2 years ago |Unless they stop trying to take away this website you’ve worked so hard to build from nothing I will never again buy another Sony product…unless it’s really, really good. And even then I won’t feel good about it. There’s no telling how many sales this site has generated for them. Just think of all the people who bought the A77 that would have jumped ship if you hadn’t kept giving them hope.

2 years ago |Dear SONY, I bought the a77 because of this website.

2 years ago |+1. I followed the news for the A77 here and decided to buy it. This was my main source, otherwise I wouldn’t bought it. That’s why I think that it is mistake that Sony want that this site has to change name.

2 years ago |By the way, anyone noticed how sensitive Sony was to pricing on the fs100 and quickly dropped it by a substantial amount. Why don’t we see that sort of thing with the higher end stills cameras? They seem to hold much firmer to pricing when it comes to them.
Matt
2 years ago |Because the FS100 is a new market segment for them and a completely new product. Alpha cameras have been around for a fair old while, they have their price points in place.

2 years ago |I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE A FIRMWARE UPDATE THAT GETS RID OF THE VIDEO MODE 1.86 CROP WHEN YOU TURN STEADYSHOT OFF!!!!!!!!
LET US GO ABOVE 1600 ISO IN VIDEO MODE TOO!
Someone seriously needs to mke a facebook page or something to help us get a firmware update on this crop when in video mode.. Fine if it;s on when steadyshot is ON then that’s great but what’s the deal with the crop staying there when steadyshot is turned off?
Maybe sonyalpharumors guy will help us make a petition or something to send to sony…….

2 years ago |Sorry to add this question to this thread but there’s nowhere else to ask (and I really value opinions on here).
I need a mid range really good quality zoom for my A77. Which is better? Sigma 17-50, Tamron 17-50 or Sony 16-50 (all f/2.8)? I sold my Zeiss 16-80 f/3.5-4.5 as I need a faster lens.
Thanks.
zstan
2 years ago |Sony 16-50 definitely. Sharp, has SSM and in camera distortion correction. If you are doing more video the Sigma works better with the lens OS though. Tamron is also very good for its price, but if u can afford go for Sony.
SonyA77
2 years ago |I have not used the Sigma, I had the Tamron and have now sold it. The Sony obviously wins on paper.
The Sony is sharper at f2.8, but then it should be as it costs significantly more. If within budget, then definitely Sony for stills and video.
The Tamron is an excellent lens though and is difficult to beat for IQ at THAT price. AF is noisy if that matters to you.
It may sound clichéd, but the Sony really was made for the A77 and I think if you got the Tamron or Sigma you would always have that doubt over whether you should have got the Sony.
Godsakes
2 years ago |Value wise the tamron 17-50mm is unbeatable and not that far off the Sony in image quality, if the want the absolute best with all the perks (namely SSM) and are wiling to pay double then the sony
Joe
2 years ago |Hey Dave! I rented all three and the Sony 16-50 tested quite well. I’d say it is the best of the three throughout the range. The only problem is the cost.
Adam
2 years ago |I have the Tamron – and I love it. Maybe the Sony is a bit faster to focus, but depending on your use the Tamron is really great value for money.
Martin
2 years ago |I’d take Sony 16-50!!
Dave Cox
2 years ago |Thanks everyone. A pretty unanimous verdict there – I’d better start saving as I had almost decided to buy the Sigma (75 bucks off this week).
Thanks for all the honest feedback.
Cheers,
Dave.

2 years ago |Noooo! Get the 24-70 CZ… It only cost about 3 times as much.
Dave Cox
2 years ago |Isn’t the 24-70 a FF lens? If so, that’s 36-105 on APS-C. Not good for landscape work.
Joe
2 years ago |Dave, the 16-50 is very sharp on the 16 end which will overlap with your 10-20 and give you a little more reach if you need it. I think, if anything, the wideness, even 1mm more will help with what you do.

wth
2 years ago |If you are using the A77, please use the button at the top of the camera to stop the switching between live view and EVF.
You can even configure the live view to display the quick menu only and turn your A77 into a Canikon.

2 years ago |I am amazed that somebody goes to such an event without practising first, but then it never ceases to amaze me that people buy expensive cameras but don’t read the manual…
wth
2 years ago |Well, he was probably new to the system.
Having played with Canikon for the first time, it took me 2 mins to figure our that I need to pull a leaver to activate live view…
I expected the camera to fart…
Not to mention the dreadful focusing speed when the camera is in live view… I guess it’s there just for video ppl.
SonyA77
2 years ago |It’s only when you use live view on a another brand that you realise how good Sony’s implementation of it is. My mates D90 is a joke!
adam
2 years ago |sorry. I was already on manual switching EVF.. The thing is when ur eye is not looking at the EVF, still the EVF will turns off for power saving..and then u’ll have the problems becouse theres slight mili second lag before its on…go out and take some shoots of birds and you’ll know what i mean. Im not against EVF, i like it actually, being able to see the effect through the EVF is cool..
actually, I dont think the switching lag is fixable with a firmware, i believe its more of a hardware issues, the sensor needs to detect the presence of the Eye/any object is looking through it..thats already few split second of communication of i/o
SonyA77
2 years ago |adam, change the power saving to something longer. Batteries are dirt cheap.
adam
2 years ago |I actually shoots with Liveview, but for fast action photography and long focal zoom, i like to compose with the Viewfinder more as i found it easier to Shoot the exact scene that i saw with my eye viewing angle(head movement, eye level..bla bla bla..).. i have problems understanding the scene from the LiveView in this situation. Other than that , Liveview is my option.
people dont understand the technology of PDAF and CDAF..so how can they understand the benefits of sony’s Quick Live View system..or perhaps sony marketing shouldve done better educating people with it technology.
One funny story happened to me few few weeks ago where I attend a sony Flash workshop to work on my Flash skills. The Profesional sony’s Instructor guy saw me shooting with the Liveview, he told me to switch to Viewfinder because the LiveView is slow….. and believe me, he’s a pro(no joke)
thank you SonyA77 for ur recommendation, but i just cant find the option to disable the EVF OFF WITHOUT EYE PRESENCE Option..will look at it later..
one more, coming from a third world country where currency exchange plays big parts( $1 of my country = 3.5 US Dolaar). An average happy person like me earns only 3k permonth, a77 body only costs u $4K, cheap 50mm F1.8 is $900..1 unit of FM500 battery cost $250..it aint cheap..
Oh i forgot, i have the option to buy cheap 3rd party batteries from Octopus and Phottix!! silly me

I was on the verge of getting a D7000 but held off because of this site.
Clifton
2 years ago |considering the amount of whining, bitching and general complaints and demands in the posts on here, its not hard to see how Sony would fail to see the importance of sites like this.
A dedicated site should have positive comments about the company, not the same fucking arguments about Sony’s choice to go EVF in every thread.
Regarding the A77 firmware update, Sony may feel the camera is already performing up to standard, so why would they use time and resources on improving it?
