POLL: Vote the future fullframe lenses!

So here we are! I collected and summed your full frame lens suggestion made two weeks ago. As you can imagine I had to simplify the list (otherwise we would have something like 300 lenses in the poll!). Here are the things you have to know before you vote:
1) Please think before to vote and be honest! Be aware that Zeiss lenses and fast lenses will be sometimes very expensive! So vote only if you really would buy it!
2) The poll is not scientific and has a general value only. The goal is to give Sony an overview of what focal length and what aperture future full frame lenses should have.
3) The sum of all percentages you see after any lens option is higher than 100%. This happens because every voters can vote many lenses. Example: If a lens has an overall score of 34% this means that of all voters 34% voted that lens.
4) All lenses are SSM and full frame!
5) Don’t be angry with me if you don’t find the exact lens you wanted as option in this poll. What matters is the general impression. So please vote lenses that are as close as it gets to your preferred choice.
Let’s vote!!!
Select a maximum of seven lenses Sony should absolutely release!

7 months ago |It should be 400 mm f4 instead of f5.6 … then 500 f5.6..and so on…more important are ultrawide fast lenses also the 35 1.4 and 50mm for future and existing FF.

7 months ago |A travel walk around lens like 17-45mm will be nice.
A super-fast 50mm f1.0, Noctilux-killer..?
A 400mm f5.6 a lightweight nature lovers lens.
That’s all I need

7 months ago |Sony has two paths they can follow. They can copy what Canon and Nikon are doing with their lenses and make lenses with the same aperture and focal lengths, but better quality; or they can offer something they don’t. Sony can beat the pants off of Canon and Nikon if they engineered something cooler. I’m not sure what, exactly yet…

And if you mean 135 1.4 …. That´s too big to be made, and too expensive. Who in sony world would buy a 3.000 € 135mm lens?
I find interesting that 50-150 2.8, and also some fast wide primes and TS lenses.

Carlos we have the Sony 135 f1.8 Zeiss lens already. Maybe a easy choice series 135mm f2.8 for a lot cheaper would make sense. I sure hope they bring the 200mm f4 macro back!!!

7 months ago |So many at the top of the list unrealistic. Sony needs to put out quality lenses w/o the Zeiss name on them.
An F4 line and an F2 line would be ideal. Give users the option of pro or semipro quality each line should have the same lenses so you have 2 options at each size.
All these Zeiss votes and I would bet most don’t have two of the current Zeiss lenses. Emotion doesn’t put money in your pocket

That is all, thanks

Most of us could easily get by with 7 well-chosen lenses that spread the range.
Having said this it always amazes me how many posters insists on thier point of view and get nast went it comes down to lenses choices.
I say Buy the fastest and sharpest and compose your image around it.
SRL
7 months ago |The endless complaining from some posters when other posters are looking for Sony to market faster better lenses is not productive. We get it, not everyone can afford to spend $2,000 for a lenses.
Sony needs to invest in two lens product groups the first should be a competitive prices line-up of lenses. This could be as few as seven well-chosen covering a range between 24 and 400mm.
The second group would be for the professionals or others that what the best and are willing to pay for it. This would be the Zeiss and the faster G lenses.
It seems to me with everything else being equal that faster is better than slower, except that it costs more and it heaver.
Quality optics are important and can last years longer that the camera body that gets replaced every three or four years. I’ve have Minolita lenses I purched in 1985 that can still be used on my a850, so think if lenses as an investment

I was surprised not to see a high quality CZ 100/f2.8 macro.
Canon has a great one that cost about $1,000 and Nikon as a TS 50m $1,800 lens that I would love to play with.
I really wish Zeiss would produce its manual lenses for the A-Mount. I understand that the Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 100mm f/2 ZF.2 is a real nice lens and for $1,800 in better be.
I would think a CZ 100/f2 macro would cost a litte more than the manual maybe $2,000………..

