New Sigma lenses (also for Sony A-mount?).

With the only exception of the 500mm f/4.0 (and the new lens kit announcement) Sony didn’t show new Alpha Mount lenses at the CP+ show. Don’t worry new lenses will be announced along the A77! Meanwhile Sigma announced four new interesting lenses at the Cp+ show in Yokohama. Sadly Sigma has not specified when and for which mount the lenses will be released.
A good news: Sigma Japan also announced that the 85mm f/1.4 for Sony will be available on February 11th. You can preorder the lens at Adorama. That’s a good quality and cheaper alternative of the Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 (Click here to check price at Amazon) lens.

the macro is 105 f/2.8 with internal focusing
the 50-150 f/2.8 is also with internal focusing
all those lenses are available for sigma only…so far
the 120-300mm is f/2.8 and is available to Nikon, Canon not Sony, and i don’t think they will introduce it for Sony

Some manufacturers list some zoom lenses and internal focusing, but they are referring only to the focusing part, it will still extend if you zoom from the lowest focal length to the longest.

2 years ago |I don’t care for 3rd party lenses. Sooner or later you run into troubles with them: Either the image quality is below that of the original manufacturer, or the mechanical built, or the mount doesn’t follow all the specs (and they won’t work with the next generation body). If all would equal the original lenses, then the price tag would be the same as well — so, I don’t see any reason for experiments…
Sky_walker
2 years ago |What you are saying is mostly true with Canon/Nikon (especially with various AF issues there) – we in Sony are in lucky enough position that 3rd party lenses work as well as the original one, and even if you run into trouble with generations – they’ll fix it for free.
Big chunk of my lenses are 3rd part and never had any problems with them, moreover – if you know how to pick them they can have better build quality than comparable Sony lenses, plus they have affordable SSM lenses, unlike Sony which demands huge pile of cash for it or you end up with SAM joke.
As for image quality – it VERY depends on cases. Some lenses are really below Sony offers, though often they are also cheaper than, but other shine comparing to what Sony can give (eg. Tokina 11-16).

5 months ago |Alot of the original manufacturer’s lenses are also not on par with OEM brands like Sigma. Take for example the 18-135mm Nikkor ED kit lens that come with the Nikon bodies, it pales in optical performance when compared to a 10X zoom lens like the Sigma 18-200 OS HSM Mk.1. sharpness, tele-macro, and neautral colours, etc. Sigma wins hands down. I am a big fan of Carl Zeiss lens, and I use Nikon systems with Nikon lenses. However the problem with some of the ‘ loyal ‘ users are that they are too deeply entrenched that original is best (just like what I BLINDLY used to be), but later proven wrong when I included an earlier version of the then famous Tamron SP 90mm F2.5 MF lens, and the results when compared to the Zeiss 85mm F1.4, I preferred the Tamron over the Zeiss 85mm. Why? Bcos it was sharper, easier to focus and lighter; please it was a macro lens, which everybody should know by now, are the better lens design that gives more dimensional and sharper images than the equivalent non-macro verions, and thats why macro lenses are ALWAYS cost more.
I used to shoot with the Canon 5D Mk.1 for more than a year, and 1/2 of that time, I was using an EF 35-135mm IS USM lens. It was only until I switched over to a the 24-105 F/4 L , that I realised how bad the EF lens I had, no contrast, and always white washed-out. And the fact my Sigma 18-200 OS HSM Mk.1 was supposingly a cheaper and more inferior lens, i.e. 10X zoom, that I was suprised to see there is no white washed out on my later pictures. My Sigma lens cost me less than the Canon EF 35-135 or almost the same price as the Nikon 18-135, but optical performance wise, it won hands down. By now, I already own this Sigma 18-200 OS lens for more than 5 years, it has never broken down, no matter how many times I roughed handle it, it works easily with all the newer Nikon bodies, except for a few inconveniences.
And Sky_walker is correct! Sigma does help users stay with the newer bodies, by upgrading some of the older lens models FOR FREE!! Look at RB’s comments about how original lens maker are the best (which in the past like the 70′s or 80′s is corerct), but this is 2012 already bro! Refer to the first generation ZF lenses from Carl Zeiss for nikon bodies: why does CZ has to launch a newer ZF.2 verion lense for Nikon to talk to the newer Nikon bodies? Bcos Carl Zeiss is also considered 3rd PARTY LENSES! So does this mean Carl Zeiss as 3rd party lenses are inferior to Canon L and Nikon ED? I love my Canon L lens bro, but Zeiss is way better than Canon L lens, without doubt! L lenses are the best Canon can offer, and most of the CZ lenses that average users like RB are just the mid range lenses. You have NOT even seen or feel the higher end CZ series with the APO acroynm. Yes! the CZ lenses you average users are talking about are the normal range and they are already better than those Canon L lenses. Do u really want to compete with the higher end APO and Aspherical Carl Zeiss lenses? please!!

