New Sony A77 video review by Digitalrev.
Kai from Digitalrev posted the video on top. As you know the Sony A77 is now available in some Asian and European stores. There are also some first reports about bugs and issues. I am currently investigating that. The good news is that it looks like most issues can be solved via firmware upgrade. So don’t panic, it’s normal that new cameras need to be fixed in time

8 months ago |let me translate a little (original in cantonese):
今日試用左半日,發現幾項問題:
Tried the camera for half a day, found some problems:
1.用picture style既移軸效果時,部相機process到hang左機,要換第二張SD card先至正常返(Sandisk Extreme HD 32G>16G)
1. when tried to use the “shift effect” on picture style, the camera hang in the middle of processing, i need to change to another SD card before this situation stop happening (Sandisk Extreme HD 32G>16G).
From Yong: shift effect? whats that? is that in picture style? Not in A700 or A55 that i know off.
2.光圈快門有時會拍拍下突然失靈,要抆電池開機先郁得返
2. The shutter sometimes became unusable, i need to take out the battery and reinsert before it goes back normal
3.呢個最常出現,就係個水平尺拍拍下野會走左上去,即係本來應該晌畫面既正中間,變左晌中間三個對焦點既上面果點果度,要熄機再開先正常返
3. This happened the most, even if the leveling indication will goes up to the screen after few snaps, it should be in the middle, but it moved to above the 3 AF points in the middle, , i need to turn off the camera and turn back on.

8 months ago |That is normal teething pains with a new camera line. This is the first pro/semi-pro of the line with a lot of tech that has never appeared before on an SLT. There are bound to be technical issues that can be resolved by firmware upgrades.
Remember when the Leica M8 was introduced? The whole black synthetics look magenta issue? Leica went so far as to give users free IR Cut filters to workaround the problem until they fixed it in the M9. Sony has much deeper pockets than Leica.

It’s definitely worrying seeing as some have lost the ability to take a picture or even turn on the camera. Not much use then >_< Hopefully it is just firmware.

8 months ago |True to form, Kai has released another misleading review here. (First it was the manual focus comparison video where he intentionally misled about how long it takes to find the peaking level function in the menu system of the NEX-3C).
This time, Kai has spent a great deal of time criticizing the delay in switching from the screen to the EVF by means of the eye sensor. What he fails to mention is that the a77 can be manually configured (through an obvious hardware button “LCD/Finder” in the usual place) to remain on EVF or LCD. Since his shooting style is to hold at waist level and then quickly bring the viewfinder to eye level for a candid shot, he should have set the EVF on instead of relying on the eye sensor detection, which probably has a lag built-in to prevent a sudden switch due to an accidental finger swipe. Considering the time he spent belaboring the point, I suspect it was a wild grab.
Also, the video begins with an odd criticism of the form factor, but he then goes on to praise the rubber grip.
All this goes to show that when a camera company sends a review model to DigitalRev for appraisal, in some cases they will be better off to grab a black marker and try to remove the branding.

8 months ago |He was mistaken in some ways, but all in all, he was quite kind to the a77; dare I say fairer than most of the reviews to date even? I said it elsewhere already, but he seemed quite humbled and impressed by it. Gotta love his reaction to the screen at 2:42 anyway
Not to mention he had high praise of the EVF overall, and the burst, and the ISO capabilities (unlike some reviewers we know *cough*).
Ben
8 months ago |Yeah, he looked genuinely captivated by the articulating screen at the point you mentioned, and yes, he was comparatively kind to the a77, but I would chalk that up to the undeniable merits of the a77
robdel
8 months ago |How is this misleading? Sony offers it as a feature, and Kai points out it doesn’t work very well. The GH2 has a similar function and it essentially works without delay.
harpo
8 months ago |At least mention the option to run with the evf on full time. Balance the facts on both sides.
Ben
8 months ago |There is no doubting that the EVF is not switching on lightning fast. Perhaps this is general “sluggishness” of the a77 in handling the higher resolution screen and viewfinder, maybe something that can be remedied through firmware, or even a built-in delay to prevent accidental switching. Regardless, Kai focused on this auto-switching feature as if the camera offered no alternative, despite the fact that auto-switching can be disabled.
Nico Foto
8 months ago |Come on guys. Even if you could set the camera to always have EVF on, it will be wasting battery. For a camera that is competing in the semi pro range, where the EVF is key to the operation of the camera you would think something as basic as detecting when to turn it on / off should just work – as someone else said, the GH2 does it without hiccups. And what about the lag when changing aperture? That does look like something very annoying. Lets face it, the A77 will be challenging the EOS 7D and Nikon’s D7000, they can’t afford having these kind of basic operational handicaps.

