PDN: Canon and Nikon users should be jealous of the A77! NYT likes the NEX-7.
Sony NEX-7. A Matter of Size from The Luminous Landscape on Vimeo.
PDN (Click here) reviewed the A77: “Throw in its remarkable ability to capture tack-sharp fast-action HD video and more surprising bells and whistles than an amusement park, and you have a Sony DSLR that should make Canon and Nikon users jealous. When was the last time you could say that?”
Luminous Landsape (Click here) made a video of the NEX-7 (you see it here on top of this post). And Steve Huff (Click here) posted a depth of field comparison. Also the New York Times (Click here) writes about the NEX-7: “This camera is gorgeous. Black metal, like something James Bond might carry. Yet here is, yes, a built-in pop-up flash. It won’t exactly illuminate a football stadium, but it’s fine for subjects up to about eight feet away.”
So many good reviews and no camera! but be patient, Sony is doing a 24 hours job to get back to full production. In January the cameras will be back in store!

6 months ago |Jealous of a DSLR that restricts more light to the sensor than any other DSLR? Stick with the NEX Sony, you’re on the right path.
David
6 months ago |Maybe one that doesn’t have an antiquated system of mirror flipping, allowing it to have better autofocus capabilities? Or one that has an EVF which gives you live preview, a histogram, spirit level and tons of other features to help you get your shot.
Sounds good to me.

6 months ago |Haha. The SLT is an antiquated technique to improve Reflex camera performance. Google “pellicle mirror”
On the other hand, Nikon has new technology, first implemented on the “1″ series mirrorless cams that implements the phase detection AF right on the sensor doing away with a need for the light robbing, dirt accumulating SLT mirror and the 1980′s AF sensor array.
So if Sony had invented a working on-sensor AF detection mechanism that had great performance on APS-C and Full Frame, they would not have needed SLT mirrors at all and none of your fanboy support would be needed.
The perfection of Nikon’s on-sensor AF technology would result in SLRs of the future (both APS-C and FullFrame) with zero-light loss from SLT mirror, very fast and accurate phase detection without ever a case of front or back focus, combination phase detection and contrast detection as needed, very large number of AF points and very little effect on the dual-purpose image/AF sensor pixels. Perhaps, pixels that can be switched between image and AF functionality on the fly.
SLT is already a dead-end technology when it was released. It is only a temporary measure. Think of it as a good “hack” to a problem but not an ultimate solution.

Dan
6 months ago |You forgot factual. Light is rule #1 in photography and everything else is a distant second. That makes the NEX-7/5N > A77.
BTW, I’m sure your limited intelligence can come up with a better retort than just calling people names.
solo
6 months ago |Making such a generalized statement like “NEX-7/5N > A77″ simply because of a 1/3 stop loss of light is silly and simply stupid. They are different cameras for different purposes, each better for certain scenarios.
Bottomline great photos are made by the photographer, not the gear, especially not when the difference is a miniscule amount of light. Do you suddenly hate all of your images once a superior sensor is released?

6 months ago |Actually it seems like Tamron and Sigma forgot about NEX system. Weren’t they supposed to announce lenses a while ago?
Vivek
6 months ago |The first “review” that I glanced talks about the similarities between the NEX-7 and the earlier ones- the unfriendly user interface. Interesting.

Very happy with my 1DIII, does everything I ask of it or need of it.
I do have a NEX 7 on order for all my manual glass, waiting for a FF NEX!
solo
6 months ago |I bet your 1DIII is fantastic but surely you took into consideration the massive difference in price?
That’s like an F18 pilot scoffing at my cousin’s Cessna.
J-Man
6 months ago |Ok, pricing is aimed at a different market, but it still mostly holds true for my 40D.

6 months ago |any announcement of FF would take the wind from the A77s sails, which is, and will stay, their flagship for some time yet.
It is unusual to see anyone to even dare give a Sony (or any non canikon camera) praise over the market, but again we see high praise for the A77. We should be happy, right?

6 months ago |Thinking of olypus pen3, would like a nex5n, but lack of lenses will keep me away. Shame:-(
solo
6 months ago |the size of the pen is nice but considering they want more $ than for a nex c3, especially considering the sensor is 1/13 the size, I will stay away.

