New Sony 24 MP sensor gets DxOmarked (via D600 test).

The D600 score by DxOmark (Click here)
May not everybody knows it but the new Sony 24 Megapixel Full Frame sensor is used not only by Sony (A99, RX1 and VG900) but also by the Nikon D600 (in stock today). And DxOmark (Click here) already posted the results of the D600 sensor test. The results are impressive. Compared with the Canon 5DmarkIII the Sony sensor has an image dynamic that is nearly 2.5-stops better! And a 2/3-stop advantage in color quality too!
This means that 1) Canon should be worried 2) We can expect similar extraordinary results on the A99, RX1 and VG900. Particularly the superb RX1 (specs and price here) may surpass the Nikon D600 score due the excellent Zeiss lens. I hope it can dethrone the D600 as leader of the Amazon ranks (here to see).
I updated the preorder list with the new BHphoto Sony lens preorder option Here it is:

St.
9 months ago |@ ADMIN:
Dude, you should name this blog ANTI-NIKON rumors. Seriously!
I don’t understand where all these negative emotions towards Nikon come from?
I read this site quite a lot and wanted to ask you this question many times.
It seems Nikon and Sony have better relationship, than you can approve?!
Before you classify me as a “Nikon fan boy” I want to tell that I have D800, NEX-7 and NEX-C3 at the moment. I like each of them for any reason and not like them for another reasons. But in general they all are amazing cameras. Sony has amazing technology today and I am looking forward to expand my camera bag with few more things from Sony. But it’s silly to write against Nikon all the time. They have awesome cameras too. If not the best out there.
I understand the competitive tone, but it sounds more than that… not sure if that’s what you aim at.
Kevin Alpha
9 months ago |I don’t see anything called Anti-Nikon here, it’s just “May the best camera win”.
St.
9 months ago |I’m not talking only about this particular article, but in general.
The admin will get my point.
I don’t intend to argue with anybody here.
Kevin Alpha
9 months ago |Easy easy, I’ve seen many many people jumping ship from Canon to Sony including me, but rarely anybody from Nikon, Nikon is good, except they don’t have Carl Zeiss AF glass, that’s my concern
this website gives very neutral information about technology in each system not Sony system only, so readers can do comparison.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |erm… no offense to anyone, but honestly: i wouldn’t expect lots of objective informations from site with “sony alpha” in title. Though I agree – comparing to some other websites, especially from Nikon (sites known to produce Sony haters), it’s very much OK. Criticizing when criticism is due, celebrating when great things happen.
Allan Olesen
9 months ago |So you think that the admin will get your point when you post your complaint in the comments to a story which does not contain one single word of anti-Nikon writing?
I don’t think so.
Everlast66
9 months ago |St. simply can not get over the fact that Nikon are using Sony made sensors. There is a remedy for this and it is called Sony gear! After his first NEX he will feel much better and the future will seem so much brighter …
I still believe that Nikon gear produces the best colours in the industry, but there should be no mercy for companies that are trying to protect the status quo and dragging their feet to innovation (refer to the 1 system).
Sky_walker
9 months ago |“I still believe that Nikon gear produces the best colours in the industry”
oh… really….
Rick
9 months ago |Sony’s colors are much better than Nikon IMHO.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Anti-nikon? All I see here is Anti-Canon if anything at all… it’s quite normal that some of us want Sony gear succeed cause this means quicker growth and that’s what we want.
It’s hardly anti-nikon page. Unless you think that every claim of Nikon having Sony sensor means it’s anti-nikon site, lol.
J
9 months ago |Obviously he is referring to saying that a Nikon body has a Sony sensor…blasphamy!
sergei
9 months ago |I wonder what would Nikon users feel like when Nikon produced the best sensors for Sony and not use them in their Nikon cameras for half a year or more. Of all the cool full frame sensors Sony made lately it is the first they used in their own camera A99 and we still have to wait ANOTHER MONTH before we can lay our hands on one!!! I do like Nikon, but it doesn’t have the tilt screen I often use, nor the 135mm F1.8 I adore.
Wheelus
9 months ago |If anything, it’s anti-Canon, not anti-Nikon.
Norman
9 months ago |dxo mark is worth a sh*t.. go print your normalized 8MP files….
Frank
9 months ago |8mpix will get you 8.5×11 inches at 300dpi and a lot larger at a lower dpi. How many prints do YOU do larger than that?
