BTZ, your image link does not enlarge but leads to Amazon.

Here’s the image location if you’re too lazy to right click > properties.

2 years ago |I would get the 5N but the NEX series just doesn’t have affordable lenses like the alphas unless I’m missing something.
The a65 with the new 16-50 2.8 is something you can’t duplicate for the same kind of money in the NEX series.
a65 $899
16-50 2.8 $699
$1700
NEX 5N $599
there is no equivalent zoom lens in the E mount lineup is there to the 16-50 2.8?
Correct me please if I’m wrong as I’d rather buy the smaller form factor 5N
acolyte
2 years ago |Nah, that’s the sacrifice you have to make :\ Can’t have everything sadly, just like Macbook Air vs Alienware 17″+
ScottD
2 years ago |You could buy the LA-EA2 adapter and use the 16.50 2.8. Yeah it would be bulky and expensive, but the images that would produce would be very nice.
But your point is taken. They really need a similar lens for the NEX series!
acolyte
2 years ago |At the same time, you’d have to bump up the price by $400 :\
loverhd
2 years ago |Nex 5N has in fact 1.5 – 2.5 stops sensitivity advantage before A77/A65. So with 5N kit lens at F/3.5 you will still have the 0.5-1.5 stops advantage before A77/A65 at F/2.8
Ben
2 years ago |Also, according to Sony’s latest lens roadmap, they’ll be releasing a high end standard zoom G lens in 2012. That should satisfy what you’re looking for, though it’s yet to be seen how “affordable” that lens will be.

2 years ago |Is not many of the Sony lenses just re-branded Minolta
How many new designs since the purchase of Minolta by Sony?
BMan
2 years ago |New designs (as per the top photo):
16-80 ZA DT
16-105 DT
16-35 ZA
16-50 DT
18-55 kit
18-250 (Tamron actually)
24 ZA
24-70 ZA
28-75 (Tamron)
30 macro DT
35 DT
50 DT
55-200 (Tamron)
70-300 G
70-400 G
85 ZA
85/2.8
135 ZA
Enough?
SRL
2 years ago |Okay, Since I use full frame I don’t think of the DT’s and of course third pary vendors
Now, I have both the Minolta 85/f1.4 and the ZA 85/1.4 and I always thought it was a re-brand
So for FF sony released one in 2011, and the 85/f2.8 and the CZ24/2.0 last year and in 2009 a 28-75/f2.8 (Tamron) and few in 2008 when the a900 was anoounced.
Okay
BMan
2 years ago |Okay, but imho the strategy of Sony is ok!
They first made the designs that they lacked, and now they are focusing on re-designing the old minoltas. (50/1.2 patent gives a hint for sure).
And you may not use DT lenses, but 95%+ of Sony lenses sold are DTs.
acolyte
2 years ago |Maybe that’s why I didn’t wanna go full frame :p
Carl
2 years ago |Over time, the Minolta rebrands are getting replaced by Sony originals, so eventually we’ll get to a point where most or all of the available stuff is Sony designed.
I’m surprised you thought the ZA85 is a rebranded 85G. They have a very different drawing style to me eyes.

2 years ago |It’s odd that I can find the NEX-C3 with the 16mm pancake lens as a kit, but can’t seem to find the 5N with the same lens. It seems the 5N is only bundled with the 18-55 lens, which I’m not interested in.

The Zeiss is at #15 (Aug. 26) and the Panasonic 14-42 power/pancake zoom is a #10. Both lens are not technically available yet, so that many people pre-ordered them!?

2 years ago |OK SONY, here is the big deal…You see all those white big lenses? Make them F4 and I’ll be happy. And I want to see that SAL500F4 SSM released soon…ok? Just make sure it provides superb quality so that more people takes more seriously Sony Alpha line…Also, release again the old Minolta 200mm f/2.8 with SSM and make an alternate version in f/4. Theeeeeeeen, make a Weather Sealed version of selected lenses (zeiss, G and High performance Standard Sony lenses) and that’s it…Profit!
=D
acolyte
2 years ago |They need the $$$ first to offset the significant development cost of the new sensor and A77 itself :s
500/4 doesn’t exactly bring that much profit (note: not revenue) to Sony :s
Meh. Game theory.
You wish Sony just make all of them and then predict the number of people who’d buy them and make just enough for those people.
Raul S.
2 years ago |So they should stay the same? Canon is famous in the dSLR department because people sees professionals using it.
So since not so many Professionals aren’t using Sony equipment because either lack of lenses, lack of accesories, or lack of options within options then, there’s no promotion at all for Professionals… (in every soccer game you see a bunch of Canon users with big White lenses), people aren’t going to venture on Sony field. I’m a Sony user since many of the things at my house are Sony, and also because my parents worked with Sony Betacam, Digital Betacam and DVCam Professional Video cameras at a TV station. But that’s it. That’s because I know how well Sony cameras work.
They need to promote equipment capable of giving professional the curiosity to venture on another brand or to newcomers to see what Sony has to offer. But if they don’t push hard, then nothing is going to happen. Hopefully the A77 will change that…but lack of lenses and weather sealing options of current lenses, and/or slower lenses derived from f/2.8 selection is good enough to hold a Professional at the moment of consideration.
Gabriele
2 years ago |I got the 70-200 G, 135, 85, 24-70 and 16-24 Zeiss, unfortunately mounted all of them on the 55 body. But I can say that they are absolutely professional lenses to make photo and videos.
The A77 will replace the Fs-100 that I thought to purchase. With a good use of Nik plugins and Adobe Suite you will have the best arsenal for your pro job.

2 years ago |I was just looking at the good reviews on the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP Aspherical (IF) Zoom Lens and it can be had for roughly $400 on amazon. Does anyone have a reason why it may be better or worse than he Sony 16-50 2.8?
That’s a $300 savings if the lenses are comparable.
Thoughts?
Joey C
2 years ago |To answer my own question…. well at least from the Tamron side of things, the lens when focusing is INCREDIBLY NOISY when focusing, so to use this for video you would hear terrible grinding when going in and out of focus- here is an example I found on YouTube-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHxhJCY31FY
Can anyone confirm if the Sony 16-50 2.8 focus is silent or near silent compared to the Tamron 1750 2.8?
