10 months ago |LOL at all the hate for Minolta hotshoe. Cause it’s so much better to have a hotshoe that fully supports exactly one flash? *eyerolls*
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |That hate against Minolta hotshoe also got my attention.
Kinda unnecessary. Other than that, nice video.
Matt
10 months ago |Especially for the VG900, considering ALL the VG’s to date have had an ISO cold shoe as well as the Minolta ‘reverse shoe’, not sure what they were really ‘missing’ before?
Jurka
10 months ago |Yeah, but af range feature supports only few lenses and other gimmicks…
How about video crop factor with A99?
Jurka
10 months ago |No AF in M mode.
Kevin Alpha
10 months ago |Are u serious? No af in m mode for still or video?
Matt
10 months ago |Video. It is an ongoing limitation for SLT cameras. Weird that that doesn’t seem to be a problem for the VG900 though…
El Carnicero
10 months ago |Because the VG900 uses CDAF, while the SLT uses PDAF. The phase detection sensors need more light, hence the limit.
austin
10 months ago |wow sony steppin up
T Man
10 months ago |Yep I know Sony doesn’t have the best range of lenses, but they are starting to make great cameras and that is good enough for me. Plus new lenses will come eventually especially for the NEX because everyone loves the NEX.
C
10 months ago |The focus limiting idea is pretty cool. And the tilty screen is great.
But why is it only 6fps? That’s the same speed as the 5d3. I thought the whole point of the SLT mirror was super fast frame rates. The a77 has 24mp and >10fps… why does the a99?! Why the hell do we have to have the EVF when it doesn’t even give a faster camera?
kingrenas
10 months ago |It can go up to 10FPS but it will be in crop mode, the guy says that in the Video.
C
10 months ago |That doesn’t count. Limiting 10fps to a 1.4x crop is completely stupid.
The a77 can process 24mp at >10fps. Why can’t the a99?
guest
10 months ago |um….because the a77 IS a crop.
El Carnicero
10 months ago |Guest: Yeah, but 24MP is still 24MP. A77 files are not smaller than A99 files.
Roman
10 months ago |No, resolution is the same. But RAWs are now 14bit so I guess it makes reading data slower.
Strange thing – RAW file size is the same.
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |The “low” (for today’s standards) fps is intriguing me. Usually one a company releases a ‘low’ megapixel camera, it’s because it’ll be fast focusing, high bursting, with high ISO capabilities.
The A99 seem to tick only the first box.
I can see studio and landscape photographers saying that ’24mp is not enough’ (when you have a 36mp camera out there) and sports photographers complaining about the low burst rate (and ISO going up only up to 25600).
OTOH, I really welcome the Quick Navi back!
john
10 months ago |Nice that Sony threw us a bone.
As usual Sony Giveth and Sony Taketh away.
I hear the RK2 will have a Zeiss 50mm 1.4 but no pop up flash so they can make it even smaller and $500 more expensive.
But it will be so small and shiny people won’t care and just go WOW.
C
10 months ago |I know that times change. And 6fps isn’t particularly “slow” – it’s just that we were told that the whole POINT of SLT designs was super-fast frame rates.
When the cheapo a55 could do 10fps, why on earth can’t the “professional” a99? It seems to me like the SLT design hasn’t added much extra that couldn’t be done with a traditional OVF.
WM
10 months ago |If you think the ONLY feature of SLT is fast frame rate, you need to go and read up about it
C
10 months ago |It was the only really impressive feature which traditional SLRs couldn’t do. 10fps in a camera like the a55 was insane. 6fps in a >$2800 professional full frame isn’t impressive at all.
Other SLT benefits
Quieter shutter – 5d3 has it
Information in viewfinder – d800 has the horizon spirit level
Less vibration – a very minor benefit
Potentially better autofocus – yet to be seen
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |@C – you also forgot “cheaper”. And “being able to have a built-in flash”.
Matt
10 months ago |IT has nothing to do with the ability of the camera to process many fps, that the camera can easily do. It is the rate of the sensors readout at full resolution that will be the limiting factor on the A99, which is lass an issue with the APS-C cameras. Further to this, the 10 and 12 fps modes on the other SLTs don’t maintain AF during capture, they lock it at the first frame, which really isn’t terribly useful. The A99 maintains AF during shooting, for all frames – so while less total frames more will actually be in focus. Further to this compared to ‘other’ SLRs which lose AF during capture the A99 is tracking the subject even while taking a photo. This is a huge deal! Get over the ‘just’ 6 fps – This will be 6 VERY usable frames. Other cameras will have to work VERY hard to be as good (not saying they aren’t good currently, just saying they have to have some pretty damn good AF to be able to make up for the AF blackout during shooting).
Shawn
10 months ago |Matt, this is just flat out wrong.
The A77 *DOES* AF in between shots.
