One more video from DSLRgear no idea Sony campagn.
This is the latest Sony Australia video to promote mirrorless! What do you think…isn’t that also working against Sony’s own SLT advertising?

Agree, but Sony would said SLT is not equal to SLR.
One is with flicking mirror while the other isn’t.

7 months ago |The campaign is targeted at inappropriate use of DSLRs by people that obviously don’t need them (eg. this add makes it very clear the subjects all use ‘auto’). They are not diminishing the role of DSLRs/SLT in a studio setting and for professionals that require that technology. Instead the focus is always on amateurs and tourists who would certainly benefit from smaller and lighter.
LifeStoryImages.com
7 months ago |Exactly. Plus, I’d say people buying a SONY “SLB” (Single Lens Beamsplitter (lol) ) camera already have decided between A & E-mounts, and have their reasons for doing so. The person just getting into photography who bought a Canikon SLR because they are much better than the non-SLR Canikon wouldn’t have known that the Sony’s (NEX’s) compare to these beasts in image quality.
Marketing WIN.

thats why you dont see a Sony SLR/SLT in the video.. To be honest its alittle biased.
But well.. nonetheless..point is made. “size dosent matter” and Nex does have the ability to produce DSLR like quality images.
Will
7 months ago |Nex has the ability to create DLSR with kit lens images or the 2 or 3 expensive alternatives.
Nex survives on peoples ignorance as is, being that the lens selection, the reason why someone would buy into a system like this, is and has been lacking for eternity.
Focus peaking allows some life in legacy lenses but no one can proclaim it as ideal. M43 has run about 3 rings around them in terms of lenses, of course it has it’s own drawbacks too.

Mike
7 months ago |No, it doesn’t work against Sony’s own SLR/SLT sales, because those who buy Sony SLR/SLT aren’t from among the individual or family types toing following the herd: “I wanna take better pictures so I gotta get me a Nikon or Canon DSLR”
A99 (nor A77 for that matter) buyers are likely not dominated by spur of the moment purchasers who walk into a camera shop uninformed and out with a full frame DSLR.
Lots of folks buy DSLRs that would be better served by small compacts that can go with them everywhere. Compacts are not just a fad but a returning to what we had with small viewfinder | rangefinder | and SLR cameras. For many of us there is no downside to a small, high IQ, camera.

7 months ago |Bad move from Sony in my opinion. All of them shooting with the big screen, arms extended distance. Why don’t they at least give them NEX-6 or 7 to try shooting as usual but with a smaller package? That would be a very convincing commercial.
Mike
7 months ago |Yeah… that’d be nice – show off the diversity of usage options, one of the core things that makes NEX so pleasant to use.

7 months ago |Cause nexes are tailored towards clueless people running on auto in zombie position. If you think it’s otherwise you cheat yourself. The only two cameras we got for now that are kinda exception were made more towards reviewers and people shooting adopted lenses then anyone else. Sony shown this many times, no idea why you are suprised.

7 months ago |Heh. Sad to see the one woman on the pier shooting a 5D Mark II in Auto, and not knowing what “DSLR” means.
Though it’s a little misleading to say that the NEX-5 can take the same quality of photos as that.
Still, I don’t think this hurts Sony’s own DSLTs. It makes the point that for the price class of entry-level DSLRs, you can get something much smaller and more compact. I mean, if you’re never going to take it off Auto anyway, then why bother carrying around something so heavy when you can have a camera that will take as good shots (and which has iAuto for even more intelligent automatic shooting) without all the weight?
Obviously those who are buying into a system (not just Auto + kit lens) will have valid reasons for choosing a DSLR, but for the type of people in this video, that’s just a waste.
As for the “why not a NEX-6 or NEX-7?” argument, I think those are a bit above entry-level in price, and even some of the features in those would be wasted on a graduating point-and-shoot crowd.
I think the commercial works.

7 months ago |Actually the woman on the pier was using a Canon 5D Mark III according to the strap.
Hope it wasn’t her he was saying the NEX sensor is the same size cos he would be wrong and his know it all persona woulda backfired.
As for the adverts… it’s a bit of fun but it also gives the impression that idiots use NEX cameras.

7 months ago |Yea, well. Total newbies don’t even know or bother with this website. Exceptions do ahppen, but when you’ll go through the interface of NEX you’ll see how brilliantly discouraging it is for using anything else than green auto.
Denis
7 months ago |Yes, exactly. Sony targeted SLR/SLT line for advanced ameteurs/pros and NEX for newbies with no idea how to use camera. Things turned to be NEX is using by advanced amateurs/pros despite its horrible interface and very sony half baked implementation and pointless features/gimmicks like WiFi, on sensor PDAF instead of utilizing excellent recent advances in software AF technics that make any kind PDAF looking like an ancient crap, using acceleration sensors to simplify focus and magnification area selection, etc. And SLT is the choice of people who either own a lot of A-mount glass or beginners who buy this crap because it looks cool.
And now, instead of improving NEX for better usability and performance, they try to market it “properly”. Very narrow minded. Unfortunatelly, other japanese corps (very japanese as well) doing just as crappy cams as sony does. Japanese should be afraid, they are raising prices and things may turn to the point when it will become profitable to convert some recent excellent military tech, like french OLED high density 1 inch viewfinder that makes Sony’s 2.4 one looking like crap. Sensor tech, as was shown by CMOSIS and ST microelectronics, isn’t that hard to achieve top results. With fresh european/american ideas japanese cams will look like old mobile phones before iPhone.

7 months ago |Feeling a bit threatened by e-mount I see.
I haven’t once felt the need to use full auto – and that’s on the original NEX-5.
If you know how to set it up properly, the interface is absolutely fine. It’s not perfect obviously, but there is little need to go delving into the menus on a constant basis. I’m looking forward to Quick Navi on the NEx-6, so even less dipping into menus.
Sony keep giving me less and less reason to stick with A-mount. I have a nice selection of A-mount lenses which can be used with the LA-EA2 adapter for the time being, so I wonder if I’ll ever purchase a new A-mount body again.

7 months ago |Its funny but it always seams that the people who can afford expensive cameras don’t know how to use them. I met more than a few people at events with more advanced cameras than mine shooting with on board flash in auto mode and not knowing what a speed flash was or why they should get one and of course shooting with a kit lens. This really hurts me deep inside to see such a waste.

SLT range also applies to that.. and they work even better in Auto mode than their rivals!!!!!!!

7 months ago |I have 2 thoughts:
1. The advert makes EXACTLY the point it was supposed to. I think it’s brilliant. Pricewise, their is overlap between NEX and SLT so a buyer may end up spending more on a Sony product if opting for NEX 6 or 7.
2. Some of the commenters on this forum take life WAY too seriously!!

7 months ago |People in general don’t research products themselves so they chat to trusted advisors or friends. These are usually people who are part of our community who are the best at photography and whose ability they/we seek to mimic, I know I do that in things other than technology. But I loved this video, far better than the other they had. Only the Aussies would make you put up a fail sign lol.

7 months ago |I own the Sony A77 and use it exclusively in manual but I’ve recently been considering selling it and my infrared converted A200 and buying two NEX cameras instead, with one of them converted to infrared. The thing that’s giving me doubts is the range of available OS lenses.
I think the Ad works in that it’s telling DSLR newby owners that there’s an alternative that they may not have considered. It’s telling me, an advanced amateur that there’s an alternative that I should perhaps consider.
Will the Ad hurt A mount sales? I think the battle ground for customers is going moving towards quality compact cameras and away from the traditional DSLR. That sector will become more competitive when FF compacts become more available.