5 months ago |Another average civic minded user whom, just like me, love Zeiss lenses. But my bro and comrade AVESTA, you have to live out of your shell man. this is 2012. Lenses are far superior than they were in the past dude! No doubt, to me, Zeiss lenses are the best in the world, but bro, can you afford them all? If you are a mega billionaire, you would not even bother to come and this forum and make comments like all other average users. Dont be offended, I am with you for Zeiss but hey, let’s get real, I can’t afford the entire range, and how many times, you wanted to buy a PLANAR lens, but ended up with a SONNAR instead, cos the price was better (i.e. cheaper) for you?
Then there was another less educated user in this forum who kept on yaking that Sigma lenses has front or back focus, but original lens does not have….oh my god! how one is so ignorant! Not all lenses are meant for all bodies and it is hard to ignore the fact that one needs to just go to SIGMA TECH SUPPORT centre and get it calibrated, and thats it! When you are hungry, you go get food. Thirsty? Drink some water. Feeling sick? Go see a doctor. If u feel you have a back or front focus, get your exquisite buttocks and let the boys from SIGMA calibrate the lens for you to make it happen! Don’t be a sore buttock who only sits at the couch and comment on everything using a remote control… duh!
Bro, Sigma lenses are indeed very good these days! I have a Nikon 50mm 1.4, and supposingly one of the best 50mm lens on the market. picture quality, expected from a F/1.4, thats all, but when I used it on another Fuji body, it experience front focus! So is this the problem with the lens or the camera? I din have this problem with my Nikon bodies. So, does this mean, that ORIGINAL lens DOES NOT have lens back and front focus issues? OF COURSE NOT!
Ans yes, Sky_walker is right. In my country, the only 3rd party lens and takes care of customers as if they are the manufacturer’s lens, is SIGMA. Tamron does not bother with these customer service issues! Besides, Sigma lens and their technologies are way way ahead of Tokina and Tamron. Look at their latest FLD glass elements which is equivalent to the flourite elements used in Canon L… I was impressed with the results. Sharper and less barrel distorions, etc.
Sigma recently launched a 150mm Macro APO…oh my god, you have no idea how sharp this lens can be! True, it came 2nd ONLY to Zeiss 100mm Macro Planar, but it beat all other Jap brands like Nikon and Canon! Go on and google this, and you will know what I mean. The Sigma 150mm APO macro, is indeed a much better lens than most brands, and this proofs that Sigma has come a long long way since the earlier days of OEM is inferior. These average civic minded users who feel original is best, are literally brochure readers, online surfers who seldom goes out, have a drink beverage and remote control next to them virtually all the time, and hardly, I repeat, hardly, an active shooter of various types of photography, being only shooting, slow moving subjects.. this I assure is very typical of such stick-your-butt in the couch only hobbyist. These guys usually collect lenses and keep them, rather than actually use them in real photography shoots. If they really go out and shoot more than still life and slow moving snails, they would have realised SIGMA lenses are indeed much better and just like what PANFRUIT commented, SIGMA brings the heat to the original boys. This is NOT a myth, its a fact! Get out of your house, take out those collection of lenses you hav in the dry cabinet that you spend so much money on to show off to your friends, and go and take some real pictures, bro!! Instead of being a sore somebody who only surfs the web and dont shoot much but instead showing off your equipment when your group goes shooting with you claiming there isn’t much to shoot (loser!), show off your pictures instead, please! You are only as good as the cabinet that keep your expensive lenses for display.
Real photographers are those who tried and test lenses all the time, takes bad pictures but learn to correct them all the time, and yes, able to be open minded of changes and technological improvements of makers such as SIGMA. If a 3rd party lens maker can product such superior lenses like the 30 F1.4, 85 F1.4, 120-400 APO, 120-300 F2.8 APO, and allows REAL photographers produce great results at a fraction of the investment one original would have to make with the original lens maker, this then, is being smart and up to date with everyone. Why be a low IQ no brainer and spend the excessive money when you can spend lens, AND give more money out to charity for others who are less fortunate? Education all starts from proper family values, which makes great offsprings with great investment mentality. learn something today bub!!

