Phil Molyneux (Sony) says the A77 and NEX-7 should arrive in January. Understimated the camera production.
According to The Verge Sony USA COO Phil Molyneux said that the NEX-7 will arrive in January. And Financial Times reports another statement from Phil M.: “We’re furiously working to transfer production back to Japan and into China, so I think we’ll see better availability going into January“. Currently Sony is having a reserve of NEX-C3 and NEX-5n cameras but the NEX-5n stocks could be empty soon!
The last info I got from my top sources said that the A77 will be back in Stock in January and the NEX-7 in February. And yes, Sony underestimated the A77 and NEX-7 production. The cameras got more preorders than they thought and in some countries the A77 and NEX-7 request has been four times higher than expected. I hope that Sony will be able to catch up again the momentum. Really pity for them that they miss the Christmas sales. The A65 and A77 are out of Stock in most countries. Only the new NEX-5n and the lenses will be available by Christmas time. Check out the links to find out what’s available and what not:

-Proof that smaller isn’t always better. No one would care about the NEX-7 if the NEX-5 looked and felt like the Fuji x100 or even something as big as the Leica M9.

+1
(It may be better for the PR fellas and such.. the NEX’s- ie., 3, 5, C3&5n- though very pretty are not that useful tools).

Wow.
Now there’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Dan, you may be the first person on the planet to equate the Leica M9 with the word “big”. Have you been shooting with cellphones your entire life?

6 months ago |I beg to differ. The 5N not only is a great still camera but a great video capture device as well. And to extend the small is great discussion, the GoPro HD 2, a small camera, just inspires so much creativity. The 5N may not be the end all tool for everyone, but it is ectremely capable.

6 months ago |Does that mean A77 will be made in Japan?
Ollder
6 months ago |That “Japan” sounds good, but January sounds sad. Maybe I should pick up one body only as it seem still to be available in my reseller…

6 months ago |Apparently, A77 was originally Made in Japan until manufacturing was move to Thailand. See Dpreview of the thread and evidence.

6 months ago |Hi, just wanted to let you know that at least in germany, you can get the A65VK (incl. 18-55) at saturn.de online Store.
Additionally, you can find it in the Store itself (at least in Dresden/Germany) as well as you can find the A77 at Foto Wolf, also in Dresden.
Just saying, it might be worth looking at your local shops before being disappointed for christmas

6 months ago |I was on the phone with the Sony tech support people yesterday and got transferred to the a77 specialist!! Really nice guy. Bottom line, he could not give me the answer to the f/3.5 limitation in video with af. I’m looking for the official reason for my review. Supposedly I’ll get a call today with the answer
Is it a hardware limitation with the Phase detection AF and video? or is it a Sony decision to lock it down to f/3.5 for another reason. Possible afraid to many people would record terrible video and then blame the camera for their user error. It kind sounded like the guy was hinting at this, but said he could not say until he gets the correct “verbage”.
Anybody know the “official” answer to this?
Thanks,
Jay

6 months ago |I read somewhere, though don’t have the link handy, that it was either to do with the pdaf needs enough light to operate (in stills mode it is always wide open until the shutter or dof preview button is pressed) where as in video that wouldn’t happen so limits it to a max of f3.5 or for lenses that don’t go to 3.5 it stops it to the lenses largest aperture.

If the camera has limitations why would that become “user error”?!

Thanks

6 months ago |sony underestimated production, demand was actually 4x.
if sony make NEX9 full frame at the right price point (maybe 2 models, a premium spec’ed out model, and a bang bucks plastic model) sony will underestimate production by 40x!!
Vivek
6 months ago |I hope they do not do it out of pity for some of the other camera companies!

6 months ago |Does the E-mount allow for a full frame image circle? The 18mm register distance seems to say “no”. The only way to do this would be a NEX with an Alpha mount which kinda negates the whole “compact” aspect of a CSC.
matgay
6 months ago |sony spokesman on video specifically did NOT rule it out. if it was impossible than they would straight out say no. at the very least they could also make a full frame junior. maybe 90% of full frame sensor size.
Don Cox
6 months ago |The diameter of the mount is much greater than that of full frame film cameras such as the Exakta, so that is not a problem.
The distance from the rear element to the sensor could be a problem with some lenses designed for Leica film cameras. There is no reason why it should be a problem for lenses designed for a FF NEX, unless you are a pancake fanatic.
Mike
6 months ago |Don’t forget that 18mm is the minimum register distance. Of course, it’s always possible to move the lens away from the body by just making the back of the lens longer. You don’t necessarily need an Alpha mount for that.
It may not be a small-size camera with lens then, but it certainly can be built.
Vivek
6 months ago |I have lenses that cover APS-C (for example) that have a back focus of only 5mm and without the problems associated with the (for example) Leica lenses.
I do not see any problem with the 18mm camera registry for full frame camera.
It calls for different lens and sensor designs.

6 months ago |“We asked Katsumoto if it was possible to deploy a 35mm full-frame sensor in a NEX shooter, and he answered that from a technical standpoint, it is possible, though modifications would have to be made to the lens mount. This is because the current E-mount is optimized for only APS-C-sized sensors.”
To me, that is a Japanese way of saying “No”.
Another strong hint:
No lenses are marked as DT or APS-C lenses.
Given the rate new lenses get introduced, not many would like to see a parallell line of FF lenses being introduced at an even slower pace.

Underestimated demand? Of course!
With all the bashing and trolls? Why wouldn’t they underestimate the demand?
As much as I want to keep my a700, if I have to pick one out of the two for my walks, I’d have to take a77.