From Gary Freidman’s book:
You can think of “continuous advance” as a modern-day equivalent of a motor drive – if you hold the shutter release button down, the camera will continue to take picture after picture after picture as fast as it can until the memory card is full. “Hi” Continuous Advance mode will capture images as fast as 8 pictures per second until the buffer is full (at which point the camera pauses as it writes images to the memory card. The faster the memory card, the faster room for one more image will open up and the camera shoots again). If autofocus is enabled, the camera will autofocus before each image.
In the “Continuous Advance Priority AE” on the A77 that does 12 fps, you just cannot adjust exposure settings – it’s fixed to F/5.6.
Also he states “Yes, it can autofocus between shots; however don’t expect it to perform miracles. This is not a $6,000 camera. It probably won’t track a Formula 1 race car, but it can easily track a kid on a bicycle.”
Do you own the A77?
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |6 fps burst? That’s not much better than my A900. Again, I don’t see where this is REALLY an upgrade.
Sky_walker
10 months ago |In switching mode to 10FPS?
Live view?
Video?
Various different MF assists?
Completely new AF system?
Support for loads of accessories unavailable (or useless) on A900?
14 bit RAWs?
The list goes on…
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |^^ As primarily a landscape shooter, I don’t need any of that stuff.
I don’t need fast frame rates. Most of my exposures are 1/10 of a sec or longer.
Live view. Meh.
Video? That’s what my NEX is for.
New AF system, well I shoot f/11 and smaller. Work out the hyper-focal distances on those and get back to me.
The only accessory I need is a lee filter holder.
14 bit raw is nice, but it’s not worth $2700.
As I said, this isn’t an upgrade _for me_ as delivered.
I could have used more resolution, but didn’t get that. I’ll pass.
Hellven
10 months ago |if you’re a landscape photographer, just wait for the Nex-9, its better in all aspects then a SLR/SLT for that kind of photography
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |Pretty much exactly what I’m doing.
But I’m still not convinced that cam will ever exist.
Jonathan
10 months ago |Yea, and as a landscape shooter you really need more than 6 fps. I think this is Sony’s first real all around competitor in the pro market. It can only go up from here.
By the way I shoot Friday night football games, the crop mode will be perfect for my needs. I still have my 850, 580, and A57. The latter will go to my daughter.
Sky_walker
10 months ago |well, I guess 36 MPx FF will be for you then, to appear in 2013.
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |Until sony does something like the “built in vertical grip” that we’ve heard about on here.
The engineers and designers won’t have to lug the damn thing up and down mountains. I will.
Sky_walker
10 months ago |I’m against build-in vertical grip. It doesn’t make any sense. Specially when you can get Minoltan setup: 3 batteries in standard body + VG setup. What’s the point of making camera bigger when it’s inferior by this to the regular one?
C
10 months ago |Why don’t you just buy a D800e? What’s the point in waiting for a camera which doesn’t even exist when the perfect landscape camera already exists?
Best dynamic range, highest resolution and the sharpest images. Plus you have tilt-shifts with Nikon for landscape work.
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |Because I think the Zeiss glass is superior to Nikon’s glass, and it’s less expensive to boot.
C
10 months ago |Except there is more Zeiss glass for Nikon or Canon mount than for Sony A-mount. And for landscapes at f11 as you said earlier, manual focus isn’t a big deal. Sony definitely has some good glass, but compared to the tilt-shifts for Canon/Nikon, and the Zeiss and own-brand primes available, the Sony lineup can’t compete yet.
Don’t be won over just by the name “Zeiss”. While the Sony lenses are undoubtedly good, the Nikon 45 PC or any of the Zeiss manual focus primes plus 36mp sensor with INSANE dynamic range and no AA filter will easily beat anything you can put on the a99.
Denis
10 months ago |Landscape shooter? LV “meh”?
It’s strange at least.
Francisco G.
10 months ago |If you are landscape photographer why are you whining about the 6fps? ¿Clouds to fast for you?
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |I’m saying I could careless. I was just surprised that the A77 is 10fps and the A99 is only 6fps. Sony’s not utilizing one of the major advantages of the SLT.
Kevin Alpha
10 months ago |What about high iso performance, I have a900 too, and I think high iso performance is a good reason for upgrade, at least in my case, I shoot events. And in your case, its good to boost iso when you’re in low light.
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |That’s my case. I too often am within low light situation. Had really high hopes that the A900 would get a 102.000 ISO (with boost).
(high frame rate would be nice too)
Guess the A99 isn’t for me, then