I’m a wedding pro using 85/1.2 and in constant change 24/1.4 (a little bit too wide) and 35/1.4 (a little bit too narrow). A FAST 28mm would be fantastic.
redfern
7 months ago |I really think the gaps in the lineup should be the first things addressed. I’d love to see a reissue of the 100mm/2 and the 28mm/2. I really like my old Minolta 35mm/1.4 and don’t see anything wrong with it, but I know a lot of folks are clamoring for a new edition (possibly Zeiss), so that gets a vote from me, too. The CZ 24mm/2 is a wonderful lens, but I actually think the loss of a stop over the Canon and Nikon equivalents puts some people off. I’d like to see a 24mm/1.4 to be competitive. And finally, a tilt-shift would be necessary to address that omission. I’m kind of torn between 24mm and 45mm on that one.
The rest of my choices would be more of the kind of kit that shows Sony can create marvels. Much like the 135mm/1.8 is a best-in-class lens, I’d like to see a 200mm/2.
I didn’t really vote for cheap options here, just because I think you can get most of that already, either from Sony or from Tamron/Sigma/Samyang. And in the end, when you buy cheaper you almost always end up wanting more eventually, so you end up buying twice. At this point, having gone through that a few times, I’d rather save up my money and invest in lenses that I’ll be happy with for years, like my old Minoltas were for me.
I wouldn’t mind seeing more “Easy Choice” lenses for the APS-C cams, though. Those tend to have really nice optics for cheap and make for good travel lenses. But for the FF lenses, let’s be “in it to win it.”

7 months ago |A hard plastic with weather sealed lenses with constant apperture of f3.5 or f4 will do, at least it will cost less than steel body lenses and will be a good marketing point for Sony to people like me which has limited budget for photography. In my country people are still affraid (but increases a lot thanks to NEX) to use Alpha system because lenses are limited and it usually costs almost 2x higher compared to the price in HK or US (certified Sony dealer).
For the unrealistic wish list I want a 10-300 f2.8 for 500 usd, it will kill other manufacturers in a blink of an eye hahahaha…
Daemonius
7 months ago |I think that Sony quite misses TS-E lens (wide-angle), decent 50mm prime (f1.4 isnt bad.. but neither great), some basic long prime 200mm f2.8 (they must have somewhere old HS G design from Minolta), new “Beercan” 70-200mm F4 (which is probably one of most sold Canon lens). And maybe better portrait lens? 85mm f1.2, but not that much needed STF and 135mm f1.8 is absolutely superb even now (thats one reason why portrait pro should buy Sony).
Yea and old 200mm f4 Macro was great lens, wouldnt be bad to re-introduce it (reminds me, that 100mm f2 was too.. and not just great macro, but great portrait too).
Bit more Zeiss primes would be nice, but whats mostly sold are cheaper-good lens like 70-200mm f4.

7 months ago |I do hope sony release more budget f1.8-f2 lenses. Having f1.4 glass is nice and all but honestly with such thin DOF I’m amazed people find f1.4 usable on APS-C cameras let alone on full frame.
Sony could do with a modern replacement for the minolta 28-135mm (ideally having it start at 24mm)
SRL
7 months ago |Well..
Is this about the cost or DOF?
If its DOF then shoot at f/2 or higher
DOF is one of the reason to buy a f1.4
Canon and others have f1.2
A fast lens is usfull if you like me shoot a great amount of street in low light.
It takes time it learn how to best use a fast lens, but if its a good lense like the Zeiss 85/f1.4 and you pick your shots it can make for great photography.
Sony has many low cost primes and Sigma makes several good ones at very good prices.
godsakes
7 months ago |It’s both cost & DOF – you don’t need to point out you can stop down a f1.4 to achieve a deeper DOF… my point is I’m amazed people obsess about f1.4 (or wider) when it costs so much more and must be so hard to utilise.
Well sony’s recent budget primes (the decent ones anyway) have mostly been APS-C (I love the 35mm/50mm f1.8s but not much good on FF). It was also disappointing to see the 85mm at f2.8, would have been nice to see it at f1.8-2. You might as well go for a tamron 90mm macro and benefit from the macro focusing.
Carl
7 months ago |Some photographers actively desire thinner depth of field. It’s an artistic effect that some care for and some don’t.
But while a fast lens can always be stopped down, there’s no way to make a lens that’s too slow for a given composition faster.

Though this is probably technically impossible at the moment without making the filter thread about 140mm, but it would be so cool!
Carl
7 months ago |It would probably be optically shitty at that sort of price point. Correcting aberrations becomes exponentially more expensive to do the faster a lens is.

