Hi Folks,

First-time poster, so be gentle! :-)

I currently own an A390 and an A580. I tried out the EVF of the A77 in a shop and my first reaction was "Yuk!"; the EVF just couldn't handle the high-contrast view of looking out the shop window at a scene which was 50% in bright sunshine and 50% in indoor lighting. I just can't afford an A900 at the moment, even second-hand, so the A580 was the next best thing for me, the last(???) of Sony's DSLR's. Personally speaking, I just wouldn't buy an EVF just now as I just don't think they are anywhere near acceptably good enough just yet. Just my opinion of course. Perhaps in the future.

Now, I am not an 'EVF-hater' and I am open enough to appreciate the advantages it can bring, however, for me a camera has got to feel and look right as well as taking awesome pictures. My A580 has a reasonably good OVF view (and is improved by an OVF magnifier) and takes wonderful pictures, and in fact I rarely take pictures using the screen and much prefer looking through the OVF. (Call me old-fashioned if you must.) The A580 actually has 3 Focus Modes, and I am hoping that this rumour will move forward some of the technology used on the A580 (e.g. separate focus sensor etc.).

My ideal camera (Are you listening Sony?) would have the not-bettered awesome OVF of the A900 AND would also include an EVF view that could be SWITCHED-IN, a bit like a Heads-Up Display in a Fighter Aircraft if you like. It would also have from 16MP to 25MP (I really don't need any more than this) and an amazing high-ISO and low-noise performance. It would also be speedy with fast AF response and be capable of churning out at least 7fps in RAW + jpeg. The price. of course, would also be extremely competitive. Micro-focus adjust for every Sony/Minolta Lens I own is a must. Being able to switch an EVF view ON AND OFF would give me the best of both worlds! (And it would also greatly improve battery drain as I would only use the EVF when I really wanted it. Do I want to have my cake and eat it? Absolutely!!! (Also, I can take-or-leave video, I'm not that interested and just want to take great pictures. If I want a video camera, I'll get a separate video camera to excel at just that.)

I think such a camera would not only blow CaNikon out of the water, but would give every Sony/Minolta user an upgrade path to be drooled over, regardless of their love/hate relationship with the EVF!!!!!

Apologies for not posting this earlier, but it was only after trying to post twice before I realised I needed to register first. Doh!

Best Regards,

Sony may sell more high end cameras if it has at least two (maybe three) models available - and some will or could have OVF or EVF, depending on which is most advantageous (real or perceived) in each model. If I was shooting a lot of video, then the current system in the A99 is ideal. An event camera (with lower megapixels, and higher iso required) that emphasizes stills may be best if fitted with and OVF. A landscape stills camera should have higher megapixels (54 meg, if Bayer sensor is used, and less if a Foveon-like sensor employed), then an OVF (with a boffo MLU) is great! I really feel that an all-in-one flagship model can't deliver all the features adequately, and that diversification is important. The bean counters will disagree, as they want only have one rationale (cost or profit per segment), and don't understand the business. A good analogy might be automobiles - there are small ones for better economy and space use, and trucks for carrying things, and suv's, etc. Each segment also has low to high end cost models. Selling one kind of car in each segment will only mean that there will be lower total sales, or no sales if the company doesn't stimulate the imagination of the consumer and get their attention. Sony has not got the attention of the vast majority of the public, even though they have worthy products in many segments. I suggest they need to grab headlines by simply producing "best" products - and stop pissing away their advantage by only offering their "best" sensors to other manufacturers (D800/E, and now potentially a high end square sensor to Hassie).