10 months ago |based on this video (*) i lost my hope.
i dont care about still photos much, im into video – and for me both the A99 and VG900 fail miserably. i wonder if the profile/style was tweaked or not, but i dont find em any better than my NEX5n – which i also hate more and more.
it just doesnt look good to me. i want my 550D back, or.. hm. maybe the new Nikon?
* : thank you for the test, guys!
John Thomas
10 months ago |Can you clarify why this is completely disapointed you, froma video perspective?
tata
10 months ago |im afraid i cant, but i try. i was hoping for much better DR, better colors, more “filmic look”. they have weird sky colors, weird skintones – its just what i see and how i feel about it. its damn video feel to me.
btw i wasnt impressed with the FS700 either – iirc they have shot parts of this video with that, right? (i hear many ppl laughing now, but i dont mind)
can A99/VG900 give “Canon-like” LiveView for video at least? i mean no change when pressing REC.
NEX cant so far (im afraid NEX6 lacks that “feature” too…) when i bouhgt the NEX5n, this _shocked_ me, and im still not recovered.
maybe its the AVCHD what i really hate, not the camera itself? i know YouTube kills the quality, but thats where i present 99% of my videos.
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |You can’t REALLY judge image quality from an YouTube video from a PRE-PRODUCTION camera…
w1th0utnam3
10 months ago |This video clearly used some kind of post-processing color filter (refering to the turquois sky and orange tones). When you see the stills or some scenes from the VG900 the colors are normal.
tata
10 months ago |im not sure about this… im kinda familiar with this look since i own a NEX5n. :/ (im not really intrested in stills)
w1th0utnam3
10 months ago |Well, I filmed using the a55 and a580, neither of them caused colors like this. Also these scenes are shot with the FS700, all the scenes filmed with the a99 and the VG900 look ok. If you are concered about the video quality of the a99 have a look at Sony Australias sample movie.
Rien Vesseur
10 months ago |If this video was shot with a Sony cam I have to agree with you. There is a weird greenish hue in most of it, the skin tone is not good. There appears to be a lack of contrast, too. When there is contrast the whites are completely blown. There is something “synthetic” about the look of most of this video.
Lonnie Utah
10 months ago |You realize that most video editing programs that are worth their salt will allow you to correct for all the things you are complaining about.
Tom
10 months ago |No offense, but I don’t think you know what you are talking about. Using the right framerates for the occasion, and proper grading, you can get ANY look you want.
Also, if you despise AVCHD, use the 4:2:2 clean HDMI out and record uncompressed to an external recorder..
Ingmar Rieger
10 months ago |Sorry Tom, but I have to ask you: Have you ever worked with AVCHD-Files from for example a NEX-5n? Too much color Banding when you try to do a bit more than small contrast changes in color grading! Compression is the main point why I’m currently thinking about buying the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera. Color latitude is the thing that really matters.
Lonnie Utah: The same as I wrote above: AVCHD 4:2:0 gives you not enough information to really correct everything he complains about.
One question maybe someone can answer: Really no more differentiation between NTSC/PAL model? The specs on the Sony site (German) tells you have booth 50p and 60p and also 24p? In one of the videos I heard something which sounded to me like this differentiation is still present?!
Antony
10 months ago |If you are primarily a landscape shooter, why exactly are you concerned about 6fps?
tata
10 months ago |Tom, what you mean by “right framerates for the occasion”? about grading: as in audio, i prefer to record the best possible, not trying to “fix it in the mix”. i know its possible to some degree, but noise, banding and other artifacts are killing me. the external recorder may be a good solution, but its expensive and not that “compact”.
(and needs cameras w/ clean HDMI out, at least 4:2:2)
i still have hope in GH3 (600k LCD, meh..) and the Nikon D600.
if these fail too, ill get a good old Canon 600D.
Cloak Photography
10 months ago |By framerate he was talking about shooting in 24 fps instead of 60 as shown in the video. Grading is not about audio it’s about grading the color of the movie. These two things are what gives you the “filmic” look. I have a video showing the difference of straight out of camera (granted with contrast and saturation all the way down) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqGPKsWFYx8
Before you say you don’t want to go through the hassle of color grading the video (just one click with presets) yet want a filmic look. Remember every movie gets color graded and that (along with 24 fps and ND filter is how you get the “filmic” look you want.
Carnevali
10 months ago |For a landscape shooter it is certainly not much of an upgrade from A900. But then landscape is all about resolution and color rendition, if you were about to purchase a 2800$ piece of gear, better invest on a good piece of glass, wait for the rumored 36mpx SLT or buy a nikon d800.
redfern
10 months ago |So, if I’m reading DK’s article correctly, the new PDAF on sensor and AF-D features will not work with legacy Minolta lenses. Instead you will just be limited to the 19-pt. PDAF block. And considering the age of these lenses, I wouldn’t assume that Sony will support them in firmware updates (for example, they already support the Sony 50/1.4, but not the Minolta version — don’t count on that changing).
If that’s so, then I feel like so many of the new innovations will be wasted unless you have the latest and greatest lenses. Hell, it looks like even all of the current CZ lenses are not supported, except for the 24-70. What happens if they can’t accommodate these in firmware? Are the owners of the existing versions of these lenses out of luck? I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case, since part of the updating that was done to the new 300/2.8 was to make it compatible with the on-sensor PDAF. Does that mean that owners of previous versions won’t get this benefit?
And looking forward, this situation gets a little scarier. Right now legacy lenses are at least supported, though they don’t get any of the new benefits. In the future, as the NEX and Alpha lines converge in a FF NEX, compatibility might get even more dicey. For example, the LA-EA3 adapter doesn’t have a built-in motor and doesn’t support legacy lenses without SAM or SSM (and even then, only a few work with on-sensor PDAF). Couple this with the lack of IBIS, and legacy lens users will get less functionality than they’re used to when the NEX goes FF.
I suppose it was only a matter of time before this happened, and time will tell if Sony comes up with some workarounds, but for now it’s looking like the newer technologies are coming with some sacrifices for older users. I was all set to buy the a99, but knowing that I can’t take advantage of many of the new goodies with my Minolta lens collection is a real bummer. Are the remaining features worth $2800? I’m not sure.
Lonnie Utah