8mpix is plenty for the vast majority of prints and therefore a valid figure for DxO to normalise at. They have to pick a figure and stick to it for reasons you don’t appear to be able to comprehend…
Peksu
9 months ago |There’s a button that allows you to choose between normalized and absolute measurements…
Steve
9 months ago |So far so good!
Now let’s see what happens with the a99 and SLT!
Mojoe
9 months ago |Wow, according to dxo the low-light-capabilities are ( very very slightly) better, than on the D4.
That’s amazing!
passer-by
9 months ago |Because D4 sensor is not from Sony. Low noise in high ISO is one of the strengths of Sony sensor.
Robin Edgar
9 months ago |The results for the Nikon D600 are very impressive, they almost match those for the top-ranked Nikon D800. In fact the D600 actually has slightly better low light performance, as might be expected from the lower pixel count and thus correspondingly larger pixel pitch. That being said, it is unlikely that the Sony Alpha A99 SLT camera will achieve the same high DXOMark score as the Nikon D600, if only because it is an SLT with a fixed mirror that “eats up” a good chunk of an “f stop”. . .
Spoon
9 months ago |The difference between the D800 and D600 in terms of SNR is 0.06 EV. In the case of the D800E vs D600 a whopping 0.0005 EV. Now realize the measuring error is 0.33 EV and you know pixel size is an irrelevant factor.
Rick
9 months ago |But it produces those results with just 66% of the pixels, not starting a flame war, just saying.
Spoon
9 months ago |Again, that’s rather irrelevant for these results. Less but larger pixels, the end result being comparable: surface.
What DXOmark doesn’t weigh in their sensor ratings, is resolution. Which obviously is a parameter worth considering for many.
Maxwell
9 months ago |So the best Sony camera is a Cyber Shoot?
Patrick
9 months ago |Indeed
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Depends how you define the best.
If DXO is one telling you what’s the best then yea, RX got a huge chance to gain best score of all Sony cameras.
For me however DXO score is just one of very many aspects in a camera. Certainly not the most important one.
d00d00
9 months ago |Are you sure it’s the same sensor? According to DPR preview specs….
D600 Sensor Size: 35.9x24mm
D600 Max Res: 6016×4016
A99 Sensor Size: 35.8×23.8MM
A99 Max Res: 6000×4000
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Nikon: no-IS
Sony: electronic IS.
See the difference?
Seeky
9 months ago |How do you know that the electronic steady shot only uses 16 pixels horizontally and vertically? It doesn’t sound much to me? And isn’t the video recording taking place while cropping a certain amount to account for IS?
Sky_walker
9 months ago |No
That’s not what I mean. It can use different area, but so Nikon could have asked Sony for a greater (or smaller) frame coverage. Camera exact pixel count doesn’t tell anything about using this or the other sensor.
Ashuaria
8 months ago |Not only that.
The A99 sensor has a phase detection AF in the main sensor..
RX1 may have the same sensor to D600. which lacks phase detection AF in the main sensor and no Image Stability(maybe it’s called SSS)
Allan Olesen
9 months ago |Perhaps the figures for one camera is the full surface with all pixels, while for the other camera it is only the part of the surface which ends up as a jpg image.
There is always some pixels difference between these two values because some extra pixels are need along the edges for the debayering algorithm (if I have understood it correctly).
Steve
9 months ago |Yes the best camera score will be the RX1…
Wow, if Sony would just get off its thumbs and make a truly professional mirrorless camera with lenses, just think!
Mike
9 months ago |Well, those differences are all within measuring tolerances I would say. Basically, the D600 is as good as the D800. The A99 will score a little lower, but not much.
Cliff
9 months ago |“hopefully”!!
Steve
9 months ago |The D600 looks to be a great camera for working professionals on a budget
Having access to all of the Nikon lenses and other gear and third-party stuff not available to Sony shooters
Frank
9 months ago |Certainly a second body/backup.
Cliff
9 months ago |OK,…so far so good. When they review the A99, then we will really see what Nikon does with processing and what Sony does. Even more important, the comparison will speak volumes about SLT vs. SLR.
Whoooo Weeeee! I cant wait to see these two cameras compared!
Cliff
Frank
9 months ago |There are already comparisons between SLR/SLT on DxO. You can even compare SLR/SLT/Mirrorless right now, they all have the same Sony sensor.
Arize
