New Sony interview at DC.watch and Newswitch.jp: “We have dozen of lenses on our roadmap”

Share

Newswitch.jp has interviewed Mr. Yasuyuki Nagata from Sony. Here are a couple of info:

  • Sony sees potential in the High End Mirrorless Camera and Lens market.
  • Response to the 200-600mm FE lens launch was  “greater than expected”
  • There are still a dozen of lenses that  we want to make (that  are on our roadmap). Expansion willbe “horizontal” which means extension of current lens lineups (for example f/1.8 FE range  could be extended to 20mm 24mm  f/1.8 and so forth (Interpretation by Asobinet).
  • Cost  for lenses has increased to the more advanced design and  material used
  • the demand for APS-C cameras is high because of the 1 mount strategy that makes it easy to use same lenses on different cameras (FF, APS-C and Camcorders).
  • The demand for  high  end fixed lens cameras hasn’t decreased significantly  and sales of RX cameras are growing in some regions

DC.watch interviewed Kenji Tanaka and this is what he said:

  • Sony will always try to keep cameras as small as it gets.
  • Yes it’s  possible that Sony will make GM branded APS-C lenses..

PhotoPlus mystery may be solved: Sony will not be there but Sony Artisans will. Sony will have A9II launch event on same period!

Share

As you know Sony is not listed as exhibitor at the PhotoPlus show. A couple of days ago Sony officially told to Petapixel that they “will be officially listed on there either later today or tomorrow“.

But 5 days after the website has still not be updated and from the floor map it really seems like there is even no space left for Sony anyway. I guess someone at Sony is making a mess or confusion.

Luckily a source was kind enough to tell me what’s going on. This is what he told me tonight (Thanks!):

“Just thought you might want to know that they’ll have their own separate venue for an event that same weekend.
Sony Artisans will still be involved with the show but Sony will not have any presence at the Expo itself. “

In summary:
– Sony A9II will be announced exactly the same period as the PhotoPlus show but not AT the Photoplus show
– Sony Artisans will be present and have conferences and likely even discuss and show the A9II. But there will be no direct Sony booth.

Sorry Sony but nobody really likes your Imaging Edge software. Thankfully today we got an alternative to create our High Resolution images:

And I know Sony Tokyo is reading me so please take this note: Add Pixel Shift in camera creation just like Panasonic does on their S cameras. Thanks!

Special Thanks to Iliah Borg for making this piece of software!

Let’s digg into the possible Sony 36MP sensor specs and performance!

Share

I am sure the A9II will be announced in October but I am yet not 100% sure which sensor it will use. There is a fair chance the A9II will use this IMX435 36MP sensor registered end of 2018. So let’s digg into the specs:

  • 36MP sensor
  • 10fps  at 16 Bit. But frame rate goes up at 14bits!
  • It has 6 native sensitivities (from base to top as seen in the table):
    ISO50 = Conversion Gain -18dB, EI +12dB, DR 17.4EV
    ISO200 = Conversion Gain 0dB, EI +6dB, DR 15.4EV
    ISO800 = Conversion Gain +18dB, EI 0dB, DR 13.4EV
    ISO12800 = Conversion Gain +36dB, EI +6dB
    ISO102400 = Conversion Gain +54dB, EI +6dB
    ISO1638.4K = Conversion Gain +72dB, EI +24dB
  • IMX435 STARVIS use Hecx Native Conversion Gain to Produce more SNR in Dark Scene: (ISO 15 ~ 17.5EV/ISO 100 ~ 15.4EV/…/ISO 409600 ~ 6.9EV)
  • If readout all Conversion Gain, the Landscape can be extended to 120dB, like the high SNR sensor sony displayed on IEDM 2018. But IMX435 seems impossible to do this. It’s not a still picture style sensor.
  • Its full well capacity at base is particularly impressive at 605k e-, A7SII sensor IMX235 is “only” 159K e- with much bigger photosite. This again highlights the power of Exmor RS.”

Sony A9II rumor recap:
– The camera will be announced in October (probably around mid October)
– The camera has the same A7rIV body with additional dial on the left.
– The big improvements are INSIDE the camera with a very new generation Sony sensor and improved autofocus
– Unconfirmed: The sensor could have 36MP resolution and the camera price be close to $5,000.