His reviews are always more about his failed attempts at being funny than the functionality and performance of the cameras themselves. I find his complements to be equally as superficial as his criticisms.

8 months ago |Yes, Kai doesn’t have a lotta Sony Love, but one has to take a lighthearted approach to watching his videos. It’s interesting to see shots he did with the mirror up and down to realize how much light is being stolen.
Andrea has written about 3 new FF cams on the horizon. We have rumors of a 36MPx and 24MPx FF translucent cams, but I’m crossing my fingers that the 3rd camera will be a Mirrorless FF cam. Of course, the 3rd camera could be the 3-sensor “Full Color” camera Sony has been pumping patent filings for. But, the full color cam looks like it is still APS-C sized.
Terryfried
8 months ago |24MPxFF would be bigger mistake than 54MPxFF. it would be like a 10.5 MPxAPS-c and there is no evidence of any advantage to that All the best ar16MP so 36MPxFF is lowest you need for High ISO I for one would never consider 24MP FF but will be happy with A77. the rumours of a MF competitor would require more than 36MP. in same way more than 24MP APSC is not necessary for high def less than 16 in not needed for high ISO.
Erational
8 months ago |Err, you know the A850/A900 has 24.6MPx, right ? Personally, I don’t think 24MPx on those cameras was a ‘mistake.’ A lot of people on this site think the A850/A900 are pretty fine full-frame cameras.
Terryfried
8 months ago |We are talking new genaration. not what was right 3 or more years ago, its a thing called progress or we would all be still thinking 6MB was the best you can get.

8 months ago |I’m no Nikon fanboy, but someone keeps paying $5,000. for Nikon’s D3S 12 megapixel fullframe cameras. The market seems to be saying that lower level megapixels is just fine for a high-end camera. Would I buy such a camera ? No. The Sony A900 is better in good light.
To say a Sony 24MPx FF is too few pixels just seems odd. The A65/A77 is already suffering from diffraction effects above F/8 due to such tiny, packed photo-sites on the sensor (tunneling effect). I don’t know how many megapixels it takes to reach the rate of diminishing returns with poor low-light/ noise ratings in the new full frame cameras due next year, but, I assume we will find out. I don’t subscribe to the belief of yours that 3 years later we need to have a higher megapixel Sony FF camera. What would be progress to me would be better high-ISO/noise characteristics over the current A850/A900 FF cameras.
If all that matters to someone is megapixels, Canon is rumored to be coming out with a 57MPx FF cam next year. Perhaps you should jump ship, friend.
Terryfried
8 months ago |Read and listed don’t just react. Every 3 years or so we move to more MP not because it is more important than high ISO sensitivity but because the point of diminishing returns on sensitivity has gone up. The 16MP apsc in the nex-5 Nikon d7000 etc has better low light than the 12 MP predecessors. The A77 beats the A700 in every department despite 24MP. Nikon will replace D3s and it will be with more pixels. As new APS-C have shown 16 MPs is NOW point of diminishing returns with low noise needed. that equates to no lower than 36MPxFF. as for Me Jumping ship to Canon that is nonsense as I said there IS an optimal range at any one time and I will be getting an A77 as I don’t need a FF costing2-3 times the cost. but would not anyway as like my thoughts on 36MP being min FF max (diminishing returns for bright light)is around 24MP apsc(as you pint out reaching diffraction limit) so 54MPxFF is around max needed I am not saying that should be only choice. Just that current Sony tech 36MPxFF for low light and 54MPxFF for bright light appear to be lower and upper limits of diminishing returns. So at least 1 of each seems logical.

