Mr. Kenta Honjo no longer works for Sony

Share

SAR reader Federico sent me this:

Mr. Kenta Honjo, famous marketing guy from Sony Electronics in San Diego, CA. has just moved away from Sony to take a new position as Product Marketing Manager at RED, the revolutionary cine/video camera company, also in California.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/kentahonjo

Kenta has been notorious for his role in many YouTube and Sony’s own social media channel videos, always explaining with great detail new products. He also was instrumental in Sony’s marketing of the new RX and especially the Alpha line of cameras in the USA, which was actually critical for Sony to have a true global success with their mirrorless models, especially since so many consumers, fans, photographers, bloggers/vloggers and Pros hold the US market as a reference for the industry, online retailing, pricing, product evaluations and for influencers as well.

Having worked at Sony myself, I have to say I’m rather surprised by his move, by I suspect his career outlook wasn’t in symmetrical proportion to his outstanding efforts and more than multiple responsibilities in P.R., social media, event planning, marketing & business analysis (historically a very demanding job within Sony to the point of requiring dedicated people due to the sheer amount of data collected monthly), especially considering the rate of business growth and pace of model announcements.

Anyhow, I thought I’d mention it since the guy’s so recognizable from all of his participation in product launches, events and social media.
He’s a great and hard working guy, so I know he’ll do great at RED, and it’ll be a loss for Sony.

Cheers!

My thoughts on this: I liked Kenta and I will surely miss him.

Dpreview apologies: “Sony a9 is sharper than we thought”

Share

SAR readers already noted that in their Sony A9 review the studio shots looked somewhat soft or slightly out of focus. Well Dpreview just issued this statement

The lens was not optimally focused….To make a long story short, we’ve re-shot our studio scene shots of the Sony a9 with the FE 85/1.8 lens, and they’re much sharper. We apologize for misleading any of our readers, but it’s a long story..

You can check the update studio shots here: dpreview.com/reviews/sony-a9-full-review/5

In little over a month the Sony A9 had to hold the pressure of overheating stories, banding and the Dpreview soft shots. Seems like at the end everything got clear and we can finally talk about the many good things of the A9 :)

Specs comparison: Future Sony A7III versus the soon to be announced Canon 6DII

Share

Sony’s next A7III camera will be announced in October-November. And it will be in the same pricing class of the soon to be announced new 6DmarkII (full specs and images at CanonWatch). So here is the question: Will the A7III trump the 6D mark II? Let’s compare the rumored specs:

  1. Sensor (A7III wins):
The Canon has a 26MP sensor and the A7III will have a new 24MP sensor. I expect the Sony sensor to beat the Canon.
  2. Autofocus (A7III wins):
The Canon has Dual pixel CMOS AF and 45 points cross type AF. The Sony A7III will have a much improved autofocus system. one of the sources even heard that it might have the same A9 AF system. If that’s the case the A7III will win
  3. Burst rate (on par)
6.5fps for the Canon while the A7II should be on par with it (6-7fps)
  4. Video (A7III wins):
1080p for the Canon. Yes, in 2017 Canon is still giving you no 4K on a $2,000 camera! Of course we know the A7III is going to have 4K.
  5. ISO range (on par)
Canon goes up to 102.400. Sony should do the same
  6. Stabilization (A7III wins):
5 axis electronic image stabilization on the Canon. Come one, you know that’s never going to be as good as a hardware stabilization system
  7. Display (probably Canon wins):
Canon has a vari-angle angle screen. I am not sure the A7III will change their current tiltable screen mechanism. If they don’t the Canon will be superior. Also the Touch Panel of the Canon could be superior to the baby-version of the Sony.
  8. Ergonomic (Canon wins):
It’s unclear if the A7III will keep the same A7II design or have the new A9 ergonomic. Any way, the Canon is still more ergonomic.

Any thought on this?
