SLRmagic shows a 28mm f/2.8 prototype lens for NEX

Some of us are not completely happy with the Sony NEX roadmap because of the lack of compact primes. So we have to rely on this kind of products coming from third party lens makers. SLRmagic showed a new E.mount lens prototype which will be on market by June. You can see a size comparison with some of the current NEX lenses:

Don’t know the price and image quality it can deliver. I would not expect to much from it!
P.S.: Click here to see the current SLRmagic 35mm f/1.7 lens for NEX on eBay (You can get it here only).

2 years ago |i agree. totally agree! i think the whole sony lens lineup is a waste of space too. cant the lenses be made smaller? we finally have another pancakes! me want pancakes! where can we buy it?

2 years ago |Doesn’t sound (nor look) promising. A legacy lens with an adaptor is a much better option
tom
2 years ago |legacy lens 28mm with f2.8 is large and not compact. you need a thick adapter as well. mostly bought used and i bought a few that are damaged. i once did a meet up buy and the lens was said to be good but all molded inside. waste of time. i rather buy a new one knowing it works and will not have mold
spada
2 years ago |Agreed, it doesn’t look promising. I can go to the local camera store and buy a Rokkor 28/2.8 or other 28/2.8′s for like $15

2 years ago |Once one of those has been adapted, you’re looking at a lens that’s at least the size of the kit zoom. If you don’t mind then great! But if you’re looking for something low profile, an adapted SLR lens won’t do
Richard
2 years ago |Yes, SLR lenses make little sense in my opinion. Use rangefinder lenses.

2 years ago |The 35mm 1.7 was exciting at first with the effects you could get… but after a month or so, I was tired of it after I found a descent fast lens. I assume this would be the same…
WyldRage
2 years ago |That looks a lot like the Mitakon 28/2.8.

2 years ago |Auto focus? Image stabilization? If not, then this offers nothing in competition against stalwart lenses via adapters, other than being cheap but actually overpriced for the quality. (SLRMagic jacked up the price of their best-selling toy lens as soon as it got popular, but it’s really just a $50 or so lens.)

2 years ago |The Nokton 25 was $850 when launched but once it got popular it is now sold for $1500. why not cheaper?
Steve
2 years ago |It amazing that some many people expect that a NEX camera with a quality lens let’s say a 24-70 f2.8 be any smaller than the current offerings on any other camera platform.
The size can and will be somewhat smaller and lighter but don’t expect it to be much cheaper.
Jd
2 years ago |Should have a 24-70mm f2 lens like the 30mm macro lens but with IS as a kit lens at the current price offering. the rumored nex lenses all look dumb. at least this pancake looks better than the 30 F3.5

2 years ago |Why not take a look at some Voigtlander m-mount lenses? They are small, price is alright and the IQ is excellent. So, they are manual? If you try it, you will love it.
Jd
2 years ago |i took a look at one before. the 12mm and the quality is terrible. i refunded it. arms and legs look terrible on it and not good to take pics of people
ItsaChris
2 years ago |At least they are making a normal lens for the NEX. Unlike sony… The small lens hood is even a nice addition.
But a nice voigtlander m-mount is truly the way to go. although this does keep with the styling of the 16mm and looks like it might even take the same filters.

2 years ago |I’d be more interested in this lens if it’s effective focal length was 28mm (i.e. if it were physically an 18 or 19mm lens). I want a good compact 28mm FOV option for the NEX.

2 years ago |This is obviously the same Chinese E28/2.8 that you posted a while ago (they even look identical).

2 years ago |This lens is already sold the first batch in China (not in the name of SLRmagic) for about 500 RMB (less than $80 USD),the quality is justify for the optical quality w/o auto focus. The only problem is mentioned above as the size is too big (always!). Of course, it is unbeatable when you may find a more costly but more beautiful Voitglander M mount lens for $6XX w/o adapter.
TC
2 years ago |how did you manage to buy the first batch? So did you like the lens?
mochapaulo
2 years ago |Well, I missed it. There are less than 100 pcs sold (60 pcs??) in the first batch. The manufacturer just posted it in a photo forum (xitek)in China and then accepted the online payment. I was too late to know. The next batch is coming but he may do some improvement according to certain users’ experience. So, it is still uncertain for the date. From the samples in the forum, I would say that it is not a must have lens but it is worthwhile to have for leisure snap shot.

2 years ago |Jd take a look @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/nakagane/tags/12mm/page11/
You can try 21mm f4 (sharp) or 28mm f2 or my favorite 40mm f1.4 which shines on Nex5 in IQ and in size.
All taken with CV 12mm lens… yes, it’s wiiiide lens so it’s hard to get it right but the pictures here look pretty good to me. I don’t think there is any wide angle lens that will make look good…it’s a wide angle nature.
TC
2 years ago |yes it is good for subjects but if you take photos of people in group photo they all look liek stretched in straight lines. it is terrible for people photos.

2 years ago |28/28 manual seems not attractive. it is not wide for 1.5x crop factor, the size is not really small for this. Leitz 35/35 comparatively smaller. even Summicron-c 40mm F2.0 looks small too. If you need wide angle, Voigtlander 15mm or 12 mm are better choice. 28 is not wide anyway. and I don’t trust what they labeled it as F2.8 too. but price will make more sense if it is in US$ 50-60 as a entry level for manual lens.
bob
2 years ago |why does everyone see a 28mm lens for x1.5 as a not wide enough 28mm? it should be seen as a very compact pancake 40mm short portrait lens! everyone using compact digital cameras talk about the multiplied crop factor instead of the lens before crop factor.
the lens looks pretty cool and probably has the latest digital coating. i have a leica summilux asph but it constantly flares with halo on my NEX and M9 because it does not have the proper coating for digital. on the M6 it is great. I would stay away from legacy lens even if its a leica if you will use it on digital. get a new lens for your new camera. but when can i buy this lens? are any of the 60 on amazon or ebay?
mochapaulo
2 years ago |You should wait. But from the tradition of SLR magic, this lens should be double of your expected price.
TC
2 years ago |Haha, yes as always and thanks for the tip! but is there ever a lens that is our expected price? I wish the coming zeiss 24/1.7 will cost around $200 but must probably it will be more than tripple my expected price. time will tell
