New Sony reviews (A580, A55, NEX-5, 85mm f/2.8 lens)
SAMSUNG NX100 vs SONY NEX5 from hyunmi kang on Vimeo. (UPDATE: The video is made by a Samsung fan! Keep that in mind when you view it.)
PhotoclubAlpha wrote a 7 page long, very detailed and honest new Sony A55 review (Compliments!): “The Alpha 55 actually replaces something which overlapped with my film cameras – the Dimage 7/A series – and also the various video cameras I owned five, ten or more years ago. The video function is also there in the NEX and the 580, but the A55 would be my first choice. It genuinely can track focus during video even with fast-moving subjects or changes of distance, and do so with all the lenses I can fit to it. It removes any need to own a further compact digital.”
Sony A55 vs Nikon D90 in RAW (Fotoactualidad)
PCworld tested the Sony A580 eBay: “The Alpha 580 is a very impressive camera that’s comfortable to shoot with, and well-designed. Supported by a robust collection of high-quality lenses, the camera is capable of delivering excellent image quality. What’s more, Sony is doing a good job of automating post-production processes like HDR and panoramic stitching directly in camera, turning these “high-end” features into usable, everyday consumer techniques.”
The bulgarian website photo-forum.net tested the new Sony 85mm f/2.8 lens.

2 years ago |Nice pics made with the 85/2.8 lens (although the site is not Russian but Bulgarian). I’m actually in two minds. Currently I shoot portraits with a beercan, which I find apt enough. Is it worth buying the 85/2.8?
kevin
2 years ago |I use a beercan to, and at 85mm, my copy is working at its best with plenty of sharpness wide open. I’ve got an 85mm SAM sitting under my Christmas tree just the same, for three reasons:
► The 85mm SAM weights one quarter what the beercan does.
► Better sharpness (apparently) at f/2.8 than the beercan at f/4.
► Closer focusing from 1100mm to 600mm.

2 years ago |wow our add campaign made it even to a sony rumors site! after spamming it all over youtube. nice job samsung…

2 years ago |Yeah, that’s an ad: check the user’s videos, they’re all about new Samsung cameras. I have no idea why sonyalpharumors would even post this.

2 years ago |Watching the video of the NX100 to the NEX5 comparison angered me to say the least. The user who made it is a complete idiot to say the least. Quoting Wikipedia … that’s just top notch. How about checking DXO Mark for sensor ratings. That’s right she’s too scared to do that cuz the NEX5′s sensor owns the NX100. That review was “SUBJECTIVE” to say little. God knows how much Samsung sent her to say such kind words about such a bad camera. I just laughed out loud when I heard her talking about how great the Samsung’s lens is…. What a dumb and technologically illiterate person that user is !!! There’s just something about Samsung’s products that piss me off…. whether its their marketing campaigns saying that Sony’s LCD screens are made by them which is a pure lie or videos like these. Honestly, Samsung the day you reach a level of quality that Sony products have is the day the world ends. PERIOD!!!
Dude
2 years ago |@Mat Foulidis
Thats a strong insult you do there.
Of cause she didn’t do a scientisfic test on the IQ.
But people also argue about how relevant DXO is in daily use.
She made images of her style and showered whats was negatively visible to her.
Not more not less.
You can spend hours of thinking the lens misfocused or is weaker in the corners than the Samsung or she got a bad sample (what seems to be said whenever people dislike reviews), … or whatever.
And think who buys theses small interchangeable cameras.
Many woman.
Not saying none of them is into tech but in general they just don’t care that much about technical details but about the result.
You say that is a bad type of photography?
and btw the battery of NEX is 7.7Wh vs 9.6Wh of the NX…
AVESTA
2 years ago |yeah, but the fact is that if she used the new update on the NEX changing the iso would be done in 2 steps. She didn’t even go over the fact that the NEX can have custom buttons, which is way better than the samsung

2 years ago |Wow, “there’s just something about Samsung’s products that piss me off…”. Great argument! Wikipedia is sometimes ok, you know, and there are resources listed below. In fact I do agree that the Samsung AMOLED uses less power. Care to say how this is not correct? About the sensor, yes, the Sony is surely better, so? What about some real controls? And what’s the problem with Schneider lenses? In fact Samsung has pretty damn good quality in their products. Guess, you wouldn’t know, because you never touched an NX100.
And care to give us a source where Samsung claims they made LCDs for Sony?