2 years ago |Sigma is certainly interesting because there lenses with exciting specs at a price less than Zeiss. In the end, I have heard way too many complaints about quality control. That’s just too hard to ignore.
Sigma has already announced that many of their present lenses have focusing issues on the a33 and a55. That sucks for those people who spent good money and would not be able to use bodies because their lens collection has problems with the technology.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |1) You can get lens fixed for free, so it’s not that Sigma ignores issue, or makes any problems. If you’ll get lucky you can even get it done right in place, without re-visiting or waiting for delivery back.
2) If you run into AF problems than they can calibrate the lens for your body. (there might be a problem though if you have two bodies and the issue is different on any of them…. lol…)
At least that’s how it works in my country, don’t know how it’s in other places of the world. Eg. here Tamron doesn’t provide any such service, and if I want my lens calibrated I need to send it somewhere to other country and pay for both delivery and calibration service :/ but my Tamron lenses are fine lucky enough.

2 years ago |In the UK you pay if you can not provide prove that you bought the lens new AND in the UK. If you have bought it second-hand, tough! If you have bought it outside the UK, tough! You pay.
The real issue with Sigma is that they stop supporting lenses and run out of chips, then you are REALLY stuffed. A lens should last for DECADES like Minolta glass has done. We all know the old Sigmas to avoid as they will not work on any Sony Alpha, now we find that we need to avoid ALL second-hand Sigma lenses as they will not work on the A33/55 and future Sony’s at all!
Basically if you are buying a second-hand Sigma you now have to add the cost of getting it re-chipped. It doesn’t make it a bargain any more and maybe that’s why Sigma don’t give a fuck about you.
RB
2 years ago |See, that’s what I mean. If you add the cost for the hassle of shipping or bringing the lens in and waiting for the fix, which works then for one body only, the original lens would have been paid-off already….

Its as much alternative as Samyang 85mm/f1.4 .. which actually can be, cause at least optically its pretty good. Otherwise, alternative to Zeiss is probably older manual Zeiss or Leica.

5 months ago |Another less-informed, or ill-informed user of photographic lenses. people are afraid of the unknown, and will refuse to try or touch it, until someone and everyone does, and then probably its time to try and touch it. This kind of mentality lives in the 80s where the only lens maker can make you proud are the German ones. For goodness sake, since the 70s, 50-70% of all the lens that Carl Zeiss produced were made in japan by Yashica for Contax SLR. Only the made-in-Germany ones were truly orginators, else, you were still buying a jap lens dude, DUH! Your modern 35mm 135 format Zeiss lens are made by either Sony for Alpha, OR, Cosina for the rest of the remaining percentage. Stop shouting Zeiss here and there and thousands of dollars. Its Cosina who makes your lens dude! Dont start the thousands of dollars and try to act rich… I do not believe you can afford the entire Zeiss range of lenses from both Cosina and Sony, and frankly speaking not many of us, including myself, can afford too! So we choose the next best and most reliable and best performance brand of all, SIGMA!
First of all, how many Carl Zeiss lenses do you have? can you take a photo and show off your entire collection to us, and by the way, show us your REAL zeiss taken pictures, please. talk is cheap and action speaks louder. YOu are just reading the specs and numbers off the lens which you called Zeiss.
Again, dont be offended, I am a Carl Zeiss lens user myself, and I truly appreciate the Carl Zeiss optical superiority. To me, there is no other than Zeiss. But, I have learnt to be real and in touch with reality. If you are only talking about 85 F1.4, you probably only shoot portraits that with subjects that stood still for you for over an hour, not moving, isn’t it?
On the other hand, how many AF Zeiss are being made for Sony Alpha currently and how many Zeiss lens do you ACTUALLY own for the Sony alpha mount? Probably 3pc I will put it. The rest of the other Zeiss lens, if you are not informed are MF, and therefore, i would understand you use the Samyang korean lens to make a comparision cos for your type of photography where your subject only moves alittle between 45 to 60mins just for you to capture 5 shots, one is better off shooting film and salon photography, just like the folks back in the 70′s.
In 2012, we are shooting fast objects, move the move, and go with where the subject is moving towards, sideways, or away from the camera. A sudden change of movement, left to right and vice versa, and sped away. This is all too common. The age of fast AF is here to stay, and while as traditional as I am with portraits that only moves every 60mins for you to take enough good shots I can count with my 10 fingers, please try shooting a moving object in all directions and get that in focus. Sports, Car rallies, F1, Wild life. Are you saying you can use your slow 85mm F1.4 Zeiss to capture an F1 car moving as quick as a bee? Surely Not! How many Zeiss lens users do you see, who are traditional and still a sports photographer? Or are you saying you Only use Zeiss, (and maybe Leica to some extend) and you wont use other lens? If you are saying this, then perhaps its not that the OEM / 3rd party lens like SIGMA is not capable It’s because you only shoot slow or non-moving subjects like still life, and buildings and snail-pace thingy, that gives you enough time.
Just like Canon L lens users, we SIGMA users (thats correct, you heard it! I use both Carl Zeiss and SIGMA lenses these days) are aware of the contraints lenses like your slow Zeiss 85mm F1.4 AF and perhaps the EVEN dead-slower Samyang lens simply cannot perform up the expectation that fast shooters like myself and the rest of the English speaking world do!
The very mentioned of Samyang lens, already indicated, you have maybe 1 or 2 Zeiss lens to front your display but they are just to expensive for you to use, and therefore you go and choose a MF lens like the Samyang after reading DPreview isnt it? Please bro.. stop condemning others, cos you are also condemning yourself when you subconsiously mentioned Samyang!
SIGMA lenses these days still carry on the tradition of using the APO term on their lenses, which indicated their conformity to the traditions of their beliefs. Sure, they are cheaper and lighter, but bro… they are APOchromatic lens and they work! The colours are great, the pictures are sharp, and you DO NOT even need to do sharpening on all these new SIGMA lenses, compare to your Samyang if you are to shoot sports and F1 like the rest of the photography world.
Rather than condemning other brands and yourself at the same time, you should learn to embrace new technologies and the effect they have on our modern society. SIGMA lenses are very fast and very sharp these days and already beat many of the original makers lens. Where is your so called Samyang? Stop lying to yourself and get real. You can’t snap sports photography and fast moving objects, so just leave it to others to do their bid. We all learn from each other the good things to better ourselves in photography and in prudence use of our braincells, something you clearly have yet to start doing, my Zeiss user comrade!

