the Images will be stunning. Yes, i used the word stunning, use your eyeballs and check them out for yourself, especially the photos of inside the ruined coliseum, and the ruined temple pillars. I tell you, the a100- a300 sure didn’t look that vivid. It’s going to work out great in the final stage I believe.