9 months ago |Does anyone know if the A99 will have better dynamic range than the 5DMKIII given the translucent mirror. I need to upgrade from my MKII and I’m really torn on which way to go. Being able to recover dark shadows in LR is a really important part of editing process.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |Yep, it’s very possible. SLT influences ISO performance. DR can be lower in Sony camera as Sony usually uses stronger AA filters and color separation then Nikon does, but I think that even despite of this Sony will outmatch 5D mk 3. Plus Sony doesn’t have an ugly artifacts when pulling out shadows or highlights.
Booe
9 months ago |SLT mirror doesn’t affect DR at minimal ISO in any way. Yes, as same ISO DR gets worse, but it shifts minimal ISO too.
Spoon
9 months ago |True for “real” ISO’s, but since the extra gain (to compensate) isn’t reflected by the nominal ISO’s, all else being equal, the DR at the minimal nominal ISO will be lower. But Sony was smart enough with the A77 to offer a lower nominal ISO (50) to compenate and they did that again with the A99.
Spoon
9 months ago |Most likely. I’d expect up to 2 stops difference in measured DR and more in practise due to the fact that these numbers don’t even reflect the visible impact of pattern noise (banding) in the Canon, which restricts the usable DR more than the numbers suggest.
TinoXcaliber
9 months ago |Remenber their still other differences on that sensor, like AF pixel (or whatever they are called), AA filter and micro lenses.
Cliff
9 months ago |The micro lenses are not sold with the sensor?
TinoXcaliber
9 months ago |Exacly, what I mean is that Sony develop the same sensor even further taking in account the loss of light from the mirror. Obiusly I am not specting the same resolts, but a think it is going to be iqual or better than the 5D3.
Booe
9 months ago |It’s evident even now: at high ISOs 5DMkIII is better in both SNR and DR, at moderate and low ISOs same SNR but less DR than A99, because Canon’s noisy amplifiers-ADCs ruin everything.
Saber
9 months ago |Some of you already know that I’m considering switching to the other side, but I honestly would love to stay IF the A99 makes a good showing. I have my fingers crossed and my hopes are high!
I’m still shocked by just how little information is currently out regarding the A99′s performance. The reviews thus far are remarkably skimpy given its release and pre-order status. I guess Sony couldn’t beg, borrow or pay enough professionals to review this thing. I remain hopeful just the same ~
tony
9 months ago |O is this the first time you didn’t mention you owned an a900?
kebo
9 months ago |i saw Saber’s post in dpreview by the name of Dan Ortego. Like always, he talks about his A900 amd the glass with the blue logo. =)
lollo
9 months ago |What do you mean with the other side?
Are you pondering of becoming gay?
Saber
9 months ago |You know, it’s this infantile childish behavior that turns potential Sony customers off. I do belong to other more respectable forums whereby nobody would ever consider remarks like this. Seemingly, the apparent age here is 16~18 years old and immature ones’ at that! I get it that some of you don’t necessarily care for my input but for the sake of the Sony badge I would think you would want to project a better image.
Now, I do realize that I’m likely wasting my time by typing this, but for the majority of contributors whom are adults or simply mature young people, I compose. Take care my fellow photographers and so long SonyAlpha Rumors.
Regards,
poke
9 months ago |What side are you considering? I preordered the 99. I really think or hope this will be a great performing camera. I love the EVF. THe SLT benefit may have more cons than positives, but the jury is still out on that. I once thought about changing, but it was to go to the 5DM3, but for the price the 600 may be the better choice. If I was to choose between those two camps it would have been Canon, but am glad I did not change because today it would be Nikon now. However, I am noticing the grass is not always greener in other pastures and am content being invested in the Sony camp for now. I hope the 99 scores are better than the 5dm3 now. Overall score 85 low light 2100 if nothing more than a morale victory for the 99. I cannot wait. Hoping and praying for an early release. Will we see a DXO score before the release date?
Ferdinand
9 months ago |And what does sony has to do with this comment?
If this turns you away from sony, than please go.
Other camera makers only have honorable trolls.
Seeky
9 months ago |Saber, realize that you are above those people in terms of dignity and behavior, however, you have to deal with people wherever you are.
The A99 will be good enough, regardless all crappy previews so far, so there’s no need to sell your Zeiss glass at a very good price though. Only make a decision after holding and using the A99 yourself.
Si
9 months ago |Saber, you continued remarks to go to the other side will naturally bring comments like this and unless you either step over the fence or shut up you will get more and more comments like this doh!!!