8 months ago |without going to FF ISO was always going to be hard to improve. Why do people expect an APSC camera to be able to be noticibly better than every camera at everything and not cost FF prices the A77 is a great camera whose weakneses are that its no better than good apsc in high iso the canon 7D may be getting on but this is the first camera to beat it at everthing and it is still cheeper!

8 months ago |Davy, some people report that a77 starts (and switches off) slower than a550/a580. Do you experience this delay ?
Davy793
8 months ago |Nothing noticeable if tested without a lens, but when switching off the A77 with a lens attached, the lcd goes off immediately but the lens takes some time to power down. I suppose this will vary from lens to lens, must give it a try.

8 months ago |Davy, the most important thing I want to know is, does the a77 offer better images than the a580. I don’t want to know about high iso above 3200. I want to know do the images from tha a77 look ‘deeper’ than the a580. Are the images better exposed? The detail of the images, is it better than the a580? Have you compared a580 and a77 images side by side? Which camera shows more in the image?(dynamic range) Thank you.
Davy793
8 months ago |Will try to run a test tomorrow but at first glance the images from the A77 are brighter (more exposure) than the A580 – my attempt at setting the 2 cameras up (just before dusk)identically and using the same lens resulted in the A580 exposing at 1/45 and the A77 at 1/60, yet the A77 turned out lighter. I am not satisfied with the focusing of the latter and will try again tomorrow.
I did however notice this tendency towards lightness on Friday night when I was shooting with a flash gun.

8 months ago |Just completed a couple of quick shots of flowers in my garden using exactly the same settings on both cameras.
1. A77 is definitely brighter than A580 and this would appear to have improved definition and ensured no over-saturation of reds ( which has been a problem in the past with A580).
2. Definite improvement on camera shake – both shots taken on tripod but without remote. a580 has movement.
Taken with Sony 70-400mm G at 1/125 f/8

8 months ago |I wouldn’t expect to see any high ISO improvement over the A580. In fact it should be not quite so good because of the SLT mirror. 8 months ago |agreed, I watched this yesterday and cant believe that anyone would take his reviews seriously. He seems to think he’s funny in some way, but I’m sorry he’s not. I’m afraid that the gap between humor and idiocy has been well and truly crossed. I think this little boy needs to go away, grow up a bit and learn a little about presentation, product testing and photography along the way. From the outset he had the “oh, its a Sony” attitude, you cant do that with anything or any brand in product reviews. If your prejudice is that strong then you really, really SHOULD NOT REVIEW IT. It’s a bit like asking a member of the KKK to review Jesse Owens running ability….do you really think you’re going to get a true and useful reflection of the abilities of the review subject…I think not. In a professional review you start out from the only available viewpoint you have, the manufacturers press claims, then you see how it matches up to them. After that its inter-brand comparison and the same price point with tempered subjectivity – remember you’re comparing for people to make up their own minds, you should never TELL them what to buy. You only say or indicate that its crap if it really is unusable by design for the purpose for which its sold/promoted. Your attitude should be mianly positive throughout using phrases like “although not quite perfect, its better than previous product X which shows as a brand they’re improving” and only negative for well researched, demonstrable or quantifiable deficiencies. Its called professionalism and it stops you getting sued.
Some may like this type of thing but sorry, I found it a little juvenile for my tastes….or should I say crap! (see definition in previous paragraph).

