Popphoto voted the Sony A55 as camera of the year!
Popphoto choosed the new Sony A55 as camera of the year: “A really good measure of the strength of a technology company is how well it does things that can’t be done.Sony, confronted with a vexing glitch of DSLR video, dipped into a bag of old and new tricks to come up with a remarkably simple solution. Along the way, it invented essentially a new type of camera, one for which we don’t quite have a name yet. What we can call it is the Alpha 55, and the Camera of the Year for 2010.”
I couldn’t agree more

Mark puts Pana into the same class as Sony, but the lens alliance with Zeiss will keep Sony ahead. Canikon have nothing in their arsenals to compete right now, as they’re just rehashing the old technology.

2 years ago |Well said. I am still jealous about Nikon’s D3s/x though. I hope Sony grows a couple and makes a brick with a FF sensor and 7-10fps shutter. I think it is time for them to make a step into the pro pool dominated by CaNikon so far. Sony has the money and publicity on their side with new Nex and A55/33 and updates for 850/900. Using this momentum they can launch a new FF body with 500mm lens and make history. They could even buy Pentax for fun.
@Andrea: Please post some rumors on FF body, so we can talk about actual rumors, like you intended.

2 years ago |Andrea posted a while back that the next FF body will take another year or two, so it might be a while until reliable rumors comes around. Sad, but all we can do is wait and complain >.<
[I'm not ready to jump into the FF world yet though, so I'm happy enough A7x/A7xx is within the horizon

2 years ago |One thing Sony would worry about is return on investment in both R&D and everything it takes to come out with a new FF.
We know from past rumors that they will finish what they’ve stared (ie they have been in progress in designing something), but if you think as a business, you either need to release some early birds (that aren’t going to be the final master piece) to cover initial R&D costs, or get money from some other source (say, consumer lineup, or borrow money from BRAVIA TV etc).
Sony has always cited “customer demand” as their key factor on making decisions to develop or upgrade Alpha Cameras. We really need to demand more and convince Sony that people will switch if they come out with “pro pool” Flagship FF @ 9-15 fps.

2 years ago |I always thought that Nex and 55/33 was emphasized so much so they can cover the costs of R&D for FF. I don’t see how so many can demand an FF when A55/33 is so popular. It is hard to appreciate FF when you have such affordabele options with APS. As a film shooter APS is not an option for me while A900 is hardly different from my Maxxum 7. My hope is that FF sensors become cheaper and better, so that all can afford to switch.
As for Bravia, it will make a lot of cash for Sony starting Jan. They already have contracts with ESPN, movie, and cartoon channels lined up for the start of service in the next 2 years.
While early bird concept is correct most of the times, sony can just build their brick on A900 chassis and it vertical grip. Sensor will be different and shuuter could be replaced with carbon fiber from Maxxum9.
Oh wait, the video option. I don’t see a good video option without transparent mirror in place, and Sony made it clear some time ago in the press release. I hope they avoid the video on the FF, now that Nex is so affordable and compact.(I believe in a dedicated tool approach rather than Swiss army knife approach)

2 years ago |Let’s not forget how many sensors Sony sells in other brands. The popular Nikon D90 and D5000 both used a rejigged A700 chip. The cashflow for r&d can come from several sources, and not just from skimming off bravia profits.
