Samyang announces the 24mm Tilt Shift Lens for Sony.

There is a new A-mount lens for us! Samyang just released the 24mm f/3.5 ED AS UMC Tilt Shift lens. This is the press text:
“Samyang Optics is about to release a new lens with the perspective control function — Samyang T-S 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC. The official product presentation will take place on September 18th 2012, during international photographic Photokina fairs held in Cologne.
New Samyang T-S 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC is a wide-angle, full-frame lens fitted with the perspective control and tilt-shift functions. Its unique optical and mechanical construction makes it an ideal tool for architecture and landscape photography. The product will be also extremely useful when convergence of the lines in the frame is required. Owing to the mechanism of optical axis tilt, focus depth operation brings utterly new quality and possibilities, enabling photographers to shape the image according to their individual needs, both on digital and nalog carriers.
Optical design of Samyang T-S 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC comprises of sixteen lenses arranged in eleven groups, including two aspherical lens and two lens made of ED glass with low dispersion factor. Thanks to this solution, the lens perfectly reproduces detailed elements and gives splendid image plasticity, also with the T-S function on. Each optical component of the product was covered with multi-layered, anti-reflective UMC coatings, which provide great light transmission factor, high contrasts and render only natural colors of the photographed scene. With sophisticated optics and developed T-S function, Samyang T-S 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC is currently the most advanced lens produced by Samyang Optics and may compete with similar lenses of other brands.
Tilt-Shift function
Tilt-Shift function in Samyang T-S 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC allows for smooth and individual adjustment of the focus plane angle by +/-8.5 and enables parallel shift of the optical axis by +/-12 millimeters. To make Tilt-Shift function even more seamless, both the lens mount as well as Tilt-Shift section may be rotated on the optical axis. The Tilt-Shift section may be rotated left by 90 degrees (with 30 degree adjustment), while mount of the lens may be rotated both in left and right direction by 90 degrees, also with 30 degree adjustment.
Samyang T-S 24mm 1:3.5 ED AS UMC will be available with mounts for Canon EF, Nikon F, Pentax K and Sony A. We welcome everyone to visit us at Photokina at our booth A025 in the hall 2.1.”

9 months ago |Cool, but it’s something Sony should have done LONG ago if they were serious about keeping and winning new customers to their DSLR line.
It’s about the system Sony, not just the tech!

9 months ago |Tilt-Shift is a niche lens, Sony have plenty of gaps to fill before one of these.
Mark
9 months ago |Really? I hear that often online, but what’s really missing from the Alpha system that *isn’t* a niche lens? You’ve got consumer and pro zooms that range from 17mm to 400mm, primes and fast primes that cover the major focal lengths, and even an STF lens for the bokeh fanatics. What else is out there that isn’t a niche?
Now, there’s plenty of holes in the NEX/e-mount system…

9 months ago |Cool. Ive wanted a tilt shift on A mount for ages!
The fact that its Samyang means I will actually be able to afford one
Mark
9 months ago |Don’t forget that you can also get a tilt-shift adapter from Mirex.de that will adapt either hassleblad or mamiya medium format lenses to Sony Alpha mount. Now, they don’t have anything this wide, so the Samyang announcement is still a plus.
I’ve been using adapted Mamiya lenses in 35, 55, 80, and 150 for the last year and it works quite well.
Greg
9 months ago |Yep, got all that too. Haven’t tried it yet with LV…which will make it much easier. And FF would help with wide-angle. It’s a pretty expensive $600 paperweight as it is now.
How do you use yours?
Mark
9 months ago |Greg,
I’m using it for landscape work on the a850. I agree that liveview would definitely help, but the lack of it isn’t a complete deal-breaker, given the wonderful viewfinder of the a850 and a900. I tilt for added depth-of-field and shift for stitching. If a subject isn’t moving, three vertical frames (shifting the lens horizontally) make for a wonderful final image that’s in a 4×5 aspect ratio, at a native 24×30″ print size.
Certainly live view would help with composing in low-light situations like twilight or night shooting, but for most other cases, you can manually stop down or open up the lens aperture without changing the f-stop (switch from M to A on the Mamiya lens).
Greg
9 months ago |Cool info, thanks. Are the results better than using a 16-17mm lens?
I figure for that shift use, I’m too lazy and just use my 11-18mm. I do interiors, and 35mm even shifted is too tele for APS-C.
I was more interested in tilt for portraits, but can’t get my kids to stand still long enough.

9 months ago |That link is for the 24mm Cine style de-clicked lens. It’s not for the tilt-shift lens. I just called the B&H. They are not taking pre-order for the tilt-shift lens yet.

9 months ago |Great idea, but 24mm is not wide enough for APS/C. Perfect for Full Frame. When they crank one out at 14mm or 16mm to fit my NEX-7, then I’ll consider buying one. Roberto
Steve
9 months ago |But is it any good?
I believe that most often you get what you pay for and I for one don’t have room in my bag for a lens that I know when I attach it to my camera that I’m compromising the image I’m trying to create with second rate optics.
Hellven
9 months ago |why do you say that samyang are second grade optics?
Jamie Lawrence
9 months ago |Have you tried the Samyang 85/1.4?! That is not a second-rate optic.
So I wouldn’t assume this lens will be second rate. I’ll wait to judge some real images instead of judging it based on brand alone
Chad
9 months ago |Based on my experience with the Samyang 35mm 1.4, I would call their optics anything but second rate. It is a spectacular performer – compares almost identically with my Canon 35mm 1.4L (considered by many to be the best fast 35mm you can get on an SLR).
If they can repeat that magic with this T/S it will be a real value compared to the pricy Canon version.
Rick
9 months ago |The 14, 35 and 85 are great lenses, the 24/1.4 is junk. Hopefully this doesn’t use the same optics.

9 months ago |Pre-ordered mine…I really find Samyang’s lenses very nice and worth every penny. (Love my A-mount 85mm f/1.4 and E-mount fisheye…)
Maciej M.
9 months ago |Great news I will buy it for sure as for the moment the tilt-shift solution that I use with my A900 is limited to 35mm on wide angle. I usee 35mm, 45mm, 55mm and 85mm lenses from Mamiya with the Mirex adapter

9 months ago |SIMPLY GREAT.. that such a small and “unknown” company takes all the market risks etc. for developing such a “bread and butter lens for ff photography”.. with the Sony A-System it is the same as with the Nex-try;-): to much bodies, but no innovative glass!!
GregJ
9 months ago |An “Unknown” company to most, maybe, but not small or new. They’ve been making lenses for a long time for a few better known, mass marketed brands. Yes, they do make some pretty cheap entry level lenses under a few different names, but… They also make a few select prime lenses that are anything but “cheap” or “entry level”. Namely, the 35mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 8mm Fisheye, and now this new beauty… I would love to take one for a spin on my a900…

9 months ago |If it will be optically good, then its very nicely thought out lens. Actually much better than Nikon variant. Well, we will see..
