New Sony RX100 news roundup…
Ireland shot on the RX100 from Sam Brosnan on Vimeo.
You voted the RX1 as camera of the year (results can be seen here). I confess to have voted for the smaller (and cheaper) Sony RX100
The video on top is made by Sam and shows how great the RX100 is for video.
Digitalcamerareview also tested the Sony RX100 and writes: “Sony rightly observes that the RX100 would be an outstanding choice for a DSLR owner who wanted a pocket-size compact camera capable of producing high-quality images, but you don’t have to own a DSLR or even shoot in anything but fully automatic modes to enjoy the benefits of fine image quality from this new Sony.”
The RX100 sells for $649 in US but I have found one single new camera for $589 on eBay US (new!). An RX100 super kit with plenty of stuff is sold for $648 by FocusCamera via Amazon (Click here). Unusual for a Sony camera is also the huge amount of reviews you can read at Amazon (183!). Yep, while the RX1 is certainly impressive the RX100 has the advantage that most of us can actually easily…buy it

6 months ago |I am considering to buy it as a complement to my Sony NEX-6. But, at that price I am thinking… am I not just better off to buy a 2nd NEX-6 body. I have other NEX lenses.

You can’t go wrong either way.
Regarding the posted video, the frame rate looked pretty jumpy with anything moving faster than a normal human pace. Maybe codex or compression of the person who edited?

6 months ago |i think on the vimeo comments he mentioned that he was dropping frames cause he shot at 60 but posted at 24. so maybe that is contributing to that effect. lovely video though.

6 months ago |I got mine because I wanted a compact camera that performs well yet could fit into my pocket. The RX100 fits both those requirements very well. It punches well above its weight.

6 months ago |I’ve been a Sony Cybershot and Alpha owner for quite some time now. I currently own an A65V and more recently a RX100, and since I got the latter, my A65V stayed at home for almost every photo shoot opportunity I’ve had.
RX100 made me rethink about the needs to own a DSLR/DSLT for my personal needs (family outings, trips and occasional event). It’s not perfect, but it fills more than 95% of my photo and video shooting needs. And while I’ve been seriously eyeing the RX1, I’m hoping that Sony comes out with an APS-C based “RX10″ in the future with a standard zoom lens similar to the RX100.
My only personal peeves about the RX100 that I would love to see on the next RX unit:
1. It ABSOLUTELY needs to enable the stack modes when shooting in RAW or RAW+JPEGs like all the DSLT models do. It is silly that it works for panoramic, but not for twilight or HDR. I hope this could be fixed via a firmware update.
2. No manual focus that I could find. I’ve had a few occasions where I really needed one.
3. Either a battery charger or a better door for the USB connector (I’m always afraid of scratching or breaking mine each time I open it).
4. A flash shoe to enable using accessories.
I know, besides the stack-mode limitation, the RX1 would solve my personal issues and then some, and I’m seriously considering grabbing one if/when the price goes down a little. Though I’m still not completely sold on the prime fixed lens camera idea at this point.
Other things I would like to see in the RX line:
1. GPS (it’s in almost every lower-end Cybershot available)
2. Wireless and store-like upgradeability, like in the latest NEX units.
3. Tilting screen. Yes… I’m willing to have the unit a couple of mm thicker to be able to shoot at different angles (over people’s heads, at eye level of my kids, etc).

6 months ago |There is a manual focus mode. I set mine to the middle enter button as a toggle. Works great. I do agree with you about the stacked mode feature. I do sorta wish it had a tilt screen but I prefer the smaller size. The only other thing I wish it had was a 24mm wide angle lens, but again smaller size wins. It’s a great camera, I love mine!

6 months ago |I’m sure the next RX100 or whatever will have some of what you’re looking for. Or the NEX. Or the RX1. On and on.

6 months ago |As a reply, it DOES offer manual focus. I configured mine so that the ring around the lens controlled focus. I actually LOVED how versatile the configurations could be set.
I returned mine because of several reasons I hope will be fixed by the next version
-1/2000 shutter (This plagues the RX1 as well and is the single biggest flaw)
-no battery charger included at $650?!
-flimsy USB door
-no “apps” like NEX was going to get. (Now that I have a 5r, the apps are virtually worthless)
-small but needs two hands because it’s hard to hold. Give it a NEX type grip since the lens already sticks out a bit.
The single best feature that doesn’t get much attention: using the macro focusing with a larger than compact camera sensor.

6 months ago |Thank you both for pointing out the manual focus feature. No sure how I missed it. Somehow, I was expecting it to show up on the Fn menu.

6 months ago |+1 for the USB door remark. It still scares the living daylights out of me as well to open it without breaking it off.
And it is great to see that our SAR tsar Andrea voted for the RX100 as well.

6 months ago |I love my RX100.
There is only one thing that repeatedly annoys me – the flash metering is kinda crap…

6 months ago |I bought mine with 2 purposes in mind. Live pub bands and travelling. With live bands, it’s best to be inconspicuous. The last thing band members needs is to be put off with is a camera lens stuffed in his or her face. The zoom, 1080HD, ISO 6400, 1.8 aperture and stability are ideal for this. With travelling I find the larger DSLR is again far too bulky and cumbersome. I like to take shots of natives where I can slip the camera out of the top pocket, take the shot where the subjects doesn’t know they are being taken, and then back into the pocket. Again, the RX100 is ideal for this.