6 months ago |Not a smart business move if Sigma and Tamron don’t jump into this new lens market soon, seeing as the sales of mirroless systems such as NEX are booming.

6 months ago |I’m not jealous with the a77…. While I play it at the Sony showroom , my mind told me that…..not as good as I though…
What made me jealous is Sony have a nice mirrorless system that canon didn’t have ……not only NEX5. But also the NEX 7 . Oh come on. Canon….

6 months ago |Does no one use lens shades/hoods any longer?
I wish they’d stop talking about “pocket-ability” when none of them are with a shade attached. Sure, broken down into three pockets, all of them would.
It’s enough to save weight and get more gear into a smaller lighter bag. But “pocket-ability” is still the realm of P&S compacts. I look for the day of Oly XA FF digital compacts. That’s where CaNikon can trump Sony if they get on it quickly.
Vivek
6 months ago |“Sure, broken down into three pockets, all of them would.”
To be honest, I do not have any pocket large enough for the kitzoom, even without a hood.
solo
6 months ago |quite honestly I don’t give the slightest damn if it ‘FITS’ in my pocket. Is it really so inconvenient to have a camera hanging around your neck? … hold on, won’t that be ideal if you are using it to take pictures?!
Size does not bother me, the WEIGHT is what bothers me. I love the size of my A850, battery grip, 58AM, and CZ24-70. It fits my hands perfectly and allows me the most manual controls out of any other dSLR out there. I do however wish it weighed 10 times less… carbon-fibre helium-filled cameras anyone?
At any rate the NEX series has already ticked this for me. Given their features and light-weight, I don’t give a rats ass if it can’t fit in my pants pocket. How is that a deal-breaker???

6 months ago |Clearly we’re not speaking about literally pocketable gear. But it’s fashionable to call it this way nowadays..

6 months ago |Infos, some A77 are available on http://www.ubaldi.com, I’ve got mine in 2 days, still have to touch it to realize that it’s true, some if you want, go there, they may still have some remains …

6 months ago |Make some quality lenses, add built-in GPS into the NEX and Sony can join the ranks of Nikon and Canon. Until then, they’re still just competing with m43, with whom they have a stronger lead now. They shouldn’t be competing with m43 with size. Go for the bigger fishes (Canikon). I wont’ mind extra size if it’ll allow better battery and better use of the sensor and GPS.
J-Man
6 months ago |“Does no one use lens shades/hoods any longer?”
I do sometimes, depends on the lens, and what I’m trying to shoot, I actually like lens flare once in a while for artistic effect, and makes my kit smaller when I go hood free.
Jiri
6 months ago |I use my DSLR lenses almost always with UV filters and sun shades just to protect their front elements against accidental touches. I think I will do the same with NEX.
J-Man
6 months ago |My L glass gets hoods and protection filters, but my vintage manual goes nekid.
If/when I get E mount Glass, I will prob use hoods.

6 months ago |I got an email that my pre-order for the Nex 7 is scheduled to be shipped on or “around” Dec. 03, but I’m starting to get skeptical. I know it’s supposed to hit stores in January, but what about us pre-orders? Any news on that front? Did anyone receive any pre-orders as a matter of fact?

“Thank you for your recent Sony purchase.
We would like to inform you we are experiencing a delay with your Sony order. The following item LCSBBF/B has been rescheduled to ship on 12/03/2011.”
I got similar notes in October and November too.
Haha… Sigh.

Have they really tested it? I have my A77 right here and used it for several projects – tack sharp is really something else but not the video of the A77. It’s more “soft” or “muddy”

6 months ago |Well, if Sony had made the Nex-7 dust and splash proof, then I’d be jealous. But they didn’t. So, for the traveller, and those who like to climb mountains, or wander in tropical forest, we still have to rely on bigger, heavier DSLRs! Too bad.
I wonder, was it so much more expensive to make the Nex-7, and the lenses that go with it dust and splash proof?

6 months ago |I went to a local camera show and they had the NEX-7 there