8 months ago |I enjoy Kai’s reviews. They’re always unique and entertaining. It’s not like anyone will decide on a camera based on one review anyway, but I noticed that his reviews point out things that most don’t. Call it nitpicking, but for some people like me, it’s useful.
Sporeo
8 months ago |I’m with you. I don’t understand all the hate for Kai here. I’ve rolled my eyes at a lot of other reviews so far, and maybe Kai’s isn’t as in-depth here, but it’s a hands on review rather than a ‘clinical’ one. He’s likely [hopefully] going to review it more in a comparison against a competitor, too. I like that he has fun with it… But I guess it’s no laughing matter to some ಠ_ಠ
Honestly, his more negative points were hardly that bad, and he showed a lot of interest in the camera. Really just don’t get some people’s fury over it =P ‘Grr, he didn’t say the camera was total crap, screw him!’???
borissimo86
8 months ago |I think it’s because Kai is not afraid to have an opinion. He has a personality, so it’s either you love him or hate him. You’re right that he did point out some nice things about the a77: the excellent autofocus, the articulating screen, the EVF and the leveler, great dynamic range, good noise levels up to ISO 6400, high FPS, weatherproofing… so I see no reason to say he’s ignorant or incompetent based on a few negative remarks regarding the eye sensor or the translucent mirror. He’s not anti-Sony; just the people here are Sony fanatics.
Sporeo
8 months ago |Ya, I don’t think that people around here really watch many of his reviews. I’ve seen him make much more abrasive comments towards canikon and beyond. And to add to that, for every negative he had about one thing, he in turn had a positive for the same thing! Perhaps he was a little out of his element with a Sony that actually impressed him, and not quite as informed as he could have been, but goodness me… The positives he had far outweighed the few negatives he mentioned. Oh well… =P I really do hope he does a comparison review, as those are always his more critical ones. Then everyone will really have something to moan about! XD
Nico Foto
8 months ago |In fact his reviews are faaaaar more informative than many “techy” reviews out there that go on about a laundry list of features and test the camera in the kitchen (or at most, the backyard). He goes out with the camera to (oh! god forgive) the streets!!! And he actually shots stuff instead of brick walls…now, that’s idiotic, ain’t it?
Now, i understand you may not like him, he has a weird personality, and his reviews tend to ridiculize the gear sometimes…If you don’t like Kai, just don’t watch digital rev reviews and move on…
Ben
8 months ago |I actually find him quite amusing and I enjoy watching some of the lens comparison vids and others. It is certainly more interesting than watching someone stand in front of a camera reading off specs. I can also recognize when he is using sarcasm and humor and I not take everything he says literally. And he doesn’t hide the fact that he is a Nikon user so we know he has a preference or familiarity with those, but when a subjective and hard-to-quantify bias turns into a distortion of fact, I don’t think the humor gives him a get-out-of-jail-free card.
Sporeo
8 months ago |He’s a fan of Nikon and Leica primarily (so he said in one of his earliest vids). I don’t think he showed any sort of bias here (I know he loves to pick on Canon a fair bit though, but who doesn’t..?
). At least, I don’t recall him saying ‘yo Sony, I’mma let you finish but Nikon has one of the best cameras of all time’ lmao =P If by ‘distortion of fact’ you’re referring to the LCD/viewfinder thing, I don’t think it’s wrong for him to mention that there is lag present. Yes, it’s possible to turn off the LCD. Yes, you can flip it around and not rely on it that way, and he could have mentioned that (though it should be common knowledge), but it’s also just pointing out a fact to say it’s a tiny [miniscule] bit slower than we might expect if shooting that way.
Ben
8 months ago |For the people that frequent SAR, sure, we probably know about that option, but for those not familiar with Sony, it might turn them off. But you are right, it is not a huge thing. I was soured by the intentional distortion with the NEX video in the past so I went into the a77 video a little skeptical.

8 months ago |Clyde, it’s nice to have a non-technical view of the camera itself.
Here’s what I think – the quality of a photo is best judged NOT by a photography expert – but your average streetwalker.
Now, you can argue that the camera itself is best judged by an expert photographer, but this ‘expert’ is biased by his years of experience.
Have you noticed the DSLR (not SLR) sales figures? Throughout the last decade, they rise significantly. There are more and more amateur photographers out there, and they’re quite a good target audience for videos like this.

