Some fake A9 rendering found on the web

Sometimes anonymous rumor are worth to be mentioned if they are unlikely to happen. I just got this from a new source and therefore just take it super easy:

A A9R with a full format sensor featuring only 2.4µm pixels. That results in an astonishing 150MP total sensor size.
But here is the kicker it will feature a “low res” mode where 4 pixels are coupled analog – resulting in a 37MP sensor with 2 fstops more sensitivity and dynamic range.

The rumor may be unlikely but that Sony can do that is certainly possible!

Zeiss announces Lens Gear Rings to turn camera lenses into movie lenses in a flash!

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2016-04-18 um 11.35.10

Zeiss announced new Lens Gear Rings to turn Otus, Milvus and Loxia lenses into movie lenses with follow focus systems. Here is the press text:

The ZEISS Otus, ZEISS Milvus and ZEISS Loxia lenses are now also compatible with follow focus systems. How? The new ZEISS Lens Gear Rings in the four sizes mini, small, medium and large turn camera lenses into movie lenses in a flash.

ZEISS Lens Gears boast impressive versatility and no-fuss mounting
The ZEISS Lens Gear Rings are made of premium aluminum with a hardened surface coating, are slid onto the relevant lens and attached to the focus ring of the lens simply by turning the two counteracting rings. “This means the ZEISS Lens Gears can be attached in a flash – and you don’t even need any tools to do so,” explains Christophe Casenave, Product Manager at ZEISS Camera Lenses.

Four different sizes for all ZEISS Otus, ZEISS Milvus and ZEISS Loxia lenses
The ZEISS Lens Gears are available in four different sizes: mini, small, medium and large. “They fit on the different lenses of various diameters precisely and securely,” continues Casenave. “The use of a follow focus system enables optimal focusing, and the ZEISS camera lenses receive functions resembling those of a full-fledged movie lens.” This now allows customers to achieve professional results with the camera lenses and makes any handling difficulties a thing of the past.
The ZEISS Lens Gears are supplied with a rubber-covered band, the GumGum, which features an adhesive surface. This means the inner diameter can be reduced accordingly, thus supporting other lens sizes. The GumGum also protects against scratches and other damage to the focus ring of the lens.

The benefits at a glance:
Quick mounting – no tools needed
Made of lightweight aluminum
Hardened surface coating
Features a 0.8 pitched gear
Follow focus runs smoother than ever before
No more screwdrivers, worn-out belts or protruding straps

Sony had a major press event at the NAB show in Las Vegas. There was no photo camera or E-mount lens announcement. All we got are new camcorder like the very High End HDC-4800. Here is the Sony press text: blog.sony.com/press/sony-goes-beyond-definition-at-nab-2016/

But don’t be upset. We are now used to see Sony announce major E-mount stuff off such events. Example: The Sony A6300 and GM lenses got announced just weeks after the big CP+ show. So let’s hope Sony will unveil some surprise soon.

Note: Bh just launched the NAB deals: You get $100 gift card for free with the new Sony A6300.

Batis 18mm tests by Christian Dandyk, Brian Matiash, Diglloyd and David Clifford

The new Batis 18mm used by
David Clifford

Four Zeiss ambassadors posted image samples and previews of the new Batis 18mm f/2.8 lens. Here is where you can preorder the lens:
in USA at BHphoto. Adorama. FocusCamera.
in Europe at Amazon.de. Photo Porst. ParkcamerasUK.
Zeiss Lens Shade for Batis 18mm F2.8 Lens at Adorama.

David Clifford posted the image you above (lens in the snow). He used the new Batis 18mm in harsh conditions and writes:

It was an amazingly sharp, well built, weather sealed, fast and accurate auto focus which was a dream to use. 18mm is one of my favorite focal lengths. It’s super wide with minimal distortion. In fact when I was using Canon I picked up a Zeiss 18mm 3.5 lens because my 16-35 was not very sharp at all. I quickly replaced my 16-35 with an 18mm and a 28mm. I felt much better carrying 2 small light fast primes than risking soft shots wide open in late light for clients. With 5 axis image stabilizer and the 42 mega pixel files it’s rivaling medium format for a fraction of the cost. Thank Zeiss for constant pushing to make superior lenses that do exactly what I need.

Christian Dandyk tested the lens and writes:

Just as photography is a very diverse field, so too are the applications for which the ZEISS Batis 2.8/18 can be used. For example, thanks to its large field of vision with extremely low distortion, it’s perfect for architectural photography. The ZEISS Batis 2.8/18 fulfilled a long-held wish he had had for a wide angle with excellent imaging performance.

Diglloyd posted a full review of the lens (for subscribers only). And his conclusion is:

The Zeiss Batis 18mm f/2.8 Distagon is the finest 18mm lens ever to be produced for full frame cameras.

Brian Matiash posted an introduction with image samples:

All in all, I was exceptionally impressed with the performance of this lens and the image quality it produced.

I know those are Zeiss ambassadors reviewing the lens. So some may have concerns about the value of such reviews. But I am 100% confident the new Batis 18mm is as good as all four photographers are saying it is!