10 months ago |Uh huh… and when lenses that are still being sold today are incompatible with on-sensor PDAF, or in a year when the majority of Alpha lenses out there don’t have AF at all on the FF NEX and no stabilization, does that still make sense?
japb
10 months ago |If i were buying a US$2800 camera i would also be frustrated that some of the headline features require new lenses. On the other hand, just because some of the trick AF is not supported on older A-mount lenses, it doesn’t mean they won’t AF at all. They will AF as well as they ever AF’ed on previous bodies.
And i would hope that Sony is smart enough not to kill A-mount as long as Canikon are still making DSLRs.
w1th0utnam3
10 months ago |The on-sensor PDAF still allows better continuous subject tracking even if the lens does not support the AF-Range mode.
Also the AF-Range mode is mainly interesting for sports photography and the currently supported lenses are the most interesting lenses for this kind of photography. If you’re not into action photography you don’t really need this feature.
redfern
10 months ago |According to footnote #1 at the bottom of this page:
http://presscentre.sony.eu/content/detail.aspx?ReleaseID=8033&NewsAreaId=2
the 102pt AF assist will not function with all lenses. Currently there are about 6 that work with it. My concern is that Sony won’t extend support back to the Minolta lenses, so these will effectively be locked out of the advancement. Since I have a TON of Minolta glass, I really don’t want to have to reinvest in order to get the new features of the body. Especially since those new features are part of what you’re paying $2800 for. Without them, I have to wonder if it’s worth the price still.
Walter Knapp
10 months ago |What it means is that those of us chained to Sony by our set of high quality Sony and Minolta lenses just got the gate opened. If to utilize the new stuff you have to buy a new set of lenses, then you are going to spend as much on Sony as going to a new quality set of Nikon or Canon based lenses. Back to much more freedom of choice if you feel you have to keep up with this stuff. And I bet that Nikon and Canon will be much more careful about messing with their customers like that.
I’m certainly not selling off lenses like my 200mm Minolta G macro lens, 16-35 CZ, 70-400 G, 24-70 CZ and others. But there is no reason to consider newer Sony stuff without buying a new lens set. And if Sony is willing to do this to people now, how soon before they freeze out the new lens set you invest in too?
Neo NiGHTS ®
10 months ago |I’m not 100% sure, but it seems that Canon’s flagship camera, the 1Dx, also requires newer lenses (only a handful, it seems so far) to take advantage of that absurdly auto-focus system.
As long as Sony doesn’t keep changing things (cough… cough… hotshoe… cough cough), I think it’s a necessary step.
kingrenas
10 months ago |Well guys i can feel your pain but not always you can have everything in the camera. Nikon and Canon as well do the same thing, there is other functions in the camera to compensate your loss.