8 months ago |It is dubbed in spots, as a lot of commercial video, TV shows and stuff. I hate dubbed speaking, I find it distracting.
We need better recording tools and nose reduction software for our cams. Such as syncing remote mikes. Maybe after the sensor race mature a little; camera companies will work on good and simple audio. It has been said that audio is 2/3 of video; which I belive as I seem to look away half the time when watching a movie or tv.
I thought he gave a positive review of the camera. He mention that people would be uncomfortable with buying a SLT camera. I can only say I am considering the A65 but feel a little unconformable about the mirror. I heard if it get dirty it is a problem, etc. As well as very positive stuff such as it is much quieter (which is why I am considering one)and less shaking.
He also said it looked different then Nikon and Canon which it does. He did not say it was bad in that regard in fact stated something that it had good human engineering.
As an reviewer he is not for everyone. But he seems to get a lot of web traffic, which is what is all about. I like just looking at the city he shoots in, for me it is the main attraction. For real camera reviews the digitalkamera.de is easier for me to understand. But you really should try any camera yourself, as the most important part is how you interface with it. The best Image Quality is meaningless if you do not take the shot. I am lucky in that I can borrow or rent most Nikon or Sony. My friends will not let me use Canon in that I have a 30 year history of breaking them, coincidence I am sure.

我昨天買的A65再切掉電源回復到原來鏡頭的狀態(通常對焦時鏡頭會伸長,關機時會縮回),
The time that the lens turn back to the original position after i turn the power off on the A65 that i bought yesterday (normally the lens would extend a bit when u focus, and retract back to original position after u turn it off)
之前A55約只要2秒A65竟花了10秒才收回,請問大家的A65會這樣嗎?
It took only 2 secs on A55 but 10 secs on A65, is that normal on A65?
還有開機也要等2秒左右對焦點的畫面才會出來,不會我這台是簽王吧!
And it took about 2 secs before the focus point indicator appear after i turn it on, i couldnt be the lucky one!

) and a bit of insight of the camera and lenses that are available – far better than a Boring unboxing!!!

8 months ago |Anybody else putting off their purchase of the A77 then?
They started shipping in the UK last week and I was about to get one until the problems started rolling in.
Looks like it may be a couple of months before I buy one, if I bother at all…might wait until mid-2012 now to see if the A77 gets replaced.

8 months ago |Ok, I have just sent back my A77 to the shop and I have test a new A77…and it fell on me..eg..crash when I tried it in the shop…I have to go back again to the shop next time cos they run out of stock!!
After reading various Hong Kong (where I live) and Taiwan forum, here are the summary of few possibilities and factors that make the A77 crash ..or worst, not responsive even after taking the battery out and in again (my case )…and you guys should try to avoid it:
1. Not using an original Sony battery (eg. 3rd party battery) to switch on the camera.
2. Not using an original Sony lens , especially sigma…some stated that some old Minolta lens also caused the problem.
3. Try to switch off the camera while saving.
But Sony….sort them out please….sigh!

8 months ago |Guys, please stop arguing about this camera.
Take the time to think about how you will flood photo forums with samples of your mailbox, a cat, a tree, branch and other awful pictures a 2nd grader could do a 100x better than you. Just get to posting them at ISO 1600 and talk about how great the camera is, but just remember NEVER use it to take stunning pictures that make people think, make people feel something, and that are suitable for gallery or professional work. I mean a camera is for talking Tech Stuff, not for capturing images.
Meatheads.
PS. Take your A77, I will take my old A100 and still smoke 90% of you here in terms of lighting, composition, subject, etc, etc, etc.

8 months ago |Since you have no idea who your audience is, that is a rather arrogant claim.
Seeky
8 months ago |It may sound arrogant, but when you throw away the crap, he could be very right. Instead of arguing about this or that feature or flaw, and thereby wasting much time, people should better be improving their skills, since those determine image quality to a much bigger extent.

8 months ago |I’ve seen some of his reviews and all I can say is I never really liked this guy or the way he makes his reviews, he has an unprofessional way of delivering it which I really dont like, and he looks like a poser to me.
not trying to be mean her but his face looks all fucked up, its like a facial expression of a person eating a lemon slice except his is permanent.
Mike
8 months ago |The problem with his review is he didn’t spent alot of time with the camera and I’m assuming he didn’t even spent some time to read the manual that came with it, and plasticky?? he just insulted nikon because the texture of the camera is same with all other nikon cameras. Typical fanboy, next time release a review without the bias bullshit that you have.