7 months ago |Are you sure this is the wishlist of a general sonyalpha user? I’m seeing so many redundant options T.T
prices aside, i don’t think general users need that many varient of a lens i.e. 50mm
This poll is bringing us nowhere….
Carl
7 months ago |The poll is for full frame lenses, which is hardly something the general Sony userbase will be interested in. Most users make do with an APS camera and slower zoom(s).
PEN
7 months ago |No offenses but, if Sony has the intention to make FF highly affordable, I’m sure they would have considered the ‘general user”s willingness to spend, and what they want. Rather than assumed ‘fine-tuning’ of currently available lenses in the lineup (this is the feeling i get from the list, and again, no offenses
). we as FF users should encourage Sony to expand their lineup and fill up all the voids present in it’s lineup. And by taking what i meant in consideration, you can already scrap off 40% of the options in the wishlist!
P.S. Asking for a e.g. 70-200 Zeiss is like Canon offering a MARK II lens! I don’t need another Canon in my life
Carl
7 months ago |It’s hard to tell whom Sony is targeting their full frame offerings at. Big name professionals? Ambitious advanced amateurs? The 135/1.8 and 85/2.8 hardly seem like they share a common design philosophy.
That said, I see no problem with Sony trying to appeal to as broad a church as possible with their offerings. It only becomes a problem when they try so hard to appeal to everyone that they end up appealing to no one.
monkeyfacemcbride
7 months ago |Hmmm….not too sure about this list or some peoples voting patterns to be honest. I suspect there’s a lot of fantasy votes by people who wouldn’t buy these lenses anyway. Look at the 70-200 2.8 CZ, that would be a £2500+ lens with minimal advantages over the existing 70-200 2.8G which is already excellent. Currently the lacking elements in the range are things like big G primes 300F4G 400F4.5G, both of which Sony have the optical designs for and they just need updating to SSM. Were I to spec the new lens range, additions would be as follows:
(Ok, the existing list of available Sony FF lenses is from a quick web-trawl so perhaps a couple I missed)
Existing Primes

200mm F2.8G (SSM)
300mm F4G (SSM)
400mm F5.6G (SSM)
400mm F4.5G (SSM)
500mm F4G (SSM)(coming anyway)
Existing Zooms
Sony CZ 16-35mm F/2.8
Sony CZ 24-70mm F/2.8
Sony 24-105mm F/3.5-4.5
Sony 28-75mm F/2.8 SAM
Sony 70-200mm F/2.8 G
Sony 70-300mm F/4.5-5.6 G SSM
Sony 75-300mm F/4.5-5.6 (SAM)
Sony 70-400mm F/4-5.6 G SSM
My Additional Zooms
12-24mm F3.5 (SSM)
24-70mm F4 (SSM) G
24-105mm F3.5-4.5 SAM (optically improve on current design )
100-300mm F4 (SSM)
70-400mm F4/4.5 G (SSM)
This gives good coverage in FF at multiple price brackets from 12 to 400mm and selective coverage outside that for the minority who want it.

7 months ago |Firstly Andrea tanks for all your hard work and creating such an up to date and infomration website for alpha-mites.
I think this is a great survey and it’s really interesting to get other readers views.
For me this big shift that Sony needs to make is to actually start developing a comprehensive set of lenses. The NEX system has a golden opportunity for this, but right now it just seems to be about the sensors.
I recognise that Sony is a technology company but for me photography is more about the glass (i.e. lenses) than sensors. If Sony truly want to become number 1 they have to change their strategy. At the moment, it seems their strategy is to let third parities build their lense portfolio. I can’t see how this will work in the long run particularly for Full Frame lenses.

7 months ago |You are correct… and (IMHO) Sony needs to decide which to choose, producing high end glass with $$$ price to limited people who already use the Alpha system (it’s difficult or almost impossible to lure those Canikon pro/ serious hobbyist who already invested a lot in those system) or (re)produce less expensive f/4 lenses (with better motor SSM/SAM whatever) to lure those new hobbyist around the world as well as NEX lenses to use Alpha system.
Sensor-wise Alpha is great, ask Nikon. One other thing is, maybe Sony needs to hire engineers from Pentax, Nikon or Canon to improve its JPEG processing algorithm (since lots of people are complaining about noise in high ISO – I have no problem with it honestly, even at iso 6400 with my A55).

7 months ago |581 votes for a 50/1.0 Zeiss? Well that goes to show how difficult it can be to read these things. It’s a shame people hadnt put more thought into it, as Sony have said they do read forums and internet for feedback and thoughts.
My point is how many of us could really afford a 50/1.0 Zeiss? It would logically be well over £1K GBP, perhaps over £2K

7 months ago |Yep, even if I can afford it I wont buy it. 2K GBP is approximately 4 years salary of the average hobbyist in my country

7 months ago |i see the hand shake replacement is 3.5-5.6 no thanks
tho after shooting some 4 grade football the other night that 50-150 2.8 sounds great tho maybe i woudl be even happier with 50-200 2.8-4
the 200 2.8 and 300 4 sound great with the 300 f4 being what i woudl use as a cheaper birding lens and with a 1.4 x converter woudl be great
