NEX-5n goes RED styled for video!

Richard Gale made the cinema housing for the NEX 5N you can see here on top. EosHD posted the news and writes: “It essentially turns the tiny toy-like NEX 5N into a mini Red. Advantages include a secure full sized HDMI port, cooling system, integrated Sony monitor, robust build quality, better handling and protection for the camera itself from drops, etc. As you can see, looks wise it is quite an eye opener too, turning the NEX 5N into something much closer to a digital cinema camera.”
It transform your NEX-5n in a sort of small RED camera. Existing owners of the NEX 5N can buy the kit sub £1000. As soon we find more info and first preorder options I will post them here on SAR!

12 months ago |Looks awesome! But I wonder if it makes it more difficult to access the menu and other camera controls. I’d like to see it in action.

12 months ago |Can it shoot 4K like red too?
Lol

12 months ago |‘Can it shoot 4K like red too?’
Yes: there’s a version of the housing capable of holding 4 NEX bodies…

12 months ago |Doesn’t seem to make much sense to me. Why not buy a VG-20 instead, which was designed for video?

12 months ago |Heating issues??
Randy S.
12 months ago |Yes new stills cameras are not meant to run for more then a few minutes of video.

12 months ago |Well I have tested my A77 and I have shooted 4 continuous hours of material without any overheating problems… With the SteadyShot off. 4 hours was enought for me to test so i just stopped shooting. I guess It would do even more. The video was divided stopped by camera every 30 minutes because of the European laws, but I started to shooting another 30 minutes clip immediately.

12 months ago |Well, you could have left image stabilisation on since it is electronic stabilisation in video, not mechanical like when shooting stills.

12 months ago |Was referring to nex over heating genius. Which is why this conversion needs extra cooling to run long video as over heating in nex is a known issue.

12 months ago |Steve Huff had reported problems with overheating NEX-7 (during recording).

12 months ago |Looks great..been following this development since somebody posted it on NEX forum @ Dpreview.com
Sure, it doesn’t shoot 4K but addressing the overheat issue and making it more robust (hope it does provide more points for mounting it on a proper tripod.) Now we need somebody to hack the camera and provide more features.

12 months ago |No it turns it into a sort of fs100. It can’t shoot raw video like a red. Which is what makes a RED a RED. (well and 4k but whatever its not a MINI RED in any sense.) Its cool as long as its not so expense it makes since to buy a fs100 for 700. Also 5n can only do realtime. So no over and under cranking.

12 months ago |HEY, it’s all about budget… This is for people on the budget that already have a NEX-5N or that doesn’t want to invest on more expensive equipment. I’m sure admin said that because of the form factor, not becaue of features.

12 months ago |buh a vg 20 will just only slightly more then this conversion.

12 months ago |I recently got a VG20 to go with my 5n.
This 5n rig can cost up to £1500.
VG20 body cost me £825.
VG20 (even with the lack of picture profiles) is much better for video (no overheating, faster af, 5.1 mic, better ergonomics, better lowlight ability)Has nice solid build, better (and cheaper) batteries.
Its the best purchase Ive made really.
The EOSHD guy ripped into the VG20 pricepoint but praises this? Says it all about video dslr bloggers.
Nice Rig for the guy who made it for himself but selling it at such a price isnt such a good thing.
Sony may even jump on him (think of the Sony ps3 mods)if not too careful.

12 months ago |Spectacular creation. Hope to see more of these visionary concepts utilizing the small NEX bodies as central components for extremely specialized housings.
Aside from the client shock factor, the real beauty of this rig lies in its usability for specialized needs, yet remove the camera any time for compact walk around unit. Highly impressive. The same camera can be used in underwater housing, or sit atop mini remote helicopter. A true component system camera.

12 months ago |I have been follow the development from DVXuser.com too!
Personally, i don’t think this will be a economical demanded product, even Richard Gale thinks so, but is very interesting and just for the overheating alone is wonderful.
But, to move the production cost to the low quantity on pieces based on the low demand, make this a very expensive product, even expenseve than the camera itself.
The Nex 5n is by no means a great video camera; it’s overheat, no audio input and of course no manual audio control, the quality of the HDMI output on standby is not so useful for focus pulling and color or exposure check with a external monitor prior recording, not clean HDMI output.
So, my thinking is: great effort and a technical achievement too from Richard Gale, but a a kind worthless given the limitations of the camera itself.
My two cents.

12 months ago |Sucks that the camera and monitor take different batteries. Really sucks to carry both sets, and chargers to go along with. There should be an adapter allowing the standard NEX batteries to fit the monitor unit. Sony should make such a thing.

12 months ago |So clyde get a vg20 that has all those things and probably cost marginally more then this conversion. Oh vg 20 shoots RAW stills
Clyde
12 months ago |Plus you get an EVF with the VG20 and rotating screen. Alas, it will never be as “component” capable as the NEX body which can be broken down for compactness, put into underwater housings, fly on mini helicopter.

12 months ago |I didn’t think 5n had a remote . This case makes this as big or bigger then vg20. Vg 20 has remote control like nex 7.

Wasn´t there an event in July?

12 months ago |For DSLR style cinematography on a budget, this is a godsend. The price is acceptable and the quality of video possible from the 5N is better than most people realize. In many ways it’s superior to the VG20. Think about it; a Canon 5D3 with lens and Zacuto rig is going to cost approximately £5000. This 5N rig approx £1500. And the quality of video is almost identical. The guy who’s taken the trouble to design and make this should be applauded.
Monicalol
12 months ago |Owning both I can firmly say that the 5n is not superior for video than the vg20.
NEXfive
12 months ago |Since the NEX-VG20 and NEX-5N are technically the same cameras in different cases with only slightly different firmware there should be a dramatic firmware bug in one of them to make the other superior.
Monicalol
12 months ago |Same sensor yes but different results. Many VG20 owners have noticed a difference between 5N footage and VG20 footage. Lowlight is better on VG20 from my uses

12 months ago |The psychological effect is great. Just in case a BBC or other broadcasting team is shooting a documentary: with a NEX-5N they’re having problems to be accepted as serious, but with this case eveything should work out fine.
Greg Wallis
12 months ago |Ha, yes it’s a great shame but how something appears seems to make a commercial difference. And with this rig you couldn’t help but look “professional” even if the video files will be identical.
Randy S.
12 months ago |Yeah as long as you have external sound (which kind of makes this things cost irrelevant.
Ingmar
12 months ago |The point for the NEX-5n is, that it’s cheap. So why the hell spend 1000 Pound for a simple case around it? At this price I get a rig with Follow Focus and more. which helps at focusing, gives the thing better handling and can be used for other cameras if you switch. So I don’t get the point. And it doesn’t add a better codec to the NEX so you stick to AVCHD
Bergman
12 months ago |I think the idea is as same as T-shirt and I quite understand this point.
However, the cost of it is one of the main factors that make people adopt it.