9 months ago |I don’t see a picture of a Sony camera in the headline pic, only Nikon & Canon.
The title should probably read:
“It’s a Nikon designed, Nikon tweaked sensor manufactured by Sony on Nikon Precision-supplied equipment. Nikon merely farms out the production process.”
Patrick

TinoXcaliber
9 months ago |The VG900 is looking really good for video work, and you can use any lens you want.
Cliff
9 months ago |possibly so, but whew, taking 24 million pixels and tossing out 22 million is brutal. The pixel “hit vs. miss” ratio is pretty bad.
The initial raw video that I’ve seen from the A99 show lot’s of moire in the fine details. I have no idea how they are going to fill in those gaps in the VG900.
Nico
9 months ago |Remember, Nikon doesn’t just use the Sony chip, they specify certain parts that are just for them and then the rest is their internal processing. You can hope the Sony fares as well, but the past should teach us something. I’m also hoping for a good showing so i don’t have to switch systems.
The D600 isn’t a good choice though, no external flash sync port and a 1/200 max flash sync speed. Bad for those that shoot daylight w/ flash…1/200 makes your flash less powerful by allowing to much ambient in.
spaceman
9 months ago |I know Nikon is doing everything to show their community that they develop their sensor themselves (they probably even have Sony make a custom sensor connections to meet Nikon requirements), but how do we explain identical DxOMark score of the 24Mpx APS-C cameras from Sony and Nikon (NEX-7 and D3200)??
Where else would Nikon get such high performing sensors for the D800 and 600 from??
Sky_walker
9 months ago |But it’s obvious! They MADE IT THEMSELVES!
on the dark side of the moon… you know, out there where’s a secret nazi base.
Stephen Linhart
9 months ago |But the RX1 is not exactly the same sensor is it? Isn’t the RX1 a sensor without Phase Detection? That could mean it’s not Sony’s best sensor, or it could mean the image quality is even better…
paul1508
9 months ago |The 100 AF Points from the 24.000.000 won’t make a difference. The missing mirror does.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |I’m quite sure that Sony can produce this sensor with or without PDAF points easily.
sholky
9 months ago |I trusted dxomark until I tried the 5D Mark III.
Try using it, and then tell me that those figures for dynamic range are accurate. No way.
And dpreview agrees with me:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii/19
Denis
9 months ago |Dpreview “tests” are for dumbs. So, I can congratulate you
sholky
9 months ago |How much time have you spent using the Mark III?
Denis
9 months ago |I did a couple of shots with this thing, nice AF, too bad for canon DSLRs are doomed to death, and it will happen very soon
Back to the topic: I don’t need to use a camera to realize its technical limitations. From what I have got with RAW files, the D600 seems to be better than even D4 (which is better than 5d3): http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1148707/0#10965936
Someone mentioned the imaging resource doesn’t control lightning conditions well, but this dxo comparison shew its not far from truth. Direct comparison with 5d3 files is pointless, because real iso values of canons are usually significantly smaller than ones of nikons.
Randy S.
9 months ago |So the mostly highly used Camera in News Papers and sports with billions and billions in Lens libraries at these places is doomed?
Denis
9 months ago |And what? Some time ago RF cameras where the mostly used ones as well, but this didn’t save them. Same will happen with SLRs. The sooner, the better.
Kevin B.
9 months ago |I have the 5d mark 3 and all I can say is Sony has some shoes to fill to meet this camera’s IQ, I want Sony to have a great FF, I sold my 7d and got a A77, now it is wait and see, But I can tell you the low light high iso of the 5d3 is awesome… (real world)
danny