I’m sure Sony will bring something better next year on the new A100-FF.

10 months ago |With a quick look in my gear bag, I need an adaptor to use my Rode VideoMic Pro, LumaHawk 312AS, and PocketWizard Plus II on a Minolta shoe. Sure I can get many accessories like third party flashes for the Minolta shoe, but few stores ever stock them. I think it was a gutsy move by Sony to drop the old shoe, but it was going to keep hurting them long term. I really appreciate that they also included the shoe adaptor at no charge. It’s a nice gesture to their existing customers.

10 months ago |Pixel King native iISO ttl and hss radio slave. Would you rather have the mic on adapter or the flash.
And take a look at the new foot. 3rd parties arent gonna make radio slaves for that any easier than iISO. Sony solved a problem that wasnt there. They just added two more adapters to the misconceptions. Some fix.

10 months ago |Nikon just announced the D600 for $2099 body only. It’s $500 more (U.S.) than some people here were predicting, almost the same price as the A850 when that camera was going out of production. I can see a simplified A99 (no HDMI out, less robust construction, etc. selling for that amount).

10 months ago |Lesson I learned… you can’t please all the people all the time. Simply put this camera might not be right for your personal needs. That doesn’t make it an epic “fail”. That means it’s not the camera for you. If you need to hammer a nail then you can try and use your shoe… but don’t complain that the shoe is not getting the job done right.
Personally, I like to shoot some video but mainly need stills for Weddings. The receptions can be tricky so Full Frame and usable High ISO is what I need. I don’t want a built in grip because a ten hour shoot my hand will be in pain. But I can always add it on. I certainly don’t need 36 MP (24 mp is slurping up my SD cards. I do need RAW so I can’t drop the res down on my A77).
Of course these are my needs. So for me it’s a giant upgrade to their last Full Frame (Four Years Ago). That is what it is upgrading from not the A77 that came out less than a year ago.
So far I am very impressed (because of my needs). Looking forward to testing it out.

10 months ago |nicely said! with this price and with this spec in a99, personally i think it is already a best compare with other same price or even more expensive camera..some spec that ppl complain about it is just speechless..all the spec that complain while looking into mark III or nikon d800 it is even same or even better..so if they really want a very good spec, sony rise price then ppl complain about it again..thats human!

10 months ago |I was waiting for the A99 and VG900 eagerly .. mainly for video purporses, for stills I still have old Canon DSLRs. But I have to say – I am very very disappointed. The videos you saw so far from the A99 look shitty – nice DOF, but blown out highlights all over the place (the dancer video and the bentley one from that Swiss photographer who looked totally awful), and there´s lots of color banding on high contrast edges and even moiré .. why doesn´t the GH2 have NO MOIRÉ at all for half the price, and these pictures here are full of them? Very sad .. but you won´t be able to intercut this material (at least from what I saw so far) with shots from the EPIC, GH2, Alexa .. or even FS100 and FS700. Too bad.

(yes, this camera is not for me – but it could be THE camera for others.)

10 months ago |Very poor marketing by Sony and they deserve to get slammed for this. Yes, the video is good, and like many others I was impressed by the enthusiasm over the new AF features. Only to find that they are compatible with a select few lenses. Yes, we’re told that the database will be extended – but we don’t know by how much and when. I don’t mind if it is the case that the technology simply can’t work with older lenses, but for Sony to tout the AF system as one of its big selling points is a big mistake. Sure there are other aspects of the camera that interest me, but AF was going to be the biggest. With my current lens lineup, not so much at the moment. I hope that Sony get pelted for this, and I think they’re going to be more than a little disappoined with A99 sales figures. I think I’ll wait for the 2nd FF SLT (if it ever arrives) – hopefully by then we’ll have a clearer indication as to what lenses Sony are prepared to support.
