24-105mm FE review by Opticallimits: ” it is superior to both the Canon and Nikon “

Share

Opticallimits (former Photozone) is a damn serious review site that has no fear to destroy a lens reputation when it deserves it. But luckily the 24-105mm FE managed to impress them:

Overall the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is an obvious choice in the Sony lineup. It may not be able to touch the center quality of the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM but the border quality is surprisingly high for such a lens – at least when stopping down to f/5.6. Lateral CAs are moderate. The quality of the bokeh is quite good for a lens within its scope.

The Sony lens isn’t flawless but just to provide a framework for comparison – it is superior to both the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS II and Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/4G VR. So it’s certainly a lens we can recommend to Sony FE users.

“This was worth the wait after sunset on Christmas Day 2015. The moonrise between El Capitan and Three Brothers in Yosemite along the Merced River. I had so much frost on my 16-35 f4 waiting, I had to remove it and use a Rokinon 24mm f1.4 backup lens on my Sony A7RII.”

Fuji gets serious in Video with their new X-H1 (leaked specs). Sony has to step up the game!

Share

After Panasonic (GH5s) also Fuji is going into the pure cine world and they will release the new X-H1 next week. The news matters because Sony can no longer sit comfortably on their throne.  The Fuji X-H1 has many strong points:

  1. Fuji is smart enough to launch the X-H1 along two dedicated 18-55mm and 50-135mm t/2.9 zoom lenses. Sony still has to offer something similar for the A6xxx series!
  2. The X-H1 has dual card slot, F-LOG, 200Mbps and a nice large body. The Sony A6700 needs to get dual SD card too.

I think it’s seriously time for Sony to consider to launch both he A6700 and the A7sIII. The A7sIII is likely to be announced in April while we have no clue yet when the A6700 could be announced.

Fuji X-H1 specs:

– 5-axis hand shake correction with effect of up to 5.5 steps
– Electronic front curtain shutter, electronic shutter
– 24.3 MP, X-Trans CMOS III sensor
– X-Processor PRO
– a rugged magnesium alloy body
– EVF is 3.69 million dots, the maximum framelet is 100 fps, the response is 0.005 seconds
– 3 inch 1.04 million dot touch type liquid crystal monitor
– Film Simulation ETERNA
– Cinema 4K 24 fps, 4 K 30 fps
– 120 fps slow motion video in full HD
– F-log (can be recorded on F-Log directly to SD card at 4K)
– Video bit rate up to 200 Mbps
– Built-in high-performance microphone
– Improvement of AF algorithm
– ISO 200 – 12800 (ISO100, 25600, 51200 in extension)

Justin:This is a fun review of the a6500 – i.e. the poor man’s 1DX Mk II. Great 120fps shooting with stellar autofocus, good looking 4K, strong IBIS, but like the 1DX Mk II (and every decent Sony camera), no flip-out screen. Makes for great cinematic-style vlogs.
