Crazy fast FE lens poll: Which f/1.2 prime or f/2.0 zoom should Sony make for you?

Share

Nikon is bragging that their mount allows the design of f/0,65 autofocus lenses, Canon made big splash with their 28-70mm f/2.0 lens. Yesterday Sony re-confirmed that there is no technical limitation for them to make even faster lenses as long it makes sense from a business point of view. And Mr.Tanaka hinted that they might launch some new f/1.2 autofocus primes.

So let us know which crazy fast lens Sony should do but please also keep in mind that these would be very expensive lenses…$2,500+ and maybe some $3,000+:

I would liek Sony to make me this...(select max of 3 lenses)

Sony manager says we can do f/1.0 lenses but f/1.2 would make more sense. Also new telephoto lens is coming soon!

Share

Sony manager Kenji Tanaka has been interviewed by Amateur Photographer. He shared some interesting thoughts and info:

About the mount diameter discussion: “The diameter of lens doesn’t matter. Honestly speaking it is very difficult to create a small size mount. But the quality of our new 400mm f/2.8 is better than the competitors. That means the diameter of the mount is not critical for our foremost lenses.”

About doing faster primes: “Maybe some demand exists for an f/1.2, but an f/1.0? Technically we could produce an f/1.0, but it would not make business sense.”

About the new comptition:  “Of course we are planning new models but honestly speaking, I don’t care about competitors. We care about our customer’s voice. A lot of our customers have given us feedback and we will create new products based on that.”

About new telephoto lenses: “We recently launched the 400mm f/2.8 for sports shooters and we are planning to develop another lens for this segment.”

About the size of the A7-A9 camera: “bigger cameras, that is not the Sony philosophy, and maybe another product might be better for them.”

I am not surprise to hear Sony considering to make f/1.2 primes. I am a bit more surprised to hear that Mr. Tanaka categorically excluded to make bigger cameras. I believe that at the end they will simply do slow incremental increases on every generation…

Competiton rumors: Panasonic S1R prices above the Sony A7rIII. New Canon High-rez camera and Nikon f/0,65 lens

Share

We got some interesting rumors from the direct Sony competition:

Panasonic:
Sankei believes Panasonic S1R price is above $4,000+ (MirrorlessRumors). This is considerably more expensive than the A7rIII. Yes, the Panasonic will have 4k60p and probably better weathersealing. But autofocus is unlikely to be as good as the Sony and I doubt at this price many will buy this camera.

Canon:
Canon EOS-R will announce a new High Resolution camera in 2019. Probably with 60+ Megapixels (MirrorlessRumors).

Nikon:
Nikon marketing is working hard to pass the message that their larger mount is better. They now say that “In theory” they could make f/0,65 Z-mount autofocus lenses! (MirrorlessRumors). But of course this is just marketing BS because in reality there will be never such a fast lens. Even their current f/0,95 lens can only be made without autofocus and is extremely big:

I am now curious to see if Sony will “update” their cameras with some of the features you see on the new FF competition: An example could be the addition of th LCD top screen and the larger grip.

First review of the new Lensbaby SOL 45 for Sony A and E-mount cameras

Share

Some time ago Lensbaby announced a new SOL 45 lens which you can preorder as A-mount or E-mount version at BHphoto and WexUK.

Marc Alhadeff is the first posteing a full review of this lens on Sonyalpha.blog. And this seems to be a very decent lens:

This Lensbaby Sol 45mm F3.5 (200 euros) is really a surprising lens.

On other Lensbaby lenses I often found that effects were too much present or that sharpness was really below average

With the Sol 45, it seems Lensbaby has found the perfect balance with nice creamy blurry background, very sharp subject in focus and very nice color rendition. The atmosphere created is very nice and give picture full of emotions

In addition you have

  • Some tilt possibilities.
  • Bokeh blades that are a nice addition, to get some alternatives background
  • You can also play with flare if you want, with some nice effect with the sun.

I showed some photos to some friends and they thought is was : a 85 F1.8, a 70-200 F2.8, a 50 F1 !

The lens is very well built and easy to use : at 200 euros it open a world of creative possibilities without overdoing it for the bokeh effects

Immediately after returning my test lens , I order one for me ! Highly recommended
