Reminder: The Sony NEX roadmap. Four lenses to come in 2013.

Click on the image to see the full size version.
We got three new NEX lenses from Sony. And it is time to repost the NEX lens roadmap to see what’s coming in 2013. There will be four new lenses but as you know the roadmap doesn’t include the three amazing Zeiss lenses, the 12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8 and the 50mm f/2.8 macro. And we don’t have to forget that also Sigma, SLRmagic and probably other companies will release new lenses. 2013 may be the year where the NEX system becomes “mature”. Let’s see if Sony will also have the necessary resources to develop some Full Frame E-mount lenses for the Sony NEX-VG900 and any future FF NEX!

Jon R
7 months ago |That’s a bit narrow on the APS-C sensor. I was thinking more like an 16-50 f2.8 or a 16-50 f2.8-4.0 for a reduction in size.
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |24-70/2.8 on NEX APS-C? No chance. 24-70s tend to be full frame, and absolutely massive. They’re too big and heavy for NEX.
As Jon says, it’s more likely to be something like 16-50.
Richard
7 months ago |Although it’s 16-50/2.8, it will be too big for small body like NEX.
Sony should make use of their partnership with Olympus and use Olympus’ Telecentric technology which enables Sony to create superb fast lens in compact chassis.

7 months ago |Too big and havy. May be 16-35…
MisterMe
7 months ago |Canon’s EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 weighs 635g and is 4.4″ long. This is equivalent to 18-60mm on NEX.
A relatively big NEX lens, the 18-200mm, weighs 462g and is 3.8″ long
So that tells me a comparable quality (to the Canon) 18-60mm f/2.8 would be the largest, heaviest NEX lens.
I agree with the suggestions that if it is constant f/2.8, they will restrict the focal length range – e.g. 16-35mm or 16-50mm

7 months ago |If you want big huge lenses, just use adapt the A-mount SONY SAL 24-70z f2.8.
Lonnie Utah
7 months ago |^^^ This. The 24-70 f/2.8 CZ in it’s sweet spot is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used.

7 months ago |We also had the Sony 18-200 LE zoom lens. Maybe that’s the remaining “High-magnification Zoom” of 2012 ?
Jon R
7 months ago |Is the mid magnification zoom supposed to be something like a 18-105mm or something like that? I think the high magnification zoom was the new version of the 18-200mm.

7 months ago |Is really hope so! Please, pretty please with sugar on top. Have been wishing for a 16-105mm native NEX lens from some time now. For what I use the NEX for the 18-55 is jut not tele enough and the 18-200 is too much tele and too bulky. A slight less heavy 16-105mm would be awesome.

7 months ago |I am also waiting for a 16-70 or 16-105mm lens. Hoping for the last one

2 months ago |I shoot the NEX7 underwater in a Nauticam NA-NEX7 housing. Currently using the 18-55mm kit lens with +5 and +10 close-up diopters for macro and the 18mm for a sort of standard lens underwater (about a 35mm in SLR FF terms). This gives me some flexibility on a single dive. I use the 16mm with it’s 2 sister wide angle and fisheye adapters for anything wider. NIce compact HR system.
As an artist I mostly I shoot macro though for underwater abstractions. Unfortunately, the long end of the kit lens at 55mm is really not long enough for super-macro. Stacking the diopters helps, but working distance is pretty close. The upcoming Zeiss 50mm macro will help in sharpness and focus, but again lacks in length, actually being 5mm shorter than the kit lens.
I would absolutely LOVE a 16 to 105mm zoom to use with my HQ close-up diopters. This would give me a little wider approach then the 18mm and a very long macro when coupled with the diopters that are on a swing mount to easily put in place when I want macro. Keep it small and narrow so it’ll fit into the Nauticam ports. Plus, keep the minimum focus distance as close as possible. I’d rather have this lens underwater, and as a general purpose surface lens, rather than the expensive Zeiss 50mm macro soon to be released (still thankful Zeiss is making it though
.
Thank you Zeiss and Sony. We need a medium telephoto and a longer macro for underwater work.

7 months ago |Anyone know the roadmap for the alpha FF lenses? Just wondering if there are any confirmed new lenses for 2013 for the A99.
Rooru S.
7 months ago |Only confirmed lens for 2013 is the Sony Carl Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 SSM.. More will come for sure. (This year alone we had a SAL18135, SAL55300, and update of SAL300F28)
Tristan
7 months ago |Why are some lenses on that roadmap green and others grey? Especially the middle telephoto and the mid magnification zoom (both 2013)?
Jon R
7 months ago |I think the green ones were the new additions they put in the road map compared to the last time they released it.

the middle tele maybe 85mm f 2.8……
Olaf
7 months ago |Agree 100%
Considering the size of the 85 mm DT lens, I am sure Sorry can make it a little thinner and pancaky. Would be an awesome lens. Don’t get me wrong the DT 85mm is really good if you compare value for money, but I would love to see a bit better build quality on the E Mount. Little less plastic I hope.
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |Don’t forget the 85mm SAM is actually a full-frame lens (not DT), so maybe there is scope to make a smaller version for e-mount APS-C.
Olaf
7 months ago |really? always though it was a DT like the 50 F1,8. Really have to look at it when i get home
The Lotus Eater
7 months ago |Yep, 35mm/1.8 and 50/1.8 are DT, but 85mm is FF.
vinh
7 months ago |It’s is a fantastic FF lens. The quality is great. but it’s 2.8.
MisterMe
7 months ago |I really hope is is an 85mm f/1.8 or f/2. Full-frame 85mm f/1.8 lenses are in the 350g range, which is comparable to the NEX 55-210mm. Maybe a crop 85mm f/1.8 can be even lighter.
I don’t want a 85mm f/2.8 because that’s about equivalent to a 135mm f/4 on full-frame and that doesn’t provide enough subject isolation for me.
I think Sony should publish the full details of the roadmap. It won’t help the competition, and it may lead to fence-sitters (like me) to go ahead and buy a NEX camera. I can’t do it until I know the details on the high performance standard zoom and the mid-telephoto prime (would also help to know a timetable for the Sony and Zeiss lenses). Otherwise I’m forced to wait until the official announcement, and Sony has to wait for my money.

