@gojiguy : turn of MF assist and only turn on focus peaking. That will solve your problem. I too have an Nex7.

What's really broken is DMF unlike the RX100 when using DMF on NEX you must half press the shutter in order to focus manually when grabbing the ring. The RX100 allows you to manual focus without half-pressing the shutter. simply grab the focus ring anytime while its in DMF. Why this hasn't been patched yet is a mystery when really its just a few lines of code to activate manual focus when the focus ring is moved. this introduces 2 extra functions of half-pressing the shutter. 1st step is if the half-press lasts less than 0.5 seconds the regular autofocus won't kick in. But if the half-press is lasts longer than 0.5 seconds then the camera will autofocus on its own.