9 months ago |Same here, the JPEG’s at imaging-resource from 5DIII look much better, less noise and sharper. The D600 may have a good sensor but as I’ve seen so many times, the JPEG’s from Nikon are not good.
DxOMark figures mean nothing to me.
Denis
9 months ago |Right, canon jpgs are better for sure. And nikon seems to cripple their firmware in order for D600 jpgs to look not better than D4
Sky_walker
9 months ago |I still can’t understand why one should shoot JPG anyway. I got A77 – it creates huge RAW files and yet… I use them nearly all the time.
Seriously… why spend wayyy over 1000$ on camera then wayyy over 1000$ on lenses and… shoot in a format that doesn’t use even 50% of your camera potential?!
It’s like buying Leica re-branded Pans compact – just to show-off, without an real value.
Frank
9 months ago |If you have a meet a deadline or are on the road and don’t have anything to pp on, then I can understand the need for good jpeg output. Indeed if jpeg output was close to LR4 output, then I’d shoot jpeg.
Spoon
9 months ago |You want visual proof? Here’s your visual proof:
http://www.fredmiranda.com/5DIII-D800/index_controlled-tests.html
And don’t get me started on the Dpreview “dynamic range” measurements. Those are jpeg TONE curves. Which is not nearly the same, just a way of cooking jpeg files. Nowhere close to the dynamic range offered by the sensor (RAW), because the jpeg format alone limits the available range. Pushing shadows from RAW files after shooting a wide DR scene, that’s where the differences become massive, see the fredmiranda article.
Kevin Alpha
9 months ago |this sounds interesting, the D600 doesn’t have EVF and doesn’t lose any light to the sensor, it’s worth keeping an eye on it while I’m waiting for the A85 version.
Frank
9 months ago |If you want an OVF, Sony isn’t for you. Just swap now.
Ozcan
9 months ago |Sony should stop produce SLT cameras. Just focus produce sensor and NEX cameras. Sony sensor is good but DSLR engineering is terrible. A99 and D600 has same sensor but not same quality. Most people says A99 is moire and anti aliasing hell… So i think sony has to stop produce DSLRs.
Daniel
9 months ago |SLTs are not DSLRs. The technology is getting a LOT better and I think in time, the SLT technology will be better than what is achievable with DSLR. Sony’s viewfinders are so good that you’d mistake them for optical – they are moving out to other cameras too. Its not long before fully electronic takes over. If the other parties still want to hold onto optical technologies they are only going to be catering to those that resist change. I think however that the full body design will simply migrate over to larger direct-to-sensor design, removing any mirror. Sony’s tech is quite a bit ahead of its competition.
Denis
9 months ago |SLT technology will disappear soon.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |perhaps yes, perhaps no. Either way – A-mount cameras ain’t going anywhere, and Sony keeps on developing them, which is very good cause they got great ergonomics and colors way ahead of anything Nikon can offer.
Besides – it increases competition, and every competition is a good thing!
Si
9 months ago |SLT and mirror less is to stay, OVF will go for sure but when, 5 or 10 years who is to say? It will be the only way forward one day that is for sure.
Si
Frank
9 months ago |Nope, not “soon”. There is a long way to go to get the required large on-sensor AF performance that a SLT AF module gives you.
When it happens SLT *and* flappy mirrors will go. The advantage Sony has is that they are ahead with EVF technology, so will be selling that to CaNikon too.
poke
9 months ago |I am trying to read everything on the 99 and do not get the impression you are coming up with. The only moire issue I have heard of is with a grill of a car for video. The high ISO performance that I have seen has been stellar. THe best Sony has done above 16Mpix.
Rick