5 months ago |Do you actually work in SIGMA japan or you are just one of those who spend most of your miserable life surfing the web and getting only shower once a month cos the fleas wont want you to? First of all, you are against Sony alpha users for no apparent reason, and secondly, you are like the rest of those ignorant closet clowns who dont know anything about lenses. By the way, do you actually own a REAL camera system or just buying an expensive Leica point and shoot compact camera that you fire afew times during thanksgiving dinner?
In my opinion, you are in the same basket as those civic minded potato couch sitters. I have been using SIGMA lenses all my photo hobby career ( I cant find a better sorry!) and true, every maker have issues, hello? anyone home? You meant to say you have NEVER complain about any of your purchase before? how clever? must have been a used item that you find unbreakable and offered a million pounds to buy over from your friend!
Seriously, back to photography. There are always kick back from time to time, but whats more important is that the manufacturer takes them seriously and have in place technial support, sales support. etc. Quality control has NEVER been a major issue with SIGMA as far as my usage is concerned. I have dropped my 18-200 OS HSM many times, and especially my SIGMA TTL flashes.. like clockwork, these guys refuse to quit and keep on working.
I and many others like me, buy SIGMA because optical performance is unquestionably good and consistent for decades, and SIGMA lens and flashes are VERY reliable, the after sales service is good and getting better all the time. How I know? cos I have many SIGMA lens piers and we all sing the same experience. We are treated with high royal regards by them with our before and after purchase from authorised SIGMA retail shops.
You obviously have no idea what I am talking about cos you have always been the stingy beggar closet photographer of a person who buys off used item from Ebay and yahoo auction last time, and then found that your purchases were always dud. You most likely could haave purchased used items and regretted it many times over and instead of blaming yourself, you chose the brand of the item from a shop that sells you 1/4 of the market price of a new piece. Of course thats silly and immature bro! Take a look at your bathroom mirror, you will see yourself as a perfect match for a vegatable too!

5 months ago |SIGMA lens quality is as good as original lens maker nowadays and as a SIGMA user, I am in support of your brand also! you are right! Build quality and all these new FLD and ELD lens elements with APO designs truly make your lens extra special. No doubt the optical performance from SIGMA is always improving and each lens is better than the previous same one. I use Leica and Carl Zeiss lens also, but when it comes to Japanese brand, there is only one name I rather use for my photo hobby, and thats your brand, SIGMA! Why SIGMA? your company makes very very good lens, especially the 50-150 APO, 70-200 APO, 120-300 APO, but your SIGMA company don’t charge very expensive (like Canon L lens) and still can optically perform like L and ED lens. Your lens many people like me can afford to buy! I have great pictures and also very super fast AF, and very accurate. I also like your SIGMA service people, they are very professional and always do the best for SIGMA customers like me.
Same like what Sky_Walker said, without the very well made and large range variety offered by your company, like your 20mmF1.8, and the speciality lens 24mm f1.8 MACRO, Nikon users will have to change camera systems!
And guess what? now there is more reason to get SIGMA lens because they just announced their new DN lenses for micro 4/3 and for Sony NEX mirrorless camera systems! Way to go and BANSAI, SIGMA!!