7 months ago |High magnification zoom is 18-200LE or 18-200 PZ?
spaceman
7 months ago |Good point. I would say it is 18-200LE, as 18-200PZ should be identical to the original one, at least IQ- and IS-wise. So the PZ is just bonus

curious also to see what is behid “snap(pancake)”
Both could be ideal complement for a NEX6+16-50mm
ligth package, good IQ and large range of possibilities (just add a ggod quality macro ring like raynox…)

7 months ago |I need a 16-70 f2.8 or 3.5, a good 70-210 f4 and a 85 f1.8..thanks by advance Sony

7 months ago |Zeiss 24mm f1.8″shortage of supply due to high demand”. That statement by Sony Japan was issued in March.I don’t want to rush quality over quantity but I’ve called around, in Sydney, and the soonest shipment is expected to arrive late November. Any rumours/speculations on this statement?

12mm f/2.8, 32mm f/1.8, 50mm f/2.8 macro
Dirk
7 months ago |As of Zeiss going to offer E-Mount with AF on their own, it seemingly makes no sense fro Sony to design Sony-Zeiss Lenses.
That will be a 12/2.8, a 32/1.8 and a Macro 50/2.8
The G Zoom Lens most likely will be a 16-50/2.8, as there is already the 16-50PZ which is small in size. Don’t offering larger and constant aperture compared to the PZ would give it low sales chances on the market.
And a zoomrange higher than 3x with large aperture is unrealistic. Only other option would be to design an E mount pendant to the APS-C Sony-Zeiss 16-80, but than something like 3.5-4.5.
Besides the Zeiss lenses I’d appreciate a portrait lens like mentioned above such as 85/1.8.

7 months ago |The glacial pace of NEX lens releases is killing me. The new Zeisses won’t even be out until next summer–almost a year after they were announced. And you can bet there will be a long waiting list even then. Why can’t Sony give more love to NEX lenses to go with their great NEX bodies? I just don’t get it.

7 months ago |It’s the market being skeptical, reviewers and trolls bashing down Sony, and brand competition. There’s just too many factors lowering demand and therefore may bite Sony if they do too much R&D & production.
The market nowadays are like horses with the eye covers.. Once they look at a certain direction, they don’t care whatever’s around them. Competition ain’t level ground anymore.
John Maverick
7 months ago |Use the Zeiss ZMs. They are smaller, lighter, and most importantly classic Zeiss in sharpness and contrast. Hyperfocal and peaking is superior for landscape and street compared with AF.
FMJ
7 months ago |16-80 Zeiss just like the A mount would be very welcome, of course smaller size please. oh if it could be F2.8-4 that would be a bonus.
The Snap, i would guess its going to be 20mm F2.8 like the Samsung.
hard to believe they would replace the 16mm that quick.
actually looking forward to see some new sigma F1.8 prime, because their price is just so attractive

7 months ago |Don’t forget the 2 new Carl Zeiss e mount lenses(12mm f/2.8 and 32mm f/1.8) that are going to come out probably somewhere in 2013. Look nice but again both around $1000.
I would like to see the SEL 35mm f/1.8 VS CZ e mount 32mm f/1.8 image samples.
1 question, does anyone know if the SEL 35mm f/1.8 will support NEX-7 24MP image size/quality -> FF lens or I’m guessing it is APS-C cropped.
last thing I want to know if everyone is having this problem or just my 18-55mm lens. When I do manual focus and get the image to be as sharp as possible, but after I take it and zoom in on the picture its not sharp as I saw it through the nex-7.

7 months ago |I was eagerly anticipating all these great new lenses for my nex7 right up to the vg900 announcement when all non FF nex lenses became obsolete. Now I’m glad I know before Sony took my $$$.
Lenses are for keeps, bodies come and go. With a strong chance of a very small FF body in the next couple years I’m sure not buying crop lenses.
Without knowing whether a-mount will autofocus fast once there is ff e-mount + adapter I also don’t want to invest in a-mount glass even for lenses that will be big no matter what (like fast tele zooms).
So just as it starts looking like Sony is getting nex lens story sorted out it’s back to square one with a probably years long wait ahead….
Sigh.
Dennis
7 months ago |by looking at the design of RX-1 there is no need to speculate about FF NEX. If it does the lens will be as big as any existing full frame lens.
John Maverick
7 months ago |Yeah, it’s why all those Zeiss ZM, Leica M, and Voigtlander RF lenses are so attractive. At some point, there’s a transition from acquiring lenses to match a body, to buying a body to match the lenses. It’s also nice that they are (mostly) optically superior.

2 weeks ago |I am new to Sony cameras having always been a pro Canon shooter. I am about to buy a NEX 7 and have just purhased a Zeiss 24mm lens. My question is about the long rumored update to the NEX 7. Is this something that is eminent to the point that my purchasing the current model now would make me quite unhappy that I didn’t wait a short time for the new release? Is it about to be announced or do you hear that it will be further delayed?