9 months ago |@Ozcan Really? You “hear” about moire and that’s your conclusion – kill the SLT. All I’ve seen is the Aston Martin grille – and that was a pre-production camera that was really poorly shot. Though production models likely will exhibit some moire and aliasing. Remember there’s only 2.1mp in 1080p video, so all cameras with higher resolution have to resort to some sort of downscaling to shoot video. I see moire in pretty much every camera – including all – yes ALL – DSLR’s. Its really bad in the D800 and its so bad in the Canon that Mosaic makes a replacement OLPF to help cut down on the problem. I would wait for full tests before judgement, instead of making blanket statements on a tiny sample size of pre production images. So far its looks pretty controlled on the A99 IMHO.
I pre-ordered so I can test myself.
Ozcan
9 months ago |It’s not just about video. Also photo is not impressed. Yes SLT has more benefits but A99 image quality not like A900 or other sony sensor cameras like D600 or D800. So it’s about SLT technology. I hope i’m wrong when people test it.
Rooru S.
9 months ago |Wow, the diferences between the D600 and D800 aren’t that much given the lower pixel count..maybe the saying of higher pixel count lower performance isn’t true after all..by a low margin, the 24MP tops the 36MP in some aspects, I was expecting a bigger gap.
passer-by
9 months ago |That’s a symptom of [mega]pixel phobia, hahahaha…
MooW
9 months ago |Now that D600 is really impressive. Uses the same sensor. OK. If the A99 is as good. I will just jump straight in. I really would love Sony to have good ISO performance. But as seen. Their camera hardly go beyond 2000. not to mention 2980 of D600. The A900 ISO rating on this DXO marking is really pathetic too.
I have a 24-70 Zeiss and is using it with my NEX currently. I really wish they can make a good ISO performance so i can finally use it the “right way” Come on A99..im waiting
Sky_walker
9 months ago |“The A900 ISO rating on this DXO marking is really pathetic too.” – Yea, I have no idea what’s up with that. I seen amazing high-ISO shots pulled from RAWs in Lightroom 3 or DxO – heck, even seen almost a 2m tall print of a shot made at ISO3200 – I was stunned how clear it was.
Guess DxO ratings for ISO don’t tell the whole story!
Patrick
9 months ago |BOOM BITCH! yeehaw~!
Rick
9 months ago |Those numbers are simply stunning, makes me feel pretty damn good about my A99 pre-order. not surprisingly the low light is superior to the D800 because of the lower pixel density. I wish the A99 was shipping.
Marc
9 months ago |Fuck DxO this is no real life comparision. It is just plain stupidness!
Frank
9 months ago |Yeah that happens a lot when people don’t like the results.
Kevin Alpha
9 months ago |Another concern with SLT technology is battery life, I don’t understand why Sony has too many new technologies in the camera but battery technology is still the same, A99 still uses same A900 battery with 1/2 less shots than the A900. I DONT GET IT!
Sky_walker
9 months ago |That’s why they give you option to use 3 batteries at a time. To compensate at least a little bit.
And even with 1 battery – it’s not really an issue unless you shoot with build-in flash all the time.
Si
9 months ago |Thats why SD cards are the order of the day for the A99 and XCD are not!!!!!
Si
Frank
9 months ago |Battery life isn’t the problem people make out. The rated battery life includes the use of the on-board flash. My A77 gives me twice as much as the quoted figure in reviews. It’s complete bollocks.
AG
9 months ago |Nikon is doing great things with Sony sensors. Canon cannot afford to not update the 5D Mark III sensor for another 3 years. That strategy is just not going to work anymore.
lollo
9 months ago |Watch and learn….
Canon will not change the mark III sensor at all.
AuthenticAMD
9 months ago |Are you sure the D600 is a Sony sensor? The rumors also say it is made by Aptina Imaging.