2 years ago |wonder what firmware version she tested the Nex5 with?
Surely they shortened the steps in ISO selection with latest firmware.
Chris
2 years ago |he 85mm samples are awesome.. this shows that 2.8 is plenty fast on fullframe in the hands of someone who know how to handle a camera : )
i never understand the crying for f1.0 bullshit lenses : )
Vlad
2 years ago |I was waiting for a lens like this. Great for the mountain – light, small and you are not scared if you ruin it, because it is cheap.
Chris
2 years ago |exactly! it is only 1/6 the price of the 85mm f1.4 zeiss
i doubt the zeiss is 6 times better hehe
sure f2 would be nice.. but the canon 85mm f1.8 for example is 425g the sony only 175g.
thats 2/5th of the weight.
AVESTA
2 years ago |I would bet that the 85mm Zeiss is 10 times better.
It’s been rated as the best 85mm ever made for a digital camera.
räven
2 years ago |Does it focus 10 times closer than the sony, is it 10 times sharper (lol 25 000 MTF), does it only have a tenth of the croma abs. Only one stop faster than the sony. Not 10 times sharper.
It all depends on how you view it.
AVESTA
2 years ago |do a quick search on Flickr and you’ll be surprised by the results.
räven
2 years ago |I’m not disputing the fact tat it is a lot better. I was just set against calling something ten times better when by the measured results it is not.
Chris
2 years ago |only 10 times better if you are a gear head..
did you check the samples on the bulgarian site? i bet you could never take such pictures.. and those are just fine and nothing spectacular
it is crazy how people think that Zeiss lenses make them a better photographer.
did you publish any work with your zeiss lenses? any books, exhibits? did you inspire other people to take and think more about pictures are did you only recommend them your awesome 2k zeiss lenses??

2 years ago |It’s Samsung PAID review.
Look at the other videos uploaded by the same user.
http://vimeo.com/user5324632/videos/all
All his/her videos are promoting Samsung products.
Nice job now SAR of posting deceptive Samsung adds on your site!

2 years ago |HA. what a bad badly scripted ad disguised as a review.. it’s hard not to realize she’s looking at something and reading off it all the way.
ANYWAY. any good reviewer would know it’s pronounced N-E-X and not Nex.
by the way, was shopping for a TV a few years back. and yes, the samsung promoter was telling me how samsung manufactures the LCDs for Sony. i thought that barefaced lie was just in my country, but i guess it’s also around the world.

2 years ago |I know this sounds racist… but I haven’t met one single objective Korean person yet when it comes to Korean products.
Chris
2 years ago |you are a camera racist ; ) there is nothing bad about the nx line.. in fact it has the superior lenses (road map with 60mm macro early 2011 and 85mm portrait in late 2011)
what good is the superior sensor of the nex if you only have a crappy zoom kit lens..
Freddo
2 years ago |Well, you haven’t met me obviously! I am a korean owning a NEX-5 and loving it. And I prefer italian and german cars and french, japanese and thai food.

2 years ago |That’s a lot of heat generated here, these are tools we are talking about, who cares what you use – the result is more important. If a certain tool gives you pleasure in the mean time, go for it – it doesn’t mean another person wil enjoy it just as much:)

2 years ago |Just thought if you were following this website, then you should’ve probably known that 4 E-mount lenses are coming out in the year of 2011, with high chance 1-2(mostly 1) of them being a Zeiss, too.
I’m not trying to say that the Nex line is better than the NX for sure, but it definitely has much greater potential imo. In terms of control, honestly with the latest firmwire update, I seriously don’t think Nex is that bad at all. I mean, in reality would you change ISO/Shooting Mode between every picture?

If you would change settings after every picture… then you should have gotten a dSLR/dSLT in the first place.

2 years ago |I got both NEX5 and GF-1 but never consider SamSung. mainly because of the way they selling their product like this. I did not see Sony Direct attack Panny or Samsung (one way or the other). this is a cheap way of selling that make me believe that SamSung is a kind of unsure of their product.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |Andrea, this really does seem to me to be poorly executed Samsung paid propaganda here, that you have mistakenly published as a genuine review. I would appreciate it if you would remove it, or at the very least label it for what it is.