9 months ago |You gotta give credit to Nikon on shipping this product within a week’s time of the announcement.

9 months ago |I know, Nikon announced and delivered in a week. Nikon has released 2 or is it 3 FF’s to Sony’s 1. I want my 99.

9 months ago |That just means they could have announced it three weeks earlier. I guess if Sony announced a camera on Monday and it was for sale on Tuesday you’d be really impressed?
Nah, it just means that it COULD have been announced a month ago.

9 months ago |What’s strange is the Canon and Nikon camps respectively seem to dis-like their own entry-level FF models. Some sort of blasphemy.
I think Sony should be aware of this phenomenon and perhaps just focus on a proper FF NEX, so people expect smaller, lighter, different build.
(not Hasselbad style though)

9 months ago |The future seems to be mirrorless once the focusing issue is resolved. Put the system in an Alha Mount and I am on board. It appears SOny is a leader in this area and if they work closely with Nikon who seems to have a faster accurate focusing system in the mirrorless arena it will be great for both companies.

Marc
9 months ago |As soon as they get a 99 or probably even some money????
Spoon
9 months ago |Not sure why we should expect better numbers from the RX1 because of a lens…
The lens really doesn’t change much for *these* scores.
Rick
9 months ago |The AA filter might be very different since its can be tuned to just one lens.
Spoon
9 months ago |The AA filter affects sharpness, moiré etc., not so much these scores. And before anyone brings up the D800 and D800E ==> well within measuring error.
saiman
9 months ago |Better micro-lens calibration.
And, RX1 will certainly be better than A99… no mirror.
Spoon
9 months ago |See above and I was replying to the comment comparing the RX1 and D600.
Art
9 months ago |Dxomark does not measure lens, resolution, sharpness or anything like that. RX1 might even score slightly lower due to congested wires close to sensor and heating.
Andy
9 months ago |I don’t like the way Dxomark pick and choose which camera results they want to publish.
Why have they not published canon 1dx and fuji x pro 1 results? These cameras have been around for a while now and from what I’ve read, great performers.
I don’t think dxo results are incorrect per se, but there’s definitely a nikon bias to the cameras they publish.
Spoon
9 months ago |Maybe because Nikon currently supplies cameras ASAP, where as Canon doesn’t and I wouldn’t be in a hurry to throw close to 7k over the counter either.
That being said, I remember how they even tested a pre production model of one of the Rebels and again when it was final. I didn’t hear a pro Canon bias claim back then.
Frank
9 months ago |Maybe Canon aren’t willing to offer up cameras for testing against Nikon? I wonder why…
passer-by
9 months ago |Because they already know the result… and they don’t like it?
Tess
9 months ago |sony uses 24MP full-frame CMOS Sensor with on-chip phase detection AF,
Nikon use 24.3MP Full-frame CMOS sensor without PD-AF.
They are really the same sensors? Has Nikon switched off the PD-AF? Or means the 0,3MP more MP that they are not on board?
pancanikonpus
9 months ago |Is not really 1st time nikon uses sony sensor in their dslr. Without Paul (Octopus) speculation in D600/D800 vs A99 in ISO performance, extremely slim chances Sony will surpass nikon in ISO performance.
All-in my chips on D600 nikon!

9 months ago |I really truly lust for an a99 now.
Bummer
9 months ago |if the D600′s low-light noise is 2900+ per DXo. Given the same sensor (with and without PDAF). I expect the A99 and RX1′s low-light noise performance to be at least 2300+ (gotta some credits to Nikon’s algorithms for noise processing). Still disappointed how A77 low-light noise didn’t break 1000.
Spoon
9 months ago |The Rx1 *and* A99? The A99 loses about half a stop, which means around 2000.
Ario
9 months ago |I’m expecting a99 to score 92-93, that’s gooooodddd…

9 months ago |How about EXPEED3 in D600 and Bionze in RX1 and A99?
Perhaps a processor ifself plays very important roles in those scores.

9 months ago |The proof that D600 have Sony sensor ?
Because D600 and A99 sensor have 0.1mm size difference, and when i see D600 and D800 DxO result i’m very surprising D800, with 50% pixels more, be better than D600.
Are you sure D600 don’t have a Nikon Sensor ??
Roy
9 months ago |Don’t waste your time. It doesn’t matter who make this sensor. What matters is the final output.
For mirrorless, I choose NEX. For FF DSLR, I choose Nikon. To me, Sony is the best sensor maker whereas Nikon is the best DSLR inventor. Nikon knows very well how rip off the best performance from each sensor they use. Also, I admit that their latest EXPEED processor is superb indeed.

9 months ago |Nikon D600 using Sony sensor is yet to be confirmed.
All we know so far that D800 uses Sony sensor, D4 has Nikon’s own sensor
Alexey Ozerov
9 months ago |I dont know. Every time I see this test i think that there is misplacing and under D800 is results of Mark3 – lowlight is simply unreal. And after that I couldnt trust any more to DXOmarks tests.
Spoon
9 months ago |They are both about the same in low light, as reflected by the SNR curves and confirmed by Dpreview.
J Barry
9 months ago |No surprises here. As been said here before, the same sensor generation produces similar results (on DxO). A99′s SLT is likely to place ISO performance very close to 5D Mk III. But Sony did mention that A99′s sensor is ‘special’. We shall see.
Also looking forward to learn how A99′s AF perform.
DG
9 months ago |Are we sure that the A99 has same kind of sensor? If so, considering the loss of light to sensor due to the translucent mirror, A99 will be atleast 90% as good D600 in ISO. Which is good considering A99 has much more other features/capabilities than D600 or a 5D M3….

9 months ago |When should we here some previews on the 99. The information regarding the 99 seems to have run dry of late. Will we have to wait after its release?

8 months ago |Nikon D600 has the second best sensor in the world. The first is the Nikon D800. Good news. It is a Sony sensor? And so what? It is OK! Photocameras are just TOOLS. The Nikon D600 with a Sony-sensor makes better photos than the 5Dmk3, and better photos than the D700, that is all. The corporate identity of Nikon is very good. With or wihtout sony-sensor. But with Sony-sensor the imagy-quality has a NEW STANDARD, new high level. Even HASSELBLAD now use to put sony-sensors into HASSELBLAD-CAMERAS.
Patrick
8 months ago |The Nikon D3200 has scored 81 points(DXO Sensor Score), like the big 5Dmk3. The D800 is the best, and the D600 is the second best. In the top ten, there is not one Canon-camera. The nikon D3200 is an aps-c camera, the Canon 5Dmk3 is a FF camera. What does this mean?? That means: EVEN THE LITTLE ONE OF NIKON SISTERS(Nikon D3200) IS BETTER THAN the BIG ONE OF CANON SISTERS(5Dmk3). That means: today Nikon is MUCH better than Canon. Here there is not much to interpret. Canon is decadent. Nikon is the number one. Whit Sony sensor. But that’s ok. Nikon is Nikon also with a Sony-sensor.

8 months ago |Nikon D600, the 2nd best sensor ever tested.
Nikon D600, record high dynamic range.
Nikon D600, 1/3EV low-light ISO proress over the Nikon D700 in spite of th edoubled megapixel count.
The Nikon D600 beats the Canon EOS 5D Mark III : +2.5EV ore DR, 1.1 bit color depth and a slight advantage of 1/3EV in low light.
Of course the D600 is the BEST DSRL in the world, after the D800.

8 months ago |Unfortunately the same sensor does not mean the same result. We have seen Sony sensors in Nikons before, and they never got the same score. The Expeed thingy, the filters etc count in too.

6 months ago |Good points, if only someone from Sony actually goes through forums and comments to take notes
Especially now that they want to be No.1
